A lot of off topic content, 08 Jul 1999
Perhaps it should be re-named Hands on Visual Interdev 6 and get your hands on Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Edition. I was hoping for a book to introduce me to Visual Interdev 6, and how to connect to Access databases. I found a lot of the content was not on topic at all. How to design a web site, how to use Visual Source Safe, how to manage Corporate development teams etc. etc. This was not why I purchased the book. It would be better if the author had used that space to cover topics not even mentioned in the book at all, like searching for records in a database via a web form. The very first database chapter presumes the user has SQL Server 6.5, and clearly states you must have this to complete the chapter. You can imagine my disapointment. I don't own SQL Server 6.5 or Visual Source Safe, I am a single designer and don't really care about team development concepts and management. What I care about is developing in Visual Interdev 6. This book was clearly the wrong choice.
If You're Coming From FP98 To Interdev 6 You Need This Book!, 10 Mar 1999
Wanting a more robust database-driven website than Frontpage 98 could offer I purchased Interdev 6. I found the program awkward to learn due to the poor documentation provided by Microsoft. There was little to offer in the way of a basic understanding of the tools and their uses. Having a project-oriented book like "Hands On" allowed me to overcome my early frustrations with Interdev and actually produce some real eye-catching results within just a few hours. I'm already up to page 200 and find myself leaving home from work early to pick up where I left off! This is a great book for those brand-new to Interdev 6!
Not For Developers!, 26 Jan 1999
This book should be re-Titled: "How To Use Visual InterDev 6.0 Wizards". And that's it! If you are a developer, this book is absolutely not for you. I will have to return this book and buy another one.
Only a Hardcopy of the online docs!, 10 Oct 1998
This book is only a paper version of the online docs. One particular peeve I have with this book (and the online documentation) is the loose use of the phrase "in script". Too often the reader is left trying to contextually determine if the book is referring to server side VBScript, server side JScript, client side VBScript, or client side JScript.

The book is great for Setting up IIS 4.0, 23 Jul 1999
Some issues Today are made specifically for a subject. That is the case of this book. It is a book made for setting up and troubleshooting IIS 4.0. So far, it helped me with the problems I found while setting up IIS 4.0. I really vote 5 stars for the book. May be we are going to use it just a few time. However, if you need help a book like that really can save your lots of hours. Marcio Coelho Arthur Andersen Technology Solutions Sarasota - FL
Excellent guide to debugging, 16 May 1999
I was looking for one book that can solve the problems I had with IIS and ASP, and I am glad I found this. I am new to ASP but this book explains at my level. Great job!
Don't waste your $, 16 Apr 1999
This is just a handbook size abbreviated version of the documentation. This book at many times just gives you the number of the knowledge base article of where the information is at. The book is only 5"x 3"x 1/4" and has large print and a bunch of pictures, therefore it contains very little infromation.

Good Overpass of the subject but nothing to really sink into, 05 Mar 1999
I read all the rave reviews about this book and I thought "I have to buy it". I've got VI6 and I wanted to learn about database integration and all the cool new features. This book is very readable and it has got a few good examples but there's nothing to reallly sink your teeth into. Go for one that gives you more exercises is my advice.
Buy!!!!!!, 02 Apr 1998
Your Search is over. If you want to learn Visual Interdev this is the book to purchase. Well written, easy to understand, and a joy to read. Thanks Paul!!!

It's not good for nothing, it's good for something..., 14 Jan 1999
This book is like a User's guide that I'd expect to ship with VID, if MS still did that sort of thing. It's goal is admirable, but its content doesn't let it reach the goal. I would guess that most developers like me want to buy a book that's going to cut down the learning curve (without having to pay $1K for a class). But if you want to get anything out of the book, you have to do the work. The examples seem to skip steps and don't take into consideration what is and isn't installed on the client and/or server. I think it's a fair attempt at tackling a (somewhat) new product. For real newbies, this one may be it. If you've got experience with most MS dev. tools, you may want to check out some other books.
Offers nothing more than included documentation, 24 Dec 1998
At US$40.00, a near-useless book. Perfunctory introductions to InterDev, without enough detail in any examples to really get you going. Many screenshots don't match up to the descriptions (obvious proofing errors abound). And gratuitous use of the sort of "let's just name the interface elements" approach to instruction books. (Example: definition of "Parameters Tab": "On the Parameters tab, you can set the parameters to be passed to the database object."). People use InterDev to develop database-oriented sites. As another reviewer wrote, there is no more than 15% of the book devoted this. And stay away from the awful chapters on CSS, HTML, and Web design.
Good for starting with the VID environment & controls, 20 Dec 1998
Continuing past p. 255 -- chapters 14 and 15 were (in my view) *good* for database environment basics, with chpt. 17 touching on ADO/RDS and chpt. 22 touching on SQL. I have yet to see what the MCSD VID certification exam will contain, but I think this book offers enough coverage for a starting point -- but then, I also bought a book on Professional ASP Design to continue my learning...
No in-depth information on Visual Interdev 6.0, 16 Dec 1998
This book doesn't really help you to learn the basics of Visual Interdev 6.0. It seems that the book was written on the beta version of Interdev, and therefore includes several errors. But this isn't all! There are several references to the accompanying CD, but there is no CD included! So, you will have to type over the code listings yourself, but even then, it won't work! If you really need information on how to work with Interdev itself, if you need detailed information on ASP, and accurate "How to do this..." information, don't even think of buying this one!
Errors, 09 Dec 1998
There are some errors in this book. It is frustrating to try and follow the examples step-by-step because some of the screens and functions in the book do not match up with the actual InterDev 6 screens and functions. Perhaps the examples were based on a beta version of InterDev 6?
