While doing my counselling Diploma I became a bit bogged down with the many different theores and not having time to read all the books available for each one, with all the essays to do etc.
I found this book to be the one that explains all the main theories in a very clear and concise way, leading the reader to delve further into different therapies if they so wish.
It has easy to read language without too much counselling jargon, good illustrations and real life examples to demonstrate points made.
I would recommend this book for anyone either doing a counselling course themselves or considering which type of counselling might suit them personally.
An excellent starter book for all in this field. A must have, 11 Jul 2003
I found this book by chance while looking for 2 books from the reading list of my diploma course, in order to critique them. I found this book a godsend. The assignments from the course can be a little daunting to say the least. After reading this book it all became clear and i started to grasp the theories easily. I mentioned it in class, it has aided my completion of several assignments and has since been added to our reading list...say no more. Read this book if you're or not a counsellor, 28 Jul 1999
This book is meant for everyone whether they intend to enter the counselling or need to learn social skills. It is well structure, is very well written using crisp language, has lots of case studies, has lots of discussion...etc. Although I'm not a counsellor I found the book very interesting to read, it gave me insights to what counselling all about, and how to perceive others.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in learning good basic counselling skills , 17 Nov 2008
I am currently ten weeks into the Counselling Skills Level 2 certificate course and this book is proving to be invaluable. It pulls together all the threads of the course content we have covered so far in a fun and informative way, it's really easy to follow and understand. It takes you from the basics of counselling techniques through to more specialist themes such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which is my area of interest. I refer to the book in every lesson now for hints and tips alongside the formal course guide.
My fellow students find the role play sessions difficult and sometimes stressful and this book sets out in clear terms how to start, structure and end the session, and gives constructive ideas for what works well or less well dependant on your style and the situation. It gives you confidence to try new things.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning good basic counselling skills, and in particular to anyone thinking of, or currently attending Counselling Skills training
Leaning to Counsel: Develop the Skills, Insight and Knowledge to Counsel Others, 24 Oct 2008
Unsurprisingly this book has yet again been reprinted (3rd Edition)and continues to contribute a real foundation stone in the learning of student counsellors of many theoretical disciplines. I also think that the insight and understanding (in relation to oneself, others and the nature of relationships)that can be gained through reading this book is an invaluable resource to anyone working with 'people'...or, for that matter, anyone engaged in any kind of relationship..........which possibly accounts for it's huge success over such a long period! Perhaps it could be included on the reading list for Sixth Form College's Lifeskills studies?
Excellent book for trainee counsellors, 11 Dec 2005
This concise, accessible, practical, easy to read, and inexpensive text, is an excellent introduction to counselling. The authors’ warm and friendly approach together with their use of thought-provoking case studies, illustrations, examples of skills in action, and stimulating activities make learning an interesting and rewarding experience. Besides teaching basic counselling skills such as good listening and responding supportively, the authors identify the essential qualities required to become an empathic and effective counsellor. The book concludes with a helpful glossary of terms, a list of useful organisations and internet resources, and a comprehensive further reading section. In my opinion, this extremely good value for money book is essential reading for counselling students, or those considering pursuing a career in counselling. Moreover, it merits a well deserved place on the recommended reading list of every introductory counselling course. Ella, trainee counsellor
ideal for total beginners, 17 Jul 2003
I bought this book when I was looking for help in caring for a family member who refused to seek professional counselling (having had counselling myself I knew the benefits to be gained). I thought that perhaps, if I could get a few pointers from this book, I might be able to help them myself. It proved to be a very easy to read, easy to understand book which gives practical help and information on what counselling involves at all levels, whether at a professional level or that of a friendship based helper-helpee relationship. It includes case histories throughout with good examples of counselling practice serving to illustrate the points made and the techniques described. There are thought provoking exercises that make you search yourself for honest answers, leading to a deeper understanding of ones own behaviour and emotions, thereby facilitating empathy with others. It was such a good book, I was encouraged to enrol in an initial counselling skills course shortly after reading it.

Great audio CDs from the master success guru, 29 Jun 2008
I am a great fan of Brian Tracy's work. He has a gift for simplifying potentially complex topics in a logical step-wise manner that is easy to assimilate and internalise. He also has a good soothing yet assertive speaking voice which is crucial for audio lectures of this nature.
The two CDs that come with this package are both very good quality and are broken down into clearly defined topics - it is a shame that there is no accompanying leaflet to display the topic titles , neither are they on the cover - but that is only a minor point. In any case, it would make sense for the listener to make his or her own notes; and maybe this was the idea behind not including them in the first place.
Having read many reviews of Brian's work it is easy to see how anyone who takes the content seriously will feel empowered; but this will only last if the techniques are internalised and used regularly to build well-formed habits and routines in your personal and working life. That's the hard bit! In this regard, it is probably a good idea to use this material along-side Stephen R. Covey's work on 'The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People'. The latter is a distinct work and should be highly commended in it's own right as it offers a different flavour of the material with an emphasis on paradigms.
This is a good buy at a very reasonable price. As for the criticism that 'isn't Self development material just common sense?' . . . it's funny how uncommon common sense really is!

This set of tapes changed my life!, 29 Apr 2001
I purchased this set of tapes around 3 years ago at a seminar. I listened on a daily basis and took on board the points raised - within 6 months I had tripled my salary and found an inner confidence that I didn't realise existed. My brother-in-law has a similar story. I realise these tails of miracle 'cures' are usually made up but I am living proof that the only thing that is holding you back is yourself - 'anything you can believe you can achieve' - you sure can
Are you ready to move onwards, upwards?, 06 Jan 2001
I came across this audio cassette package a while ago and it may sound cheesy to say this, but it did change my life. When I was wondering why I didn't seem to be earning the kind of money I wanted, when I didn't seem to have enough time to accomplish things, Brian Tracy will explain why. He describes sources of motivation, self-esteem, really thinking, planning and doing things that will enrich and fulfil your life. I particularly liked the sections on writing down your goals, doing things a little at a time that will help you achieve your aims. These ideas have helped my focus more clearly on what I want to do with my life. I also liked sections on letting go of fear. So, if you are not getting want you want from your life and want some insight on how to move on, then this is the audio series for you.
Lifetime, Ready Reference, 12 Mar 1998
Beyond the plethora of taped and printed materials on psychological theory, this offers a down-to-earth, '1-2-3' steps and techniques approach to immediately apply to situations in my personal and professional life. I listen to the set on a regular basis for emphasis and rejuvenation.

Perfect match for the AQA spec, 17 Sep 2006
Like the previous reviewer I use this book to deliver the AQA GCSE spec to adult learners and this will be the fourth year that I have used it (and the previous edition).
What I find particularly valuable about the book is that, unlike some competitor publications, each chapter is very clearly mapped to each element of the AQA spec - my learners know exactly where they are in the spec at all times.
The book has a fresh open, clear layout without resorting overmuch to 'flashy' graphics and colour. For learners not attempting the Higher Tier (ie only aiming at Foundation Tier) it is particularly useful that the elements of the text that are exclusive to HT are clearly identified by vertical lines in the margin.
Feedback from the learners is very positive - detail is about right and it's very easy to digest and find your way around. There's a good glossary.
Overall - excellent value for money and the only text the learner will need.
Almost perfect...... certainly the best around., 19 May 2006
I use this book as set text for two evening classes of mature students and have found it to be invaluable for both their reference source and confirmation of my own session notes throughout each course. Barbara Woods follows the AQA requirements exactly and the book has especially good explanations of report writing and Methods of research.
It is reassuring to the student when they find no contradiction between the lessons and the set text. This is the scenario for my students... and without me having to compromise my own interpretations and session plans.
I would like to see a little more emphasis on examples of everyday application......... but then I would have nothing to do!
Easy to use, 02 Apr 2006
This book provides very good support for the AQA course. The sections are well layed out and easy to use and understand. In this, more up to date publication, there are additional chapters which help you plan, conduct and write your report(assignment). It also gave an indication of the marks awarded per section, which was very useful for determining what was required.
teachers viewpoint, 11 Jun 2003
This is the updated version of Woods 'Basics in Psychology' - adapted to match the new AQA spec. It's very accessible and friendly though sometimes contains additional non-essential studies where more detail of key studies would be more appropriate. The students found it very easy to use and commented particularly on the effective layout and use of highlighting. For those studying AQA GCSE this is an essential text. For anyone else it provides a useful introduction & overview of numerous topic areas within Psychology without going overboard on unfamiliar terminology.

This book provides very good support for the AQA course. The sections are well layed out and easy to use and understand. In this, more up to date publication, there are additional chapters which help you plan, conduct and write your report(assignment). It also gave an indication of the marks awarded per section, which was very useful for determining what was required.

Having bought this text in the summer, in preparation for teaching GCSE psychology for the first time, I have been impressed by the whole package!
Learners find they can dip in and out of the chapters with additional supportive key terms and exam hints helpfully arranged throughout. Simply presented topics are awash with colour and vibrance to keep interest.
As a teacher, the resources CD has been immensely valuable. The interactive multiple choice testers allow full class participation at the end of each chapter.
My only disappointment is that the text is missing a glossary(although the authors claim to have included one!).
But to finish on a positive note...it's incredibly good value for money!

De-mystifier, 03 Oct 2007

A great starting point, very readable and covering a wide spectrum of topics, 30 Dec 2006
I just received this a couple of days ago and am finding it highly useful; I am currently in the first year of my Psychology degree and this book explains many areas I am covering with such clarity that I feel this is a must read for all Psychology undergraduates. Encompassing a wide range of topics, from Language to Gender, 'Simply Psychology' provides a brief yet informative introduction to ideas from various approaches such as Biological, Cognitive, Developmental etc. to help us understand the basics of Psychology. Written in a basic format, this would be very helpful for those with no or little prior knowledge in the area.
An excellent starting point. All M. W. Eysenck's texts appear to be very readable indeed.

A realy usefull book for anyone either inerested in or studying psychology. Well set out, easy to follow and understand. Self assesment at the end of each section to see if you have understood the previous chapter; and really good indexing.

If you teach CIE and work overseas, like me, then forget the CIE reading list. For A2 Psychology this is the book. The OCR Practice Psychology series exactly match the CIE syllabus, better than any other books. Cheap, concise and perfect, don't bother with anything else, this is all you need for your option choices. I can say the same for the 'Organisations' title which was our other option choice. I imagine the other 3 are just as good, but haven't used them myself.

Making dreams happen..., 08 Jan 2002
I used this at work a few years ago and it was amazing. I have jusr reordered my own copy! It is the best motivational series I've come across.
Immensely helpful resource from Dwyer & Roberts!, 25 Nov 2007
Psychology for GCSE Level , 12 Oct 2007
As a teacher this is an excellent text and hasn't left my desk since ordering it. I have found it useful especially with weaker members of my class as they can follow the layout much better than some of the other textbooks available for the course. Within each section the keywords provides a basic understanding for the students and can help to add to their glossary's, and an extremely useful coursework and methods section at the back. Overall a very good book and would recommend it to students and teachers alike. Could also be used by AS students getting to grips with a new subject.
All M. W. Eysenck's texts appear to be very readable indeed.
simply psychology, 25 Apr 2003
a must read for all Social Workers and trainee Social Workers. I believe it would also be very useful for all people working in Social Care and the NHS. I have used it for my social work course, and have found it the easiest book to under | | |
