Brilliant Boy from Birkenhead....Roll on book 2, 12 Oct 2008
Well What Can I say.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and ordered my copy from here to arrive on the day it was released.
Once I started I couldn't put this book down, From his times as an Altar Boy, to working in London to the sad ending that leaves you wanting to know more it's a must have for any fan.
Paul has wrote this in a way that makes it sound like he is with you reading it. Almost like you're transported into his world watching the happenings he describes.
10 out of 10 and get cracking on book number 2 Paul! Can't wait to hear about the adventures of Miss Savage!!!
Jesus Tonight, this is great!, 07 Oct 2008
Paul is at his funniest and best here. He tells us he was beaten by the priests at one of his schools, but god love im, he doesn't dwell on this like misery memoirs do, no, instead he soldiers on to the next funny bit.
I couldn't put it down and so I finished it quickly, so there had better be a sequel. I even thought up a title, 'At My Lover's Knee...and Other Low Joints'. Now THAT might top this!
Great !!!!, 07 Oct 2008
Wonderful, great, fantastic, LOVED IT !!!
Written with great humour,(laughed out loud reading the bush baby incident!!) but it's Paul's love for his family that really shines through. Can't wait until the next book, I'm just gagging to know more about this wonderful entertainer.
Three cheers for Mr Paul James O'Grady MBE.......... Hip Hip Hooray....
Amazing Amazing Amazing, 03 Oct 2008
Need I say anymore, buy it and see how amazing it is, well done Paul you one amazing guy x x
At Paul's hand , 02 Oct 2008
This is the story of Paul O'Grady, presenter TV Actor and the alter ego of the infamous Lily Savage.
If you pick up this book thinking you are getting sordid wild tales of Paul and his famous friends then you are going to be disappointed, there is not even a mention of Buster!
This is Paul from the beginning to him turning 18. Here he tells the story of his life, growing up in Birkenhead. That small fishing village near Liverpool!! Paul tells brilliantly all the tales of his family and the sorts of tricks that any little boy gets up to when they are 4 or 5, as well as the tricks they get up when they discover girls (and boys!). Experiences of school and work will make you laugh out loud, and his experience with the church and Catholicism is also so philosophical and funny at the same time. What is apparent throughout this book is how all the characters of his life, his mum and her sisters have influenced his later life not just personally but in his character of Lily Savage.
The stories you hear him tell on television, are true (if slightly exaggerated for effect) they are so beautifully told in the book, that you feel you are with Paul as he wrote this.
So many `famous' people try and tell their story in one book, but I feel Paul has only really touched the tip of the iceberg I hope there is a sequel.......please Paul write another.....

Well worth the money - a good read., 09 Oct 2008
The book starts well although it reads a bit like a hagiography written by Arthur Hailey. That is ok by me I like Arthur Hailey and have always regarded Buffett as a saint. I laughed out loud several times during the first 50 pages.
After this it gets a bit heavier going. There are many insights and many surprises. I had not realised that Berkshire Hathaway lost money from the start and wound up having the textile mill shut down. I had not reliased that Buffett was first a director of Salomon brothers and then became chairman appointed to clean up the mess which he seems to have done with great honour distinction and dignity. I liked the account of the arbitration with the former director Gutfreund who seems to have had it coming. His views on how derivatives spawn risk rather than remove it are very current today. Also his views on the Efficient Market Hypothesis have always been my own and not current orthodoxy.
A trifle over-written but very moving at the death of this friend Kay Graham and at the death of his wife Susie. Remarkable for the close friendship he enjoys with Bill and Melinda Gates and his partner Charlie Munger.
Good but..., 08 Oct 2008
I can't agree more with 1nnovator' review. This is a good book on Buffett but it could be better. Particularly liked the first 1/3 because it concentrated on his character and how he came to be the man he is. The 2/3 it did became more factual and felt a bit padded like it was written quickly she wanted to finish the book quickly.
Liked the one by Roger Lowenstein better but this is the only 'official' biography with direct interviews with Buffett so it is as close as it gets to the man.
More Buffalo News than Washington Post, 04 Oct 2008
How can the most comprehensive biography of the world's most remarkable allocator of capital be disappointing? Alice Schroeder has used her several years of access to Buffett to good, but not great effect.
This is a terrific human interest story, but how many purchasers will be buying the book for that reason?
For those of us spoiled by Buffett's ability to say all with few words, wading through Schroeder's work is frustrating. Ultimately, the return per word read matches the index of Buffett biographies, nothing more. For the book to live up to the man a greater return was required.
Everyone should understand Buffett, but start with the main feature: his own words and books that add value. This is the equivalent of the bonus disc: not as good as the feature, but with lots of background detail for enthusiasts.
A Lesson Not To Be Missed in Difficult Times, 29 Sep 2008
Warren Buffett is one of the most important and successful people in the business world. His life is a story of success - not a single lucky hit but a career going from one victory to another. One would be very irrational to miss an opportunity to have a glimpse of what made him the person he is and what made his success so huge. This book offers more then just a glimpse - it is a full scale portrait of the man. Full scale in more than one sense - this is a book of almost a thousand pages.
Alice Schroeder has done a marvelous job putting together this biography - it is insightful and thought-provoking. People pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the honour of lunching with Buffett - you can get to know him (inasmuch as he was ready to reveal himself, obviously) for much less so why not give it a try?

wonderful, 12 Oct 2008
Have just finished reading. Ab wonderful. Made me laugh out loud, which caused a stir on the train!! I am a great fan of D F and am delighted the book was a great insight in to her life. Would make a great xmas gift. Have also read two other books recently which were also highly entertaining reading. "Now then lad" and "pop goes the weasel" which i bought together.
Everything I had hoped for, 08 Oct 2008
I was really looking forward to this book after being a fan through French and Saunders and Vicar of Dibley. Dawn does not disappoint she writes wonderfully well and you do feel you are getting an insight into her life in a way that most autobiographies leave out.
This memoir made me laugh and cry, a little bit embarrasing when you are reading it on the train home!
I always knew Dawn French was beautiful!!, 08 Oct 2008
I just saw this great book this morning and grabbed it. It is just loaded with some truly great photos, many in colour. Dawn French once said her father told her she was beautiful. I personally have always thought so, too. When you read her own true story and see these great and many rare, never before published photos, I think you will agree that Dawn is not only tremendously talented and funny but is truly one gorgeous babe, too!! Highly recommended!!
Dawn's delightful new read, 07 Oct 2008
Although the title nearly put me off, (wondering if this was going to be another celeb confessing eating disorders) I really loved this book! An absolute gem which I am now recommending to my friends.
What is really clear is just what a lovely, warm, funny person Dawn French is, her writing had a real resonance for me having had similar experiences and she really touched me with her revelations about her past.
An inspiration to women and a hilarious read, I highly recommend it!
A brilliant read!, 07 Oct 2008
This is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. It's a very funny, clever and sometimes sad look at the life of one of Britain's comedy greats. From her relationship with her father, to when she first met Jennifer Saunders and the spiralling celebrity which ensued, this book is packed full of brilliant insight into Dawn French's life. I urge you to buy it.

Bought this at a signing last week and I haven't put it down since. Parky has met some of the most important people of the last 40 years and lead a fascinating life. Despite all that success he remains extremely charming and humble, wrote a lovely message in the book I bought for my mum. Perfect xmas gift.

Parky's a legend, 06 Oct 2008
Bought this at a signing last week and I haven't put it down since. Parky has met some of the most important people of the last 40 years and lead a fascinating life. Despite all that success he remains extremely charming and humble, wrote a lovely message in the book I bought for my mum. Perfect xmas gift.
fantastic!!, 10 Oct 2008
Alan Carr is a total sweetie. He's a real person, just like you and me - and that is meant as a good thing.
Hearing about Alan's early life, his experiences as a homosexual, (though really not a very active one) and growing up in the limelight created by his football managing father, it really is a lesson for all of us in how life is a trial for everyone, even when life is pretty normal.
I had known Alan was funny, (his frequent TV appearances had proven this) however I had never know that he hadn't just popped up out of nowhere to entertain me.
Thank you Alan for providing such entertainment.
almost wet myself, 09 Oct 2008
My partner wouldn't let me read this in bed because I was laughing so much. Waking the whole house, really.
He's a gem, Alan. So many strange and wonderful stories--I'm surprised he's so normal. And the picture sections are some of the best bits. Loved it.
Fabulous!, 08 Oct 2008
I absolutely love Alan Carr and was not disappointed one bit. As you're reading this book you can just imagine Alan saying every word. I really did laugh out loud and couldnt put it down - i read it in a day! What i love about Alan is that he doesn't take himself seriously and constantly sends himself up. He was destined to come together with Justin Lee Collins who are a fantastic double act in their own rights. May you continue to make us laugh Alan, the world needs more people like you!

Perfect, 10 Oct 2008
This is the most wonderful book I've ever read. She is whitty, charismatic and her insights and paths are so similar to mine I was able to relate on every page. Even if this is not similar to your path (some of my happily or newly married friends were not fussed by it) she stresses the importance of getting in touch with who you really are and how to find you. I have bought about 10 of these books and have given them to friends around the world from all walks of life. Amazing book I give it my highest recommendation.
Inspiring and empowering - read and pass it on!, 16 Sep 2008
Fantastic and humourous writing - couldn't put it down. Immediately passed the "wealth" to one of my best girlfriends upon completion. Every woman must read this!
I enjoyed the EAT part the best!, 03 Sep 2008
A lovely read and a moving tale which most women can relate to - especially the 'eat' bit where the protagonist re-discovers the jos of good food! I loved every minute of her time in Italy!
Chronicles a Journey of Joy, 02 Sep 2008
This book was really hard to put down. It is an autobiographical story that I wished would go on, that I just did not want to end. And of course, it has not ended, because life goes on, it's just that we are no more allowed access to the inner workings of the author's innovative mind. This book is a great window towards viewing how great emotional pain can be transmuted to an experience of grace and blessing, and leading to the proverbial happy ending, a life, infused with much greater joy, variety and color, besides including worldly success and financial prosperity.
As seen on the cover, this book is about one woman's search for wholeness and healing after two 'failed' relationships. To this end, the author, Elizabeth Gilbert, gives herself a year to investigate three different milieus, each for a more or less equal period of time. The first period would involve feasting in Italy and learning the Italian language, the second, fasting in an ashram in India, and the last, in Indonesia, where she would seek a balance between the two extreme environments.
So, knowing that her basic aim is to heal herself, the author indulges in the epicurean pleasures that Italy has to offer. After four months of travel and partying she moves on to a form of monastic living that is austere in the extreme. She spent her days in service at the Ashram, beginning with menial chores, and going on at a later stage, to administrative duties. All this she did, while meditating several hours a day, practising the Vipassana form of meditation, which is not easy on the ego, as most people, familiar with it, know. She cleared this test of her life with flying colours, being blessed with the experience of Immanence, Finally, after these events, Elizabeth Gilbert, moves on to Indonesia, seeking a balance between the two extremes in living conditions that she has experienced. There, she makes a lot of new friends, becoming part of their lives, and finally achieving true love. The happy ending shows her jetting between continents to family and friends strewn all over the globe.
One important lesson coming across from the book, that I myself, needed to be re-minded of, is that it is the journey towards the goal, that is more important. That the means are even more important than the goal. That your commitment to walk the path that has been charted out, with sincerity is what draws desired circumstances to you, either positive or negative. That full fledged, hundred per cent commitment can and does bring rewards. Many of us have forgotten this in our lives, our cynicism has taken over and shuts out our inner selves with its protectionism. Cynicism does not seem to have affected Elizabeth GIlbert's experience in this book.
An outstanding feature of this book is the heartwarming intimacy with which it has been written. Always open to trying out new games, the author freely makes jokes against herself. Some of her games have amazing repercussions. In one such incident, the author plays a game with a friend, affirming one after one, that several important people would like her to have a certain desire granted. And lo and behold, it was! This particular game alerted me once more to the greatest and most well concealed spiritual secret of the century, 'We are all One'.
The after-effects of this book have stayed with me like a warm blanket. I feel I am a better person for having read it. And of course, I recommend it with all my heart.
Forget the life coach and management books and just read this, 26 Aug 2008
I'm nearly at the end of the book but couldn't wait to say what a thoroughly enjoyable, funny, and thought provoking read this book has been. I've read this as an atheist with an always enquiring mind. I've not felt pressured into following Ms Gilbert's beliefs - this is not a "Try this at home" or a "How to be successful" book, nor is it judgmental of any religions. This is Gilbert's very personal journey and it explains ideas and practices from most religions. I have an understanding of where she's coming from. It hasn't changed my views of the practised religions, but it has encouraged me to read further. It could also be titled "A tourist's guide to searching for God" as the descriptions of the places Gilbert visits could rank with any good book on tourism.
I read the 1 poor review this book was given on the Amazon review pages and was surprised to find the person thought the book "very American". After reading the intro chapter I was expecting the author to be British. The humour is self-deprecating - not something I usually associate with American authors.

ABSOLUTLEY HILARIOUS - DO NOT MISS , 03 Oct 2008
This is the best autobiography ever written! Once I started reading, I could not put it down, and this is laugh out loud funny.. A wonderfully warm and funny book, written by one of our national treasures..I cannot recommed this enough, and almost cried when I had finished it!
be all upstanding for mr carr!, 03 Oct 2008
I absolutely love alan carr and his biog is trully amazing! from the first page i was hooked! a brilliant read! buy it! no buy two!
Warm and funny!, 10 Oct 2008
From the off this is hilarious, moving and funny. I can think of at least a dozen people I'll be giving this to at Christmas - just brilliant!
It could also be titled "A tourist's guide to searching for God" as the descriptions of the places Gilbert visits could rank with any good book on tourism.

just me by sheila hancock, 29 Sep 2008
well done sheila!I thoroughly enjoyed your book, i feel as though i have gone on your journey with you from just the two of us,it makes you realise that there is life after death, it does take courage, but if you are prepared to dip your toe in the water, its amazing what happens, i am getting my husband to read it too, because it does prepare you for the inevitable, be it him or me.I also enjoy being at an age where you dont care what you say or do, its so refreshing and liberating, next time you go away and your friend cannot make it, i would love to tag along for the adventure!!!!!!!!!!! looking forward to the next book from you.
How to overcome widowhood, 25 Sep 2008
This account by Sheila Hancock of how she coped with widowhood is honest, gripping and nicely-written.
I am not sure who it is intended for....other widows, perhaps, who might (while they are reading this) aquire a little of Mrs Thaw's courage in getting out there after deciding that life, what's left of it, is worth living after all.
It might help other women who find themselves in her situation.
And any single person who travels will sympathise and identify with her graphic account of how it feels to walk into a hotel restaurant for dinner and a table for one. (Take a book!)
I think she's gutsy, and a good writer.
