Need more information, 11 Nov 2008
This book never give me what I was expecting of it, am disappointing in that I needed more information and explanation in detail with the practical task from college and the pictures that are in the book there is no need giving pictures that are not fully informational in terms of labelling. This book aim at people with little or no knowledge of plumbing so it need to give more explanation. I am left at a cross road a lot of times with this book.
It could be much much better.
JTL Tech Cert Lev 2 6129, 10 Nov 2008
This is THE book to refer to if you're doing the C&G 6129 course. It leaves nothing out. If you're with OLCI please don't just rely on their own folder it's just not got the info in. This JTL book is clearly set out and really easy to absorb the info. The clear diagrams and explanations don't leave you wondering. Just buy it !
Excellent book for level 2 both 6129 and 6089, 05 Sep 2008
Here at PPL Training in York we used to use the old JTL Level 2 plumbing book for our City & Guilds NVQ level 2 courses. This lastest book combines both the NVQ side and the tech cert (6129) side, which is a good step forward as BOTH qualifications must be taken to gain a NVQ 2 in Plumbing.
The book is clearly laid out with individual chapters on the course structure. Errors from the previous versions have been corrected and along with clear colour diagrams makes this book suitable for both young and old alike. We at PPL train a mixture of age groups and find this book a very valuable reference and learning resource.
IF you are training to be a plumber either at a private college like PPL or a local FE college this is one of the books you MUST buy - excellent.

Good but not perfect, 14 Dec 2006
A good book but not detailed enough. We use this as an additional training resource here at PPL Plumbing Training in York. As with the Level 3 version it seems to be aimed at younger learners. It is easy to read and gives a fair amount of coverage but we believe there are more comprehensive level 3 books out there.
best book for nvq, 10 Mar 2006
this book is the best i have read for the nvq qualification together with treloar gas instalation technology they should give you a very good understanding of modern plumbing practice

Nearly a good reference - but basic errors in it , 19 Oct 2008
This book so very nearly could have been an excellent reference, but there are fundamental misprints in it. These should have been corrected by this, the 3rd edition. For example, on page 38 re: Water pressure. It states ...."the 1000Kg of water would weigh 1000x9.81 =
9810 newtons per square meter..." No it wouldn't - it would 'weigh' 1000Kg! (on earth). Strictly speaking, N/m2 are units of pressue, not weight. It would exert a PRESSURE of 9810 newtons per square metre.
Then it goes on to say in an example "... the pressure at the base of a 4m high container of water with a cross-sectional area of 1m square is 4x9.81 = 39.24 kN"
Wrong again - kN are units of FORCE, not pressure. This should be kN per square metre.
These are not the only examples of errors in this book. Somewhat confusing, and not adequately explained, so only 3 stars.
Well laid out, concise and comprehensive., 13 Jul 2007
This book is great. I bought it to help with redesigning an old central heating and drainage system in a large, dilapidated house and needed more detail than one finds in the otherwise excellent Collins DIY series. One of this book's best achievements is its layout - every aspect of plumbing has been skillfully divided into concise, separate sections, saving the need to wade through a load of extraneous detail to get to the bit you're interested in. Each section describes and lists clearly any applicable building regs, and outlines the various advantages, disadvantages and pitfalls associated with different strategies and systems. There's a great section on noise transmission in pipework, as well as on working with lead, steel and other materials. The book is aimed at NVQ/SVQ, but is a great reference work for any competent DIYer
A Quality Text for Training, 27 Feb 2007
This text covers all aspects needed by an aspiring plumber, covering everything from the basics through to gas fitting. Here at Panda Plumbing Training in Barnsley we use this text as a regular reference source. The alternate page layout of text and images is good but it would benefit from colour!
Great book, not all about measurements!, 14 Feb 2007
I bought this in addition to some other plumbing books that I'd already bought from Amazon (e.g. JTL Plumbing Level 2, Muscroft Plumbing) and am glad that I did.
I was initially rather dubious, especially after reading Andy Mason's review which indicated that the book was all about measurements ... what a load of rubbish. Yes, on pages 124 to 127 there is a section on sizing hot and cold pipework but that's about it. So far I have read through parts 1 and 2 and only encountered a few pages of numbers, formulas etc ... all of which if you're doing a C&G Level 2 or NVQ 2 will be very useful.
This book is excellent for allowing you to do some quick revision and/or reviewing before sitting an exam OR after having done other reading and studying as a way of dotting the "i"s and crossing the "t"s.
Get it if (like me) you're doing your C&G/NVQ level 2 and/or 3.

Excellent book buy it, 22 Feb 2008
We use this book on our NVQ 2 Plumbing course here a PPL Training. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and the clear and easy to follow diagrams are a must. As I mentioned on my review of the Level 2 JTL Plumbing book, this book at not as technical as some out there. But we would recommend it in conjuction with the JTL book.
Great new plumbing title, 02 Mar 2007
I just received a copy of this new Heinemann revision guide today. It looks really great in helping me with my plumbing technical certificate. The information is really clear and the questions all have a description of the answers. I have bought quite a few books and I really think that this is going to be the best book to help me with my exams.

Even better than the JTL book, 30 Jun 2007
I am currently studying at a College where they use the JTL book as the core text. I bought Muscrofts 'Plumbing' as I've always found it useful to have more than just the one reference. Then if I dont understand one explanation I can try the other and see if that makes more sense.
Throughout this year I have referred to Muscrofts book time, and time again. Like its JTL rival it has a chapter on each of the subjects that are assessed in the technical certificate. But I found the descriptions and illustrations easier to understand, and the multiple choice questions at the end are a fantastic bonus, and really help you prepare for the tests. In fact, they are as good as those covered in the JTL's revision book, which you have to pay twenty odd pounds for.
I would highly recommend this text to anyone wanting to learn the basics of plumbing, which is not just hot and cold water, central heating etc, but also lead work and guttering. The only disappointment is that Muscroft has yet to produce a book aimed at Level 3.

It is easy to read and gives a fair amount of coverage but we believe there are more comprehensive level 3 books out there. best book for nvq, 10 Mar 2006
this book is the best i have read for the nvq qualification together with treloar gas instalation technology they should give you a very good understanding of modern plumbing practice Nearly a good reference - but basic errors in it , 19 Oct 2008
The book is aimed at NVQ/SVQ, but is a great reference work for any competent DIYer A Quality Text for Training, 27 Feb 2007
Fabulous Plumbing Book, 17 Jul 2006
"A great book. Full of information - covered everything I needed to know and more" Excellent book buy it, 22 Feb 2008
Top plumbing book, 14 Dec 2006
We use this book at PPL Plumbing Training Ltd in York to train our City and Guilds 6129 level 2 students. The text is clear and consise and unlike other books is aimed at the matured learner. The books digrams are in depth at at the right level along with the text. Self-study modules alos help the learner. 5 out of 5! Reg or Ron? Who would you pick?, 01 Sep 2006
Atkinson for England is one of those books that everyone should read, whether you like football or not. There are so many laugh-out-loud-wipe-tears-of-laughter-from-your-eyes moments and it portrays the FA as a bunch of bumbling old duffers (which every football fan feels is true) who cannot get names right.
It is a brilliant read- highly recommended. I bought six copies of this book....., 26 Jul 2005
I have absolutely no interest in football (or plumbing) and grabbed a copy of this gem from a library in a rush before they closed. There is not a lot that will make me laugh out loud on the London Underground - this did. Hence copies for friends at Christmas. These writers seem to have had a one-hit wonder - a shame really, for if they could repeat the success with anything like as good, they'd be as successful as Tom Sharpe.
The England Farce, 13 Oct 2003
Coming just a week after the England players threatened to strike, the themes of Atkinson for England are all too familiar. Initially intended as a 'it could never happen here' comic novel, recent events have proved that life is often stranger than fiction. All in all an hilarious read - a hidden comic gem.
Ron and Reg, 03 Jul 2001
When England manager Glenn Gould resigns just ten days before a crunch match against Germany, FA Chief Brendan Fendon thinks he has the ideal replacement. Ron Atkinson is flash, debonair and has the ideal experience for the job. Unfortunately, Brendan doesn't get Ron Atkinson. He gets Reg. Gary James, author of acclaimed titles on football legend Joe Mercer and his beloved Manchester City, has produced his first novel in collaboration with Mark Brown - a comic and chaotic football farce revolving around amiable plumber and Sunday League manager Reg Atkinson and his trusty assistant Norman Whaddon. When Fendon is summoned to South America for a FIFA conference, the interviews for the vacant post are left in the 'capable' hands of colleague Sir Richard Scratcher. Our hero Reg travels to FA headquarters for what he thinks is a top-notch central heating job at Wembley Stadium. Instead, he unwittingly becomes manager of the national team. Reg is left to face the world's media, a bemused England squad and a German side gunning for victory. Worse still, how can he return the diamond earrings that he has bought out of his signing-on fee for adoring barmaid Carol? What follows is a humorous and satirical swipe at football today, from the pomposity of FA headquarters to the camaraderie of the non-league game. Can Reg, the little guy, succeed against all the odds? And as for Big Ron? Well, he just wants his boiler fixing.
Excellent characterisation and very very funny., 11 Jun 2001
I was surprised by this book as I never usually pick up sports fiction. It was on the recommendation of a friend and I'm pleased to say it was one of the better recommendations I've had. The characterisation is excellent. The conversations and friendship between the two main characters is delightful and even the supporting characters are well defined. They are so believable one warms to them, even down to recognising parts of personalities I've known in my past. The use of cameo appearances is inspired. It seems that the authors have used celebrities to create the element of doubt in the reader's mind - is this fiction? Or is it fact? Whatever, the end result is reminiscent of the early works of Tom Sharpe - it is satire and anarchic comedy at its best and I would urge everybody to buy this book. For the most part, the book is set in Nottingham and London, which made my enjoyment level overflow, being a regular commuter. It's also certainly the most I've laughed in years, much to the disgust of my fellow passengers on the London to Nottingham train.
