Absolutely top of the bill!, 25 Aug 2008
I bought this book on first sight as the cover looked really good. And what a surprise to see it gets better after every page! This work is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. Such a pretty style, very creative and inspiring; this is really "it" for me. Recommended with a capital R! I look forward to her next book.
Mixed Media Explorations by Beryl Taylor, 16 Aug 2007
If like me you are looking for inspiration to create some thing new with your art work then I would certainly recommend this book. The designs Beryl Taylor has put together are very imaginative. Her step by step projects to help you are easy to follow also you are shown the smaller details close up which go into each design which I found very useful. In my view it is a superb book offering you an abundance of endless designs. So if you wish to boost your creativity then this is the book to buy.

Inspirational, 20 May 2007
This is a beautiful, beautiful book. I picked it up curiously in a bookstore the other day and from the moment I opened it I was hooked. I sat in the store for two hours looking through the whole thing from cover to cover.
It is full of glimpses into peoples lives, views of their joys and sorrows and their amazing creativity. There are all types of creations, some very simple, and some that are incredibly intricate and detailed, the one thing they have in common is that they are all stunning.
This is a book I am going to be buying for myself as soon as I can. It is pure inspiration.

Simply the best!, 19 May 2007
Having read the reviews by the other readers on this page I bought the book - and they were exactly right in what they say.
So many pictures to look at for inspiration and lots of "how to's" make this such a great reference book - if you are in any doubt about buying it, don't be - it really is brilliant and worth every penny!
It is certainly one of the best books in my vast book collection.

Full of excellent illustrations, ideas and inspiration for anyone interested in altered books and scrapbooks exciting and inspiring, 19 Jun 2008
I bought this book after running out of artistic energy and enthusiasm. I normally paint in a detailed and realistic style and wanted a change to see if I could get my interest back. It was one of my best ever book buys.
Full of different techniques and ideas, some I liked some I didn't but all have been fun and above all liberating to try. Much of it is very "hands on" and wonderfully messy with unpredictable outcomes. It put the fun and excitement back into my artwork. I may never be anything but a photorealist painter whenworking seriously but this book has been a star buy and is wholeheartedly recommended for artists of all stages. Taking the mystery out of creative textures, 23 May 2003
A beautiful book. Well written with easy to follow instructions for creating different textures, layering, composition etc. The whole book is colourful with plenty of step by step guidance for creating your own paintings. As a novice painter I have found this book hard to put down. Work your way through the book as the author advises, experimenting with each technique and easy to follow instructions. I can't praise this book enough - it's what I've been searching for. An excellent book for anybody stuck in an artistic rut., 05 Jun 2002
This is an excellent book for any person artistic or other that feels they have got stuck in an artistic rut. It gives lots of excellent new ideas for trying out different media, in ways perhaps you haven't thought of before. The excellent way the book is presented is sure to inspire any reader. It becomes inspiration for many ideas (without dictating what is right and what is wrong) and leaves you itching to get started. this book is all you need for a creativity explosion, 10 Jan 2002
I recomend this book for everyone who likes to explore and play with different art materials. It will surely take your creativity to a higer level. It will give you new ideas for your art expression. The photoes are beautiful and colourful, and makes you want to thouch the paintings and see if you can feel the structure. This book gave me more than I have got from all of my other books together. It is also very handy to use when you work

Every page a wonderfully witty surrealist delight, 11 Nov 2000
I wish I had found Tom Phillips' book sooner. Its title neatly describes what, verbally, he has done. He has dug into the text on each page of an extant Victorian novel, "A Human Document", sometimes obliterating all but the fragments he wants us to read, sometimes allowing us to make out more or less clearly their original context, in order to create a much odder narrative. On each page, the new texts are hilarious, surreal, poetic, quite often even absurdly and astonishingly moving, and, though the thread of a new tale emerges, these pages each have a life of their own. A new hero is created in the reshaping of the text: Bill Toge, his surname lifted from the word "together". As he moves through dooms of love, he encounters other characters, some of whom swim up to the new surface from the sunken original novel. But this is only the half of it: every page is also a little work of art, a visual treasure in its own right. Integrated with the work Phillips perfoms upon the text, are cross-hatchings, rich, delightful colour washes, subversively referential images and odd, sometimes comic and sugestive shapes. For all the joyous editing of the Victorian story, this is not a short book and one of its amazing strengths is its power, page by page, to find ways of sustaining its capacity to surprise and delight, verbally and visually. It will not wear out after one read, like so many essays into the comic in bound form. This is for everyone with a love of word-play, of poetry, of considered wit, and of the visually rich.

Great book, 21 Aug 2008
I bought this book after having seen the orignals at an expo in Vienna this year. Well worth the cash.
Provocative, evocative, brilliant., 22 Aug 1999
I found a copy of this in a museum in Berlin last year and not a day has gone by that I haven't opened it up to stare at the images and the mad, deliciously nightmarish stories they tell.

I loved this book, it is both inspirational and instructional. I continually go back to the book for ideas, inspiration and for practical help. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collage or making stuff for the pleasure and connection it brings them. Inspiring book, 22 Oct 2007
A dissenting voice?, 16 Sep 2008
The book is beautiful to look at, but I think I'm too old (26) for all this adolescent angst. However, it is very pretty and has inspired me aesthetically if nothing else. But it is very expensive! I regret buying it.

I bought this book on first sight as the cover looked really good. And what a surprise to see it gets better after every page! This work is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. If like me you are looking for inspiration to create some thing new with your art work then I would certainly recommend this book. The designs Beryl Taylor has put together are very imaginative. Her step by step projects to help you are easy to follow also you are shown the smaller details close up which go into each design which I found very useful. This is a beautiful, beautiful book. I picked it up curiously in a bookstore the other day and from the moment I opened it I was hooked. I sat in the store for two hours looking through the whole thing from cover to cover.

Inspires mythic imagination, 09 Jan 2008
Of the many delicious books on the market to inspire, this is one of my favourites. What makes this book stand out in my collection is that it is the only one that takes a deeper look into the artist's creative process. The layering of image, process, narrative, technique and personal anicdote in the layout is ingenious and best reflects de Meng's work. This isn't so much a "how to" - although it provides more than enough technique - but a journey into mythic imagination - where inspiration lies.
not what I expected, 27 Oct 2007
I was really disapointed in this having hoped for something to enable my art and inspire to create...not to copy but for impetus and ideas.
It was a lovely journey through this artists work but not sadly what I expected. I didn't even like it enough to add it to the many books in my collection.
Inspirational, beautifully illustrated, an absolute gem!, 28 Aug 2007
I received the Secrets of Rusty Things by Michael deMeng yesterday and finished reading it in one go. I couldn't put it down! It is beautifully illustrated, with sumptuous colours, very artfully put together, witty and humorous, and Michael's work is just brilliant! Each of the 10 pieces of Art created by Michael's talented hands, is preceeded by an explanation of the myth that the piece is based on. Also quirky but fun reading are the spiral-bordered asides, where Michael explains the where and how of finding materials to use, as well as his thought processes when creating a piece.
I absolutely and thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wishing to take their collage-making to a different level, or those wishing to explore the fascinating world of assemblage art. Lovers of Mexican art and the Day of the Dead Festival, take note - this book will inspire you too. An absolute gem of a book.

Very Useful, 13 Oct 2007
I bought this book to give me ideas on what to do with my old books, i do art at university and found this book really helpful!!! I can use the techniques to make my own sketch books from old novels. I find myself constantly looking back at the book for inspiration and techniques. This book has information on techniques, materials and artists. Very useful if you are doing book-making for artist info etc.
The only bad thing i can say is it shows you images of final pieces, does not show you the work in process, and doesn't actually show you how to book bind and construct the books. You only need to buy this book if your looking for inspiration and artist research.
More, please!, 03 Feb 2004
I discovered the art of altering books early last year when looking for some online collage resources. This is a great outlet for anyone's creativity, be they trained artist or, like me, complete amateur. Holly Harrison's book is a feast of techniques and, more importantly, inspiration. For anyone curious about this odd branch of art/collage/journalling, this book is a must. I would also recommend Gwen Diehn's "The Decorated Page" and "Making Journals By Hand" by Jason Thompson.
