great resource, 17 Nov 2006
I bought this as I'd pretty much exhausted the virtual pose books (also well worth buying) not really expecting it to be as good. In fact, in some ways it's actually better. The poses, like the VP ones, are viewable from all round (not quite 360 degrees in this book, it's more a progression of photos around the model. The image jumps between pictures rather than smoothly turns round. On the other hand, they are taken from higher and lower angles so you get different views to draw from.)and they are also higher definition than the VP ones. There's a reasonable selection of body types for the female models, though they tend towards the slim and people annoyed at the blurring of the female images in VP will be pleased to note it doesn't occur on these pictures. If I have any crititcism it would be that they could have had a few more non-caucasion models and possibly more useful poses, but if you want to practice your life drawing and there aren't any classes around, then this book or the Virtual Pose series are a good alternative.

A collectors edition. Don't miss., 02 Dec 2006
A worthy addition to anyone's bookshelf. Included are the likes of Marilyn, Naomi Campbell, Jayne Mansfield, Madonna, Pamela Anderson and many, many others. Admittedly some names have been left out but then again if all the celebs who have appeared within the pages of Playboy over the years were included the edition would have probably run into a second volume. Also some of the photos are not Playboy originals such as the famous upskirt shot of Sharon Stone and the photos of Bo Derek were apparently taken by her husband. But nevertheless, not to be missed.

Very helpful techniques!, 30 Sep 2008
As a lifelong fan of art that celebrates the human form, I have a great deal of personal expertise in the field of nude photography. However, after an unfortunate mix-up led to the seizure of my long-range lens, I recently decided that it might be nice to try my hand at nude drawings instead. This book seemed like a natural aid to the running over the basics, so I picked up a copy and began practising. Thanks to the diverse range of pencil techniques that are explained within, I was soon churning out naked sketches (some artistic, some just plain lewd!) by the dozen. Before long I felt ready to sign up for the weekly life drawing class that is held at our local Church Hall!
Not having much of an idea on what to expect, I attended my first class last month. With my previous drawings having been based solely upon my wife Doreen, the idea of receiving stimulation from an alternative body was most appealing. To be honest, it's inevitable that a chap will eventually grow weary of confining himself to just one woman (even if she does consent to being manoeuvred into a whole range of rather creative positions!). Anyhow, I'm pleased to say that Reverend Dalton's nineteen-year-old daughter Chastity did not disappoint. I hadn't felt such creativity surging through my loins for a long time! In fact, just half an hour into the class, I felt that there was little that could be added to improve my sketch. A substantial amount of the credit for this must be attributed to what I learned here (although it's also true to say that after having gotten used to evoking Doreen's colossal frame on paper, Chastity's slender body placed a rather less demanding workload on the pencils). Anyhow, with nothing else to do for the remainder of the class, I decided that I might as well try drawing my genitals. Admittedly this was a mistake, for almost immediately after making the 'draw' I had to holster them again- when the Reverend spotted what I was up to! As he always reminds us in his sermons- 'The devil makes work for idle hands'. A wise warning indeed!

This book gives great reference to artists and students studying the nude in history. I would also highly recommend this title to figure artists' who are 'stuck' in developing new style and technique.

Manoeuvres in the Dark, 17 Dec 2007
For many years, the female nude has been a favourite subject for artists. Painters, sculptors and more recently photographers have all taken up the challenge of trying to bring something new to this most classic yet timeless of themes.
"Distance Fades Between Us" is a series of black and white photographs of nude female models, usually appearing alone, but sometimes in pairs. The twist with this collection is that the photographs have been taken outside at night, adding a new dimension.
At their best, Tim Phillip's photographs contrast the form of the nude against the shapes in the darkness (tree stumps, monuments etc.) - sometimes this has an organic feel, with mud and leaves on the subject's body as well as on the ground. At other times the model is abstract, emotionless and cold, echoing the night in which she appears.
Even the most conventional images such as a young woman on the bonnet of a sports car are given fresh life by the unusual source of lighting or angle of shot.
This is an outstanding collection of interesting yet often sensual photographs, which should appeal to all fans of black & white photography who are seeking something a little off the beaten track.
Luminou Nudes in the Black of Night, 29 Nov 2007
Tim Phillips is a thinking man's photographer. The central idea behind this work is so simple, yet so pregnant with feeling. There is something about a beautiful, naked girl prancing about in the murky labyrinth of the night that inspires a distinct sense of tension. Her glowing, naked body stands in stark contrast to the blackness surrounding her. Feelings of beauty and desire mix with those of fear and repulsion. And it's this incongruity that propels the entire work. It's fascinating.
Excellent!, 28 Nov 2007
I've been a fan of Tim's photography for some time so it was great to see he was producing a book. It arrived this morning & first impressions are good. Beautiful models "enjoying" the countryside & cleverly lit in the dark of night.
It's great to see this type of photography book being published in the UK.
