Peace of mind on the hardwood, 21 Aug 2000
Having read this book about 3 times already, I can truly say that Phil Jackson has discovered how to make players into superstars and superstars into players. The only thing that seperates players at the NBA level is mental toughness and this book outlines the what, how and why he did it. To get the greatest player ever to play in a team concept is tough and he's done it successfully. This book also provided me with an insight into the art of zen and it's implication on this great game. To summarize, I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about Phil Jackson and his success in Chigaco
Every hoopster needs to read this, 27 May 1999
This book helped me find peace with myself on the basketball court. Concepts of teamwork and selflessness have never been drilled home so well. My attitude on the court completely turned around after I read and understood this book. I wouldn't go so far to say it changed my life, but it definitely changed my life between the lines of the court.
profound reading experience, 02 May 1999
Like a sinner seeking salvation in the bible, Jackson's book, Sacred Hoops, helped change my life. His words helped me take control of my life by allowing me to understand who I truly am beneath my skin and within my soul. His vision helped me to see more clearly and if I could, I would thank him for showing me a path I would have never ordinarily traveled.
Good Stuff with a great perspective !, 17 Mar 1999
This book is great reading for those who lose faith in modern day sports and society in general. For once, you hear someone talk about teamwork, selflessness, sacrifice, positive attitude, etc. These are foreign concepts to most of today's NBA stars, but are what success is really all about. I also applaud Phil Jackson for daring to be different. Seeing things differently is often at the core of many successes. In this case, its using the power of the mind and selfless attitudes that are positioned as keys to taking you to the top. These ideas transcend basketball and make for good reading for anyone. I only wish their were more "originals" with a conscience like Phil Jackson.

Great stuff., 15 Jun 2006
This was quite an enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the rise and rise of this basketball prodigy due to all the hype surrounding him. There is no doubt that Lebron James is one hell of a talent after seeing many of his highlight plays on T.V, and on the net. This book details his performances in school for ST Vincent-ST Mary and other events, the frenzied interest from fans and media wanting to see him perform, sport commentators and coaches raving about him being the best thing in the sport of basketball, hummergate, speculation about his future career plans, and the fight for his feet between Adidas and Nike in which the latter won because the former could not offer huge amounts of money in the bidding war with its major rival. Great stuff.
Great Reader!, 10 Feb 2005
Great book for readers keane to learn about the life of "King James". Starting from his St Vincent college years to being drafted to Cleveland. A very talented player only 21 and already is living the life of a real Nba star! "People ask me how a 21 year old can have a story about him and I just say you put things down in history and this is the start of history" One of LeBron's St Vincent school and team friend. A great read, reccomended for all ages.
The Future of the Game, 16 Nov 2003
This book was interesting and really easy to read, It's written by Ben Osbourne who writes for the basketball magazine 'Slam' and its similar reading to the magazine. It covers Lebron James basketball carear so far up until he was drafted by the cavaliers this year. It goes into all the speculation about the free throwback jerseys and his 18th birthday present a brand new H2 Hummer about 50,000 dollars! The part I enjoyed the most was the fight between the shoe companies addidas and nike for Lebron's NBA shoe contract it was interesting how Addidas was down from the start and still lost out and how Nike just piled money into it. Overall a real good book and I was disapointed when it ended but then I remebered the kid is not even 20 yet and I look forward to seeing him play in the NBA. Peace

Very good read, 28 Jan 2008
A brilliant insight into an alternative career in professional basketball. Whilst Amaechi was not exactly an all star his story is none the less inspiring and unique. The book is not just targeted at basketball fans as its more the biography of an unlikely athlete and the challenges that he faced on and off the court. Don't expect a bling bling insight into the NBA but more an outsiders view from an alternative path. Well written and entertaining this book is highly recommended.

Great book on Kobe. I love reading about my favorite sports, 30 Jul 1999
Kobe Bryant had a very interesting life. My favorite team is the Lakers. Kobe even knows fluent Italian because he lived there.
This book rocks, 01 Apr 1999
Kobe Rocks. Kobe is the best thing to come along since sliced bread. He is undeniably the most physically talented player in the NBA today...he has all the tools, and no weaknesses, save experience. Rest assured that he will be the next incarnation of Michael Jordan in the new millenium. Check that, he will be the new and IMPROVED Michael Jordan. Kobe has all the tools that Jordan had, except you won't see him doing that stupid turnaround jumper ALL the time, how freaking boring can you get? The only one who could possibly hang with Kobe is Iverson, but Iverson is 6 inches shorter so won't dominate the game like Kobe. Kobe has the quickness, the handles, and the hops to dominate any player in the NBA, I don't care who you name. He can post up smaller players and even out-quick them, remember when he was guarding John Stockton in the playoffs, Stockton couldn't do squat. Compare that to supposed defensive whiz Gary Payton, who got destroyed by Stockton on every possession. Kobe is the player for the new generation. If he were a lawyer, or a cook, would Sprite taste any different?

I read this book for an english report and I feel that it wasn't a great book to read. If needed to have more information about Kobe's life and not just all that went on in the court. But other that that I really enjoyed reading the book.

Great story....Poorly told, 04 Aug 1999
to any larry bird fan this is a very good book. if you play basketball it is ok. And if you are just an average reader who reads this book for whatever reason, then this book is Ok. Bird is God, 06 Jul 1999
This book tells the greatness of Larry Bird. Excellent ! A MUST READ !
GREAT BOOK, 10 Dec 1998
Straight forward, and nothing bad about that. I play basketball regularly. After reading this book, it REALLY encouraged me to practice more to become a better baller. Larry Bird mentions that he wasn't gifted with ups, but he practiced his tail off to compensate for his weaknesses. Bird also mentions and I quote, "I play the game to have have that one moment where I just take over the game..." That and his work ethic served as a foundation for me to aspire to become good at basketball. In fact, the form of my jumpshot is emulated/dedicated to him. Thank you Larry Bird.
Larry Bird shows that hardwork brings success., 10 Dec 1998
A lesson that I learned from Larry Bird was that if you put your mind to something and give it your all ,you will achieve it. Larry Bird would set goals for himself to help him become better at basketball. He would practice everyday and all day to achieve those goals on the basketball court. He would get up in the morning to practice free throws, he would shoot between classes, and then he would have basketball practice after school. When Bird got into the NBA he had to establish himself as a good basketball player all over again, so he worked harder then ever to compete and then to dominate his opponents. Larry Bird's success proves that if you set your goals and be hard working and persistent then you will achieve those goals. Larry Bird's mentor was Jim Jones, his high school basketball coach. Jim Jones guided Larry Bird in his first years of playing basketball. Coach Jones taught him the basics of basketball and helped him correct his mistakes. Jones was a father figure to Bird when he was going through tough times when his dad committed suicide. Bird has kept in touch with his former coach throughout his life, and now they teach basketball camps together. I have a good opinion of this book. I like this book because it is mainly about basketball, and I love playing basketball. It also showed me how hard work can pay off in such a big way. I think it is very interesting because I was reading about one of my idols and learning the obstacles he overcame to get to where he is now. If you like to read about basketball and want to learn about Larry Bird, you should consider reading this book.
A touching, deeply motivating account of his life and career, 15 Sep 1998
Larry Bird is truly one of the greatest that ever played the game. With the help of Ervin "Magic" Johnson, he not only managed to resurrect the Celtic dynasty, but also the entire NBA, which was teetering on the brink of ruination. Now, we get to hear the man behind the legendary exploits on the court. This book not only tells of his career and accomplishments, but also gives a truly touching account of where he came from, where he's been, what he's been through, and what it took to become possibly the most legendary, if not talented, athlete ever to step on a basketball court. This is an inspiring, breathtaking story, and is deeply motivational. Bird is a living example that a combination of hard work, self-sacrifice, never-say-die ethics, and a selfless sense of team play, whether in a sporting venue or in ANY situation life has to offer, invariably leads to not only success, but also excellence. Recommended reading for all aspiring athletes, young people, and anyone else in need of inspiration.

Wow! What a story!, 09 Dec 2001
Allen Iverson: Fear No One tells the story of how a troublesome kid from Georgetown blossemed to become the NBA's MVP. Great book which people of all ages will enjoy, especially Sixers fans. Chronicles A.I.'s career all the way up to the NBA Finals 2001. Overall, great story and a great book.

One for the benchwarmers, 22 Mar 2008
I bought this book within days of it coming out, read it within days of it getting here, and it's presently making the rounds across my team...everyone seems to have a slightly different reaction to it:
People who sit towards the end of the bench (or have any experience playing in America) generally find it hilarious and on-point; starters and (local-league) superstars and coaches-maybe not so much.
Whilst I love this book because of the self-defacation from the author, the constant sarcastic tone and the random stories that Mr. Shirley tells-you've got to understand that he was an outsider looking in, his involvement with the team in question was next to nothing...so if you're buying this book for NBA insight, you won't get as much as you'd hoped (other than the peculiar habits of superstars...but hey, just look at any pro sports team/press and you'll see it on a daily basis).
Paul Shirley is undoubtedly funny, and an excellent writer, and I couldn't put the book down, and for that alone I give this book 5 stars, but please don't buy the book expecting a mammoth insight into an NBA club-you'll be disappointed.
Read It!!!!!!!!, 17 Jul 2007
A humerous, honest insight into the life of a pro-player who did not atomatically get drafted into the NBA but has struggled in his career since leaving college. Definetly a recommended read - very entertaining and intelligent throughout.

Product Description
One of the finest non-fiction writers in any line-up, Halberstam likes to alternate what he's deemed his serious work--books like The Best and the Brightest, The Fifties, and The Children--with his sporting interludes, though in his hands, sports are much, much more than fun and games. Books like The Breaks of the Game and October 1964 use sports as a prism. Culture, race, society, and history are all filtered through it, and Halberstam refocuses--and interprets--what comes out the other side. That he would now turn his considerable abilities to exploring Michael Jordan is not surprising. Halberstam loves hoops, and Jordan not only defines the game, he defines an era. His fame crosses international borders as easily as he dribbles past half-court lines. In focusing on Jordan--as athlete and force of nature--and his osmosis from a young hoop dreamer to product pitchman to the world, Halberstam is really examining intangibles like myth and legend, celebrity and fame, wealth and image, excellence and genius, race and style, the qualities of heroism and the pursuit of perfection. "That there had been even one Michael Jordan seemed in retrospect something of a genetic fluke," he writes, "and the idea that anyone would arrive in so short a span of time and do what he did both on and off the court seemed highly unlikely." But the phenomenon that is Jordan did just that. Understanding, even admiring, what he did, how he did it, and what it means in a basketball context and a larger one is Halberstam's goal, and, despite Jordan's lack of cooperation--or maybe because of it--Halberstam's muscular prose and thinking scores powerfully. Yet, there is a wistfulness, in the end, to Playing for Keeps; the game doesn't seem as much fun and collegial as it used to for Halberstam, and Jordan, great as he may be, emerges with less of the historic grace exhibited by Jackie Robinson, Ali, and Arthur Ashe than with a quality that Halberstam deems the athlete-explorer "in terms of going beyond previously accepted limits of what was humanly possible, and somehow by dint of physical excellence and unmatched willpower, pushing those limits forward that much more." Dazzling, certainly, but not necessarily heroic. Playing for Keeps is also available on audiocassette. --Jeff Silverman

It was a great book to read it had many interesting things in it that i didnt know about mr jordan. It also contains interesting info about larry bird magic johnson and dennis rodman.
You'll want this book, 06 Aug 1999
because everything about it is so detailed, from his rise to fame at chapel hill to his final shot, it's a masterpiece all in one
Anyone scoring less than 4, go back to reading the tabloids, 31 Jul 1999
This is a well researched, well written book on sports and the "Jordan" era. I don't feel Halberstam missed anything in the way of information and commentary on the game. Not being an avid basketball fan, I learned a great deal about professional sports and the pursuit of excellence. Too bad for those who came away from this read without gaining any insight into what it takes to be great. The author is a true investigative reporter, intelligent and thorough. Unfortunately, today all it takes to be thought of as great is the right "look" and a flare for writing tabloid type articles.
No access, not much of a book, 24 Jul 1999
The key to this book lies in the final of remarks of Halberstam who acknowledges that he had no access from Jordan in writing this book and clearly hoped for a lot. As a result there is a distance to it and, ultimately, it is little more than a chronology of Jordan's life. I read it because I am a sports fan and thought there might be some "inside scoop" on what makes Jordan tick. Unfortunately, it's not the there and the book is little more than a beach vacation read.
2nd rate Halberstam, 09 Jul 1999
If you are a basketball fan and simply want some some more information into to the life and times of Jordan, enjoy this breezy read.
