possibly the most useful book you will ever read!, 21 May 2008
I have to say i am extremely impressed with this book, unlike other memory books it summarises every essential memory technique into a quick, easy read manual, u may even say it cuts the crap and gets down to it! after doing some of the exercises i was literally like, "WOW"
aside from the advanced domonqiue technique which may take a few hours to complete (still working on it), the main bulk of the book can be read and the tasks completed within around 4 hours, like a previous reviewer said, some of the techniques are just re-itterated to make up numbers so there is 52 techniques to fill the year! but apart from that it is truely an awsome book.
it is insane how such a simple method can improve your memory so much in an instant. for example i learned and still remember the first 15 elements of the periodic table within about 2 minutes, and remembering 20 digit long numbers is a breeze...i am still working on the domonic technique and will be curious to see how large a numbers i can remember, as i was scoring nearly 100% every time with the tasks given.
Domonic O'Brien is a true master when it comes to memory training, and i only wish i had read this book before i went through the torture of college and University exams!
The best memory book and so cheap!, 03 May 2008
I've bought a couple of memory books from various authors including a few from Dominic O'Brien. I agree with the other reviewer this book gives you all the techniques you'll ever need to improve your memory. I also agree that Dominic is the best teacher on memory techniques because he emphasises the importance of location as well as association and imagination. The book is also beautifully designed and would make a wonderful gift. At £4.49 I'll take two!
Summed up in one, 06 Jul 2007
Unlike all the other books by O'brien, this one has every single memory technique of his. It's odd this has received no reviews, clearly being the best book of the lot.
Every other one of O'Brien's books are very clearly the same material used over and over again. In short, memory is very subjective, so it is hard to objectively say if this book will be easy to use, simply that it did for me and and as a student has reduced things like revision massively in ease and time.
In other words, Dominic when he wants to be appears to be the best memory teacher there is, and being his best book, this should be the only one you need. However, I should warn, clearly to make up '52' he has included some truly awful ones (only a few) which he must have known no-one would try when writing (I am particularly thinking about the one about films).

A Universal Study Guide, 27 May 2008
One thing that really strikes me about this book is that it is useful and applicable wherever you are in your life, or education. It teaches principles that are useful to anyone that needs to remember anything - and makes them easily understandable. If you've wanted to know why it is that you can remember some, useless, things easily, but when it comes to dates of major battles (etc.) you're at a loss, then this book can help. It can also teach you how to turn those dates, facts, quotations or just about anything into things that stick in your memory. And the way it does it is not simply by showing a set of techniques (although the techniques such as "Mind Maps" some claim to have really helped their learning), but by giving you some guiding principles to show you how your mind selects and restores information. I haven't tried to put into place the technique of speed reading that occurs in the book - for my purposes reading slowly and carefully is useful. However, I think the book was worth it, even if just for the 'supercharge your memory' chapter alone.
Great introduction to Mind Mapping, Speed Reading, and Memory Improvement, 23 Dec 2007
This amazingly lucid and accessible little book provides the reader with several very useful, interrelated techniques--Mind Mapping, Speed Reading, and Memory Techniques--aimed at aiding the student to get better grades on exams, essays, and projects. The former technique (Mind Mapping), in my opinion, is covered in sufficient depth and is probably the most interesting and novel of the three; on the other hand, the latter two are touched upon relatively superficially--especially the section on Speed Reading is very meager. In short, this book is extremely helpful, being a manual introducing a number of simple techniques that allow one to study more effectively and efficiently; do no expect, however, an extensive academic work covering studying techniques in great detail and in a scientific fashion. Finally, although it is not mentioned in the book, it should be noted that Mind-Mapping software is available, eliminating the need to make them on paper.
Highly recommended for students who have already started their course of study., 12 May 2007
The way this book is written makes it very accessible and an easy read, without losing the depth of what Mr Buzan is trying to say. There are many study books on the market. I have not read a lot of them but the ones I have seen can often be overwhelming. This one is a perfect size to provide the information required and doesn't keep you hanging on and prevent you from getting on with putting your new skills into practice. I certainly found it very useful indeed.

This a solid book which gives constructive ideas and execises. O'Brien's record speaks for itself but essentially nothing beats the old master- Harry Lorraine's "How to develop a super power memory" Interesting red, 23 Feb 2005
Its an interesting book, a nice read for those of you interesting in memory and how the mind works. But its not the answer for those of you looking for a super-memory. It's got some good points, but it really wont help you remembering any better than before. And Brien is writing too little on the different subjects. Quite good, 31 Jan 2004
Quite good. The introductory stuff about the nature of memory and history of memory techniques is very interesting , but it goes on for too long before you get to the useful stuff. Possibly the best written book on memory, ever!, 24 Aug 2001
For anyone interesting in improving their memory, this must be the book to buy. It is a pleasure to read a book written in such a clear, logical manner with wonderful illustrations. You will pick this book up again and again. Having read a number of O'Brien's other books (all of which I have enjoyed) this is certainly the masterpiece. It covers both the working of your memory and easily applicable techniques. I was really useless at remembering numbers and this book has somewhat changed that... In fact I was able to remember a string of numbers 100 digits long a few days after the book arriving! (Longer than most telephone numbers!!) A few weeks ago I also used the techniques for remembering an important speech - again great results and suprisingly simple. In summary - a great read which should be on everyone's bookshelf. - Parents, buy it for your children - Children, buy it for your parents!
Excellent, 22 Jul 2001
Got this book yesterday memorized the planets in two minutes and had total recall after an hour and still have. I have just memorized a pack of playing cards using the method given took about 20 mins but practice will speed this up. Altogether an excellent way to spend the weekend. This is not like a text book the exercises appear every so often among the illustrations, and at first may seem just like a story book - but if you try any of the exercises you will see the strength of this book. The illustrations add to the book giving it the feel of a voyage through your mind. I'll just practice a bit longer on these cards then its off to Vegas!

Lots of great ideas., 07 Feb 2006
Like most Memory Makers books, this one is crammed full of good ideas. Each section shows you three different layouts using the same photos. The first section covers different layouts based on how much time you have to spend on them, the second concentrates on budget, and the final on skill. To be honest, the third layout in each section tends to require a lot of time, budget and skill. Still, there are some lovely layouts, and it's always fascinating to see the various ways the same photos can be scrapped. What I find really interesting is that the same person does each of the three different layouts - I have enough trouble coming up with a single layout for most photos!

A breakthrough in mind mapping!, 04 Oct 2000
This is a well argued and thorough examination of the applications of mapping techniques for educators. It goes beyond the well worn Buzan material and freshens up thinking about visual literacy and about independence of thinking. The arguements about language triangles are particularly useful. I took some of the exercises and used them with my class the next day.
The best book on mind / concept / model mapping ever, 01 Oct 2000
This is the ultimate guide to what Buzan calls mind mapping and the Harris and Caviglioli call Model Mapping. It totally demystifies map making. After years of trying I now have total confidence in how to do it myself, how to teach it to my pupils and how to use it as part of my classroom practice. In particular I now know that all my students are developing their thinking skills in my lessons. The Mapwise chapters chart the history of maps; how to go about making a map, how to teach mapping; thinking skills and mapping; improving communication between teachers and learners and MapWise classrooms in action. This is honestly a GREAT resource for teachers and I believe it is the ultimate guide to one of the most powerful accelerated learning techniques around. Any teacher seriously interested in raising levels of motivation, pupil interest and participation (as well as results!)should get one. Oh yes I forgot to mention that... I got special mention in my appraisal for the quality and diversity of my planning because of it...This is in spite of the fact that I spend 60% less time marking and planning than I used to!
a book which looks as good as it reads, 27 Sep 2000
This book is a fascinating insight into mind mapping - how it works, how it can be used to develop thinking and how it can go beyond the Buzan method. It is really strong on practical applications for learning and it is organised in such a way to make it easy to map your way through
