Very tasty!!, 26 Oct 2008
This is an excellent book. I have made quite a few of the recipes and every one has been a winner. I have used the sweet cream bases and created my own flavours based on their recommendations.
Please make sure that you whip the cream as the book doesn't state that you have to!
All receipes are very simple and easy to follow.
Great but..., 29 Jul 2008
Great book, loads of delicious recipes, and explains how ice cream works. Also has a good (if belt-busting) section of cakes and biscuits (presumably so that you can bash them into bits afterwards and add them to your ice cream). The beginning of this short book is a history of Ben and Jerry's which was interesting but a bit twee.
My only complaint is that all quantities are given in the rather vague US 'cups' rather than millilitres or grams (or even pounds and ounces). So you're told to put a quarter cup of this, with a half cup of that.
Don't suppose a bit more or a bit less of anything will hurt your ice cream, but slightly annoying to have to convert quantities every time.
A truly great book!, 03 Jul 2008
This is the best book ever! I hadn't even taken delivery of the icecream maker before my son snatched the book from me and made Chocolate Brownies and Giant Cookies.
THe recipes are simple, fun and very tasty. Great for all the family!
Best out of 3 books purchased, 03 Jul 2008
After buying my Cuisinart Professional Ice Cream maker I ordered three books from Amazon to help me in creating ice cream to die for!
I find that the Ben & Jerry's book is the one I use the most. I was initially put off by the use of raw eggs rather than a traditional custard base but realised that as ice cream is frozen it is not the same as using raw eggs in say a mousse or mayonnaise.
The method for making the most of the ice creams is very quick - no waiting around to chill cooked custard. I find that I can reduce the quantity of sugar slightly in the recipes with no effect on the results.
Lastly the texture of the ice cream after being hardened in the freezer for a little while is the better than the recipes in my other books.
I think this is a worthwhile purchase for anyone making an ice cream maker as Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Das and Green & Blacks ice creams are probably what you are tring to recreate.
Not very impressed, 30 Jun 2008
All in all I wish I hadn't ticked the box and opted to take this as a suggested extra when I bought an ice-cream maker. Quite apart from strange US measures (cups) and odd descriptions of different types of cream (that don't chime with our UK system of single, double etc), the recipes are riddled with odd licquers and ingredients you would never go out of your way to buy. For my tastes, a lot of the recipes are over the top in cloying sweetness. If you're buying an ice-cream maker, you'll get some basic recipes with the machine anyway and then you can download plenty for free once you have worked out the basics. Still, at least it wasn't very much money wasted!

No good, 03 Nov 2008
I bought one of these a while ago. In less than a year the teflon wore off, leaving just bare aluminium. Everything stuck to it and it became impossible to clean. So I threw it away. If you're buying a grill buy a heavy duty non-Teflon one.
Delicious, 15 Aug 2007
We recently bought this grill, and I wish I'd got one sooner.
It is so easy and convenient to use. You just preheat it for a few minutes, and then pop in your chosen food. Leave for the recommended time and voila! We've done all sorts in it already - steak, sausages, lamb escalopes, chunks of vegetables and even naan bread. It is so convenient; no more wasting energy and space by heating the oven for that garlic baguette, just pop it in the grill. It is a lot healthier too, as the fat drips away into the tray provided. The steak was great - I like mine well done, and it was well done, but still moist and tender.
You must try nectarines in it, they are out of this world. Just slice up a couple of nectarines, and pop them in the grill for about 5 minutes. Delicious as a healthy dessert.
I really recommend this to everyone who wants to eat more healthily and save on energy.

I really recommend this to everyone who wants to eat more healthily and save on energy. Fantastic!!!!!! Such a bargain!!! LOVE it!!!, 24 Feb 2008
Oh my god this is great for the beginner, I am just starting out and have gone Orgaic, this gave me so many great ideas, its a little bit of the quick version, you use a lot of ready made custard and ready made chocolate, but to start with thats what you want and if you want to that can be substituted for home maded custard base, great intro and large section on ice-cream such puddings like chocolate banana ice cream pie, and baked alaska!!! --- I whole heartedly recommend this book, so cheap but a real Gem!!! Truly easy, 30 Dec 2007
These recipes are really straightforward, and there is a good introduction which explains the principles of making ice cream. It is well written and friendly, although each recipe has two identical steps which could have been left in the introduction.
Most of the recipes are based on custard or cream (with sections on yogurt-based and non-dairy desserts), which is fair enough, although I wish there were even more variety, and more explanation of when and how to use eggs (it basically says not to).
Overall, it is a great little book. a waste of money, 23 Feb 2007
I bought this book based on a previous review I read, in the hope that having purchased my new ice-cream machine that I would make some yummy ice-cream for the family. Well, its a no-no. To my horror the recipes where less than enticing, I warn you that tomato and basil ice-cream (found in this book) belongs on a plate with mozzarella in the starters section and not as a dessert.
The golden fig and Mandarin and Chocolate Ice where not much enjoyed either. I also think that their vanilla ice-cream made with icing sugar and ready made carton custard etc sounds not only unhealthy but hardly appetizing.
Sorry but I give this one the thumbs down. Deliciously simple recipes, 17 Oct 2004
I was given this book along with an ice cream maker for my birthday and already we are hooked. The recipes are exactly what they say - simple to make. That doesn't mean they aren't fantastic because the ones we have tried rival any of the 'posh' brands you can buy. Our favourites so far are the chocolate honeycomb and the lemon meringue - so tempting they have barely made it to the freezer to harden off - they've been started on while still in the machine! The only down side is that I'm really struggling to stick to my diet now! The book does have some low fat frozen yoghurt recipes which we will be trying soon!

great for new vegans and old ones alike, 10 Dec 2008
as a vegan for only one year I have to say that it was very difficult for me to adapt to my new diet, eating plain pasta, bread or fries with salad every day... and I had to look for some ideas to keep up. this book gave me more than that, full of ideas I discovered new tastes, new ways of cooking, I never thought before that I could have so much fun cooking vegan. now I know that vegan food is not restrictive but creative, with compassion.
this book makes you wanna cook! , 22 Aug 2008
wow! i've got numerous vegan cookbooks, some of which contain the odd valuable recipe, but this is something else. every recipe sounds delicious and they are by no means hard to make. although quite a few of the recipes have fairly long prep times, they are definately worth it. my omni boyfriend is even impressed at his delicious vegan dinner. one really good thing about this book is that at the beggining there are a couple of chapters on how to cook a grain, how to cook a veg, and descriptions of different equipment you may need. recipes include something for every occasion. Those from the mix and match section are my personal favourites.
so if you are a vegan and need help sorting out your diet and your kitchen this is the book for you. i feel like i'll never need to buy another cookbook again!

Stocking Filler, 14 Nov 2008
I bought this book to go with a cheese board I bought for an xmas present. Got to say it is such a cute little book with some great tips.
cupcake madness, 29 Dec 2008
ilike this little book it has a lot of novelty value and it is quite small with nice pictures. it does have a few strange ingrediants in but i havent tried the recipes yet im pretty sure they will work out good. ive invested in the cider vinegar and other such like bits and bobs to help me do the cakes. i wonder if there is a nut free dairy free cake book out there and then i defo would be in heaven
Cupcakes for ALL! An absolute treat!, 22 Dec 2008
I bought this cupcake cookbook because I had a container of soy milk to use up. I'm not a vegan, but am an avid cook & baker. I found the descriptions & notes by the authors delightful, witty & entertaining. Of the recipes I've made, I've been pleased with each & every one. I used organic stoneground whole wheat flour in place of their all-purpose flour. In addition, I opted for organic honey (I realise it's not vegan) in lieu of the granulated sugar for a few recipes. So, don't be afraid to use this cookbook as a springboard for experimenting further based upon your personal tastes & preferences or ingredient choices.
I can think of only two ways they could improve on this book. First would be to have a photo of each & every cupcake with its recipe. Second, for the variations to a basic recipe, make it a bit less like fine print for them - one may miss some great suggestions as a result of missing the small print!
Viva la cupcake, whether vegan or not!
Vegan Cupcakes Take Over THe World, 03 Nov 2008
This is one of the best examples of positive thinking in action, the Oprah winfrey angel effect - you are who you most practice to be.
The proof is in the pudding.
Now Vegan Cupcakes really are taking over the world - Wholefoods market in Kensington now sell vegan cupcakes!
This book proves the pathetic free-from vegan bake-well tarts by leading supermarkets need a serious makeover and reformulation.
THIS is the way forward!
Just gorgeous, 20 Oct 2008
This book is just fantastic. The array of different flavours and sorts of cupcake is awesome. There are cupcakes for cosy days at home, summer picnics and even posher occasions. I have baked batch after batch for family functions and everybody loves them. I don't announce that they are vegan and only mention it if asked. People are always surprised- assuming vegan food is boring. Far from it!
The nicest cakes I have ever made have been from this book. Try it- your friends and family will thank you for it :D And you will be quite pleased with yourself too :D
With this book it is so easy to make delicious, varied and exciting vegan loveliness :)
p.s try the smores recipe...my personal favourite... so moist.. mmmm... i'm off to bake :D
disappointing! :(, 20 Sep 2008
I was shocked to see that most recipes use Soy Milk/tofu which is proven to be very unhealthy, as soy is only good when it's fermented! Beside that, it also uses a lot of Margarine, which is also proven unhealthy and canola oil. :(
The pictures are nice though ...

I have had impressive results from several recipes with lots of mmm's and arrrh's from guests. Definitely a book to keep to hand for those long sultry summer days - esp the recipe for Margarita sorbet!

Ruby wedding cake enjoyed by all!, 22 Sep 2008
"Cooking without made easy" arrived just in time for me to hand it to our daughter for her to cook our Ruby Wedding anniversary cake for the small family celebration we were having. She baked the rhubarb and vanilla cake, and instead of icing it she covered it with pink rose-petals. It looked good, and tasted delicious! In fact all the family enjoyed it, and now our granddaughter age 9 is looking forward to trying other recipes for me.
Until I bought this book, our family and friends would ask me to bring food for myself to any celebrations, as I am allergic to wheat and sugar (painful blisters on my lips)while milk products only set off an upset tummy and mild eczema. At last, people can make make me a treat which they can enjoy cooking and eating too. So far I have not needed to use the book myself, but am sure I could use several of the recipes in spite of my ill health, low energy and lack of culinary skills.
Best book for recepies that are 'free from', 27 Jan 2007
This book was a life saver in our home. My daughter is on a gluten, casein and sugar free diet and I am on an anti-Candida diet. Until this book we ate free from meals poorly adapted from the originals that we were not allowed to eat. The Cooking Without Made Easy gave us instant, simple dishes, that taste great, do not require expensive or delicatessen ingridients. Also for shopping outside UK, for international readers, this is very easy to follow. What I also like about the book is that every time there is an ingredient that one might be allergic to it is considered optional or an is alternative provided. There is a variety for vegetarian meals, and a very good selection of meat meals.
Among all the books I have purshased in the last two years, this is the best ever and almost every page is marked with a favourite tick. Highly recommended!
Life Saver, 28 Aug 2006
This book was a real "life saver" for me when my husband was diagnosed with candida problem (which we had never heard of) and was put on yeast, dairy & sugar free diet. To start with some of the receipies were out as they contained tomatoes, which were on the band list but the book gave me ideas and pointed me in the right direction and the suggested alternative ingrediants were very useful. He is now a lot better but we still use the receipies - they are all quick and easy and never fail to taste wonderful. Two friends have recently been diagnosed with wheat, glutten & dairy allergies and I have bought them copies of this book which has become their bible! If you love bread (like my husband)but can't have yeast try soda bread!
Highly recommended, 27 Apr 2006
This book really was more than a cook book to me; it was an inspiration especially when I read the introduction. I have now vowed to change my diet, using the 'Cooking Without' recommendations and recipes, to improve my life and it really has made a difference. 'Cooking without made easy' is a fantastic book to complete the trilogy of the 'Cooking Without' series, all of which are an asset to any kitchen. The fact that those with or without a specific diet to adhere to can enjoy the recipes is a credit to the book, as all recipes are tasty with simple to follow instructions. The desserts, cakes and biscuits are so delicious that I have surprised many a guest to my house when I tell them that there is no sugar or milk in the ingredients! Hopefully this book and the trilogy will change others lives as it has changed mine. I have recommended this book and others in the series to many friends and family and highly recommend it to you.
Thank you for this book!, 03 Nov 2005
I've spent the past four weeks scouring supermarket labels and health food stores for something to eat (I'm meant to be avoiding wheat, dairy and sugar)- I'm fed up with houmous and oat cakes! Most of the books I've read include recipes requiring masses of weird-sounding ingredients and complicated instructions. This book really does keep it simple, with many recipes requiring no more than six or eight ingredients. It covers the whole range of meal types, from soup and dips through snacks and main courses, to desserts and cakes (difficult to find when you're avoiding added sugar). Sadly there's no bread recipe, which is the thing I most want to find (bought bread substitutes and baking mixes are expensive and horrible). I could have done without the first 26 pages of personal testimonies and stuff about 'uncovering your life path',which I lost patience with quite quickly - I was really only interested in the food!

Excellent Buy, 18 Jul 2005
Very imformative about the ways and means of making icecream. Ample recipes for icecream, sorbets and yoghurts plus well illustrated. A definite good buy and not the type of book that will end up at the car boot sale next year.
No more bought ice cream!, 23 May 2004
I have had impressive results from several recipes with lots of mmm's and arrrh's from guests.
