a worthy compendium, 22 Sep 2008
most of these shows were previously released on beeb disks. some may have had an additional tweak or two, but nothing obvious. "dishonoured" is new to me as is "forog". the latter suffers from very poor quality sources, which is unfortunate. the latter is a great recording of a very funny performance. it was re-recorded as "dishonoured - again" & released by emi but this performance is arguably better - the recording is definitely better.

Exellent Introduction to the Goons, 02 Mar 2008
If you know about the Goons then you probably like them. They were the inspiration for Monty Python. The Goonshow was on the radio nearly every week for ten years, so the question is: where to start? My answer is this album. Everyone has their own opinion as to the best episodes, but if you don't like Napoleon's Piano then there's no hope for you! It really is a gem, together with International Christmas Pudding. Here they are on one album. Start here.
This is the BBC, 01 Jan 2006
Ah once again Jim's its 2 hours of continuous radio fighting! In both corners The Goons! Yes its that all leather goon show, and its back for more! Featuring the birth of the Dreaded Lurgi! Neeeeiugh! The International Christmas Pudding! The Flea and Napoleons Piano! Never has such madness been alowed out of a secure room! Use this wonderful CD to torture your sisters! Cause Pain to your Uncles and generally annoy people whilst you laugh your head off at this superb CD! Each Goon Show has been digitally remastered! What more could you want?! Well.......a portion of batter pudding....
The One with the Lurgi........, 11 Aug 2002
Wondered where lurgi came from? Buy this and find out. Highly recommended - very funny.
Wonderful quality sound., 03 Feb 2002
I've just become a big fan of the Goon Show, and being able to buy these episodes for such a low price was great. I enjoy being able to listen again and again to these episodes, and encourage the BBC to release more of the 250 or so episodes on tape and CD.

Bravo!, 03 Nov 2006
Now, this is a truly wonderful production. From the moment you pop the CD into your player you can tell that this edition of Winnie the Pooh was lovingly made by people who greatly admire England's favourite bear.
Stephen Fry is spot-on as Pooh, Jane Horrocks manages to make Piglet both loveable and adorably selfish, Judy Dench is a perfect Kanga and Geoffrey Palmer is a wonderful Eeyore. In fact, the entire cast does a great job. The adaptation is very true to the original, playful and sincere. The music is lovely and captures the spirit of the books admirably.
This edition of my favourite books inspired a childish joy in me. It's a work of art, beautifully crafted, as are the other three CDs in the same series. If you are Interested in Bears at All, this CD isn't to be missed.

new slant to familiar places, 02 Mar 2006
I was not a fan of Winnie the Pooh. I found it hard to disassociate it from the horrible Disneyfication, but when a long car journey loomed, this was the only CD available and ploughing through fog and heavy rain, it amused not only the children, but me as well. Alan Bennett is great and repeated listens are not as irritating as expected. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

More Goon Show please!, 05 Feb 2002
Another delightful collection of Goon Show "talking-type wireless" episodes. Two of the four in this collection stand out. "Shangri-la Again" is a take-off on 'Lost Horizon' (or as the Goons put it, "Lost Horizontally"). My favorite is the ghostly tale of "The Spectre of Tintagel", featuring King Arthur Seagoon (his parents were illiterate, but they did have a round table). Great fun and I recommend this to fans everywhere.

This is, without doubt, one of the true classics. Completely hilarious. I introduced my pre teen stepchildren to it on car journeys, it was not long before the elder two were word perfect. One of the best cures for "are we nearly there yet??" that I have ever found.

Three Of The Best Goonshows Ever Are On This Collection. The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler,The Jet Propelled Guided NAAFI And The Truely Side Splitting The Histories Of Pliny The Elder.
If you Only Ever Buy One Collection BUY THIS ONE!!!!
I Originaly Bought This On Cassette 10 Or So Years Ago,It Still Has Me Helpless With Laughter.12 Out Of 10 Two of the best episodes of the Goon Show ever made on here, 13 Jan 2004
On this double CD, you will get 4 complete and unabridged episodes of the Goon Show. Each show is neatly divided up into seperate tracks that play seemlessly, but are really handy if you can't face listening to Max Geldray's screeching harmonica again!! In my humble opinion, this particular volume is THE one to have. Not only does it contain the brilliant 'Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-On-Sea', but also my own personal favourite episode of all time, the amazing 'Jet Propelled Guided NAAFI'. As usual, these volumes contain one or two good shows, and one or two distinctly average shows. This volume is no exception, bar the fact that the two good episodes on here are infact 'great' episodes! For any newcomer to the humour of Spike Milligan and the Goons, this is a great place to start. Despite some dated jokes and references to 'current' politicians and situations, the vast majority of the comedy contained in these shows is still amazingly fresh and accessible to just about anyone with a sense of humour. But it is not just Spike Milligan's surreal comic genius that makes these shows worth a listen (and buying), but also the performances that Sellers, Secombe and Milligan deliver. Constantly full of energy and fun, not to mention more than their fair share of vocal talent (esp. Peter Sellers), it is impossible not to just sit back and be entertained by The Goons. And here in the 'reality TV generation' of mundane shows that barely pass for entertainment, how ironic that a comedy show from the 1950's be like a breath of fresh air...
great book!, 05 May 2001
this book is altogether great and makes you laugh a great deal so if you are down in the dumps then this is the book for you!it is also good value for money

Two of the best episodes of the Goon Show ever made on here, 13 Jan 2004
And here in the 'reality TV generation' of mundane shows that barely pass for entertainment, how ironic that a comedy show from the 1950's be like a breath of fresh air...

a worthy compendium, 22 Sep 2008
most of these shows were previously released on beeb disks. some may have had an additional tweak or two, but nothing obvious.

The Goons at their very best, 18 May 2008
I was given this CD for my 13th birthday by my dad who had always been a Goons fan since he was young. At first I wasn't that sure about the Goons because it was a radio comedy and it was first aired in the 50's. However, these views were quickly dismissed after listening to the first story the great string robbery. The combined talents of Spike Milligan, Peter Sallas and Harry Schombe are simply umatchable and extremely funny. I couldn't believe that these stories had been written in the 50s as the plots are insane and crazy and are so far ahead of their time that I don't think we have caught up yet. This CD has the stories The Great String Robbery, The white Nedie Trade, The Spon plauge and the Mountain Eaters each runs for about 30 mins and each has 2 music intervals like most 50s radio shows. The string Robbery and The Spon Plauge are the best on the CD with plots like the middle bit of a piece of string being stolen and a disease whose symptoms are bare knees. This CD is an excellent starting point to get into the Goons, which it did for me and I have become a die hard fan because of this CD. I cannot recommend this excellent radio comedy enougth.
The Goons are at the height of their powers, 05 Jan 2002
The Goons are at the height of their powers in these episodes, one of which, "The White Neddie Trade" is noteable for not having been written by Milligan. The only thing preventing this disc from achieving perfection is the possibility that the lads are, at times, having even more fun than the listeners.

And Now It's Time For The Highly Esteemed Goon Show!, 30 Dec 2002
The Goon Show was revolutionary in its day and laid the foundations for comedy greats like Monty Python to aspire to. And even 50 years on its still very, very funny. Spike Milligan's scripts are surrealism taken to the extreme and the adventures of Neddy Seagoon, Bluebottle and the rest have always had me in fits of laughter. This collection is no different and all 4 episodes are of high quality, continuing the trend set by the previous BBC releases. The only irritation I find about this audiobook are the musical interludes during the shows which I find terribly boring. Surely this time could have been used to fit in more gags! But this is a minor niggle and some of the songs are mildly catchy so this still gets five stars. Go on, let go of reality for half an hour and laugh yourself silly.

And here in the 'reality TV generation' of mundane shows that barely pass for entertainment, how ironic that a comedy show from the 1950's be like a breath of fresh air...

Laugh til you cry, 20 Mar 2007
This is, without doubt, one of the true classics. Completely hilarious. I introduced my pre teen stepchildren to it on car journeys, it was not long before the elder two were word perfect. One of the best cures for "are we nearly there yet??" that I have ever found.

Two of the best episodes of the Goon Show ever made on here, 13 Jan 2004
Don't wait until 25 Dec to listen!, 28 Aug 2002
Guaranteed to tickle the funny bone all-year round. I love it! The only "dated" bit of any of these is the musical interludes, but even some of them are darn good! Recommended.
British Comedy at it's best, 28 Oct 2000
This, along with all the Goons' other works, is wonderful listening. Their crazy brand of humor hasn't dated at all, and the total lack of Political correctness is refreshing. This is British Comedy at it's best. Wonderful!.
