A top class numeracy home-study book, 08 Jul 2008
I bought this book on the back of Kathryn Wood's review, as I was taking the National Certificate in Numeracy Level 2 exam under similar circumstances to her. I used it for home-study over several weeks and today I passed the exam first time! I am thrilled!
I would highly recommend this book.
The best maths book I've seen, 04 Jan 2007
I have used this book quite a lot when teaching in my Adult Numeracy class. I like it because of its ease of use and layout. My learners also love it and have bought it for themselves.
Excellent Text, 15 Jan 2006
This is an excellent resource for teachers of adult numeracy. Friendly than Llewlynn and Greer, which it has replaced as my main source text . Very useful is the ordering by curriculum reference. Recommended
The Holy Grail, 13 Nov 2005
This book is terrific. I'm a Maths phobic, 3 failures at O Level (yes I'm quite old...) and I needed the Level 2 Numeracy qualification to do teaching. Two intensive weeks of revision and working through this book and the exercises at the end of it lead to ...a pass! One of my happiest moments exam-wise and not possible without the help of this superb, key text. Thanks ladies I owe you one.
A really useful book!, 13 Dec 2004
I use this book as a main text for adults preparing for level 1 and level 2 adult numeracy tests (it is less useful for Entry 3 students). It is comprehensively referenced to the Core Curriculum which helps to keep my teaching on track and makes paperwork less of a chore. I have found the level and style of questions to be exactly right for the adults I teach and the plentiful examples throughout help students take control of their own learning. One of the most useful resources I have found.

An excellent book well set to prepare candidates for the End Assessment and portfolio of evidence. Comprehensive reference sheets with practice tasks and Part A practice tasks for each Key Skill. There are 60 sample End Assessment questions. It is accompanied by a Tutors' CD which has all the answers, a marking scheme, teachers' guidance, and 20 vocationally-linked assignments and 300 EA-type questions. Fine product. Hope there is a level 2 and 3. Long overdue quality work.

At last an up-to-date Key Skills text, 28 Jan 2007
Always looking for up-to-date material for Key Skills, this book is excellent as it covers Part A of all three Mandatory Key Skills. Clearly set out, lots of practice material and helpful reference sheets for the students. I have the accompanying Tutors' CD and this gives all the answers to the tasks in the book, guidance on what the Standards mean in "normal" language, and wonderfully has around 20 assignments which cover a range of Mandatory and Wider Key Skills. These are vocationally linked and can be altered to suit any vocational area. My only question is when can we have the level 3 book and CD?

I am not considered the brightest but this really helped me sail through my level 3. I really would recommend it. Especially for younger readers who struggled early on like myself

Disappointing, 02 Oct 2006
Nicely produced. The bulk of the book ( 80 of 147 pages ) is on how to use evidence from A-levels for the level 3 portfolio. As my students at not doing A levels, this is of no use to me.
The first section of the book ( approx 40 pages) is a useful summary of the math involved at level 3, but without any exercises.
There are around 12 pages on the Application of Number level 3 requirement, quite inadequate unless you already know what you are doing, and if so, you won't need this book.
There are 15 pages on non-A level evidence, but the suggestions, though good, are not a substantial enough base for a level 3 portfolio. There is neither a sample level 3 paper, nor a sample portfolio.

Key Skills Communication, Application of Number and ICT, 29 Jun 2006
An excellent book well set to prepare candidates for the End Assessment and portfolio of evidence. Comprehensive reference sheets with practice tasks and Part A practice tasks for each Key Skill. There are 60 sample End Assessment questions. It is accompanied by a Tutors' CD which has all the answers, a marking scheme, teachers' guidance, and 20 vocationally-linked assignments and 300 EA-type questions. Fine product. Hope there is a level 2 and 3. Long overdue quality work.
