Contradictions aplenty, 09 Jan 2008
Every chapter contradicts the last. It seems to be a mess of platitudes, no new ideas and, I'm sorry to say, a waste of time reading.
Unaccustomed as I am ..., 02 Nov 2002
An excellent book. My dad would be first to admit he isn't a naturally gifted public speaker and he gets a bit nervous at times. But after reading this book, he a fantastic job for me on my Big Day! He was so relaxed and he got the balance between humour and seriousness spot on. I can't recommend this book too highly ... it's brilliant!
This book is a must for every 'father of the bride', 02 Nov 2002

A must for every Dad about to give away his daughter!, 23 Oct 2000
As a bride-to-be, I want to be sure that my big day goes as smoothly as possible. I can try to control most things, but the speeches are out of my hands. I have bought this book to help my Dad not to embarrass himself or me, well, not too much! Making the Father of the Bride's Speech is easy to read and full of practical advice. The author writes clearly about the different stages of the speech and includes helpful ideas as well as examples of jokes, quotes and how to be sensitive without being sloppy. This book is a must for any Dad about to give away his daughter, especially if he's not used to public speaking, or just totally overwhelmed about the do's and don't's of making a wedding speech.

This book is dedicated to "Paula, 'bride' of my life", and this gives you an idea of the standard of the humour on offer here. The example speeches are cringe-makingly awful, and the example jokes range from outrageously inappropiate to bafflingly unfunny, through just plain corny. Many of them I would feel uncomfortable making in mixed company, let alone at my wedding (and I'm no prude). The one star I've given this book is because it motivated me to just get on and write my speech, because my efforts could never be worse than the examples in this book. If you're writing a speech I would advise you to do the same and just get on with it, but if you really want to get a book I'd suggest getting the "Confetti" book on wedding speeches- it's slightly less cheesy, and also has some quotes that might be useful. And good luck. All you need to make a start on your speech, 18 Apr 2002
Most of the advice I've seen on websites has either been painfully obvious or quite irrelevant to my situation. After a couple of hours reading this entertaining and helpful book, I was ready to start putting my speech together with confidence and optimism that I didn't have before. It's particularly helpful if you're concerned about how to convey sincere (and expected) emotions without your mates laughing at you! It won't give you masses of content to crib from, though, but it does give enough guidance for you to produce your own material, which is probably better. Well worth the money.

A bog standard wedding guide, 11 Aug 2008
With the Debrett's name, you might think you're getting some kind of guide on how to organise a slightly more up-market and stylish wedding than the riff-raff; however in actual fact it's really just a bog standard wedding guide more artistically presented than the rest. Contains everything you will probably need to know, but you could get that information a lot more cheaply in other works without having to pay for lots of full-page arty photographs taken at weddings of people with double-barrelled names. There's really nothing extra here in genuine content.
Although I purchased this, my wife and I hardly perused this book at all in the end, and found the cheap and cheerful handy pocket-sized Weddings (Collins GEM) sufficient for purpose for our wedding.
Tells You Everything You Need to Know!, 31 Oct 2007
I bought this book when I got engaged and was bored of really expensive, overpriced, repeitive wedding magazines.
It really does tell you everything you need to know - especially the bride and groom, but also the whole wedding party including all the parents and best man.
What I especially found useful was all the advice on planning the day - practicalities, timigs, all the little things no one else tells you! And the pictures are fabulous and really inspriational.
Perfect wedding stuff!

Either for yourself or as a present for your friend who gets married, 19 May 2008
It is a fabulous book.
A book to own because it is so beautiful.
It has great pictures and for each topic some hints and tips.
It is well made and it is like an art book. You can just look through it and enjoy the pictures. You can take more time and read the text - it has a personal touch of Vera Wang (references to weddings she has been / seen, things she pays attention to when making dresses etc. but it is not a promotion of Vera Wang products) and gives you practical tips of what you should not forget or might want to consider.
It covers the big things like wedding location and stationary, the ceremony music, the cake, ..... and the small details like the wedding garter.
And a big section of wedding dresses and veils, shoes, beauty, ....
It is a book I would strongly recommend to buy.
For yourself or for your best friends when they start the planning of their wedding.

What a fantastic book, a must have for anyone getting married.
Myriad Shades of White - Vera Wang on Weddings, 17 Feb 2004
This book rates highly on my list of "Secret Single Behaviours" (Sex and the City fans will understand this one). Kept hidden on the top shelf of my wardrobe, away from the prying eyes of a committment phobic boyfriend, it is an ultimate daydream book, to be savoured on my own for moments of escapism and fantasy. The book is a beautifully-dressed window into the world of the elegant society wedding, where brides are graceful, grooms rich and handsome, venues extravagently appointed, flower arrangements gargantuan and effusive, and tables linen clad and ladenwith lead crystal glasses and sterling silver cutlery. Beautifully constructed and photographed with transparent overlays gracing some of the pages, this book meets all the aesthetic standards expected from the world's leading wedding dress designer. Vera Wang lovingly and with extraordinary sensitivity and attention to detail leads you through each step of a wedding, covering proposal, gift registery, ceremony, table settings and of course, the all important selection and fitting of the dress. The book affords glimpses of high profile weddings that manage to juxtapose the formal grandour of Occasion with touching intimate moments. One picture depicts a famous bride, bathed in early morning sunshine, hair immaculately coiffed, high heels and stockings in place, stepping into her Vera Wang gown ready to transform, chrysalis-like, into a Bride. Surprisingly, it is not an overt advert for Vera Wang couture, although it did have me rushing to the store. Rather, it is a sharing of experience and beauty from a woman for whom weddings are such a precise art that each season she creates several new shades of white.
EXCELLENT!, 15 Mar 2002
Everything you need to know to help plan your wedding day - from flowers to invitations, from length of veil to lighting in the church. A really useful guide full of little hints and ideas. Well worth every penny!

excellent all rounder, 27 Jul 2005
if you have little emotion, and intend to churn out a text book speech [that most guests will have heard before in a slightly different format] this IS NOT the book you. If you want to project yourself as confident, clear, interesting, humorous and sensitive to the true meaning of the day whilst entertaining the assembled guests, buy it. My speech went down a storm, because it was written from the heart following the simple guidelines within this excellent and very accessible book. If that isn't for you, do it the easy way, though don't expect the plaudits.
Don't Go There! Shop Around!!!, 10 Sep 2001
I did not get any value from this book at all. It was slow, boring and did not add anything to my speech preparation. After reading this I thought it was targeted at an older audience. It was way out of touch with todays 'Best Man' much the same as one of my Dad's cardigans! If you wanna play safe so not to offend anyone, buy this, write your speech and watch as the guests fall asleep as you deliver it! Not for anyone with a pulse or a Best Man who would not like wedding cake being thrown at him!

Packed with good information for such a small book, 12 Feb 2008
I have given this to my fiance's best man but have read it first. My fiance's best man has never been a best man before and so hasn't got a clue. This little book has a lot of useful information for a best man to be and it was very informative for me as well, the bride to be. The information is in a basic list format so it's easy to read and absorb. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of getting married and who has an inexperienced best man.

An excellent book. My dad would be first to admit that he isn't a naturally gifted public speaker and he's a bit nervous at times. But after reading this book he did a brilliant job for me on my Big Day! He was so relaxed and he got the balance between humour and seriousness spot on. I can't recommend this book too highly ... it's brilliant!
This book is a must for any Dad about to give away his daughter, especially if he's not used to public speaking, or just totally overwhelmed about the do's and don't's of making a wedding speech. appallingly bad, 12 Aug 2006

Insightful, informative, and comical, 13 May 1999
I gave this book to all of my bridesmaids and they were all greatful. All of them wanted to know exactly how they could be of service to me as a bride, but it was hard to articulate. This book tells them everything they need to know. It is a must have! It is also a good read for all brides so that they know what they can expect from their attendants.

Very Clear and Informative, 06 Feb 2000
I thought that this book was very clear and easy to follow, at a time when you need as much help as is available to you. I am planning my wedding for September of this year (2000) and with all the ideas I have running through my mind there are lots of ideas and pointers within the book to follow which I feel will make my special day even more memorable.
PERFECT PRE-WEDDING GIFT, 03 Aug 1999
Can't think of a better gift to give a nervous bride. Excellent how to information for all her bridesmaids. A good bonding experience.
GREAT, INFORMATIVE, FUNNY, 24 Jul 1999
I am too busy preparing for my wedding, but all I can say is that this is A GREAT GIFT for all my bridesmaids. Very fun. Buy it in bulk.
EXCELLENT, WELL-WRITTEN, VERY FUNNY, 29 May 1999
THE PERFECT GIFT. Gave to my cousin the beautiful bride. She said it was right on the money, lots of great, practical ideas plus really really funny. Down to earth advice, just an excellent handbook.
Essential for any Bridesmaid!, 04 May 1999
This book is awesome! A must-have if you are going to be in a wedding! It contains many helpful tips on etiquette and ideas for the bridal shower. It's a fun book to read and very useful!
Highly amusing, 21 Jun 2008
Highly amusing little book - written in all seriousness in 1936 but very Cholmondley-Warner-esque in its outdated attitudes. This book is going to provide some gems for some light-hearted ribbing in my groom's speech when I get married shortly.
Note that this book is clearly based on the earlier Don'ts for Wives, rewording the material of that work whilst adding some new stuff, so there is a lot of duplication between the two. The versions in the older work tend to be more amusing to my taste however - the versions in this newer book sometimes seem a little clumsy through having been reworded for the sake of rewording. Worth having both.

This book is a must for any Dad about to give away his daughter, especially if he's not used to public speaking, or just totally overwhelmed about the do's and don't's of making a wedding speech. appallingly bad, 12 Aug 2006
Vera Wang Wedding Book, 25 Sep 2007
I brought this for a friend and she loves it. This is not a wedding book which tells where to save the money. This is a more luxury wedding book and has fantastics tips for people who need a little more expert help.
Verg Wang on Weddings, 23 Jun 2004
Beautifully constructed and photographed with tr | | |
