Excellent book, 18 Dec 2007
This is one of the book which i think every body should use for hir GMAT exam. It can be truly said Bible of GMAT. Highly recommended. A Must Have, 03 Sep 2006
The secret for the GMAT is practice and stamina.
For my own preparation, I used The Princeton Review, Kaplan's Book and ETS' The Official Guide for GMAT Review.
I will go through the advantages and disadvantages of each, and explain why The Official Guide for GMAT Review was the best of the three and why you should give it more time than the others.
Princeton:
Plus
- Good review sections (both quantitative and verbal)
- Practice tests similar to the GMAT
- Online tests are easy to review
- Provides you with a test strategy on how to crack the questions
- Explicitly advises you to practice also with The Official Guide for GMAT Review
Disadvantages
- Does not explain why a choice is wrong
- Not enough practice questions
Kaplan:
Plus
- Good quantitative review sections (appendix was great)
- Interactive software for reviewing the Kaplan GMAT strategies
- Practice tests similar to the GMAT
- Practice tests and sections are difficult, this creates in you a sense of urgency
- Plenty of practice questions
Disadvantages
- The software interface is old and slow, you are left to work with a little box on the screen
- Practice tests and sections' answer choices are not very well explained
- The questions are far fetched and do not fall in the spirit of the GMAT, this might lead you the wrong path
The Official Guide for GMAT Review:
Plus
- More than plenty of practice questions
- You might get the same or similar questions on the GMAT (like I did)
- The practice questions are organized by level of difficulty, the last ones are the most difficult
- Free PowerPrep software that has two practice tests exactly similar to the GMAT in look and feel (free online tests at the mba dot com website http://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT/Tools/PowerprepSoftware.htm)
- The practice questions reveal actual GMAT test patterns
Disadvantages
- Absence of test taking techniques
- The skills review sections are poor
- Only the last 200 questions in every practice section will be like the ones you will see on the GMAT (unless you perform poorly)
This Official Guide from GMAC should be the cornerstone of your preparation, simply because the questions are from past tests and are very thoroughly researched. This will allow you to develop insight into the test mentality.
Equally important the correct and the wrong answer choices for each question are explained in detail. You will learn the various ways used to lead you in error and consequently, you will develop the feel to spot and eliminate wrong answers.
The rules of grammar on which the GMAT Sentence Correction questions are based are best outlined in this guide. I had a lot of difficulty with the Verbal section until I read through the explanations here.
Overall, this book shows you all the tricks of the GMAT. I did not have bad surprises when I took the actual test; it seemed that I had seen all the questions before. Great study Guide, 03 Feb 2006
I also felt compelled to write after reading the first review. I think this book is extremely helpful! And I felt better using this book than others because it is made using real GMAT questions from past tests. So you know the material is the real thing. Apparently because it is written by the people who write the GMAT exam, it is the only study guide that can use real questions. The diagnostic test at the front helped me to determine where I needed to spend my study time, which cut down on what I thought I needed to study. Also, the practise questions are in order from easiest to hardest for every section, so I knew that when I started having trouble I was in a harder section. It gave me a lot of help! My weakness is in quantitative skills, so I also purchased The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review for extra practise. The basic information in the book is the same, but the questions were again, very helpful. Oh and there are extra score sheets in the back if you mess up or want to practise more. If you want more practise without the answer explanations.
Highly Recommended, 12 Jan 2006
Don’t normally write a review but seeing the comments from A Reader, I felt compelled to post one. I found this book EXTREMELY useful because I knew that the questions were truly representative of the actual test questions, unlike those contained in other study guides. In my opinion the Official Guide is essential for GMAT preparation, and crucial for maximising your score – I managed a 720 score mainly thanks to this book.
WHAT A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 01 Jan 2006
This book will give u a NIGHTMARE just like the thought of taking the exam will. I was hoping that being the OFFICIAL book of the GMAT it will be my best option for studying for the exam. The explanations for the Math problems are so vague and long without taking consideration of time constraints. I now have to shell out another £20 to buy Kaplan's book; at least it will give me indepth explanations and time friendly strategies. If u need a lot of questions to practice with, then u can buy this book. Otherwise ITS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaplan GMAT 800, 07 Apr 2008
I think this is a great book to practice for the GMAT, especially for those who think they can get over 700-730. It has some quite difficult questions and some quite detailed answers. I was especially dreading the sentence correction section of the GMAT and found the study section in this book invaluable.
Even though the book looks quite thick -beware that there are lengthy explanations -so there are quite so many questions in here. However, it is good in that it stops you from getting complacent as there will definitely be some questions here that you will get wrong.

An excellent book!, 16 May 2002
The book is a good help if you want to improve your score in the GMAT. It takes you through the Sentence Correction Strategies of avoiding traps like parralelism, incorrect verb tense usage etc, Reading Comprehension with a focus on reading for GMAT and Critical Reasoning. The different sections on the book have a practice test each after which there are three tests on each area of the Verbal Section. This is followed by Comprehensive Verbal Section Tests. The book also helps with strategies on AWA.
Great book for anyone looking to improve their verbal score, 13 Jan 2002
I had a dismal score on my GMAT, even after paying $1,000+ for one of those GMAT classes. I then bought this book and studied its tips/techniques. As a result, my percentile increased by 30. I would recommend this book over paying more money for those GMAT classes. It's strategy for critical reasoning is much clearer than what my GMAT instructor was ever able to teach me.

GMAT Maths Section, 21 Nov 2007
I have just had the opportunity to enrol on a Management Style MSc. As a non graduate i was required to conduct a GMAT test as proof of competence to enrol. I was only given 8 days warning (6 days afer book arrived through Amazon)and although this book recommends several weeks of revision i managed to post a GMAT of 700 in under a week. Noting i also have a full time job and family, revision was restricted to about 3 hours per evening. This book gives great examples and line by line explanation on how to do each question. This book is a must!! (please note i was fairly comfortable/ confident about the problem solving and literacy sections and therefore only revised the maths which i had not done since i got a 'C' in GCSEs in 1987.

Good for revision, 05 Oct 2006
I found this book quite useful if you haven't been doing math for some time and you need some revision. First chapted provide quick revision and then exercizes based on the those revisions. Two main topics covered is Math and Geometry.
Recommend to buy for students who are preparing for Graduate jobs as well!
Great, quick practice. , 12 Nov 2007
Great if, like me, you're struggling for time. The mini tests were a godsend. I didn't see them in any of the other books so grabbed this one and it was perfect. Completing the mini tests gave me a lot more confidence, and I found the algebra and geometry questions really helpful practice.

Errors in book. Publishers won't issue refund. Don't buy this., 21 Jul 2008
I was doing the practice problems in this book, and found an error in the answer to one of the quantitative problems. I called the publisher to point out their error, and they didn't care, and wouldn't give me my money back. Don't buy this book, or support this publisher. They don't care about the accuracy of the information of their books, and should not be publishing review books, if they don't know the difference between a prime number, and a number that's not prime. Waste of money.
Not exactly it, but definitely a should read, 29 May 2006
The book is not exactly packed with premium GMAT stuff, but its loaded full of little tricks and tips to help you sabe a whole load of time. Its a book you should read after reading the more serious kaplan and princeton books ... I did... and I made 700.
Good entry to the GMAT process, 18 Mar 2002
I agree with the other reviewer that this book is quite light, but thought it made a good entry to the GMAT process. Of course it doesn't cover the kind of depth you might like, but then most serious GMAT students will probably get a few textbooks anyway. I'd recommend starting with this one, as it's reasonably comprehensive and very readable, and it has two self-assessment tests at the end.
For Dummies indeed, 11 Jun 1999
If you're serious about MBA...this book is far too light.

Tough Questions - Really gives you good practice, 14 Sep 2005
Surprisingly good - Kaplan has a reputation for having the most challenging questions for GMAT practice, and I certainly found this to be the case. I liked the way that you can focus on diagnosing your weak areas, and then focusing your practice on questions that you find difficult. Especially useful for busy people who also have to prepare their admissions essays while trying to hold down a full-time job!
Buy it if you're aiming to crack 700, 02 Aug 2005
I sat the GMAT and scored an overall score of 730 (97th percentile) and an AWA of 6.0/6.0. I can say without a doubt, that once you have understood the fundamentals (through other Kaplan series), this book will allow you to practice questions that are realistic to the exam, if you are aiming to score over 700.
