Down to earth and easy to read: a wonderful guide, 17 Aug 2007
The book covers very much everything you need to think of when starting your own business. From project management to accounting, Jim Smith uses clear language and several examples from his own company, in helping you to assess strenghts and weaknesses of this or that option when starting a small web design business.
It is very helpful if you're thinking to make some money out of web design, even if only as a freelancer. The book gives a full perspective on client relationships, including complete contracts, payment schedules and business plan templates.
The legal details are US-specific, so it might not be so hepful for non-US based businesses. Still, a good buy. A great resource, 20 Jun 2007
This book is a great resource for anyone considering starting up their own web design business. Rather than being written from the point of view of a large design business it is very applicable to the 'one man band'. Written by a man with a lot of experience it contains loads of common sense tips and guidelines. Fantastic. Exactly what I was looking for!!, 26 Aug 2002
After pondering with the idea for some time regarding starting up on my own as a self-employed web designer, I stumbled across this wonderful title! It's an absolutely cracking read, filled to the brim with useful hints and ideas, especially the examples of business plans and contracts in the appendices. Jim Smith, the American author of the book, seems to cover most aspects of what someone in my position would have to take into consideration if planning to start up as a web designer. Considerations such as technical ability, sales experience, etc, are all mentioned to a degree easily understandable by everyone. After reading through this book several times it just made me want to work for myself even more than ever! As such, i've taken the plunge and started up on my own! I simply cannot recommend this title enough! It's an absolute Belter!!

SPARE ROOM START UP, 18 Aug 2008
Reviewed by serial entrepreneur Valerie Dwyer, founder of My Wonderful Life(tm) Coach and other enterprises. Gripping as any thriller, for an entrepreneur that is, this is the book to take you from rags to riches quicker than Cinderella - when you take the lessons. Oh! that this book had been around when I started my first enterprise at 18. I have met some of the featured entrepreneurs from these Case Studies and had the privilege to work with a number of home business start up entrepreneurs, including the late Dame Anita Roddick, and Emma Jones. This book gets the message across that they are just like us. Speaking from experience, starting a business from home is life changing but EASY! - when you know how. Spare Room Start Up is excellent not only for helping people to make that start, but it is a call to stand up and take pride that a home based business is the most sensible and cost-effective way for many people to test, launch and grow their business idea in a safe environment. This applies perhaps especially for people with illnesses, disabilities, children or caring responsibilities - And let's be clear, the lessons in this book also apply equally to all businesses.
Full of practical business and personal stuff; lots of brilliant Case Studies; easy to follow hints, tips and ideas; useful website links plus templates that you can use straight away for everything from sorting out your marketing plan to getting the pages of publicity that every business needs.
Spare Room Start Up fascinating, educational, practical, easy to read and understand, with valuable lessons taking you through the process step by step, it is also a very tactile book, lovely texture, packed with beautiful colour photographs - it its unputdownable! A present (Christmas is coming) for students, this book should be in all libraries and a recommended text for schools, colleges and universities. Make it available in crèches for the new generation of Mumpreneurs! Spare Room Start Up should be the handbook of all business advisers and business support agencies and organisations, including Business Links.
What's more, this is an excellent coffee table book for every home and reception area even doctor's surgeries - because it is great medicine. But watch out - it's just the right size to pop into your bag and walk away with! mywonderfullife@btinternet.com
The Perfect Business Springboard, 14 Jun 2008
Finally a book people can relate to, it's tough enough contemplating starting your own business but when most books are stuffy or written by larger corporate organisations in corporate speak, it makes it even harder. It's about time we had a perfect stepping stone to getting started in business. Lot's of time later for the heavy volumes, which still have a vital role, but not as your first read! This book guides you into the all important foundations, builds personal & business confidence, and explains the pro's and con's without scaring you off the idea. Having been a business owner for years I know that starting out is a giant step so congratulations to Emma Jones for being bold and breaking out of the world of old fashioned business books - let's hope there is more to follow! I will be recommending this book to my client's and friends as a helpful first step.
A Refreshing Change to the norm!!!, 02 Jun 2008
Just finished reading Spare Room Start Up and really enjoyed it. Having read a number of business start up books before setting up my own business I have to say what a breath of fresh air! The layout and pictures make it a really different type of book. I have really enjoyed it and find myself keeping it on my desk to flick through during the course of the day. The pictures and style is inspiring.
Well done!!
everything you need to know, 28 May 2008
I bought this book yesterday and read it in one night. I have been on a few business link start up courses and this covered absolutely everything I had been told and more. E.Jones backs up everything she says with website details and examples of other home business owners which is encouraging as they also so why they did it and the positive difference it has made to their lives.Easy to read and informally written, I also found that every question I had was answered. The author mentions a follow up , that Im sure will be just as good.
great read for any new business, 20 May 2008
Emmas book is both logical and practical (with nice photos which always helps). By following this book i am sure many spare room start up would have an easier start - i wish i had a chance to read this when we started The Baby Gurus, me from my back bedroom and Emma in her dining room - this book is ideal for any new start company looking to gain focus on the task ahead.

Having looked at eBay's own help pages and read this book I can say that the book is so out of date it is more or less useless!
There is no mention of eBay business accounts, apparently this type of account is a legal obligation for ANY eBay business.
The web-sites referenced in the book are mostly non-existant and tools recommended have all been replaced with updated versions.
Use the eBay help pages instead, at least then you can't go wrong with your buisness.
I liked this book, 20 Jan 2008
I bought this book for a friend, had a read through, and liked it.
A good reference guide for UK Ebayers and should be kept within reach for both newbies and more experienced sellers.
Don't make the mistake that this book will give you a business, good advice is to get a business idea and buy books like this to give you the information to exploit your idea.
Worth the asking price...recommended.
Does what it says on the cover, 01 Feb 2007
An excellent read. Thorough, easy to read, comprehensive without being patronising, PLUS aimed towards eBay.co.uk, so no American jargon and legislation to wade through. I read it in two days and now can't wait to get started! Keep it by your PC to refer to when starting up your own eBay business, you'll need it!

GREAT BOOK FOR NEW CATERERS, 27 Sep 2008
OR EVEN FOR VETERANS TO BRUSH UP
I am a recent (less than a year that I created my company) caterer from Spain. I have found Denise's information very well structured with many tips (checklists, real examples, concrete answers to common errors, etc) and many references for further reading (websites, books, etc).
It is true that part of the information is US specific (for example rules and regulations on alcohol serving, legal aspects of the catering business, etc) but it is also useful to know.
It touches every aspect of catering - from writing a business plan, to marketing, setting prices, etc - in a simple yet comprehensive manner. I have not heard of Denise Vivaldo before but reading her book I can tell you that it gives you many concrete action items that can be applied to your catering and improve it (for example a Quality and Service Report to send to clients after the party).
Ms. V answers all the ??? you've had and then some!!!, 10 Nov 1998
After graduation from Culinary school, my heart leaned toward catering...had so many unanswered questions, until I read this book. I am now on my way. The book is written in a very informative way. The author makes you aware of many things that you would not even know, until you fall on your face!
A great book for the lost, confused and aspiring caterer!, 07 Sep 1998
How To Start a Home-Based Catering Business is a wonderful paperback for someone like myself. This book cintained the information I needed to get me on my way. It also confirmed information that I had, but was unsure of . The book is clear, concise and well organized from start to finish. I felt confident enough, once reading it, to actually start my business. I often refer to the book as a reference manual to see if I am on the right track. I appreciate Denise for sharing many of her techniques and styles which helped me to upscale my business. She also taught me ways to seek out those who could help make my business great. My inhibiton in starting my business was that my work would be ordinary. Using this book as my guide, along with my imagination, I went immediately from ordinary to extraordinary. So far my customers have been very pleased.

Should I really do this.....?, 03 Jun 2004
The only reason that I would be reluctant to review this book is because I don't really fancy allot of competition! This book is one flow of publishing related business ideas after the other. I can't walk anywhere now without seeing opportunities locally that can generate good profits. We are just acting on one now, and with some good guidance from this book it should be profitable first time round without any significant investment! Hope not too many people buy this...... ;-)

Out of date, 09 Jun 2008

Every Online Bookseller Should Read this Book!!!, 11 Jul 2008
I've been selling books on the Amazon Marketplace as a hobby for about 7 months now. After reading "The Home-Based Bookstore," I could definitely make more money by employing Steve Weber's advice.
His advice includes:
-where to find books
-how to price them
-how to handle inventory
-how to handle shipping
-how to deal with problem customers
-and how to deal with legal details (taxes, etc.)
I made about $400 in two weeks after selling the most sought-after books. The most sought-after books are usually college textbooks.
In one part of the book, he says how college students are sometimes careless when purchasing a book. They occasionally buy the older edition, thinking it's the edition they need. When they receive it, they get angry. But it's usually their fault for not searching with the ISBN or paying attention to the details. There are, however, some sellers who list the wrong edition on Amazon's Marketplace. It may not be intentional, but listing the wrong edition is a violation of the Amazon Marketplace guidelines. I once purchased a textbook from a third-party seller who sent me the older edition. I didn't do anything about it. I was still able to use it.
After a few weeks of selling, I started getting some feedback. The first five were all positive, but I got one neutral feedback. The neutral feedback I got was fair. I sent her the wrong book. It was my fault. I entered the title instead of the ISBN when I searched for it. ALWAYS use the ISBN. To prevent negative feedback from this buyer, I issued a refund immediately and allowed her to keep the book I had sent her. I lost money when I did this, but I couldn't afford negative feedback at the time.
I may never become a full-time bookseller online, but I will continue to do this as a hobby. I also think that college students should get a copy of this book. It will help them tremendously when purchasing their textbooks...and reselling them when they're done with them.

A Great Introduction, 23 Mar 2006
As someone who's sold a few hundred books on Amazon over the years, I was curious to see what a real expert has to say -- especially as I'm about to embark on liquidating a relative's 3,000-volume collection! Overall, this is a great little introduction for anyone who's thought about selling books online. Weber covers all the bases succinctly, with plenty of URLs and references to more specialist titles for further reference. Lots of handy tips and suggestions throughout. The one quibble I would have is with the pricing discussion on page 51. In the case of a book where there are plenty of copies on the market, Weber advises matching, but not "lowballing" the price. However, the automation software elsewhere makes lowballing so easy, and thus to pervasive, that one is often forced into the practice. My own experience is that if I have a book for sale and there are 10 others just like it for sale at Amazon, the _only_ way to sell it is to give it the lowest price. And since we're talking $8.95 vs. $9.95, I'm not particularly put out. This quibble aside, I found this to be a very practical, level-headed guide, with lots of good resources -- although I would have liked a little more depth and detail on some of the sections.

The best book I have read in 1999 (and I read many)!!, 10 Aug 1999
If you feel stuck in your career, wishing you had ideas for how to start developing something on your own, then this is THE book to read!! I highly recommend it.
Outdated and a bore!, 09 Aug 1999
Although I felt there was some value related to "earning centers", most of this book is one quote after another. Some of the things that really bothered me were related to what she learned from her divorce and failed marrage. Not interested Ms. Winter! Some of the points of this book may have been valid in the early 1990's, but things are a lot different with the Internet. Since 90 percent of this book is quotes from others, the author should be listed as "Barbara J. Winter, et.al., et.al, et.al, et.al." Save your money for something more recent!
If You've Ever Dreamed of Being Your Own Boss, 29 Jul 1999
This book is definitely for you. Like the previous reviewer, I was always too eratic for the status quo, didnt think like other people nor have the same "ingrained and expected" corporate mindset. This book has helped me see a way to buy my own ticket to freedom. Its good to know that there is a place for those of us who are more independently minded and that in fact we can succeed too....just on our own terms and in our own way. I would *highly* recommend this book and have bought it for others as a gift.
Lack of Focus?... Revise... Multiple Profit Centers!, 23 May 1999
In the past forty years I've lived on four continents, in thirty homes, and held fifteen jobs... and had a few self employment activities on the side. By the standards of friends and other books, I lacked direction and focus. ** After reading MAKING A LIVING WITHOUT A JOB, I was a person a wealth of potential "profit centers." How wonderful to be given the insight and the permission to persue income while embracing diversity. ** You don't have to have ONE BIG THING to creat a life without a job. If you have a lot of interests/ideas; You have "multiple profit centers." ** Anytime I meet someone considering a job change or a career change... I send them to this book.
It will change how you think about your skills/abilities., 21 Nov 1998
This book is the book for exploring your fears, strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for how to face tomorrow and earning money there. It has basic exercises to stimulate your exploration of what you can offer the marketplace, and it provides easily understandable commonsense direction of how to find "work" you will enjoy. I have also read "Do what you love and the money will follow" by Marsha Sinetar. Both authors agree that you must do something you enjoy, but Barbara Winter gives you some direction on how to discover what that is. I can't say enough about this book. I am inspired, and I know that I will not spend the rest of my life dreading my "day job" and working only for the weekend.

Out of date, 09 Jun 2008
Hope not too many people buy this...... ;-)
