Well, I have to say that there are a lot of 'sporting hero' biographies out that I would not touch with a barge pole - Frank Lampard? No chance. Lawrence Dallaglio? too self-serving for words. Therefore, it was with slight trepidation that I picked this up only to have any lingering doubts blown away by the candid, honest and illuminating account within its pages.
Although there is plenty of information about JPs life and career, it is his analysis which makes it stand apart from the norm. Despite not having the status he deserves as a genuine champion with international honours and recognition, this book helps to put across the real Rugby League, and not that sneered at as a minority sport by the London-centric media.
Top stuff - surely the sport biography of the year.

STAND UP FOR THE MIGHTY JOEY JOHNS, 05 May 2008
Absolutely brilliant! The love of the greatest game in the world and the passion for rugby league flows through this book along with the sadness and heartbreak. I loved watching Johns play and cannot believe what he has been through in order to give us, the fans, such fantastic memories. I'e always admired him but after reading this I think the guy is on another level. He has made many mistakes, but owns up to them and this book is written with such intensity I could not bear to put it down. Definitely the best sports biography I have ever read, this is why I have written this review. If you buy one book this decade, make it this one!
Straight up the best rugby book on sale now., 25 Apr 2008
Wow, where to start? You think that in watching Joey Johns play rugby (footy) for all these years that you know the bloke. You get the feeling he is a happy go lucky chap with his life bouncing along without a care in the world, until you read his book. Its narrative is superb, fast flowing and most of all emotional. It will leave you open mouthed as you read Andrews story of perhaps the greatest rugby player of all time. And the heartache that accompanied it every step of the way. Awesome.
Well worth the money, 28 Feb 2008
A must read for all rugby league fans and sports fans alike. He has lead an extraordinary life, and this book allows you to learn so much about him, and what life is like for a world class sportsman.

Great book!!, 25 Jul 2008
There was a lot I didn't know about Stevo. I just thought he was an opinionated pundit on Sky with a daft turn of phrase. He's actually a really interesting guy and a bit of an entrepreneur. The following facts about Stevo were all a surprise to me: he was born in Dewsbury; he fell foul of the rugby league powers-that-be; he dabbled in journalism; and that he set up the rugby league museum at the George Hotel in Huddersfield. This man has hidden depths. After reading his book, I have new respect for him and I think he's a great champion for rugby league. This book is great if you want to find out about the 1972 Rugby League World Cup winning team. Shockingly the media at home ignored their victory until forced to acknowledge it some 30 years later. Stevo's descriptions of the world cup games paint a vivid picture of top class rugby league at the time.
In short, Stevo's book is a must for any rugby league fan. It provides an enthralling insight into the world of rugby league past and present.
Fantastic Book - Recommended Buy, 21 Jul 2008
This book is a fantastic read! It describes Stevo's humble beginnings in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and follows his rugby career right the way through to his move to Australia. It then outlines the start of Stevo's media career and follows this through to the present day. The narrative style lends itself perfectly to on-the-pitch descriptions of Stevo's memorable games and goes into just enough details about Stevo's off-the-pitch private life so that it does not detract from the best rugby story I've read. Stevo portrays himself as a decent (if opinionated), self-depreciating guy whose overriding love of rugby league shines through. Any rugby league fan (whatever club they support) would find this book completely engrossing - I recommend it!
Stevo pulls no punches, 16 Feb 2008
I received this book as a Christmas present with mixed feelings: Mike Stephenson is the self-opinionated summariser cum pundit on Sky Sports' otherwise excellent coverage of rugby league. To his credt, however, "Stevo" openly acknowledges that this is how the wider world views him and in this autobiography he takes the reader through his life with surprisingly good narrative style.
The most interesting part of the book is that dealing with "Stevo's" tough upbringing in a working class family living in post-war Dewsbury, Yorks. His graphic description of the poverty in which he and his family lived vividly conveys to the reader the daily struggle to make ends meet.
For somebody like me who has a limited knowledge of the history of the game it was a shock to learn that, shortly after contributing to Great Britain's victory in the World Cup, "Stevo" was forced into international retirement by small-minded, parochial bureaucrats following his decision to ply his trade in the Australian rugby league competition. It's hard to imagine such an attitude prevailing in this modern era of international transfers and the advent of the global game.
Overall, I'd say that the book is of interest to fans of rugby league and provides the reader into an insight on the way in which the sport has developed over the last 30 years through the eyes of one of its most prominent exponents.

Match of my life, 28 Jun 2008
Bought this book for my husband who is really into Rugby, he has praised this book no end. He has reccommended it to most of his friends and our copy is now getting quite tatty as it has been read and re read and passed between family members numerous times.
Fantastic, 16 Nov 2005
This is a brilliant book for all rugby fans it delves into the world of Rugby League as well as the personal life of a truely inspirational man. A definate must have!
Inspiring in Parts, 23 Jul 2007
He's dedicated to his sport, hates publicity and is very down to earth. Compared to other autobiographies, this book is not as interesting. But, then again, he's still very young and hopefully there will be a few more chapters about his future success.
If you are really into Rugby, I suppose you will love this book, but if Rugby is just a mild interest, it will not be as good as read as I hoped it would be. Saying that, it will demonstrat the dedication and focus you need to reach the top. So, for aspiring Rugby players, buy it!
An Excellent Book, 29 Oct 2006
I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband who is into his rugby and also because my kids are too! Although I'm not as mad on rugby as them, I thought i'd have a quick read as Johnnys quite a hunk and there are some great pictures of him in this book. However, I started reading bits of it and found it so fascinating that I couldn't put it down! It's a great insight into Johnny's mind and an inspiration for any young would-be rugby players. I'm really glad I bought it for him and would wholeheartedly recommend this to all Johnny fans.
AWESOME!!!, 10 Apr 2006
This is the best autobiography i have read. It is really interesting and you find out loads more about jonny. Well worth buying if you are intrested in the man or rugby in general.
A book by a WINNER! Amazing guy. GREAT GUY & GREAT BOOK, 08 Feb 2006
This book is outstanding! I didn't just enjoy this book...I was inspired and motivated by it! I didn't just read the words, I absorbed them and learnt from them. This is an attractive glossy book and is not 'war and peace' in length. But the words and information it does contain on; training, hard work, set backs, nutrition and most importantly his mind set, mind techniques and preparation strategy are excellent. It's longer than a magazine article and shorter than a novel. (thankfully!). But this book will change your life! IF you let it. If you follow this book and adopt Jonny's dedication you WILL do very well in any sport. EVERYONE must read this book. Only those that do “whatever it takes” like Jonny will excel at their sport, thos that bother to focus like Jonny. A GREAT book. I tell clients to read it and I highly recommended it in my own book. The book is worth the price just for the quotes from Jonny and discovering his superb favourite quotes. (If you read this book and think there is ‘nothing in it’ you have missed something. Big time. Take it from me, Jonny has written a “how to be successful guide”. If you write down your goals at 10 years old like Jonny, copy your heroes, work very hard EVERY session, party little, never give up, learn from the best, get the best advice in every area (and follow it) and train from morning till night, almost everyday! Including Christmas day……you WON”T fail to achieve something great!) Buy it. Read it. Follow it. Enjoy it! Don’t miss it! One of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read. Overall it’s actually better than ‘Every second counts’ by Lance Armstrong. Which is a very good book. Phil McNally, Author of 'Winning Mentality- 7 Mind Techniques used by Winners'

Funny, just like he is in real life, 24 Jun 2008

I can only describe this book as to be one of the most honest and truthful autobiographies I have read in a long time. Funny in places, Barrie's book is well written and very difficult to put down once you have started it. A great read for Leeds Rhinos fan, and for for all other Rugby League fans.

I've owned a 1st edition copy of The Golden Boy's book for many years and it has a prominent place in my collection. Lewis very kindly signed it for me (via Derek Hallas - yet another great Leeds Loiner) a few months ago. His account of the move from Union to League is a fascinating incite into how sports (RL) team management worked in the fifties. But for me the best section of the book is the full details of the 1957 RL Cup campaign with the pinnicle being the 9-7 win in the Final against Barrow. I was an 11 year old schoolboy in those days and I was taken to London for the first time by my school (Quarry Mount) by train for the Final on the 11th of May 1957. Those 1957 season memories of Lewis's record 496 points scoring season will live with me FOREVER !!

Excellent history of league., 07 Mar 2008
Tony Collins traces the whole history of our game from its origins in the late 1800's through to Super League. His explanations are always plain, accessible and fair. While political shenanigans can often be difficult to follow, this book does an excellent job of unfolding them and showing what was really at stake. He is clear on the class wars that were under the surface of the troubled relationship with the other code.
Whatever period of the game's history may interest you, you'll find something to increase your understanding and make you think.
It's a model of popular social history.

Match of my life, 28 Jun 2008

Jhonny wilkinson is a true ledgend in the world of rugby!!!
The best ever Loiner .... in my opinion !, 16 Nov 2008
The definitive account of the origins of the great rugby split, 26 Nov 2007
I've read many books covering the origins of Rugby League and this is by far the most definitive account of the great split and subsequent creation of a separate code of rugby football altogether. It isn't bias in any way nor does it regurgitate tired old prejudices. It seeks to look at the social and economic circumstances at the time and explores the moral forces at work in Victorian society that led to the creation of the Northern Union. It also gives a fascinating insight into the growth of other sports and explains why towns like Burnley played Association Football and Wigan adopted Rugby League. It is written more like a text book rather than a 'story' and is therefore ideally suited to any serious sports historian, whatever their code.
