Fab intro to a fab series of books, 13 Oct 2008
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is the ideal starter book to this fab series. Its pretty basic compared to some of the later offerings and introduces us to a lot of the characters with its charming rhyming prose. Characters such as "Bottomley Potts, covered in spots" (a dalmation) and "Schnitzel Von-Krumm with the very low tum" (a dachund)(excuse the spelling!). And how could we forget "Scarface Claw" - the toughest tom cat in town, whom my 3 year old is currently totally potty about to the point that he's demanded more books featuring Scarface Claw for Christmas (and its only October). Thankfully he won't be disappointed as there are other books in the series featuring this tough tom cat, including a book dedicated to Scarface Claw himself! Overall I think Hairy Maclary is a brilliant read which will be enjoyed night after night by child AND parent. Some books can become monotonous to read over and over but I haven't yet tired of reading this one to my son who always waits in anticipation until Scarface Claw jumps out of the shadows. He enjoys joining with with the loud MEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOW and also enjoys reciting the final "to bed" at the end. I can't rate this book highly enough. Go buy it ... NOW!
Absolutley brilliant, 08 Jul 2008
My son got a set of these books bought for his birthday and this is his absolute favourite. He is only 2 but he joins in with the actions and certain areas of the book are a highlight for him (where the cat jumps out) I can now read this book without looking after reading it so many times.
I would definitley recommend this for all children - a must have for your library at home!
It'll never be left idyling on the bookshelf....., 26 Nov 2007
My 2 year old absolutely loved this booked from the first time I read it to her. With the rythmic style, tongue-twisting words, great story and wonderful fun, she was laughing with delight sitting still gripped with anticipation. She knows the book off by heart and I've read it so many times, so do I. She particularly loves Scarface Claw! In fact her reaction to this particular book led me to buy all of the Lynley Dodd books in the range! This will definitely be THE book I remember from my daughter's early childhood. So whether it's for your child or someone else's, you've just go to do it.... buy it... it'll never be left idyling on the bookshelf.
Fantastic!!, 01 Dec 2006
This book is an absolute must for every child.....and parent for that matter.
I first read Hairy Maclary to my little brother over 15 years ago and have been given it as a gift for my 1 year old. She thinks that it is fab and loves Scarface Claw - The toughest Tom in Town. The rythmn of the book is great and I have to agree with everyone else who says that it is perfect for bedtime.
Fabulous!, 16 Jul 2006
I started reading Hairy Maclary to my son when he was 6 months old. He is now 3 and it is still a firm favourite - a great achievement I think!

The dog and duck, 26 Aug 2008
The dog and duck concept might sound like a pub name, but this simple yet very well-written and beautifully rhythmic narrative featuring a Scottie dog and a duckling is a big favourite with 2-5 year olds.
Lynley Dodd's books are generally popular with the preschool class I teach: whether Scarface Claw, Slinki Malinki, or the perennial favourite Hairy Maclary... the stories are much-loved and much-requested. But this is the hands-down, runaway favourite.
The story is - for a Lynley Dodd - on the easy side. Children love the rhyme scheme accompanying Hairy Maclary's elements of the narrative and particularly enjoy the routine loud/simple interruptions to the rhyme provided by Zachary Quack's entrances into the narrative.
There is a simple tension between the protagonists before an endangered Hairy Maclary is saved from a serious problem (being unable to get out of the river he'd jumped into) by Zachary Quack's superior water skills - and the two live happily, if sleepily cuddled-up together, after! Beautiful, funny verse for adults and children, 30 Apr 2008
A firm favourite with reader and listener alike - it's a joy to read and my son loves reciting the lines. It's also very funny and entertaining, with a sweet ending. An outstanding picture book for small children , 25 Mar 2005
My children and I are big Hairy Maclary fans, and I love most of the stories. This one is a particular favourite as it is so wonderfully evocative of a lazy summery afternoon. Hairy Maclary just wants to doze in the warm sun but a rather perky little duckling, Zachary Quack, follows him persistently because he wants him to play. This makes me smile as it reminds
me all too much of a younger child following an older one (or following a parent desperate for five minutes peace and quiet). Then Zachary Quack turns out to be a true friend when Hairy Maclary gets himself stuck in the river and the ending is a happy warm surprise. As with the majority of Lynley Dodds' stories, the language she uses is wonderful: pittery pattery, footle and frolic, skeddadles etc. There's lots of strikingly unusual vocabulary which makes me smile, my children enjoy it and pick up and use in no time, and it is used with great flair in her rhythmical rhyming text. Outstanding.
Good one here, 09 Feb 2004
Another adventure of Hairy Maclary getting into trouble. It is a good book for reading out loud, with the words and rhymes falling easily into a rhythm. The kids appear to love the rhythm of the book. Lovely pictures. Loved by All the Family, 04 Mar 2002
Ms Dodd has an excellent command of ryhming and repition that is a big hit with children. At the tender age of 16months my daughter is already a big fan. Buy this book - if not for your child it would make an excellent present.

A boisterous bounce through a windy park with strong rhythm and sparkling rhyme, 05 Oct 2007
This is a lovely Hairy Maclary story, with a whole lot of rollicking rhythm, good rhyme, delightfully long words and off-beat vocabulary, and a lightly humorous story. Hairy MacLary is playing with a Frisbee/skimmer with Miss Plum on a windy day and there's a windswept wedding in the bandstand. Grandmother Pugh can't keep hold of her wedding hat (.... a riot of ribbon and lace, roses and feathers that tickle her face) and it blows away. Hairy Maclary stops chasing the skimmer and follows the hat instead right to the edge of the pond. He brings it back, a little worse for wear. Fabulous frolicking fun.

A good buy for all Charlie and Lola fans!

Deeply enjoyed by my 4 years old and 1.5 years old!, 28 Oct 2008
My 4-year-old daughter is a big fan of Hairy Maclary. Her first Hairy Maclary book was Hairy Maclary's Bone, which was given by local library as a free read. She soon picked up the rhymes and remembered all the dogs' names and attributes. Seeing her so fond of it, we bought other Hairy Maclary's books for her and she's loved every one of them. When my son, 16-month-old Ben, saw us reading Hairy Maclary and giggling, he always came to squeeze between us and pointing at the pictures of animals. He even tried to copy some of the rhyming words. When I asked him to choose a book to read, he would bypass his baby book section and go straight to get one of the Hairy Maclary's books. Recently I bought this carry case set from Amazon for his nursery friend's birthday. When it arrived, I left the carry case on the living room table. The next thing I know, Ben was trying to chew through the packaging and getting the books out!!!
Hairy Maclary Carry Case, 20 Mar 2007
BRILLIANT. My little boy loves these stories and the carry case really sets them off and really good value too. Perfect for taking on holiday. You will not be disappointed.
Easy to read, great rhymes and kids love it , 16 Oct 2006
Didn't get this from Amazon, but it is much cheaper here than we paid. It was an editors choice which we forgot to turn down - what a lucky mistake!
Our nearly 4 year old has loved this since he was 2, and I admit I enjoy reading it! The rhymes flow, unlike some books, and it makes it easy to read. I'd recommend this to anyone with kids aged 1 to perhaps 5 - the illustrations are excellent, and it's prose isn't laboured (unlike this review!). Hope anyone who gets it enjoys it like we have.

Great for keeping little ones busy!, 04 Jul 2008
This is a great book. It's a nice length for reading with your child (don't know about you, but I get bored easily!) and there's lots of reusable stickers for use in the book, plus extras for creating your own scenes.
A practical guide to the professional application of artificial nails!, 14 Sep 2008
A main strength of this book lies in its dedication to the study and practice of applying salon quality artificial nails. As a lecturer in Beauty Therapy, teaching students both how to apply correctly; and produce professional standard artificial nails is one of my main concerns. This book offers superior instruction in this respect. A unique feature is its coverage of the chemistry of nail products. So often; this aspect is glossed over; and it is essential for the modern Nail Technician to understand the makeup of the products they are using; not only because of health and safety; but to be able to use the products correctly and to their best benefit. An outstanding feature of this book is that it emphasises good application techniques and product handling that is strongly underpinned by good health and safety practices. One of the best features of this instructional book is the extensive section on maintaining artificial nails; as once students have learned how to perfectly apply a set of nails; they must be able to maintain those nails!
Excellent Book, 04 Mar 2008
I am studying acrylic at the moment and I have found this book to be an amazing help. I was having difficulties at home with types of nails I hadn't come across in class, a quick look in this book and it answered all my questions. I would recommend this book to anyone studying Nails. I take it everywhere with me so I can refer to it when needed.
The complete Nail Technician, 08 Feb 2008
I have just recently become qualified as a Nail Technican and found this book excellent. It has detailed step by step instructions with colour pictures and easy to follow instructions. It covers all you need to know, about setting up in business, diseases and disorders, exactly everything you need to know so you can become a good nail technican. This book has certinly helped me, and l would not hesitate to recommend this book to other budding Nail Technicans. Thank you Marian Newman you are a star.
Best Education Book, 30 Jan 2005
I have recently trained as a Nail Technician and found this book totally invaluable. It gave detailed instructions on Manicure and Pedicures and artifical nail enhancements. The thing that made this book stand out from others I have read was that the pictures were in colour and close up. This sounds really trivial but when you are trying to study nail conditions and following detailed instructions about applying liquid to the nails the pictures are so clear and easy to see. Another aspect of the book which was very handy is that it gives ideas of alternative manicures such as a mini manicure, which could be used if setting up in business. This book covers every aspect of being a nail technician including health and safety and anatomy etc. I can not express how much this book helped me in my studies and it will last as good reference point for years to come. I would recommend any Nail Technician to purchase this book.
the complete nail technician, 14 Jan 2003
A good reference book for nail technicians. Tells you everything you need to know about getting into the business, disorders and diseases of the nail, and step by step of how to extend nails with your chosen overlay, wether it be gel, acrylic, silk or fibreglass.

Hairy Maclary stops chasing the skimmer and follows the hat instead right to the edge of the pond. He brings it back, a little worse for wear. Fabulous frolicking fun.
Great for keeping little ones busy!, 04 Jul 2008
This is a great book. It's a nice length for reading with your child (don't know about you, but I get bored easily!) and there's lots of reusable stickers for use in the book, plus extras for creating your own scenes.
Tells you everything you need to know about getting into the business, disorders and diseases of the nail, and step by step of how to extend nails with your chosen overlay, wether it be gel, acrylic, silk or fibreglass.
brilliant for reading aloud, 21 Aug 2008
this book has a great repetition that littluns love. each page has a cat being chased by Hairy Mclary, with the repeated phrase 'But along came Hairy Mclary ...' on each page and my little boy loves saying this with me!
the text rhymes beautifully, the pictures are beautiful and Hairy Mclary gets his comeuppance (in a funny way) at the end.
i bought this as part of a set of 5 but this is the one my little boy wants read most, tho all of them are well-read (and not in the usual tedious vein that the majority of stories for under 5s seem to fall into).
If you and your offspring enjoy the Julia Donaldson books you'll love these too.
Perfect for even the smallest children, 04 Jun 2007
Jude is 13 months old and this is his favourite book. He mightn't understand the words, but he knows the story -- and the credit for that goes to Lynley Dodd. Everything about this book is right: the rhythms and rhymes are beguiling; the pictures and words complement each other perfectly; there is plenty to point at and to laugh at; even parents with minimal acting skills will find it easy to dramatize. Above all, the pacing is perfect. Jude can't talk, but when we get to the crucial page, he turns around and looks me in the eye and says ... well, something. Something that tells me he knows what's going on.
Don't hesitate to pick up any of Lynley Dodd's delightful books; just be prepared to read them out loud two, three or four times in a row. At least you probably won't have to fetch them yourself: a simple "Where's Hairy McLary?" gets Jude scampering to the cupboard.
A chase with a twist in the tail, 28 Jan 2001
An excellent Hairy Maclary tale. Children love the chasing of the cats and the rythmic style makes for easy reading. The joke at the end is not lost on even the youngest of children. Tom and Jerry in prose!

There is a simple tension between the protagonists before an endangered Hairy Maclary is saved from a serious problem (being unable to get out of the river he'd jumped into) by Zachary Quack's superior water skills - and the two live happily, if sleepily | | |
