One of the funniest books for kids, 29 Oct 2008
This is my favourite childrens book. It is very funny. The only downside of it that I laugh every time I read it out loud to my 5 year old who then demands that I explain exactly what is funny and why which kills it a bit!
Brown rat finds Love, 09 Aug 2003
"That Pesky Rat" is simply one of the funniest children's books I have read in ages - the story of a brown rat who lives in a bin but longs to be a pet with a name. The cameo appearances of his friends who have made it as pets (such as Pierre the Chinchilla who lives a glamourous life with Madame Fifi) are hysterical, and the finale of the book is a happy ending with a very funny twist! This is one book I won't mind reading to my children dozens of times - the illustrations are stylish and adults can enjoy the humour as much as (or even more than)the kids can!
Another fantastic book full of funny pictures and wit, 09 Jun 2002
Thoroughly enjoyable, this book can work at many levels- a good laugh, a thought for all the pets out there, and a chance to reflect on the choices we can all make. Then there's the wonderful montages and drawings that make the book a pleasure for the eyes, one of my favourites being where the rat is thinking about how he hates to be bored... I bought this as a supply teacher- it could form the basis of so many lessons and for so many age levels, and so many parts of the curriculum, but mainly for myself! The main plot is a pesky rat who would like his own name, and to be someone's pet above all, even if it means having to wear a funny jumper. This is well worth paying hard back price for!

wonderfully entertaining, 25 Jan 2002
I bought this tape for my son who was 3 months old at the time, at 8 months he still listens to it every night and is instantly calmed by the lively music and entertaining noises that accompany the story, read by Ray Brooks in a voice that would calm anyone. The book is also colourful, he loves to look at the bright pictures and is now attempting to follow along with the noises. Im so impressed I'm going to get the other tape too!!!
Funloving Elmer and Cousin Wilbur in McKee magic!, 07 Feb 2001
Once again David McKee has created a magical story that will delight children of all ages for years to come. As Elmer the patchwork elephant, his voice throwing cousin Wilbur and the birds shelter from a wind storm, the two elephants decide to liven things up with a bit of prank playing. In this new interpretation of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, the tables are turned when Elmer is whisked into the air and the birds think it is another joke. Mckee's dreamlike artistry , especially his offbeat use of colour, make this story as watchable as it is listenable. You will be blown away by it !

A great read, 30 May 2007
We got this book from the library & my 2 year old son loves it so much i've had to buy it! Its a great flowing story, full of interesting animals and with colourful illustrations.
A good buy for any parent wanting to get / keep their children interested in books
My favourite!, 22 Jan 2005
This is my favourite of all my children's "sing a long story" style books - and they (4 and 6) love it too. My elder daughter has loved it since someone bought it for her aged 2. Lovely rhymes, funny story, great illustrations - and just enough humour to keep adults and growing children enjoying the fun. I would buy it for all my friends' and family's children....
Wonderful pictures and rhymes to stimulate the imagination, 13 Sep 2001
A delight! Both I and my little boy (2 and a half) loved this book. We follow the story every time with a real sense of excitement and anticipation. Wonderful illustrations and rhymes and a really warm and funny story. We loved the main character (especially her name - Miss Lollipop!) and all the animals who joined her on her adventure (especially the tiger with 'his tiger grin'!). Go on - 'jump in' and join Miss Lollipop and her friends for the journey of a lifetime - you'll be grinning like the tiger! I rushed to get the sequel (All Change) which is just as good and better.
Great fun & a book that encourages your childs participation, 20 Apr 2000
An excellently written and beautifully illustrated book in which 'Miss Lollipop' drives her truck around the world while various animals 'Jump In' and the truck gets fuller and fuller until the tiger arrives! My 2 year old adores this book and is eager to call out which animal is jumping in as we go through the story.

Product Description
Percy, the park keeper, always feeds the animals in the park where he lives. But on a very cold winter night his animal friends require more of him than just food. One by one they appear, shivering on his doorstep, asking for shelter. Soon there is no room in the bed for Percy. This, the first Percy story, introduces us to an endearing and endurable character whose relationship to his animal friends is like that of a tolerant parent to mischievous children. The expressive colour illustrations perfectly complement the humorous and easy-to-read text to create the perfect book to share with young children. (Ages 2 to 6)

Love it!, 01 May 2008
It is winter and it is snowing. All through the evening, Percy gets knocks from various different animals and they all want to share the bed. The problem is the bed is too small for them all. How will all of the animals and Percy get through the night? Find out in this book... I really, really, really like Percy the Park Keeper adventures (and have got four of the books) and would definitely and positively rate this book 8/ 10. I would absolutely strongly recommend it to everyone who likes Percy the Parker as well! Nick Butterworth has done a great job with all of the books - so I look forward to read and review other of his books!
One Snowy Night is a brilliant book!, 14 Mar 2008
I like this book because it is cold and all of the animals come to Percy's house.
A truly magical story, 30 Aug 2007
What can I say about this truly wonderful and magical book that has not already been said. It is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated and just the right length for a snuggly bedtime story. My son is now 4 years old and still loves to hear the stories about Percy the Park Keeper. We even purchased the DVD (which is truly wonderful too).
I personally love to read this story and have even been known to suggest it to my son for bedtime reading. If you don't already own this book, then don't hesitate to buy it today, you will not regret it.
One Snowy Night (Nick Butterworth), 27 May 2007
It's so fantatic to be a 39 year old toddler! This and the others in the series are simply beautifully written with unforgettable illustrations.Even if you don't have children, buy this; you will never regret it.
Rivetting to read as well as listen to., 02 Feb 2007
Lovely book to read and, for my 3 year old son, listen to. Lots of actions (knocking on doors, snuggling under blankets, budging up etc), bit of a frightener (not too much) with the noise under the shed and a spot of 'who is where?'. Even explains how the fox is allowed in with the other animals.
I'll be looking to get more in the series but we're still into this one.

Up We Go, Down We Go, 10 Apr 2007
Her people are getting ready for Christmas, and Mog is less than impressed with the disruption to her routine. So when a tree starts walking around and shouting at her, she decides the roof is the best place to be. From up there she can't see how upset her people are that she isn't there to share Christmas with them. But wait a minute...... As ever, this seasonal Mog installment is a delight for both kids and grown-ups - a straightforward but funny and charming little story where it all comes out right in the end. What more could you ask for?
Judith Kerr knows cats - she just must!, 07 Dec 2001
Mog is such a typical cat and his Christmas is just like his life a muddle of forgetfulness, the mysteries of human behaviour and very 'catty' adventures - he is lovable, just like the book. A wonderful read for young children who love thier own moggy.

My son is now 14 and this was one of his favorites, This excellent book with its fab pictures of Sid who is a brilliant charater, was read over and over and we all loved it so much !! In fact we have given it to the youngest member of our extended family now, and guess what... we want it back !!!
Happy memories, and that is what a good book is all about. well done Inga Moore ! Tiny, 14 Aug 2003
Beware! The hardback version of this book being sold by Amazon is a miniature and it is tiny! This is not clear at all from the web page, not the first time I have experienced this problem. An absorbing and witty story with beautiful illustrations., 31 Dec 2000
This cleverly written story operates on two levels: 1) an engaging story with realistic illustrations to keep my 18 month old son captivated and 2) words and pictures that allow me to vary my interpretation slightly with each reading (essential as I often end up reading it 6 times a day). For these reasons we both love it. A brilliant book!
A purr-fectly great read, 03 Aug 2000
I'm not really the kind of person who smiles as they read, but this clever and beautifully-illustrated had me laughing out loud. It's a great read for cat lovers and non-cat lovers alike, whether children or adults, and I was able to identify Six Dinner Sid with at least one real cat I know. I found that it really captures the essence of domestic cats: independent, manipulative, but just too cute to resist feeding and cuddling!
Read it again mummy! - best recommendation there is!, 28 Nov 1998
Simply the sweetest, funiest little tale we have read in ages. As I read it out loud the first time is was as much for my own pleasure as the children's. The book with it's delightful illustrations of Sid's many comic facial expressions remains a firm favourite with the children and adults alike several years on. The nice little twist at the end has the right blend of cheekiness and morality to appeal to us all. Very clever use of street names where Sid lived, it will be many years before the children appreciate them but it made the adults smile. You should definitely get a copy for yourself and anyone else with a young family and a sense of humour.

A good buy for any parent wanting to get / keep their children interested in books My favourite!, 22 Jan 2005
All Time Favorite !, 23 Sep 2008
My son is now 14 and this was one of his favorites, This excellent book with its fab pictures of Sid who is a brilliant charater, was read over and over and we all loved it so much !! In fact we have given it to the youngest member of our extended family now, and guess what... we want it back !!!

Love That Book, 23 Sep 2008
Love that Dog is one great inspiration for boy readers to get down and read poetry. It worked for me, and my class of 10-year-old boys. We Loved that Book, and practically every boy has a dog story to tell. Challenges assumptions about literature, poetry, and boys. It does what it says on the cover, you really do 'Love that Dog'. I cried.
amazing book, 08 Sep 2008
Saw this book in the local library. The title grabbed me as I thought my young daughter might like it (she's mad about dogs). Read it in a few minutes, found myself laughing and crying then rushing out to buy copies for friends and family. This book is a hidden jewel!
freshness and innocence, 08 Jun 2008
It's a book full of wonder that takes only 10 minutes to read but you read and re-read it for the humour, the pathos and to re-enter that child's mind of discovery. It's a book for children of all ages and it's written in the form of a diary of a young boy being introduced to poetry.
Initially, he is reticent about writing - "I don't want to because boys don't write poetry" - but he overcomes this and then the book opens up into an explanation of meaning and words and language.
Through humour, joy, heartache, we are caught in the child's world that so closely resembles our own world of definition.
The book opens with the diary entry and comments about William Carlos Williams' "The Red Wheelbarrow". The story continues with the young boy's development into the poetry world and how this grows into a love of words after the death of his beloved dog.
'Love That Dog' makes us laugh and cry and question our own development as writers, as we wish we could capture that freshness and innocence again.
Sharon Creech has skilfully entered a child's mind while avoiding cliches and patronisation.
Be Prepared to buy Multiple Copies, 22 Nov 2007
I am now on my fourth copy of this book, because whenever I lend it to someone, it never comes back. This is a slender volume which can be read in one sitting, but which will stay with you for the rest of your life.
It is told in the form of short poems or verses on every page from the point of view of a child in school. The child is struggling to learn about what makes poetry poetic, and why poetry is important. Those difficulties are played out in poetic form on the page.
The other theme of the book is the child's relationship with its dog, the most important thing in its life. The child wrestles with poetry to try and express the often inexpressible feelings it has about the dog and what it means to have a relationship with it.
The book is hauntingly sad, fantastically beautiful and never fails to touch those who read it. I gave this book to my mother who teaches literature to the under twelves, and who often find it difficult to engage with poetry. She has now worn out two copies of the book and says it is the most powerfully affecting book she has ever used to teach with. Children love it, adults love it, you will love it. You must buy it.
Don't judge this book by its cover!, 16 Jul 2004
My mum bought this for me at a book sale and when I saw it all I could think of was 'great! I'm a teenager! I don't want to read baby stuff!' The next day there was a powercut so I picked it up and in five mins I had finished it. My mum came ito the room and asked if I was o.k because tears were streaming down my face. I answered " yes i'm fine. I just have to reread it to see if i was in a dream or really reading this book ". I urge evereybody to buy this book and live this heartwarming story of a boy learning poetry and growing to love it. A must read!

The story brings a smile to my soul and the sumptuous illustrations fill me with glee. Totally agree with all these other reviews. Love this book and savour reading it aloud to the kids... over and over.
One of our favourites, 09 Nov 2007
This is a delightfully whimsical book, and beautifully observed. It has a rare and wonderful quality: it shows compassion for all, including the "baddie"--a greedy, selfish king. The story never condemns him; it simply describes his life, and shows how he is eventually made miserable by his own behaviour. And when he is finally redeemed, it is without any smugness, just with rejoicing that all is finally well. As well as being great fun, this is one of the most gentle and joyful children's books I know.
My four- and six-year old love this book, and it has had many, many rereadings in our house. The illustrations are full of charming, funny details; the Italian-speaking cat has us all wandering around the house saying "non c'e di che" ("don't mention it"): and I particularly like the Wind who, after creating mild havoc with a tempest, says "You do these things in a moment of madness, and then you're left with the mess."
I've probably bought 300-400 children's books in the past few years, and this is definitely one of the best.
Wonderful and beautifully illustrated, 01 Jun 2006
I bought this book for my 5-year old daughter because I am a great fan of Jeanette Winterson's writing.
The King of Capri was everything I hoped it would be. We have read it many times, and the timeless reversal of fortune tale, told cleverly with gentle humour, never ceases to put a smile on our faces at bedtime. Beautifully illustrated too - what a bonus. We especially like the Italian-speaking cat(!) and the sweetly happy ending.
One of our favourites.
A beautiful children's book, 13 Sep 2003
I bought this beautifully written children's book for my niece, who enjoyed it very much. It holds all of the poetic charm Winterson displays in her writing for adults, within a beautiful moral story. With it's gorgeous graphics and strong hardback it makes a perfect present for a child who is just learning about the joys of reading.

Product Description
The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight The ghastly Grinch refuses to be moved by the Christmas spirit in this lovely hardback version of Dr Seuss's classic tale. When he spies the citizens of Who-ville enjoying their Christmas preparations, the Grinch comes down from his cave and makes a dastardly attempt to take all the joy out of the occasion by actually stealing Christmas. With zany rhymes and distinctive black and red illustrations, this classic seasonal story has become a favourite for good reason. In the end, the story of the ghastly Grinch has something to teach us all about the true meaning of Christmas. --Rachel Ediss The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head just wasn't screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were just too tight. But I think the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes two small. The classic Dr Seuss story of the grumpy Grinch who wants to steal Christmas from the happy people of Whoville is brought thoroughly up to date in this book and tape pack. Dr Seuss's classic story, filled with irreverent wit and acerbic illustration has lost none of its charm, and the tape, which features the story read by an exuberant Rik Mayall, makes an excellent read-along-companion or can be enjoyed on its own. Never has Dr Seuss been more fun. (Age 4 and over) -- Susan Harrison
