A Universal Study Guide, 27 May 2008
One thing that really strikes me about this book is that it is useful and applicable wherever you are in your life, or education. It teaches principles that are useful to anyone that needs to remember anything - and makes them easily understandable. If you've wanted to know why it is that you can remember some, useless, things easily, but when it comes to dates of major battles (etc.) you're at a loss, then this book can help. It can also teach you how to turn those dates, facts, quotations or just about anything into things that stick in your memory. And the way it does it is not simply by showing a set of techniques (although the techniques such as "Mind Maps" some claim to have really helped their learning), but by giving you some guiding principles to show you how your mind selects and restores information. I haven't tried to put into place the technique of speed reading that occurs in the book - for my purposes reading slowly and carefully is useful. However, I think the book was worth it, even if just for the 'supercharge your memory' chapter alone.
Great introduction to Mind Mapping, Speed Reading, and Memory Improvement, 23 Dec 2007
This amazingly lucid and accessible little book provides the reader with several very useful, interrelated techniques--Mind Mapping, Speed Reading, and Memory Techniques--aimed at aiding the student to get better grades on exams, essays, and projects. The former technique (Mind Mapping), in my opinion, is covered in sufficient depth and is probably the most interesting and novel of the three; on the other hand, the latter two are touched upon relatively superficially--especially the section on Speed Reading is very meager. In short, this book is extremely helpful, being a manual introducing a number of simple techniques that allow one to study more effectively and efficiently; do no expect, however, an extensive academic work covering studying techniques in great detail and in a scientific fashion. Finally, although it is not mentioned in the book, it should be noted that Mind-Mapping software is available, eliminating the need to make them on paper.
Highly recommended for students who have already started their course of study., 12 May 2007
The way this book is written makes it very accessible and an easy read, without losing the depth of what Mr Buzan is trying to say. There are many study books on the market. I have not read a lot of them but the ones I have seen can often be overwhelming. This one is a perfect size to provide the information required and doesn't keep you hanging on and prevent you from getting on with putting your new skills into practice. I certainly found it very useful indeed.

a must read for anyone engaged with academic literature, 03 Jul 2007
I have been teaching literature review techniques to masters and PhD students for several years and I wholeheartedly endorse this book. Wallace and Wray have produced a clear, comprehensible and structured approach to critical reading and writing. The book provides a number of useful exercises and the worked examples are excellent. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students, researchers and educators in any social science discipline.
Highly recommended, 13 Sep 2006
If you are new in the field of academia and are feeling a bit lost where, critical reading and writing is concerned, then this is the book for you! It is carefully thought out, easy to follow and provides excellent examples within each section. I particularly found the section on writing a literature review useful as this area is always a bit of a minefield. This book is suitable for Post-Grads at all levels and even the more experienced student/academic may learn a few new skills.

If you have a fascination for the Tarot then this book is a must for your bookshelf! As a beginner I have read through it once but know that I will both re-read it and use it for reference in the future. The content is aimed more at the serious student but as with many Tarot books does not alienate the beginner like myself and does increase interest in the subject. A well deserved 5 stars! Useful- but maybe not for the tarot novice, 06 Aug 2008
I am a tarot beginner and bought this book because it sounded as if it would offer simple and practical advice that is easy to understand. And it did to some extend; I liked the author's emphasis on trusting your own intuition and involving the querent in the reading rather than ridgidly following textbook interpretations and meanings.
However, this book is not really a teaching guide, it's basically a collection from a website where people (often experienced tarot readers) asked questions and the author gave an answer. Some of these questions were too advanced for me and were referring to subjects I had no knowledge of. Therefore the answers were not always useful too me and at times too technical and not extensive enough to make sense to me as a beginner.
If you are a novice like me and want to learn a use tarot, I would advice to buy a book that is specifically aimed at the beginner, you will probably get more out of it.
I will still keep this book and hopefully as I get a better understanding of the tarot, some sections of this book will become more useful to me. Quick & Easy Tips - a "must have" for your Tarot Collection!, 17 Feb 2004
I bought this book and just couldn't put it down. It has so many quick and easy tips and is massively practical. The writers' style is warm, welcoming, easy and personal. You actually feel as if you are sitting in their class or at the end of a phone talking to them. The information is accessible and easy to understand and apply. The fact that the book is divided up into different sections including Decks; Interpretation & Meaning; Reading Techniques; Spreads; Other Things You Can Do With Tarot and Ethics makes it incredibly easy to get great value from it quickly. Even as a fairly experienced reader I picked up so many really useful tips. I would recommend this book to all Tarot enthusiasts. (The Tarot School story was a fascinating Appendix.)

Beware USA format book, 15 Aug 2007
Bought this book and did not realise it is produced in the USA and not really compatible to UK and particulary DFES recommended phonic programmes.
Absolutely a must if you teach kindergarten and first grade., 06 Jun 1999
This book provides direct, sequential steps of a lesson plan for teaching phonemic awareness and word patterns, not only for emergent readers, but for those children in need of building word awareness and language skills. I use it constantly in a multi-age classroom of 5,6, and 7 year olds. It is a terrific book to use that works well with a variey of levels. If you have the book or use the book MAKING WORDS by Patricia Cunningham, you will definitely want to get this one.
Practical, easy-to-implement lessons in word study., 13 Dec 1998
Judy Lynch has provided teachers with easy, useful lessons for teaching word study to emergent readers and writers. The format is easy to follow and the lessons utilize high frequency rimes and onsets. It is the perfect complement to Patricia Cunningham's book, Making Words. Lynch's book can be used with students the first week of school. The compelling, must-have aspect of this book is the blackline masters for the word study mats at the back of the book, the large and small reproducible letters for individual word study sets and the 31 pages of nursery rhymes which reinforce use of the rimes studied in the word study lessons. Appendix A gives simple but superb suggestions for implementing the nursery rhymes. This is a must-have for any teacher involved in a Balanced Literacy classroom! Thanks, Judy.

A much needed text, 16 Apr 2002
Patrick Crookes and Sue Davies have drawn together a doctor and 13 nurses, predominantly from the University of Sheffield, to produce this reasonably priced and easy to read text. This publication marks a significant move away from the traditional format of research books. The central theme of this work is to place an emphasis on developing the skills and knowledge necessary to understand and apply existing research literature and not on the skills necessary to carry out original research. The authors are undoubtedly successful in meeting this aspiration. A brief review of the 12 chapters highlights this change in direction with such headings as 'Evaluating methods for analyzing data in published research' and 'Critiquing ethical issues in published research.' Despite the nature of the authorship, the book claims to be intended for all areas of professional health care. I do, however, have reservations about the relevance of this text to other professions. This claim would have been enhanced if any of the contributors had emanated from alternative professions. For the nursing profession, however, this text will be of considerable value. As stressed in the text's introduction, it is impractical for all nurses to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to undertake worthwhile research. All nurses, however, need to possess the skills to critically evaluate research reports and apply the findings to practice with the aim of further enhancing practice. This book will be of great value to nurses in the target group but also to nurses undertaking research.
A clear and comprehensive introduction to research, 07 Jan 2001
An excellent text for those 'new' to research. Very clearly written and logically structured. Of use to all undergraduate health care students. A 'must buy' for all students and those wanting to gain an understanding of the research process and critique.

Absolutely fabulous, 16 Mar 2008
Excellent resource that builds comprehension, talking and listening skills and thinking skills and does it in a fun and challenging manner! Perfect for children working towards level C or above in the Scottish 5-14 guidelines. Excellent and Different., 11 Aug 2008
A 'must buy' for all students and those wanting to gain an understanding of the research process and critique.
practicemultiple-choice papers suitable for key skills level 1 Adult literacy, 31 Jul 2008
An excellent book which has saved me and my colleagues much time trying to write End Assessment papers for Key Skills Level 1. It's prepared my students for the tests and the success rate has been excellent. I intend to buy the Level 2 and the ICT Levels 1 and 2.

One of the Bibles of Second Language Reading, 29 Nov 2006
During my literature review done as exploratory research for my employer, I kept coming back to this teachers' manual on second language reading for my own reference purposes. It was the most thorough volume we had obtained in terms of both the theoretical and pedagogic perspectives, even though it is not a research-oriented book. It was constructed in the mode of a very experienced teacher giving advice and help to students of L2 reading pedagogy. Although based primarily on Nuttall's own teaching experience (which is extensive), it is a very complete, thorough primer and teachers' guide for the field of second language reading. It contains the best chapter in the English language on extensive reading (for teachers, that is). Her advice is sage-like and right-on. It does not contain a lot of research findings, but its advice reads like a summary of L2 reading research. Somehow, without referring to findings, she puts them all together in incredible nuggatts of useful information. This book is also among the most-quoted of all nonresearch volumes on L2 reading.
I put it in the same class as another bible on reading, Florence Davies' Introductory Reading. However, Davies' book concerns text and discourse issues of L2 reading much more than does this one of Nuttall's. These two books taken together should become the background and reference encyclopedias for anyone learning or reviewing the subject matter of L2 reading. They will 'put it all together'for the student teacher. They will not lead them astray. They are the classics of the field.
Must for CELTA students, 06 May 2004
This book was invaluable during the first half of my CELTA course, in particular when I had to select a reading text for my assignment. It is a little heavy in parts, but has some excellent ideas and the explanations are all related to what you need to know about using different texts at the two required levels for the course. It will serve as a great reference book once qualified;a kind of security blanket to keep you on your toes! One to be seriously considered!!
