Helpful but a spellchecker and a proof reader wouldn't hace hurt, 25 Nov 2008
It helped me complete the game the first time round but I must say that there were times when the directions were wrong (left turned out to be right or vise versa), spelling mistakes such as potion instead of poison and overall, I just wasn't too impressed. Buy it if it's your first time playing the game but if not, I'd tell you to download a free guide from one of the many gamers who have already completed the game.
If I had to describe what I thought of it I'd say it felt like some guy had just written down all he could remember and then sent it off to be printed. No spellchecks, no proof read and it was missing little bits and pieces such as items that were never mentioned or describing items that couldn't be found. A fantastic game,a fair guide, 07 Nov 2008
I can say without any fear that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever. But this is a review of the official guide and as such I can recommend this guide but must add that it doesn't show you everything there is to see.
I completed the game and then bought the guide and was amazed at how much I had missed.I followed this guide and doubled my playing time and actually managed to find Vincent and Yuffie and use them as playable character's which I failed to do first time around.I also managed to obtain the Knights Of The Round summon which was hard work but very worthwhile.
This is a very good guide and while it doesn't quite provide all of the answers,it does expand on this fantastic game quite a lot. Good but not perfect, 13 Mar 2007
I've completed FFVII many, many times using this guide and others on the net. It is generally a good guide but there are a few secrets that it doesn't mention at all. There are a number of monsters missing from its bestiary and a materia that isn't listed. Other than that it is ideal for all causal FFVII gamers but the hardcore would be better using online guides written by FFVII geeks like me! It's not the best guide - yet it's the official guide!!!, 21 Feb 2006
The guide shows every section of the main game, where to get the items and what's available in the shops - dead helpful and detailed, so you don't miss an item. There's a good bestiary, which is handy if you want a particular item fom Morphing a monster. The bad points come to light if you're looking to do all the extra quests. For a start it doesn't tell you exactly when things are available... It doesn't go into detail in how to defeat the Emerald and Ruby Weapons. Nor does it tell you when the its best time to visit the crashed Shinra Submarine (you can miss out on a not-too-vital fight against Rude and Reno otherwise!) If you want to get all the Enemy Skills then you need to keep checking the bestiary - rather than telling you when the skills are first or easily available! Not helpful if you've missed your only chance to collect a skill! It's not very detailed with betting on the Chocobo Racing - where you could get the Sneak Attack, Gil Plus, EXP Plus materia! If you want to complete this game to it's fullest, then you need to know exactly when side quests are available, when to gain Enemy Skills, when to do the chocobo racing and gain a Gold Chocobo - otherwise you could miss out on many smaller elements to the game. The EXP Materia, for example, is a time saver when it comes to trying to Master all your Summon Materia, so you can gain the Master Summon Materia... and so forth! It's quite annoying that the official guide isn't that deep. I do feel rather let down that the games creators have created something so shoddy. Thankfully the game is ten years old and this guide has been banging about the same time - the wonders of the internet and all FFVII fans have taken their time to create indepth guides freely available to download! For the sake of a tenner, you might as well buy this, and then print out the other information from the internet. Then you can truly say you've completed the game for 100%!!
Really Helpful and Very Indepth Information, 24 Jan 2006
I have completed this game a few times before, so i thought I would get this guide and see what sorts of things I had missed in the game. You wouldn't believe the ammount of hidden items, secret areas and such. This book in no way spoils the game, it adds to the pleasure of playing. I would recommend anyone who has played this game before to buy this book.

Good, but not the best., 23 Sep 2008
In terms of a strategy guide for Final Fantasy VIII, it's unbeatable.
But in terms of a Piggyback brand guide, it's not the best.
Quite a lot less pages compared to guides for games such as FFX and FFX-2
Perhaps due to fewer content but meh...
It could be a little more reader friendly also, finding the information you need can be rather annoying at times, for these reasons I give it 3 stars. For being the best guide you can currently get for FFVIII I give it another star.
4/5*
Good product really, worth buying.
An excellent book to accompany the game, 02 Sep 2003
This book is fantastic its full colour pages are packed with information, screenshots and maps. I’d been playing the game for absolutely ages and just couldn’t figure out what to do in Ultimecia’s castle so I eventually resorted to buying this guide and I’m glad I did. Everything is clearly described and it’s not just a walkthrough there are lists of monsters, cards, weapons and even details on characters and guardian forces. The only problem with it is that once I finished my game I wanted to start again and work my way through all the secrets described in the book A very worthy purchase to accompany the game.
Final Fantasy VIII Official Strategy Guide, 05 Oct 2002
This is a very good book, containing a lot of secrets. The only thing I don't like is all the secrets and cards are at the back of the book, although they are referenced in the text, you have to flick back and forth. Also some people might miss the references and miss out on the secret, but if the article was written on the same page it would be easier to find. Overall, a very worthwhile purchase!
ACE!!!, 07 Sep 2002
This is the best book I have ever read in my life!!! If you play/played FF8, you will be gripped from start to finish! Everything you need to know is in it! GF's, item lists, detailed maps, a massive walkthrough, and loads more! It is sooooooooooo worth the money! Buy it!!
Highly recommended, 06 Apr 2002
This is a very detailed strategy guide, including everything I expected from it and more. I especially like the characters section where you can see some stunning original artworks of the characters. The guide is packed full of maps which I found extremely useful on several occasions. The secrets section is also very imformative. Also, another good point about this book is that it doesn't give much away. By that, I mean that sequences such as the ending are left for the player to witness, instead of accidentally reading about it in the guide, thus ruining the game (at least it would for me). I would highly recommend this item.

An introduction to the secrets of Soulbringer, 15 Jan 2001
This book is a great way to beat those problems you almost certainly experience in the fantastic RPG game Soulbringer. How to figure out Jaards well, how to find the missing rune or book and much much more, if you have truble with the game, this guide is worth the price. Since there are very few places online where you can find any help on this game, this guide is a MUST HAVE for any who like to experience all the little secrets of a great game.

The only thing I don't like is all the secrets and cards are at the back of the book, although they are referenced in the text, you have to flick back and forth. Also some people might miss the references and miss out on the secret, but if the article was written on the same page it would be easier to find. Overall, a very worthwhile purchase!

Keep this handy, you'll need it., 10 Jan 2004
When i first began my Daoc experience a year or so ago, the original strategy guide was my bible. This contained everything that got me through those initial hours of playing, hooking me into the game. To this day i'm still reading over it checking various combat styles or spells my next character will receive in levels to come. I can safely say that this book is simply mandatory if you plan to tackle the newest expansion to the Dark Age Of Camelot experience with both little stress and efficiency. As i did not purchase the Shrouded Isles guide, it took me a great deal longer getting to grips with this smaller area than it did with the huge area known as Albion not so long ago... Back to the content of the guide. To be honest, it's goldust to the dedicated Daoc gamer. Everything in this book is essential for completing the 9 trials and artifact quests, in an easy to read and understand, clearly presented form. The Master Ability lists are dreaded by some, welcomed by others. Regardless of your character(s) profession, it's best you know to the best of your knowledge as much as you can about these. Prima have evidently anticipated this, therefore all the master levels and abilities have been listed with all their pre-requisites. Say your looking for a specific Ability, simply look up the name, and it'll have all the required information you need. For the dedicated collector, the all important item list is a must. This again contains a concise list of every named 'drop' available, both in key dungeons and by unique monsters etc. Simply look for the name of the itemy you desire, you'll find its location, or zone listen along with what (type of) monster drops it, and its rarity. The keen explorer never leaves his house in the foundations zone without a map. This guide ensure he'll be doing just that. It contains very basic and detailed maps of every new zone contained in Trials Of Atlantis. This will save you having to alt+tab out of the game every few minutes to check for various maps, and let you play in peace. You'll never get lost if you use these maps, correctly. Overall, i'd say that this guide is a must for anyone planning to tackle the Trials Of Atlantis without searching for that non-existent web page you're dying for, searching the lands for that one item you realise you actually don't need, or figuring out where the hell you are because you refuse to leave the game to look for a map.
