This book was very helpful in the coruse im doing it covered the whole of the first year, hopefully some of the second year aswell. This book will save you money at the garage, 13 Apr 2005
Every car owner who is responsible for the maintenance of their vehicle should own this book. Even if you never get your hands dirty, this book will provide the theory, which together with the practice from the relevant Haynes/other Workshop Manual for your car, will give you the knowledge so you can avoid being "taken for a ride" when you car goes in for repair or a service. Great Book, 24 Jan 2005
A very good introduction to vehiscle Mechanics. Its overs many areas in straight forward English and slowly moves into a reference book for more experienced Mechanics. Highly recommended.

This book is more suited as a text book rather than a light read. It book is more suited for students who are studying a relative subject in automotive engineering. This book is packed full of technical reference, with illustrations. It is an ideal reference book. The content within this book will require basic previous knowledge in automotive engineering to really benefit from this title. Every single aspect of a motor car is explained in this book, the latest edition will cover the most up-to-date technology within a motor car.
Initially daunting but ultimately fulfilling!, 25 Apr 2000
I needed to know how cars worked at a relatively high level, without very much prior knowledge. After several weeks in intensive care following an initial scan of the book when it arrived (loads of formulas/graphs/unfamiliar diagrams etc!), I summoned up the courage to start from the beginning. I was pleasantly surprised to find clear and precise descriptions and definitions of all of a motor vehicle's components, complete with detailed info on how they co-operate. The book is very well laid out, littered with helpful "artists-impression" type diagrams and I was surprised how much I picked up in a short space of time. However, this book is supposed to be a reference manual not an idiot's guide, so if your background isn't in physics and you haven't any previous knowledge of motor vehicles (like me!) prepare for a challenge! . (But it's worth it)

Good quality for its price, 25 Sep 2007
Although there are some better and more comprehensive books in the market, the relatively low price and the plurality of images&drawings of this book makes it a good buy.
What can I say..., 26 Nov 2002
If you buy this book you will never be dissapointed, I've had mine for 2 years now and it provides me with all of the information concerning vehicle systems that I need it has never let me down yet- a true encyclopedia of information. Heisler covers this subject to his usual precise standard and backs up his work with many well used, extremely concise diagrams. You will miss out if you don't buy it or you will just end up paying the library a lot of money for another unreturned book. If you get this book get the Advanced Engine Technology book as well then you will have the whole car covered and at a knockout price!

I think that this is a well written manual, and easy to understand texts but I wish that the pictures were more detailed making it hard for anyone that picks it up to put it down. It will give the book a sense of in the motor kind of feel.

Highly mathematical, 10 Oct 2008
Despite its title, this book is emphatically not for someone trying to understand the basics of EVs and HEVs. It is highly mathematical, and the qualitative descriptions are thin. A good example is the explanation of Peukert's number on page 68/69. This is almost wholly mathematical with no hint of its significance (a high Peukert number is an issue in an EV battery because it means the battery won't perform as well at the high discharge rates used).
The book might be helpful to someone who was familiar with the concepts, had excellent mathematical skills and planned to build an EV simulator. I stress "might" because I do not know enough to validate the accuracy of the mathematics.
Even at a qualitative level I did not have a great deal of confidence in the book. The coverage of engine and motor sizing for an HEV in the final chapter seemed to me to be less incisive than I have encountered elsewhere, and possibly mistaken
