Great but..., 29 Jul 2008
Great book, loads of delicious recipes, and explains how ice cream works. Also has a good (if belt-busting) section of cakes and biscuits (presumably so that you can bash them into bits afterwards and add them to your ice cream). The beginning of this short book is a history of Ben and Jerry's which was interesting but a bit twee.
My only complaint is that all quantities are given in the rather vague US 'cups' rather than millilitres or grams (or even pounds and ounces). So you're told to put a quarter cup of this, with a half cup of that.
Don't suppose a bit more or a bit less of anything will hurt your ice cream, but slightly annoying to have to convert quantities every time.
A truly great book!, 03 Jul 2008
This is the best book ever! I hadn't even taken delivery of the icecream maker before my son snatched the book from me and made Chocolate Brownies and Giant Cookies.
THe recipes are simple, fun and very tasty. Great for all the family!
Best out of 3 books purchased, 03 Jul 2008
After buying my Cuisinart Professional Ice Cream maker I ordered three books from Amazon to help me in creating ice cream to die for!
I find that the Ben & Jerry's book is the one I use the most. I was initially put off by the use of raw eggs rather than a traditional custard base but realised that as ice cream is frozen it is not the same as using raw eggs in say a mousse or mayonnaise.
The method for making the most of the ice creams is very quick - no waiting around to chill cooked custard. I find that I can reduce the quantity of sugar slightly in the recipes with no effect on the results.
Lastly the texture of the ice cream after being hardened in the freezer for a little while is the better than the recipes in my other books.
I think this is a worthwhile purchase for anyone making an ice cream maker as Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Das and Green & Blacks ice creams are probably what you are tring to recreate.
Not very impressed, 30 Jun 2008
All in all I wish I hadn't ticked the box and opted to take this as a suggested extra when I bought an ice-cream maker. Quite apart from strange US measures (cups) and odd descriptions of different types of cream (that don't chime with our UK system of single, double etc), the recipes are riddled with odd licquers and ingredients you would never go out of your way to buy. For my tastes, a lot of the recipes are over the top in cloying sweetness. If you're buying an ice-cream maker, you'll get some basic recipes with the machine anyway and then you can download plenty for free once you have worked out the basics. Still, at least it wasn't very much money wasted!

I bought this book about a year ago when I first bought my ice-cream machine.
If you dread making custard like me this book is for you. It has very clear instruction and sparks your culinary creativity. I've made countless batches of ice-cream from this book for almost everyone I know and always get loads of compliment. My boyfriend is now addicted to cookie n cream ice-cream and raspberry ice-cream is a big hit among my friends. Highly recommended!

Inspiring, 14 Aug 2008
If you're hunting for a cupcake book for decoration ideas, this is the book for you. There's only a few sponge recipes at the beginning, which then includes the different frosting and icing that can be added to create the finished article. The rest of the book is about the different decoartion designs that can be incorporated to suit every occassion - not the type of book for someone like me if you wanted simple cupcake recipes.
Pretty ideas, 03 Jun 2008
Although short on recipes (but the basic recipes do include ideas to vary them eg adding lemon zest etc) the designs are all so pretty with lots of lovely photos - and look easy to do. Perfect if, like me, you just want lots of cute, fun ideas that you don't need to be an expert to make yourself.
Cute Little book with cute little cupcakes, 21 Mar 2008
This is physically a small book but don't let this put you off as there are in excess of a hundred pages. I like the photography used in this book as it makes the cupcakes look gorgeous! I found it really inspiring - it was one of the first cupcake books I purchased when I got into baking last year and I still refer to it.
It doesn't provide lots of cupcake recipes, just vanilla sponge and chocolate sponge (+ a few recipes for buttercream frosting and icing) but the idea behind this book is to give you the basic recipe so you can make cupcakes and then to provide you with plenty of inspiration in terms of decoration! The instructions and pictures are all really clear and easy to follow so the book is a really great place to start if you want to make fancy cupcakes!
don't bother, 21 Mar 2008
As an avid cake baker i looked at this in my local discount bookstore. It is a very small book and there was nothing within it that inspired me at all. Rather dull, 'jumping on the cupcake bandwagon' methinks.

I've been spoilt, 26 Sep 2008
Not entirely sure about this book - it arrived in the post and it was the pricest cook book I've bought in a long time because it's not discounted. Admittedly I bought it to meet the free delivery amount and reached for a brand (I really wanted to make the big coconut cake on the cover.)
If you are used to new cookbooks with pretty pictures, this isn't for you. It's old school american format, a few pics in the middle. (It's printed 1999?) This one doesn't have the cupcake focus but since I didn't love the cupcakes in NY I'm not fussed. Plus the vanilla and red velvet recipes are widely available on the internet, including a video guide somewhere! (If you are ever there, the red velvet cake is gorgeous, plus you'd have to be very open minded about food colouring to make it at home). In debate about whether to send it back or not, mainly because price to love ratio is lacking. Then again, that chocolate cake looks nice on the cover...
Brilliant!, 20 Nov 2007
I was so excited when I received this book, all the recipes are amazing! I have made two of the cakes within this book, and I have to say I have never made such delicious and rewarding (let alone massive) cakes! Thank you Magnolia for this book it is lovely.
Mmmmm mmmmmm gooood!!!!!, 08 Oct 2007
I bought this book after having been to the shop earlier this year. It's amazing! I would agree with one of the previous people...you certainly don't need the amount of frosting they suggest. I made half the amount suggested for 20 or so cupcakes and was left with loads spare. Everything you make is so easy. My favourites so far have been the chocolate chip cookies. I would defo recommend this book, and I'll soon be buying the follow up to this!
HOW Sweet?!!!, 26 Aug 2007
I bought this book and the Buttercup Bake Shop one about 2 weeks ago but have only just got around to making things. I chose the Caramel Pecan Cheesecake and the Vanilla Birthday cake which you can use for fairy cakes or a big cake. I made fairy cakes.
The recipes are sooo easy to follow. I was a little confused with the cheesecake one tho', it says to leave the cheesecake to cool down for an hour in the oven, holding the door open with a wooden spoon, which I did, and then put it into the fridge for 12 hours.
I was always always told by my mum not to put food that's still warm in the fridge but I did it anyway with this Cheesecake because it didn't say otherwise, and it's turned out really well.
When I decided to make these things, I quickly checked up on my ingredients and went off and bought what I thought would surely be enough, based on British recipes you see, I honestly didn't think there would be that much diffence between the UK & US measurements. Turned out my estimate for the cream cheese was waaaaay off, I bought 3 200g tubs and in the end needed nearly 1kg and as for the icing on the fairy cakes,......HOW much?!!!,....I had a little bit left in the cupboard and thought I'd buy a 1kg bag of Icing sugar so I would have some left for future cakes.
After sitting down and working out how much 8 cups were, after I'd bought the sugar,......It worked out to be 1.8kg of Icing sugar!!!!!! I had to improvise and half the quantities and I'm glad I did. I made 23 fairy cakes and the halved icing (900g Icing Sugar, 110g Butter, 1/2 cup of milk, tspn Vanilla Essence)made enough to cover them twice over. Looking at the cakes now, it's at least 50/50 cake/Icing. Can you imagine what they'd have been like had I made the full amount?!
Overall, the books are fabulous, the recipes are so easy to follow and they are divine. The cakes taste lovely, properly American if you get me?
I would recommend them to anyone but personally I'll be keeping these recipes as special occassion jobbies!
Oh, and one other thing, get yourself a set of US measuring cups. I had to keep Delia's website up on the computer the whole time I was baking so I could convert!.
Sugar,Sugar, Sugar., 09 Apr 2007
I purchased this book fairly recently. The Cake recipes sound just wonderful! I decided to make the Hummingbird Cake which was a 'breeze' I then turned to the Cream Cheese icing, which is described as not too sweet, perfect for the Hummingbird cake. Not too sweet, 5 cups of confectioners sugar (icing sugar) just for one 2 layer 9" Cake? I went ahead and made it anyway, sooo sweet, I was asked if I had poured condensed milk over the cake? Maybe I made a mistake. I followed instructions very carefully.
It may sound as though I'm being overly critical, I hope not.
I will try other recipes from this book, as they are very inviting, in future I will add sugar to the icing/frosting recipes to taste!

A very ordinary collection of average recipes. Contains a few classics but nothing to inspire. I bought Gordon Ramseys pudding book at the same time and it knocks the spots of this.

Not entirely sure about this book - it arrived in the post and it was the pricest cook book I've bought in a long time because it's not discounted. Admittedly I bought it to meet the free delivery amount and reached for a brand (I really wanted to make the big coconut cake on the cover.)

Wonderful!, 28 Aug 2008
This is a beautiful book packed with both clear and concise instructions for creating both familiar and unusual blooms in sugar. The familiar rose, iris, magnolia and orchid all appear in fantastic detail alonside a range of succulents and wonderful plants with names such as akebia, rothmania and tweedia to name only a few! Trust me they might not be instantly recognisable but their colour shape and form make welcome additions to accompany our well loved favourites. Alan Dunn fans will certainly not be disappointed. There is plenty of new material to enjoy and marvel at. Sections on creating wonderful arrangements are a welcome addition to give ideas for displaying all the flowers and foliage. There are of course some wonderful cakes too.
Beginners do not be put off, there are simple flowers to get you started.
Alan's instructions, hints and tips are clear and concise. He is realistic too, on producing the much used rose he states "they often prove to be difficult for both the novice and experienced flower maker to produce consistently." I couldn't agree more and would advise that if you are in the early years of starting out on making sugar flowers never give up or be put off by first attempts. It takes time and patience. It helps if you have a passion because you strive to produce better results each time.
Still, at least it wasn't very much money wasted!
best ice-cream book ever, 29 Mar 2008
I bought this book about a year ago when I first bought my ice-cream machine.
If you dread making custard like me this book is for you. It has very clear instruction and sparks your culinary creativity. I've made countless batches of ice-cream from this book for almost everyone I know and always get loads of compliment. My boyfriend is now addicted to cookie n cream ice-cream and raspberry ice-cream is a big hit among my friends. Highly recommended!

This book should really be called '101 Fruit Dessets' - the majority of receipes use fresh fruit and had I known this, I would not have purchased it!
I'm a big fan of the 101 series as the recipes really do work and the books are a real bargain considering what you get! However, unless you're after a book of fruit desserts, I would say buy 101 Chocolate Treats or 101 Cakes & Bakes both of which have an enormous variety of cakes, biscuits and indulgent desserts to try!
Disappointing., 27 Jul 2006
As someone who always looks forward to receiving Good Food magazine, I have to say that I am very disappointed in this book's content. There are no particularly "new" recipes as it is comprised mainly of dessert recipes which have already appeared in past issues of Good Food. My hopes of "spectacular" endings for dinner party menus which I felt entitled to expect from Good Food have been dashed.
Impress your friends!, 21 Apr 2006
This book is going to be useful for years to come! Ranging from the simple to the more intricate dessert, this book has something for everyone and something for all seasons. The raspberry amaretti cake was polished off in double quick time here: it looked impressive but was really simple to make!

This book is going to be useful for years to come! Ranging from the simple to the more intricate dessert, this book has something for everyone and something for all seasons. The raspberry amaretti cake was polished off in double quick time here: it looked impressive but was really simple to make!
Fantastic Cake Book Which is Right on Target, 12 Aug 2008
This is a fantastic book. I ordered it on a chance that the cake on the cover would be the setting for the entire book and it is. all of the designs are modern, fun and simple, just how cakes should be. These are truly beautiful designs that are easily achieved by a beginner as well as a professional. I make cakes for a living and I can see this book being well thumbed by my customers and well used by me. Lovely fresh designs depicting the style that celebration cakes are taking right now. Highly recommended!
Sweet and Simply Moreish, 23 Jul 2008
In helping to plan my best friend's wedding, I was only to glad to accompany her on cake-tasting missions. After much sampling and mirth, we found the perfect cake at Maisie Fantasie's. Amazingly, May Clee-Cadman invited us into her home for a cake-tasting menu not to be forgotten. While there, I laid eyes on a copy of her book, Sweet and Simple Party Cakes. As a consolation prize to not being the one getting married, May gifted me with a copy of the book. I am now on my third cake making recipe of hers. Her directions are instructive, yet casual and very easy to follow. And while my frosting never turns out as smoothly as hers and my cakes never as even (I must admit I drink while I bake), the taste is remarkably similar to May's actual cakes and just as delicious. I don't see myself being a cake baking competitor any time soon, but I will forever be a fan of Maisie Fantasie and any book May Clee-Cadman writes.
Absolutely perfect!, 09 Jul 2008
I've just received my copy of this book today and I am really pleased to say that it is exactly what I was hoping for, and more! It is not only beautifully presented, but the designs are just stunning as well as the steps being really easy to follow. I can't wait to get baking!
Wonderful Cakes! Wonderful Book!, 24 Jun 2008
Having already experienced May Clee Cadman's fabulous cakes I was of course drawn to her book which is as beautiful as her cakes. The instructions are clearly presented and I've already made one of her simpler cakes and the result was not baaad! All my friends were sooooo impressed. Thank you to May for sharing her skills with us.
A lovely book, 23 Jun 2008
My husband just bought me this book and it's delightful. The pictures are beautiful and I think the designs are fresh, new and elegant. I particularly like the clear and simple instructions. Perfect for budding cake makers everywhere!

Still, at least it wasn't very much money wasted!
best ice-cream book ever, 29 Mar 2008
I bought this book about a year ago when I first bought my ice-cream machine.
If you dread making custard like me this book is for you. It has very clear instruction and sparks your culinary creativity. I've made countless batches of ice-cream from this book for almost everyone I know and always get loads of compliment. My boyfriend is now addicted to cookie n cream ice-cream and raspberry ice-cream is a big hit among my friends. Highly recommended!
Ordinary and lacking in inspiration, 11 Oct 2008
A very ordinary collection of average recipes. Contains a few classics but nothing to inspire. I bought Gordon Ramseys pudding book at the same time and it knocks the spots of this.

this is one of the best and as usual delia keeps it simple
Do look at Alan's other books they are the best at giving an all round approach to making and displaying sugar flowers and foliage.
Alan fans, this book should not be missing from your collection.
I loved it just as much as all his other titles. He has taught me so much through his books and my cakes wouldn't be the same without him!
