Very weak on international law, 17 Oct 2008
Ok on basic UK law but incredibly weak on international law including errors (The Inter-American system of Human Rights does not just cover South America. It covers all member states of the OAS including in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America, with differences depending on whether the American Convention has been ratified or not). Oxford - and lawyers - should not be so lazy.
Excellent, 25 Mar 2008
I have studied all aspects of Tort, Family, Business, Criminal, Property, Land, Contract Law and Civil and Criminal Litigation at Level 3 and every word I have wanted to look up has been in this dictionary. It has been my life line throughout my studies. A must have for all law students at every level.
Excellent for Uni Students (Year 1 and 2), 26 Jan 2008
I have just started my LLB(Hons) OU Law course and have used this many times. Great for any student studying Law at GCSE or LLB.
Great Stuff!!!
Love it!!!!!, 10 Jan 2008
No law student should be without a law dictionary... I bought this one last September because the last edition couldn't take another year of use!
Use my dictionary all the time, first place I go for every form of work!
Not so useful for Scottish Law Students, 14 Dec 2007
Hmm... The differences in terminology between the Scots and English Law systems is very evident in this book. I've owned it for 18 months, and more often than not it doesn't have what I need.
There are better (free!) online legal dictionary services.

Excellent, 30 Nov 2006
I am a Paramedic & find this to be an invaluable reference that is small enough to be carried around. It explains things clearly & simply, so would also be useful for the layperson.
A good introduction but I'm sure there are better out there, 16 Aug 2006
I am presently studying a Pitmans Medical Secretarial and Audio Transcription course and was given this dictionary as part of my course.I already have a knowledge of (human) biology so know a lot of the terminology and their meanings but am obviously coming across a lot of terminology I am not familiar with and which are not in the book but their abbreviations are. This I am finding confusing because I am not sure if the abbreviation has the same meaning as the word I am meant to use and find myself a majority of the time 'googling' for the word and terminology or using an online medical dictionary which at times does not have the words I am looking for either. There are a lot of words missing that I feel should be there such as 'radius' and 'ulna' and other body parts and there are words in the dictionary I personally don't think should be there such as 'cyberstalking' and 'e-mail'.The advantage with this book is its size and the hardwearing plastic cover-a good size for both the pocket and bag but I am sure there are other and better medical dictionaries available which I myself will look for.I have given this book 3 out 5 because it is a good introduction if a person is starting out as either a medical secretary or in the medical profession but I would strongly recommend looking for and purchasing a better medical dictionary, even if it is larger than this particular book.Hopefully the 25th edition will be better revised.
Bailliere's Nurses Dictionary, 07 Dec 2005
As an Occupational Therapist of many years I still constantly come across terminology that leaves my head spinning! This dictionary is invaluable in helping me to understand what problems some of my clients might face thus helping me to help them. I find that my students also find it useful.
A god send!, 02 Jan 2005
I bought this because I am doing a reflexology course and found that some words in my anatomy and physiology books just dont make sense! This is an absolute god send, it explains words in laymans terms. I dont know what I would have done without it.
Even us scientists need help!, 12 Jul 2004
As a Biomedical scientist working in a medical laboratory, you will often find yourself coming across terms that are either new to you or which you know but do not fully understand. A copy of Baillierie's Nurses' Dictionary was purchased for me at Christmas and I can trully say that it has been the most useful present, which I have received. There are still some terms missing, which would come in useful but I'm sure will be added in future editions, but for the size of book has an amazing amount of content with the addition of some useful appendices. Recommended for nurses and anyone who needs to come to terms with medical terminology (including scientists).

SUPERB dictionary - buy it now!, 19 Jul 2008
This is an absolutely superb dictionary and it's 'colour' element really helps with finding entries and makes it all a little more interesting! Headings are all written in red with descriptions in black and there are a few illustrations - but only where necessary. Incidentally the 'hardback' is actually a soft, tactile, plastic which makes it lighter and somehow much more pleasing to hold! Would recommend this dictionary!

A must have, pocket sized reference, 20 May 2008
Having never seen any other edition of the Midwives Dictionary, I have nothing to compare this to. This has all the terms that you are ever likely to come across in a midwifery situation and some definitions come with diagrams, which help to back up the definition.
There are also appendices at the back with various charts and diagrams.
This is a great reference guide that fits nicely in your pocket and good when you need to know something in a hurry.
very useful, 08 Mar 2004
I will be a student midwife as of june 2004 and have already bought this book. It is easy to use and understand and is a must for all midwives.
The midwives Bible!, 14 Mar 2001
This dictionary is a must have for every midwife! Whether you are a student or a fully qualified midwife, this dictionary is SUPERB! It contains up to date definitions and explanations of all things related to midwifery, and there is even a section at the back of the dictionary containing a whole heap of useful information that is used in everyday practice. This section includes the Bishops score, the normal pregnant blood values, the obstetric instruments used for any midwifery related procedure, graphs for bilirubin levels and much much more! Honestly, the list of things that they have included in this book is endless! They have even made it a reasonable size so that it is small enough to fit in the bag along with all the other gadgets that we have to carry around (any fellow midwives out there will know what I mean!!) This book is a must have-well worth buying.

Extremely useful for a Medical Secretary, 26 Aug 2008
This dictionary is very useful. As a "new" medical secretary, it was rarely out of my hands! It gives just a teeny bit of background to the words you're using and provided me with some insight into the conditions I was typing letters about.
I'd say it was a clear and practical guide. I'm sure there are probably more detailed and more "picturesque" medical dictionaries about, but for me it was excellent value and I wouldn't change jobs without it!
just enough depth, 08 Apr 2008
This dictionary provides an understandable and informative description of over eleven thousand entries. In contrast to other dictionaries the editor really managed to avoid the tendency to give too much or too detailed information. It offers interesting facts with just enough depth and, although concise, it only very rarely happened to me to not find the entry I was looking for. Really worth purchasing when starting medical studies although later on other resources will become necessary.
Great dictionary, very useful for dental students too, 27 Nov 2007
This dictionary has been an invaluable source of information throughout my time as a dental student. It explains medical and dental terms with clarity and enough depth if you just want a basic idea of what a particular term means. It hasn't let me down so far! :)
It does what it says on the tin!, 02 Aug 2006
This is a very plain book with only a handful of diagrams, it is jsut a dictionary. I find it very useful as a massage therapist to look up what clients are telling me to help me to choose an appropraite course of massge for them. If you want something with loads of pretty diagrams this is not the one for you: if you just want the definition of a medical term and a brif explanation, then this book is very good.
Great source of reference, 08 Jan 2005
As a medical secretary I find this book easy to use and very useful. There aren't many occasions when the word I am looking for is not in here. Good explanations, so good infact that the other secretaries often borrow it!

Awesome!!, 04 Aug 2008
An incredible amount of information packed with superb photos makes the last edition of the "Bible" a compulsory reading for growers and an interesting and funny one for the general public.
As an indoor grower I've found an answer to every single question arised while growing in this book, everything is covered : lamps, soils, seeds, hash making, how to make and mend many things, ....Besides the quality and number of photos makes the reading enjoyable and helps to understand key matters in an easy way.
The only suggestion I will make is that for future editions you may consider to include a chapter on specific matters on how to grow in a Home-box. An increasing number of people living in flats tends to use this options rather than filling a complete room with girls for practical reasons ( mainly lack of space ). With a chapter dealing with this the book would just be outstanding.
my review, 03 Mar 2008
this is the one of very few grow books that is suitable for seasoned growers as well as beginners. no poncy terminology either just written in plain English on nice professional glossy pages. really does explain everything you need to know to get a great grow going. photos on every page, packed full of useful information without all the packing drivvle that a lot of grow books have. i bought this ages ago and i still go back to it when i need to find something out. its all laid out nicely so it can be use again for reference easily. i own loads of grow books and this one is the best by far. if your looking to buy a grow book and you havnt got this one yet, get this one now, you will not be disappointed
SUPERB - a must buy, 06 Nov 2007
If you're going to buy one grow book THIS IS IT! While it lacks some sepcific details you may want (e.g. blueprints for cabinets) and suffers from some bad editing, typesetting and occasional misprints it is TRULY SUPERB. The best problem/solution diagnosis section of any book (which CAN save your grow!), loads of colour, well organised incredibly thorough. You will be ready to grow at the end of this - but you may be hungry for more! I'd recommend Greg Green as the perfect partner, and getting online!!!

A sticky green-thumbs up for Jorge!, 30 Mar 2006
This new edition of the growers bible has definitely made a giant leap in quality. The vast and well researched information has been made comprehensible and pleasantly visual thanks to a fun, clear narration sided by numerous color diagrams and images. Not only does it help you step by step in understanding the plant and its cultivation but also gives you oodles of practical advice only on-hands experience can provide. Excellent and very informative guide in an easy-to-read and visually explanatory method of transmitting the multitude of information needed in a growers manual.

Most Used Book, 27 May 2003
I am studying for a degree in Equine Science and I use this book all the time. It offers definitions which are detailed but easily understood. Definately worth its money

Good little book..., 28 Apr 2005
Reviewing this from the perspective of a lay reader who just wants to understand better how economic forces work (or don't work} this is a well put together and well written work. The cross referencing helps to understand some of the more obscure concepts and the style is crisp and clear throughout. The price is good too. Another winner from the Penguin Reference shelf...
Comprehensive, but with some minor flaws, 18 Jan 2004
Coverage of economic theory, common statistical knowledge, and widely used economics concepts, among other things, is fairly comprehensive and complete. However, a couple of important entries are missing. For example, there is no items on the subject of leading, lagging and coincident indicators, diffusion and composite indexes, all of which are key to following economic discussions. On the other side, there is only so much one can pack into less than 500 pages.
Excellent summary of economic terms for students, 21 Nov 2000
A useful tool for first time economics or business studies students. Explains theories and models in basic terms. I have also read the Collins equivalent, and believe that this Penguin version is more accessible to those new to the topic. I will certainly be recommending this dictionary to my students! For in depth information text books are more appropriate, however as a quick reference guide this is useful.

BIBLE, 13 Sep 2007
Say no more. If you are growing this is what you need, it helps so much and gives you secrets which you would take years to find out by yourself.
Buy it NOW!!!
Indispensible, 09 Sep 2008
This is THE book for veterinary medicine. You'll never have it far from you when studying. There's a newer version now. See no difference really except for a few pictures, and it is more cumbersome. Studying side by side with a friend, we've yet to find an entry in one that is not in the other.
This is my top rated book so far. I love it.
What a must have!!, 23 Feb 2004
I've had this dictionary since it was first published, and it has been WELL worth it and has been invaluable to me right through my biology a-levels to now being in my second year of a degree in animal management, it is never far from my side when I'm doing an assignment, and without it I'm lost, whether its to find proper definitions for a quote or to check something it is just sooo handy, both for my course and as a serious pet owner, trying to decipher some of the technical terms used in articles and textbooks. Overall, I can't fault it, and I can't see myself ever wanting to part with my copy!
Most Used Book, 27 May 2003
I am studying for a degree in Equine Science and I use this book all the time. It is the most used on my bookshelf for my assignments and I have also found it useful for refering to when revising or need something explained. It offers definitions which are detailed but easily understood. Definately worth its money
Excellent!!, 30 Oct 2001
Not only is this book useful as a dictionary, is also a great reference for quick additional pieces of information. I find myself refering to it often while I am doing a piece of work. One of the most useful Veterinary books I have purchased so far!
I have also read the Collins equivalent, and believe that this Penguin version is m | | |
