Fails as an everyday diet book, 05 Aug 2008
I have recently been diagnosed with insulin resistance, and told I needed to follow a low GI diet. A recipe book created by a chef who was also diagnosed as insulin resistant seemed like an obvious choice, but I was very disappointed for several reasons.
First, most of the recipes do not seem practical for everyday living. Many of them have long cooking times and need perishable or unusual ingredients, and therefore need forward planning.
Second, I feel there is not enough information to enable the reader to make their own low GI recipes. There is GI table in the front, but over-simplified (for my tastes) into low, medium or high GI and not containing that many foods. Also, bread in particular may be low, medium or high GI depending on variety - again, I'd have liked more information.
Third, I felt many of the recipes were a bit of a cop-out. Meat and fish have zero GI, and a good few of the recipes are meat/fish with vegetables or salad, served with boiled new potatoes. I don't need new ways of cooking meat, I need ways to avoid boiled new potatoes with every meal. Also, almost all the deserts are based on stewed fruits.
All that having been said, I really liked the soup section, and there are a few useful and adaptable recipes in here. I particularly liked the idea of using pearl barley to make risotto. It's a good 'special occasions' book, or an addition to other GI books you may have; just don't try using it as a diet book unless you have a lot of spare time!
fantastic GI recipes, 30 Dec 2007
I was sceptical about Warrall-Thompson and GI since he seems to endorse everything and anything. But in fact the science bit explaining GI is by an expert and the recipes are by WT and tweaked by another expert to make them lower GI. The result is a set of recipes that are simply great. We have made about half of the recipes in the book and every single one has been delicious and we will make them again. Unlike some other cookery books, if you follow the instructions, the recipes just work. (The only criticism is that he doesn't always give a heat setting - do I fry the fish cakes at a high or medium heat?) Another reviewer mentioned that some take a while and that's true (but the fish pie really is worth it!) and some involve overnight marinades but the techniques are not difficult and the results are superb.
Don't be intimidated - these are easy!, 13 Feb 2007
I've had this book for a year and use it every week. The recipes are almost all accessible, delicious, and by no means as time-consuming as you might think. I've lost the half-stone I intended to, but have stuck with this new way of eating as I find it a pleasure.
Eventually a non-frustrating diet!, 24 Jul 2006
This book with stunning photography is nothing like a diet book. I really like it because all the recipes of the book are easy to prepare, delicious and there are recipes for breakfasts, dinners and even snacks! It is really easy to be on this diet as you are not frustrated, you can eat good food, and you don't have to eliminate any food groups.
The texts are very clear and helped me understand how the GI Diet works and what are its positive effects on my body.
GI and the South Beach Diet, 13 May 2006
I've been on the South Beach Diet for over a month now (and doing well I hasten to add) and brought this book to liven things up a bit.
The advice in here is bit different to the South Beach (which is based on GI food values) and explains how to combine low to high GI foods to maximise choices.
The recipes look simple enough (and delicous) and overall as a keen cook I am really pleased to find some recipes to suit my diet plan and hobby. There is now a new book out on the GL diet (boy do they like to confuse us) based on Glycaemic Load! I may try that next!!!!!!

I bought this book as my hubby is diabetic and I wanted some yummy recipes which are healthy. And this book fits the bill, the dishes are simple but tasty. Lots of variety, the chicken tagine with apricots and couscous is really good. There are plenty of fish recipes which include a very tasty Moroccan spiced mackerel. The recipes are not bland they are tasty but healthy, which is great.
The standard is what one would expect from A W Thompson. A good buy. Delicious, 04 Apr 2008
I've just cooked another dinner from this book and yet again it was scrumptious as well as healthy. I'd recommend this book to anyone, not just those with diabetes. Yummy! A Tasty Number!, 19 Feb 2008
A test of good recipes is when non-diabetics enjoy them too. I've been feeding my family on recipes from this book and the other AWT Diabetic Weight Loss Cookbook and they haven't noticed - but their waistlines have. It's difficult to even get a cherry muffin when everyone enjoys them! Really clear information and has helped me to adapt other favourite recipes to make them more diabetic friendly. Would recommend this or the other AWT cookbook to anyone. A Real Winner from AWT, 24 Jan 2005
Fantastic recipes. Tremendous variety of products. An abundance of information for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Everything I have cooked so far has been full of colour and flavour. This is exactly what is required for food lovers who must change their diet as a result of diabetes. Healthy eating For Diabetes, 10 Feb 2004
I must say, this book is a lot better than some of the diabetic recipe books I have seen (and I have seen a lot in 31 years)! There is plenty of information introducing food facts, the glycemic index, recipe tips and the latest research info on diet. There are 100 recipes and colour photos throughout the book. With such recipes as: scrambled eggs and smoked salmon timbales, toasted pasta in wild mushroom broth, stuffed sardines, and bread and butter pudding with raspberry sauce you really cannot go wrong! Not a single recipe resembling the likes of "Sawdust casserole" which I have seen too many a time in diabetic recipe publications. This book would make an ideal gift for anybody interested in a healthier approach to eating, and is a lot better than some of the so called diabetic cookbooks. I will definitely be making use of it. I like the way a chef has written the recipes and as it is co-written with a dietitian you can be assured the recipes will be good and taste good. Very impressed!

Some superb recipes. I love the apricot & all bran cake, very popular with my friends, but I added ginger after the first try. The nice thing is that this is an English cookery book, so we can easily get the ingredients. Thanks Antony.

The miracle method improves again..., 24 Jul 2006
At first, the new method may seem a bit complicated but it's definitely not! On the contrary, it helped me understand how to combine foods and then eat more and a greater variety of foods! Antony Worrall Thompson's recipes are delicious, easy to prepare and adapted to the whole family.
I have already lost 5 kilos in a month and I have never feel deprived!!! That is just a miracle!
GL for calorie counters, 01 Mar 2006
Great book , appetising pictures , nice recipes which use easily available ingredients and larger portions than patrick holford or nigel denby. However some contradiction with both patrick holford and nigel denby viewpoints on gl value of some foods. Some recipes do contain sugar in various forms other fast carb foods(rice) and as the gl of the recipes is not given , I am a little dubious that they are low gl. He seems to advocate watching the calories rather than the gl of foods and cites this as one of the reasons for not calculating gl of the recipes. A Little dissapointing overall as does not lend itself to using recipes with other gl diet plans.
Great way for foodies to lose weight/eat healthily, 03 Feb 2006
Wozzer has done it again - I was running out of recipes from his GI Diet book and was very happy to see this new book at my local Waitrose last week... A wider range of foods, and bigger portion sizes are covered in this book vs. the GI book. The photography is great and the recipes are delicious - lots of herbs and spices used, not too strict on oils and fats so your stomach won't believe you're dieting! Have dropped 6 kilos in just over a month and haven't felt deprived once... I would actually give it 4.5 stars if the rating system allowed as once again there are a couple of things that could be improved: - not enough info on preparation and cooking times (especially important in a book that sometimes advocates using dried pulses rather than canned ones... so factor in overnight soaking and cooking!). There are super-quick recipes too thouugh. - many of the recipes cater for 4-6 people. There are just 2 of us at home which means either dividing up ingredient quantities or eating each recipe over several meals. They are yummy though... - finally the recipes are grouped by ingredient type (grains, pulses, desserts etc.) rather than by meal type (breakfast, dinner, snack) as in the GI book. Personally I preferred the latter. All in all a fab book (buy the GI one too) if you love your food and find most diet food torture to eat, you'll get along with this eating plan.
Makes sense, 02 Feb 2006
After being hounded by this diet and that diet for years on end, the GI diet looked like the way to go, but after seeing the amount of lovely food that was high GI, I was put off a bit. The GL (glycaemic load) means you can have some on these but in moderation as its more quantity rather than the actual GI index you go by. Sounds complicated but it's not and some of the recipes sound delicious and are quite simple to do.

Tasty healthy recipes, 15 Dec 2008
Brilliant, 11 Sep 2008
Some superb recipes. I love the apricot & all bran cake, very popular with my friends, but I added ginger after the first try. The nice thing is that this is an English cookery book, so we can easily get the ingredients. Thanks Antony.

From the horse's mouth..., 05 Dec 2007
Not only do I own this terrific book, I'm in it! However, this really is a super collection of recipes and there is something for everyone between the covers. I particularly like the idea that this is not simply a collection put together by one author but, rather, is a widely eclectic collection of food influenced by a variety of cultures. Well worth a place on any kitchen bookshelf!

Great Book., 17 Sep 2008
This is a fantastic book, the recipes are excellent, well laid out, some recipes are more fattening than others, but there is very clear nutritional information, on each of the recipes, to help you make the right choice.
A great achievement, using Splenda, and it works very well, well done Antony Worrall Thomson. Fully recommended book.
A complete con!, 17 Jun 2008
I bought this book expecting to find delicious desserts for people trying to watch their weight. In fact it is just an advert for Splenda! He has got rid of the sugar but totally ignored the fat content. Portion sizes range from 20g fat to 40g in some cases - how can that be healthy! Shame on you Anthony, this is the last cook book I will by with your name on it.
Sweet!, 16 May 2008
This is a beautiful book - great recipes, really easy to make, and mouthwatering food photography. I can't wait to get baking - with teatime treats and desserts to really impress. Its amazing that there's hardly any added sugar in these recipes - seems like the best of both worlds!

Tasty healthy recipes, 15 Dec 2008
Brilliant, 11 Sep 2008
Some superb recipes. I love the apricot & all bran cake, very popular with my friends, but I added ginger after the first try. The nice thing is that this is an English cookery book, so we can easily get the ingredients. Thanks Antony.

Go for it , 18 Jan 2008
My family love good, tasty home cooked meals and as a working mum I have turned to anthony again and again. We are working our way through this book at the moment and after every new dish I ask 'Would you have it again?' Nine times out of ten the answer has been 'yes please!' Anthony`s list of comprehensive store cupboard ingredients is superb as there is always something I can cook, even when the cupboard is virtually bare! The recipes are straightforward, mostly quick, and delicious. So what if it isn't haute cuisine. When you have three hungry boys who need to eat a balanced healthy meal at the end of the day, Anthony`s will do for me! He's even inspired my twelve year old to take up cooking......
