Excellent potter's book, 15 Nov 2008
Here is a book that will not fail to satisfy. As a potter, I have read many books on the subject and if you only intend to buy one book on the subject, this would be a good one to buy.
It is beautifully presented, packed full of useful information and well illustrated with examples of work from some of the best in their field. It not only looks good, but it comes up with the goods. It is indeed a complete reference, a definitive guide taking you through all the processes from choosing clay to the finished product whether you wish to make pots by hand or throw them on a wheel. I believe beginners and experienced potters alike will find this mine of information of use. Learn how to pinch, coil and slab-build. See how to throw a teapot, how to create large structures and how to use or create moulds. Find out how to furnish a studio and what equipment to buy.
This easy to follow, how-to-guide covers many types of surface decoration techniques that are good to have on hand. The practical information is backed up by design ideas and inspiration. This beautiful and well-thought out book really is my favourite book on pottery. It is very favourably priced too. A wonderful book, 30 Aug 2007
This is a wonderful book for those new to pottery. It presents a wealth of information about different techniques and aspects of ceramics alongside a fantastic selection of work by ceramic artists. My ceramic bible!!, 04 Apr 2006
This book has an incredible amount of information ranging from tools, basic techniques to alternative firing and kilns. This book has been so helpful to me as a student focusing on experimental work and new methods of decorating and gets your imagination going and motivation to create a new piece day in day out. I would recommend this book to new students and professionals alike. It is so good my university tutor looked through it and bought one of her own! Mum's the word., 04 Sep 2004
I bought this as a birthday present for my mother who has gone totally potty over pottery at the moment. She's been attending night classes for a while so I didn't want to get her anything too basic, more something to inspire her own ventures. I think what swung it for me were the photographs. This book is packed with ideas from total beginner to commercial expert, but the photographs are brilliant. They really get the imagination going and she didn't put it down for over a day. A really good gift for anyone who is in to pottery, something that can always be referred to in the future. Marion.

I purchased this book about 5 years ago and I still refer to it. It has a vast amount of information about ceramic techniques. Anyone interested in ceramics would benefit from this book. I don't rate books 5 stars unless they are fantastic and this book definately deserves all 5 stars!
Great book!, 25 Oct 2007
It's the best book about ceramics that I bought. It has examples of many different kinds of surfaces. I think it's a book anyone of ceramic's world should have.
What a buy!, 04 Apr 2006
I was in a ceramic book buying mood a while back and I think I bought about 3. I'm interested in textures and new methods of decorating. I thought this book was fantastic in supplying me with plenty of ideas to try and used many as a starting block for new techniques. It covers basic and modern techniques as well as other aspects of ceramics. A must for those studying, interested or working in ceramics!
Great Inspiration!, 22 Feb 2004
Bought this book recently and would recommend it to anyone involved in ceramics. It gives clear, concise, up to date information on lots of ways to texture and decorate your work and great illustrations provide lots of inspiration. Well worth the money, the type of book you can revisit time and time again.
a book for all abilities, 07 Oct 2003
I recently purchased this book, and took it into college to show my colleagues - it covers so many techniques, with clear, colour photos and shows a huge range of contemporary works to demonstrate different effects. I've since bought a further copy from Amazon at the request of the college, and now three other students have asked me to get the book for them next time I order from Amazon!! It's a great book to browse through on the sofa of an evening, and to inspire one to have a go at something new.

Miller's Pottery & Porcelain Marks, 18 Mar 2004
This book was ok. Bit difficult to plough through to find specific items but useful once you managed it. Didn't give much information on the marks though.
An interesing book a must for all pottery collectors, 09 Dec 2001
I am an avid pottery and porcelain collector and have found this book very informative and easy to understand.I use it regularly to validate potters marks and symbols when I visit antiques fairs. It is not a chunky book so it is portable, and the marks are simply catalogued so that you can look them up quickly. An excellent reference book.

you need to own this book, 14 Sep 2007
I have been fortunate enough to meet with Carolyn Genders and watch her work, she is an inspiration and loves sharing her way of working. Carolyn's book is simply a must have for anyone interested in making ceramics it encourages you to look at things around you in a different way, and by documenting anything that takes your fancy or catches your eye carolyn's book shows how to use that in your work by example. her photographs and sketchs are amazing, if you get a chance to meet with her in person and do a workshop you will be amazed at what she will encourage in you. this is a beautiful well thought out book which will inspire any artist who owns it.
A Great Source, 19 Feb 2003
This is not only a great source of inspiration for artists but also a fantastic eye opener and education for those who want to be enthused by every day life. It is a "must have" for anyone who is looking but not seeing what they are looking at. Personally my favorite part of the book refers to reflections. In every lake, pond, puddle and sink of water I now see the reflections that Carolyn refers to as full of mystery and promise, and understand the atmosphere and moods that are created by the mirror image. How these are then transfered onto the beautiful pots in her work is fascinating. A clever combination of Carolyn Genders inspiration for her work and also her obvious passion for life makes this book a one off and I would recommend it to anyone from any walk of life.

A MUST-HAVE BOOK...., 29 Aug 2006
If you go round car boot sales or antiques fairs or surf on Ebay and are interested in 20th century glass you really HAVE to buy this book. The photography is wonderful and unlike most other books which concentrate on the high end stuff you never can find, Andy McConnell includes the type of thing you really will find when you are out and about. He has gone back to the factory archives too so many previously unrecorded pieces are now identified. This really is a wonderful book and who knows, you might recoup the cost of it with your first find!

perfect for first time users!!, 02 Jan 2007
when i read the instructions and learnt all of the different techniques for my course, i was amazed at the simplicity shown to me in this book. i feel that it is a good all round book, and the advice on some of the techniques is brilliant! i want more!!
Good information and tips for the potter moving away from conventional kilns, 19 Jul 2006
This book offers a multitude of tips, photos and help with saggar, raku, barrel and pit firings. It also has recipes for glazes, terra sigillata and includes advice on burnishing that is more detailed and sophisticated than other books I have encountered.
I found this book so full of well-written advice and easy to follow steps that it has inspired me to try some of them out. Few books have this effect on people so I would recommend it without reservation.

Marion.
Excellent....great value for money., 08 Jun 2008
It's OK but not fantastic and worth 5 stars!, 07 Apr 2008
The quality of the book is not fantastic, it's so thick a hardback copy would be much more suitable. There is a rich diversity of work throughout the book with each piece having one photograph, these are of good quality. Some of the artists are represented intermittantly throughout the book rather than being grouped together, which I founbd a little annoying as I would identify a piece of work I liked then 20 pages later find another piece and then realise it was the same artist. It does not give the reader a great insight into the inspiration and processes used to create the artwork. It is good book if you want to look at lots of pictures of sculptured animals rather than the meaning behind the piece of work.
Inspirational pictures, 17 Mar 2008
This is a wonderful book for those who need some inspiration and some ideas.
Wonderful pictures.
The artwork is funny, extraordinary and sometimes scary. I couldn't belive that people could make such a fantastic work with just a ball of clay.
Clay has no limit that's for sure.
This is a perfect book at the cheramic studio or in a creative home, or just for fun.
Buy it and become creative!!

Making Glass Beads - Cindy Jenkins, 23 Apr 2007
This is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to try their hand at lamp-working. I bought this book as a novice to the subject, and am still referring back to the fabulous illustrations and easy to follow instructions. Jam-packed with 'Hot Tips', design ideas and techniques for all levels, this truly is the lamp-worker's bible!
Brilliant!, 14 May 2002
I would really recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Glass beads. The illustrations are amazing and the step by step instructions are really clear. It is insprirational!!
The best instruction book for beginners., 06 Apr 1999
This is the book I recommend in my glass bead making classes. There are pictures with each set of instructions so you can see, as well as read, how to do it. It covers all of the techniques necessary to make the most simple to the most complex glass bead imaginable. Definitely a "must have" book for the new (and not so new) bead maker.
Excellent book for people who have never worked with glass, 27 Mar 1999
Cindy Jenkins has done a wonderful job with this book. It teaches you step by step from the very beginning. This book will show you what you need and where you need to get it. It will then show you how to make great beads. Numerous techniques are very well illustrated. I started out with no knoweledge of glass whatsoever, but now with the help of Cindy's book, I can make beautiful glass beads. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get their foot in the door to the world of glass.
A beautiful and thorough reference, 11 Apr 1998
Cindy Jenkin's book is truly a work of art as well as a detailed instruction guide. I was drawn to the book by it's exquisite photographs and inspired to try lampwork by the thorough explanations and instructions. I was fortunate to take a beadmaking class with Cindy and her book is a wonderful reference guide! It's so beautiful that I enhance the decor in my home by using it as a "coffee-table" book.

A comprehensive & accessible guide to creating stained glass, 15 Nov 2000
I thoroughly enjoyed looking at this book as well as working from it as it contains some beautiful pieces of art that really inspired me. The instructions and advice were clear and helpful giving useful tips on working with such a volatile material. I was easily able to create several of the items in the book on my own. It gave a brief but fascinating history of stained glass and its origins as well as looking at the differences between antique stained glass and what we use today. The only criticism was that some of the equipment and coloured glass was quite expensive and difficult to track down but the book does try and advise where it is best to look. Really, after looking at other books on stained glass I was very impressed with the diversity of this one, it really covers all aspects of the art being practical as well as interesting.

This book is packed with ideas from total beginner to commercial expert, but the photographs are brilliant. They really get the imagination going and she didn't put it down for over a day. A really good gift for anyone who is in to pottery, something that can always be referred to in the future. Marion.
Excellent....great value for money., 08 Jun 2008
A Great Buy, 23 Jul 2008
This is a great book. I almost didn't buy it as it's only 64 pages long and I thought it couldn't really cover the subject in much detail (the other good reviews changed my mind). I was surprised at how much information is packed into this book. It covers all the main enamelling techniques in easy to follow projects. A perfect book for beginners.
Perfect start, 01 Jan 2007
This is a really excellent book, the projects are clear and informative and each one is well illustrated. It introduces a wide variety of techniques in a way that is easy to understand and shows inspiring pieces of work alongside. I would highly recommend this book
