Got to love Nigella!, 03 Jan 2009
I love the way Nigella describes food and gives the amateur cook (that would be me, then) an idea of what the finished result of a recipe should taste, feel and look like. This beautiful book is full of fab recipes that I am looking forward to attempting, and the photography is brilliant. I'm particularly looking forward to trying out the Tiramisu layer cake - the perfect opportunity to try out my new springform baking tins! This book IS Christmas! I was given it as a Christmas present and probably my favourite one.
christmas countdown, 02 Jan 2009
I am a huge fan of Nigella and treated myself to this book as an early christmas present. This year it was my turn to cook for the in-laws and family and I wanted everything to be perfect hence my purchase.
I began my food shopping a month in advance so I knew I had all the correct ingredients for Nigellas super moist turkey(trust me it really worked), sprouts with pancetta, parsnips with maple syrup, perfect roast potatoes, bread sauce & chocolate chestnut pots for dessert(we all hate christmas pudding).
I followed her christmas eve & christmas day plan down to the dot, even stopping for a glass of champagne & put my feet up when she says too before the rush starts & I have to say everything was PERFECT, Personnally the sprouts were my favourtite, my nephews adored the parsnips, my parents loved the bread sauce, my partner loves semolina so the roast potates were fabulous & crunchy, and as for the in-laws there were no complaints just praise...for me & the amazing turkey.
Oh and the chestnut chocolate pots were divine(i cheated and put marshmellows on the top so they were a bit gooey).
A fantastic book with some amazing recipes.

Beautiful recipes (I haven't found one yet that diesn't work), glorious presentation. And as long as you are organised there are no ingredients which can't be sourced-- even the obscure ones are available online for easy delivery if you take the time to look at the stockists list.
Too many recycled recipes, 22 Dec 2008
I've got quite a few of the Nigella books and borrowed this book in the run up to Christmas to see if it's worth buying. For me, it's definitely not. Most of the recipes have appeared in earlier Nigella books, and it's not worth shelling out for something I've already got.
The book is beautifully presented and I'm sure it would be useful if you needed one cookbook for Christmas. However, I'd think twice about buying this and get a copy of Feast instead, as it's much better value. Most of the recipes here appear in Feast, and Feast also includes chapters on Easter, weddings and various other festive occasions. Feast is a lot more useful and costs about the same.
Fantastic, 20 Dec 2008
This book is fab, the recipes are easy to follow and as something for everyone from easy snacks to the full christmas lunch....o and a cocktail or two. Buy this and you will not be disapointed.

Some good recipes that are easy to do at home, 21 Dec 2008
I bought this based on the reviews and I didn't want to buy something that required me to get dozens of weird and wonderful ingredients to make. Some of the recipes were great, i could make them straight away, but 25% of them required a trip to the supermarket and specialist stores to stock up, so not quite as an "express" as I had hoped.
Interesting food for all occasions, 14 Dec 2008
I like that the food Nigella presents is not limited to a type of meals. Too often "Express" cooking book focus on lunch or dinner. Her book give us options for all occasions, from breakfast to entertaining. It is great and it tastes great!
Quite amazing, 13 Dec 2008
I have been delighted with this book. There are a huge number of well thought out recipes inside. Without compromising on the quality of the food (it really is excellent) - Nigella has produced recipes that can in some cases be knocked up within fifteen minutes.
You can expect, for the most part, food that is several cuts above a weekday meal. However, there are also many wonderful starters, mains and desserts which would delight dinner-party guests. I cannot recommend this highly enough, why slave for hours aspiring to perfection when you can achieve the same result in thirty minutes?
A great book, 03 Dec 2008
I received it yesterday and I'm impressed! There are a lot of very simple, clearly and traceable recipes with beautiful pictures in it. I love all of them. I'm looking forward to cook something from it.
Fantastic Cooking, 01 Dec 2008
This is my first Nigella book and certainly won't be my last. My idea of a ready meal is something I've cooked and put in the freezer or something that is quick and simple. Try the Lamb Tagine - my lamb hating daughter loves this and it's so simple. The rocky mountain bars are fab and so easy. I am definitely a Nigella fan - keep up the good work.

Product Description
This is a book about baking, but not a Baking Book. The trouble with much modern cooking is not that the food it produces is not good, but that the mood it induces in the cook is one of skin-of-the-teeth efficiency, all briskness and little pleasure. SomeThose who love comfort food have cause to be grateful for Nigella Lawson's book How to Be a Domestic Goddess. Cause, too, perhaps, to wonder that she isn't the size of a house, since baked comfort foods typically encompass large quantities of butter, cream, eggs, sugar, chocolate, nuts, cream cheese and all the other foodstuffs to which with dreary inevitability attaches the deadly word "sinful". But in Nigella Lawson's hands these dangerous, even feared, substances are transmuted alchemically into the healing balms of the goddess, who presides (perhaps a little ironically) over a harmonious kitchen realm. The recipes are suitably divine, covering cakes, biscuits, pies, puddings, breads, with special sections on cooking for (and by) children and Christmas. Most are sweet, though there is a choice selection of savoury pies and puddings--Pizza Rustica, Steak and Kidney Pudding, Cornish Pasties. The sweet things range from the airy elegance of Pistachio Macaroons, through the luscious spiciness of Norwegian Cinnamon Buns, to the trailer-trashiness of Coca-Cola Cake. Nigella Lawson's poise never falters, whether she is discussing serving mulled wine with mince pies ("Don't fight it") or a strange passion-fruit liqueur required for one of her trifles ("the most divinely camp liqueur you could ever come across"). She plays a kind of game with her readers, insisting constantly on her greed, but really invoking our own. What a fascinating book: hints of obsessiveness revealed behind the beautifully projected personality of a laid-back voluptuary.--Robin Davidson

Mixed results, 19 Dec 2008
I've only recently started using this book but am an avid baker. The production is wonderful and I enjoy Nigella's attitude to food. Some recipes are excellent but others are quite disappointing. I felt some basic information was left out i.e. size of moulds, adjustment for fan ovens etc. This may well have impacted on the outcome of some recipes. However, once you hit on a good recipe, it's a keeper! You'll make it again and again!
Great Christmas cake recipe - could easily double as pud!, 09 Dec 2008
I was drawn by the cake on the front of this book and used Nigella's recipe for latkes around Christmas a couple of years ago - they were lovely. This year I've used her Christmas cake recipe twice (second cake baked last week) and everyone who has eaten it has loved it! The first time it came out quite moist but I found that it came out really high when I left the fruit soak for about a week, topping up the sherry (Cork Cream) with a little splash of black (Seadog) rum and finished it with cognac (Hennessy) before mixing it. The cake could, I've been told, be served instead of pudding if you wanted to avoid steaming puddings. As with Delia Smith's book, my copy of this one has started to accumulate sticky finger marks on the pages from use - hope yours will too.
Perfect for any Domestic Goddess!, 05 Dec 2008
It's quite simple. I have bought this book for many friends now, It's a super addition to any recipe collection. Perfect!!
Comfort food at it's best, 30 Nov 2008
Just the most dreamy book, I just like to look through it sometimes as it cheers me up. The recipes are all yummy, easy to follow and love Nigellas approach. Would not be without this book, refer to time and again.
Baking Flavoured Genius!!!, 29 Sep 2008
I absolutely love this book.
Mouth-watering recipes with honest & humerous additions and explanations to encourage you through them. Although some of the recipes look & sound a little advanced you never know until you try, and as the author explains some of the most wonderful recipes are created by mistake.
Admittedly i've mostly attempted sweet treats but the Cornish Pasty recipe was divine, I substituted the mince for butternut squash and made a vegetarian version. Thats another bonus of this book, many recipes have variations at the end, meaning once you've got your confidence you can experiment safe in the knowlegde that it wont ruin it by changing bits.
My book is covered in splashes of this & that and chocolate thumbprints as the recipes have been used over and over.
Theres a store cupboard chocolate orange cake, which again sounds scary when you discover the main ingredient is a jar of marmalade...but as my dad always said "try it before you screw your face up in disgust".
My favourite has to be the moist chocolate loaf which requires stirring in 250ml of boiling water!!! It did look very very watery and like a disaster waiting to happen.....but my god it was gorgeous!!! Have faith and attempt it more than once and you'll find you're constantly baking these favourites for everyone and their mother!!!
I've never managed to make a decent cheesecake and this book has a genius recipe for mini BAKED cheesecakes which turn out perfect every time - there's even advice on how to get the damn things out of the tins (which was as Nigella warned trickier if you're trying to eat them before they're cooled).
I love the little hints & tips - e.g. the butter cut out biscuits recipe makes absolutely tons of yummy biscuits (not a problem in our house) but as suggested you can put half the dough in the freezer and make a second batch later, it even explains how long to defrost it for! Also if she says use baking paper, dont think you know better! If it defies "non stick" for Nigella you and your supermarket brand bakeware wont stand a chance. But if you like eating your food straight from the baking tray or scraping it off into a messy heap...be my guest.

I love reading this cookbook. I love how the book has different ideas for different feasts. I made the jewelled cupcakes for christmas. They were really marvellous and looked just like the picture. Everyone who came home during Christmas loved them... they looked fantastic and tasted even better..
Feast your eyes!!, 31 Jul 2008
This book is amazing!! Not only are the recipes extremely easy and straightforward (you would expect nothing less from Nigella), but the background to each 'Feast' is interesting and well written.
In agreement with another reviewer, the chocolate cake section is fantastic!!
Beautifully presented and well worth the money - Buy This Book Now!!!
Astoundingly tantalising and scrumptious!!, 11 May 2008
As a cookery book sceptic this book has transformed by attitude towards celebrity chefs. This book has a personal and `down to earth' nature which is really quite endearing. Engaging snapshots and quirky notes make this not only a collection of recipes but an equally enjoyable read. It has never stayed on the shelf long; I constantly find myself delving into its stunning pages which burst with inspiration and wisdom.
Selecting a favourite recipe would not do justice to the many other favourites I would have to leave out; you do really just have to buy it!
Some recipes admittedly take a lot of expensive ingredients but there is just no compromise for the quality flavours which these recipes produce. The use of ingredients however is not unnecessarily extravagant; I do not have a particularly well stocked kitchen and I find that I usually have most of the ingredients.
I would recommend this book; it is a beautiful collection of recipes which have been gathered with care and aptitude. It would make a lovely and appropriate present because of the way it focuses on various celebration foods. This book I'm sure will be a classic, and one which many family favourites will derive from....
'Feast' indeed a celebration of life., 10 May 2008
Life is messy - and to enjoy good food improves things immeasurably. `Feast' is indeed a celebration of life. It seems strange that at times Lawson has been accused of excess for the generosity of her portion sizes, preferences for quality and interesting variation - and indeed her very person. In a world where the gap between starvation and gluttony - usually cheap, synthetic foodstuff - becomes the norm `Feast' opens up a world in which food is homemade, heartfelt and real - a world in which (once we discard our hang-ups and neurosis) a natural balance breaks out - which turns out to be healthier in a much truer sense. As a food writer Nigella Lawson is generous. What could be more pleasurable?
`Feast' represents generosity and sharing, things we witness in the quality of ingredients, her quantities and serving sizes but none so much as in the books narrative. We are amply provided for with a `little something to read' between sessions in the kitchen. Hearty, eloquent, cheering - almost self effacing at times - but above all voluptuous (some may consider verbose but the rest of us find ourselves able to devour every word with alarming ease.)
The recipes contained in this book are adaptable and successful. This reader labours under the temporary encumbrance of a dreadful kitchen but even here Lawson's recipes prove triumphant!
No veg!, 08 May 2008
Good for cakes and deserts but on the main course it seems to lack something. Where are all the veg?

Product Description
Nigella Lawson has long been among the most realistic as well as the most readable of writers on food. Her description of a three-star dinner really is a good second best to actually eating it yourself. But equally she knows the inestimable value of a bacon sandwich on sliced white. This wonderful book combines both of these talents as she sets out on the ambitious task to impart no less than "the Pleasures and Principles of Good Food". The book is neatly divided into categories--cooking in advance, weekend lunch, low fat and so on--each with its own passionate and intelligent introductory essay. The recipes are straightforwardly presented and the occasional school-mistress tone--"you must keep your stock in the freezer", "I loathe the acrid dustiness of standard-issue sherry"--is always justified by its implication of an entirely proper seriousness and her endless common sense. But most of all Lawson is a greedy eater who knows about food and can write like an angel. "I hate the new-age voodoo about eating", she declares. "The notion that foods are either harmful or healing, that a good diet makes you a good person". Hurrah! How to Eat is the perfect book for anyone who knows that food is more than fuel. --Nick Wroe

Move over Delia, 30 Dec 2008
Lovely...lovely.., 16 Aug 2008
Where are all the veg?
wonderful reading and cooking, 28 Jun 2008
I like the way Nigella writes- it's as if you're having a conversation with her. The introduction to each recipe is always good, a bit of historical information or personal anecdote that makes wonderful reading.
I've made a few dishes from "How to Eat" and I think her stews do work as well as making the best roast chicken, beef & gravy!
I would recommend the following:
Basic Roast Chicken- pp. 8-9
Chicken & Chick pea Tagine- pp. 111-2
Beef Stew w/ anchovies & thyme- pp. 112-3
Braised Pheasant w/ mushrooms & bacon- pp. 114-5 (I used chicken for this)
Chicken Stew w/ couscous- pp. 228-229
Roast beef & gravy- pp. 278-80
Highly recommended, 26 Feb 2008
if you can only have one food book in your life time, then it'll gotta be 'how to eat'. buy two, one by your bed side and one for cooking use. i don't call it cook book, as it's not only tell you how to cook, but the food philosophy.
Fun at first but never gets used, 02 Jan 2008
When I first received this book, I enjoyed reading through it and the organisation of recipes depending on the event you are cooking for is a nice change. However in practice I never use it. I often pick it up for inspiration but I almost never cook from it. I don't use a recipe book for everyday cooking and nothing in this book is ever quite what I am looking for if I am cooking for a family gathering or a dinner party. Nigella's lemon meringue icecream is now a staple in our house, but not much else. Also, I have to admit that her "Wow, be like me - I am so knowledgable and so fragrant and chummy and just a bit naughty" approach to life gets up my nose and usually ends up making me choose a recipe from a different book instead.
One of my most used books, 25 Nov 2007
I bought this title after Domestic Goddess had enchanted me. Initially the lack of pictures rather put me off, it is a very wordy book, but I've come to see that as an advantage. There's no perfectly presented meal to depress you when your own effort looks as if it were thrown at the plate.
I love the straight forward-ness of the recipes, and like all Nigella books her expectation that you will probably substitute ingredients.
I've made the macaroni cheese from the "Cooking for babies and small children " section so often I've memorised it. I adore the lemon linguine, and the rice pudding is delicious and is the first recipe not to confuse my poor simple brain.
Great from basics to advanced!, 03 Sep 2007
I bought this book last year and the one thing that had put me off was that there were no pictures, so it was difficult to get an idea of a recipe-especially if you were cooking it for the first time.
I then realised it has all the basics that you need to know and things that i was never taught at home (as i'm not english).it was great to get an idea for things such as lunch and dinner.Last night i tried the salmon baked in foil and believe me it was good!
There may not be any pictures but the recipes certainly are fantastic and so much fun to cook!
I really recommend this book as it teaches you everything you need to know from bechamel sauce to a slow roast lamb and its so simple to follow!

Product Description
Her devotees will be relieved to learn that, in Nigella Bites, the goddess returns among us, her attributes unmodified: the cashmere twinsets, the hair, the postmodern penchant for trailer trash, the eerily intense gaze, the Kim Novak eyebrows, all are present in this lavishly illustrated accompaniment to the TV series. To these may now be added the Playboy-bunny T-shirt and the lilac pashmina worn recklessly and negligently at the barbecue. So much for the essentials, now what about the food? The Nigella formula of fashion-flouting comfort food with knobs on is now pretty firmly established, so it will come as no surprise to find here American Pancakes with Wafer-Bacon and Maple Syrup, Chicken Soup with Kniedlach, Italian Sausages with Lentils, Whitebait or Chocolate Fudge Cake; yet there is room too for more sophisticated fare such as Thai Yellow Pumpkin and Seafood Curry, Bitter Orange Ice-Cream and Bagna Cauda. The chapter titles give as good an indication of the approach as one might want: they include All-Day Breakfast, Comfort Food, TV Dinners, Rainy Day and Trashy. Trashy (and one feels this chapter will in many ways give the most pleasure) offers a modified version of the now-notorious Ham in Coca-Cola from How to Eat, deep-fried Bounty bars in batter and the calorifically devastating Elvis Presley's Fried Peanut-Butter and Banana Sandwich. This exemplifies the Lawson approach, teasing but serious, liberating too. It would be fair to say that there is probably nothing in this luscious and clever book that you wouldn't find a pleasure to cook and eat at home. --Robin Davidson

The best fudge cake recipe ever!, 11 Aug 2008
Nigellas book for me are like having a big sister in the kitchen with you talking you through something in a friendly, none threatening way.
I must say when I read a few reviews that gave one star I began to wonder if I was reading my book right. But I figured that Nigellas way of cooking, presenting her food and the recipes themselves are never going to be everyones cup of tea. I find Nigellas recipes quite retro with the right about of modern added to them to balance them.
If you have yet to purchase this book I can recommend all the recipes but give a particular thumbs up to:
The Kerela style omelette with green chutney. I have no ties to Kerela but can safely say omelettes are made the same way across the pond in Karachi. This dish makes a lovely brunch or light lunch dish too.
Chocolate fudge cake-my far the best recipe in the world for fudge cake. I have made it so many times I've lost count. I often substitute the sour cream for a low fat greek yogurt and have has success everytime. The cake is so good you won't want to share it.
The squid recipe (TV dinners) is amazing. Something so simple is so tasty.
Bitter orange ice cream is so quick and easy to make you'll make it again and again.
There are so many recipes you'll find something for any occasion.
I would recommend this book along with Nigella Express if you are looking for books that not only inspire you to cook but also look nice on your coffee table.
my best ever cookbook, 04 Sep 2007
time and time again i end up making recipes from this book after spending hours scanning all my other cookery books. lamb shanks, egyptian tomato salad, ham in coca cola and sweetcorn eggy bake thing are particular favourites.
very good but about 1 cm away from being perfect, 03 Aug 2007
theres little wrong with this book in fact i love glancing through it even though im not in the kitchen or even planning to enter in the very near future. however, i cant ingnore this, but there is one small problem.
they content, though very good and well thought of, is lacking more recipies. i mean yes they all are very intresting and good to eat but unfortunately it is a tad bit on the dull side if all u can do is just tweak and tweak again, i know this book is for following a series but i still think that nigella shoud of added a few more extra
other than that its a perfect book , large text ( unlike so many other books in which i sometimes have to squint to read) and throughly enjoyable recipies such as that ever luring chocolate fudge cake
Great Food, Great Fun, 28 Aug 2006
This is the first of Ms Lawson's books that I encountered and I absolutely loved her style of writing. Its all so realistic..."you can make this dish by doing this, this and this but if its all too much trouble just pop the lot in a blender and blitz." Her pancakes are a regular feature at breakfast in our house as are most of the cakes and biscuits. I think one of the most enjoyable aspects of this book is that you can sit down and read it at any time, not just when you are looking for inspiration!
Another excellent offering from Nigella, 27 Feb 2006
This is an easy to follow, fun book for both beginners and more experienced cooks alike. Nigella Bites is simply a wonderful addition to any cookbook collection and great if you fancy trying something a little different. The section on Tacky food is particularly entertaining. Clearly laid out and with excellent pictures. You won't be dissapointed.

Product Description
The cover of Forever Summer features Nigella Lawson posing in a convertible car with luggage piled behind her, as though driving along the Riviera. Her beaming smile, however, betrays a hint of strain. Can she be wondering whether success and fame constitute something of a treadmill? Given that she has attained iconic single-name status, will she ever be able to return, should she wish, to the humble obscurity of serious journalism? If treadmill it is, it's one she continues to work with considerable panache. What she never lacks is poise: her effortless blend of the artless and the deeply considered does not fail, here, to beguile. Nigella's appeal is, of course, a lifestyle thing--you, too, could be at once an intelligent modern woman and an old-fashioned vamp, draped in pashminas and liable impulsively to pop off for a run down to Monte. In all this, and especially if you take her television persona into account, the food can seem a little incidental. But it is of course at the heart of the project. Nigella Lawson seems to have a knack of thinking creatively about food which allows her to turn a recipe over in her hands, as it were, give it a tweak and turn it into something livelier and fresher than it was before. So her Greek Salad marinates the red onion and omits the sapid cucumber, substituting sliced fennel. Barbecued Sea Bass is stuffed with preserved lemons (pickled, incidentally, in a usef! ully unusual way). Roast Potatoes are given in their Swedish Hasselback form (sliced nearly through, so they fan out in cooking). The section on ices is adorned with Margarita Ice Cream ("surely what angels would eat at their hen night"), while Nigella indulges her inner slapper with Slut-Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly. Above all, she communicates, through dozens and dozens of recipes, the ideals of freshness, simplicity, spontaneity and immediacy, a combination it's hard to resist. --Robin Davidson

Move over Delia, 30 Dec 2008
Lovely...lovely.., 16 Aug 2008
Where are all the veg?
wonderful reading and cooking, 28 Jun 2008

Not Nigella's Best, 31 Jul 2008
It is well known that in my eyes Nigella can do no wrong - until this book.
I have bought every single one of her books and watched every series on TV, but this was just so wide of the mark.
Thankfully she has bounced back to her usual sparkling form and calm has been restored in her books and TV series.
I would recommend that you buy this book ONLY based on watching the series not because you assume as its Nigella it will be fabulous.
Truly scrumptious, 12 Aug 2004
Quite simply, Nigella Lawson will enable you to gain a reputation amongst friends for being a brilliant cook. What your friends won't know is just how effortless it all is when you are in Nigella's capable hands. Her narrative is just as eulogistic as her other books, which means that recipes you would normally overlook end up being firm favourites, thanks to her powers of persuasion. As a stand alone read, this book is well written and colourful, even out of the kitchen. Don't be put off by the summery title, these are just foods that remind her of summer. Most of these dishes could be cooked or adapted to suit any time of the year. That's another good thing- she doesn't mind if you mess about with her recipes to make it suit your own taste. She often recommends alternatives and is very rarely bossy and only when she needs to be (twice I think). I tried the Chocolate Peanut Squares and used pecan nuts instead of peanuts. I also used dark and white chocolate instead of milk chocolate. Whatever I used, the plate was cleared and colleagues and family were begging for more. It's now a firm favourite and I can now pretty much rustle it up now without needing the book. I also tried the Braised Little Gem Lettuces and was amazed to find they taste like a nutty version of asparagus when cooked this way. The Pasta al Sugo Crudo tasted nothing like I expected Italian Tomato-ey pasta to taste. It was fresher, more fragrant and tasted much lighter than I would have imagined. If you, like me, think life doesn't get better than a gathering of friends and greedy portions of superb food and great conversation, then buy this book.
