Another win for clear and simple, 14 Apr 2008
This is just as good as his Digital Camcorder book - which is very good indeed. They work well together, and they're cheap enough that you could afford both.
He uses a variety of editing software as illustration, so it's not aimed at any one of them. In doing this, he makes it much easier for you to work out for yourself what to do.

I was very disappointed to find that this book is not compatable with Premier Elements 4 and I had to return it.
There was already a return form in the book from a previous customer who had the same problem!
Please put the book description right.
Brilliant, 03 Jun 2005
This book is well worth a look and your money, it explains everything in detail with simple to follow instructions. It covers every part of Premiere elements from importing your footage to exporting it onto DVD and other formats. It gives you ideas on what requirements and equipment you should/could use to improve your films, and also a small part on shooting the film itself. It explains about transitions, all the different effects, how to find commands and editing windows, about the timelines, sound, editing in general and everything you could possibly think of and more. I highly recommend this book, and will be buying more from the series. It's the only book on adobe premeire elements you will ever need!!
Adobe Premiere Elements for Dummies, 11 Jan 2005
Well done Adobe for bringing out such an excellent program and well done to the author Keith Underdahl for this easy to follow and fun to use book. I gave up on Pinnacle Studio a while ago due to it constantly crashing and thus was excited about Premiere Elements and have now followed the chapters through and can say my editing skills have advanced considerably. This is my second "Dummies" book, the first was Macromedia Dreamweaver MX for Dummies,on the strength of that book I bought Premiere Elements, need I say more ?

I repeat - do yourself a favour and buy this book!
Pinnacle Studio 11 Manual by Jan Ozer, 16 Dec 2007
Jan has done it again for Pinnacle Studio users! The manual can be used as bedtime reading or left on the shelf until you have a problem, then just look it up. I prefer the former as Jan gets into the nuts and bolts of Pinnacle and his style of writing makes it feels like he is sat in the room with you.
I always make a point of buying a 3rd party manual for my video editing programs as the user manuals only contain the bare essentials to get you started. However this one is the best.
Jan uses his own experiences to demonstrate the the workings of Pinnacle Studio 11 and yes, Ultimate is also included. Even Pinnacle didn't cover Moving Picture, Sound Soap and Vitascene in the Ultimate user manual!
This is my second Jan Ozer manual and it is excellent!

A disappointing book which I didn't really find that readable or of much help to me even as a beginner. Too general.
Good Starter, 27 Dec 2003
This book is a good starter for beginers, it style is freindly and it expains the basic fundamantals to get going. For those who have just purchased a dv camera this is a must, more experienced users however, will probably not gain much.

Teach Yourself Premiere Pro by Jeff Sengstack, 29 Nov 2006
I have a lot of expereience using video cameras and editing using SVHS tape as the source material. I bought this book to help me make the jump to using DV digital tape. I usually know that buying a guidebook to any software package involves getting used to searching the book for what you need to know, and ending up using the Internet. Not so with Jeff Sengstack's book. This book is the best guide book I have ever read for any software package! Not only is it easy to understand but is a real pleasure to read. The book is one of the Sams Teach Yourself series and is the best I have read of those in the series. I think this is due to Jeff's wide ranging experience. He is not only a great writer but has the benefit of being a professional in the field. If you are new to video editing or a beginner who could do with advice on how to get the best footage from your camcorder you'll find almost everything you need in this book. If like me you are experienced you will also gain benefit from Jeff's experience as a journalist and TV editor and photographer. And even if you are happy to use a computer, this book will provide all the information and advice in choosing a suitable computer or upgrading your existing one. There's even advice on choosing an external microphone for getting better audio.
I throughly recommend this book. In future I will look out for other books written by Mr. Sengstack

Does exactly what it says on the tin - this book got a total video-editing virgin (aka dummy) such as myself up to speed and confident with all but the most obscure corners of Premiere within a couple of days. Highly recommended. Excellent reference book, 31 Jul 2003
The style might be a little bit too friendly for me, but the subject matter is covered well. I especially like the suggestions for other gadets to make life easier... now if someone would buy me one of those USB jog dial thingies... Despite it being a "dummies guide", it's not half as patronising as I thought it would be, and gets pride of place next to the PC when I'm doing any editing.
Not a duming down, 26 Nov 2002
I bought both this and the "Premier Bible". I'm half way through "Dummies" and thinking I might never need to open the latter. This book goes deep enough into Premier. Any deeper would be confusing. This is not a superficial text.

clear helper to your goal, 04 Jun 2007
This book is a well organised, reasonably priced and clear exposition of what Roxio 8 can do for you in terms of burning DVD's and CD's. With this book you can learn to use photo-editing software, create computer backups, create mp3 CD's and DVD's, manipulate '`AVI''- files in terms of both the picture editing and sound manipulation. You can create data -DVD's which is so easy. The list is great for an amateur and you can get the suite to install.
If you can move from 'Roxio Easy Media Creator (7)' to version 8, this edition is much better to use, and it's more capable. So its not unreasonable to suggest you may need a bit of guidance to help?
I recommend reading it from cover -to -cover at least twice before undertaking a project. Then read what you want to do a few times before using it to guide you and then use the book to 'zoom-in' to that which you really want. The plentiful supplies of pictures in the book are B&W screen-shots but are clear enough to help you see what's going on.
For example, the mine of information shows the following as an example of what's available, albeit you sometimes need to read it a few times to get it. After rendering `AVI' videos or jpeg pictures with 'Videowave' you can use `MyDVD' to create DVD's to store these projects on. This time with Roxio 8, unlike Roxio 7, I learned that the main menu title background is restricted to a series of customisable templates, with restricted menus access (say just up and looped back to the beginning again). I found out with this book, when you trial the menus with 'preview' in 'MYDVD', you need to rearrange the titles by trial- and -error until the menus work in sequence you want. Also I learned with this book its required to make all the menu titles on these templates the same length in the number of characters used, else you will not be able to access them. It's so easy when you know how!
I feel this book is cheaper than ringing 'Roxio' helping lines. Also if you out for a learning curve, it will try and help you create say photo-archives, movie DVD's and others which the less-technically minded members of your relatives tend to enjoy. Although Roxio 8 this may not the most technically competent Media editing software there is on the market, it can help you create memories using family photographs of times sorely missed often by those no longer here.

He uses a variety of editing software as illustration, so it's not aimed at any one of them. In doing this, he makes it much easier for you to work out for yourself what to do. Poor description, 27 Jun 2008
Brilliant!, 12 Sep 2008
If you buy Pinnacle Studio 11 or 12, you must buy this book. It explains everything in clear concise details, but is easy to understand.
IT'S FOR DUMMIES, 15 Dec 2007
Easy to follow, 13 Jul 2004
Great guide for beginners to pick up the basics of final cut express. May be a bit simple for users wishing to do more advanced things. A great starting point tho!
Sengstack Good beginners introduction, 16 Oct 2003
Dissapointing, 27 Sep 2007
Whilst this book has value it is very poorly presented. For someone operating in an iLife environment you would expect the publishers to have been creative in terms of how it is viewed. Weighty, lots of words and lacks flow. As a PC switcher I crave simplicity, something this book did not deliver. I would recommend for the new entrant to iMovie and iDVD to try 'The Macintosh iLife06' by Jim Heid which is so easy to read and understand.
Quite simply - it gets you started, 17 Jul 2006
Whilst iMovie might not be the most difficult of programs to figure out, this book helps you obtain useful results quickly. The writer approaches the software in a real-to- life manner and I have to admit actually enjoying reading this 'manual'. If you want to get started editing your camcorder footage, read this before you move onto Final Cut. (Shame David Pogue hasn't yet written a book about this application as well ;-)

Dummies Could Do More!, 23 Dec 2004
A good reference book for the beginner - well laid out and easy to follow. However, pity they didn't read "Proofreading for Dummies" before publishing...the "Cheat Sheet" has incorrect chapter references and the first section I read (creating audio CDs) referred me to a Figure drawing which had nothing at all to do with the particular sub-topic and the correct Figure described in the text was nowhere to be found. This book could also benefit from a troubleshooting section at the end of each chapter (ie if something doesn't work here's some things to check) - something I'm sure new users would appreciate. The author certainly knows the product and I think that causes him to miss out some of the very basic practical advice on things that beginners wouldn't know eg: it's best to use a CD-R disc for creating audio CDs to play on stand alone CD players rather than a CD-RW disc even though the Roxio software clearly indicates you can use a CD-RW disc (CD-RW discs won't work on many home/car CD players). But gripes aside I found the book very useful and a worthwhile addition to my bookshelf.
