a must read for anyone engaged with academic literature, 03 Jul 2007
I have been teaching literature review techniques to masters and PhD students for several years and I wholeheartedly endorse this book. Wallace and Wray have produced a clear, comprehensible and structured approach to critical reading and writing. The book provides a number of useful exercises and the worked examples are excellent. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students, researchers and educators in any social science discipline.
Highly recommended, 13 Sep 2006
If you are new in the field of academia and are feeling a bit lost where, critical reading and writing is concerned, then this is the book for you! It is carefully thought out, easy to follow and provides excellent examples within each section. I particularly found the section on writing a literature review useful as this area is always a bit of a minefield. This book is suitable for Post-Grads at all levels and even the more experienced student/academic may learn a few new skills.

good book, good delivery, 03 Feb 2004
arrived speedily in great condition and at great price. No complaints. I'd buy from them again in good faith.
Excellent advice - not just for journalists, 18 Sep 2001
More people than journalists need to write concisely and clearly. Hicks shows how to organise material, thoughts and logic into the production of text that people will want to read. At the same time, this book is a jolly good read, and I did so at one sitting. The examples that illustrate his points are well chosen. Wish I had been able to read this at school. Delightful to read a "how to..." book that in no way talks down to its readers. Also very clear from the first page what the writer will not cover. If in doubt, buy it. Having bought, use it. An excellent companion volume to Chris Browne's Journalist's Handbook - no overlap whatsoever.

Its invaluable, 25 Nov 2006
I wish this book had been written when I was a student. It provides comprehensive coverage of how to write correctly about education. The format is easy to follow. It is understandable and without waffle. The book is practical and uses examples well to illustrate points. I recommended it to our students as being invaluable. Indeed, I find it very helpful both to refresh my knowledge and fill in any gaps. Don't hesitate - the sooner you buy it the sooner you will benefit !

Excellent, 03 Oct 2008
This is an excellent book, for once a book that helps students write and research that is not full of jargon and overly complicated.
I teach professional qaulifications at several levels up to masters level and my students at all levels have found this book most useful. It is a very good all rounder, especially for those who are new to study or coming back after many years away.
If you are writing a disertation you will still need the more detailed research books but this is great to get your started and take the fear away.

a bit too basic, 17 Nov 2008
I was dissapointed with this book. From the outset I got the feeling it was written for those who wanted to write very basic stuff, magazine stories etc. (It turned out the author was in fact mainly into writing for women's magazines.) It was almost 'telling' you what to write, most of which was a cliche. For instance, the author stated that no-one wanted to read about the love life of a mechanic and secretary unless he was designing formula one cars and she worked for a high-powered executive; try telling that to the millions of people who watch Eastenders every day! The advice about writing romantic fiction states that the ending msut also be upbeat. I don't recall Romeo and Juliet having an upbeat ending the last time I looked, or Wuthering Heights! Overall, it doesn't really offer much advice to those wanting to fine-tune their writing. I think it would only be of use to those who are very new to writing. Those wanting to develop thier skills would need something more challenging.
A writer's essential tool!, 09 Aug 2005
This was so useful, very straight forward, easy to use and full of encouraging tips. I'd recommend anyone who is doing creative writing to buy this.

This book is a really useful reference and provides a great starting point for any piece of eye catching snappy writing that you want to produce. Simple and effective. boredom in a book, 22 Nov 2002
The author John Foster is on one BIG ego trip and I am sure very clever. If you need something to send you off at night buy this book! The content is an amalgam of a number of better and often referenced books on more particular and niche subjects. The content spectacularly moves from subject to subject without depth and interest and ironically is incredibly difficult reading. Forcing the reader to stutter over words and phrases in a peculiar manner. Section 6 - is it easy to read? I answer a resounding NO! The trouble with plurals is a entertaining section as it alerts you to pooly written market traders signs. The punctuation bit reminds me a a primary school lesson, yet less memorable. When I bought the book I was interested to learn yet the style is a major turn off and I no doubt use cliches with bad punctuation even today. The most useful bit is the further reading - it points you to the actual book you want to read about the particular subject. I am off to buy an Oxford Dictionary for Writers

A very useful book, 26 Oct 2008
This has probably been superceded by a new 2008 edition; however, as a teacher returning to study after a xx year gap, this has been an invaluable resource. My course has involves an enormous amount of reading, and I kept getting swamped by information, and couldn't see the woods for the trees when it came to writing my essays. I haven't read this book from cover to cover, but when I have been stuck I return to key chapters and dip into other sections - it has been very useful and helped me to kick start my essay writing. It is very accessible and I recommend it to anyone writing essays that require a sustained arguement.

Beware USA format book, 15 Aug 2007
Bought this book and did not realise it is produced in the USA and not really compatible to UK and particulary DFES recommended phonic programmes.
Absolutely a must if you teach kindergarten and first grade., 06 Jun 1999
This book provides direct, sequential steps of a lesson plan for teaching phonemic awareness and word patterns, not only for emergent readers, but for those children in need of building word awareness and language skills. I use it constantly in a multi-age classroom of 5,6, and 7 year olds. It is a terrific book to use that works well with a variey of levels. If you have the book or use the book MAKING WORDS by Patricia Cunningham, you will definitely want to get this one.
Practical, easy-to-implement lessons in word study., 13 Dec 1998
Judy Lynch has provided teachers with easy, useful lessons for teaching word study to emergent readers and writers. The format is easy to follow and the lessons utilize high frequency rimes and onsets. It is the perfect complement to Patricia Cunningham's book, Making Words. Lynch's book can be used with students the first week of school. The compelling, must-have aspect of this book is the blackline masters for the word study mats at the back of the book, the large and small reproducible letters for individual word study sets and the 31 pages of nursery rhymes which reinforce use of the rimes studied in the word study lessons. Appendix A gives simple but superb suggestions for implementing the nursery rhymes. This is a must-have for any teacher involved in a Balanced Literacy classroom! Thanks, Judy.
