Good, but very American, 23 Feb 2008
This is an American book, so some of the banking details don't apply. The references to God are also much more frequent than most British readers would think relevant in a book about finance (I'm fairly religious myself, but even so I thought there were a few sermons too many). That said, if you're starting to worry about repaying student loans, or that the credit card minimum payments are creeping up and up, it's a very good, practical book. It suggests a good way of tracking your income, planning for the unexpected expense, and of paying off your current debts quickly.
If you're in serious financial trouble, try Jerrold Mundis's 'How to get out of debt'. If you're just starting to get worried, try this book.
One way to save your money is to not buy this book!!!!, 08 Feb 2006
I am absolutely appalled, this is no help at all!!I don't want to know about God and American banking systems!!! This book is simply filled with a lot of tosh that in no way helped me.I felt I had not only wasted my money in buying this but also my time in reading it.The only way the author got out of debt must of been by writing this nonsense and selling it to gullible people like me!!
What a source of inspiration!!!, 26 Jul 2004
This book covers it all. The author speaks as a person who has been in debt and how she got out of the mess. I didn't specifically need advice on how to get out of debt, but her advice on having an instantly accessible contingency fund and how to save was excellent. This is a book to specifically recommend to all youngsters earning their first salary.
Great strategy for debt elimination!, 12 Jun 1999
I read the book and I'm now on my second month of a 39 month "Rapid Debt Repayment Plan". This is how long it will take to pay off $25,000 of unsecured debt, by simply making CURRENT minimum monthly payments. The strategy is also shown online at "Cheapskate Monthly". Check it out, use it and start a new life!
This book saved our marriage and changed our lives!!!, 04 Dec 1998
Thank God for Mary Hunt! She hit me right between the eyes with reality. We started in Spring 1995 with $70,000 in debt. It has taken 3 1/2 years of hard work, but in 4 months we will be completely debt free except for our mortgage, and will be in the black for the first time since 1985. She saved our marriage, gave us back our sanity and ensured that our son will have a great future. Read this book!!!

This book offers practical, no-nonsense advice and guidance to people planning to buy a house. Ms. Glink is very knowledgeable on the subject matter. Her ten steps are easy for anyone to follow. I met her at home buying seminar at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Her radio show was being taped during the seminar. She was extremely conversant on the topic of home buying, offered great advice (no matter how simple or complex the question) and was inspiring. Compared to other similar books, this is a must buy.
A very helpful book!, 05 Dec 1998
What a life-saver this book is! I used to live in a cardboard box under the viaduct but thanks to Glink's book I now have a two-bedroom trailer with a hottub on the deck!
The Pre-Buying Book, 14 Jul 1998
We're about a year away from buying a home, and this workbook has been our guide to get us focused and to actively take steps to make sure we're in the best position possible--financially, emotionally, and intellectually--before we even start looking at homes. We followed Glink's suggestions on getting our credit reports in order and are now looking up information on exclusive home buyers agents. We'd be lost without the worksheets and the sound advice she gives.

I do really like this book. But I don't think it told me much about budget glamour that I didn't already know, or that is feasible. In the fashion section, there's a couple of pages denoting fashion 'types' - who actually tries to dress to a 'type'? And I beg to differ with the author's statement that nobody needs more than five herbs and spices. Come on, they're like 50p a jar - what better way to add variety to your budget meals? Also, according to the author you can pick up abandoned designer goods simply by strolling around university halls when students are moving out - maybe in New York!
And yes, it's written for an American audience - anyone mind telling me what exactly "tiki" is? And where is my nearest branch of Target? It won't ruin your reading, but it would be cool to have a British edition.
Still, it's a nice present for someone who's leaving home or uni for the first time.
Invaluable for Urban Girls, 06 Jan 2006
Although this book is American and therefore talks in dollars and cents it's easy to relate it to UK city living. It manages to address a serious subject (surviving on a budget in ridiculously expensive surroundings) with humourous, 'glossy mag' style sass. The tips are brilliant on everything from how to get a cheap (but non-scary) haircut to how to find free furniture along with brilliant tips on style and some good budget recipes. As a 'burbs girl who is London-bound this book has given me a beacon of budget-friendly light in the daunting vastness of the big city. Highly recommended for any city girl who doesn't have a hugely successful hotel magnate as a father.

For non investors everywhere - a must read., 01 Feb 2002
My friends and family know me as a non investor. Not any more. This book is great. It has not only encouraged me to invest, but it has taught me in simple English how to go about it and how to avoid the pit-falls that many others make. The writing is insightful and whitty. The examples of how your investments grow over time are great. Read it now if you're a non-investor or you won't be a millionaire in 60 years. Other investment books I've come accross wanted me to comprimise my living standards. The great thing about the Gardner's is that they tell you how to invest and not make sacrifices to your daily life. Read it now if you are an investor incase you find that you're paying an expert unneccessary commission and receiving lower returns than if you did it yourself.

Not ideal for UK currency, 20 Apr 2008
I wouldn't recommend this envelope system for GB pounds (or euros for that matter) because the size of the envelopes -and particularly the envelopes which stay in the binder- is too small for our larger denomination notes.
I haven't had mine for long and the envelopes are showing a lot of wear and tear and I've had to revert back to normal envelopes which have flap closures and are a more compatible size with our currency.
I'm a big far of Dave and the envelope budgeting system, but I did not find that this set "fit the bill" ha, ha, for me.

A Practical No-Nonsense Guide, 29 Jan 1999
More entertaining that helpful, 03 May 2008
I do really like this book.
Puts you on the path to freedom , 31 Oct 2008
This book was a great read, and a detailed process for how to create wealth and be financially independent. Emlyn guides us through a step by step process, and along the way shares motivational tips and invaluable insights, leading us from the wealth creation mindset through creating a wealth growth plan. A must read for people who are serious about becoming financially independent.
Not ideal for UK currency, 20 Apr 2008

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!, 03 Jun 1998
Andrew Tobias has written an excellent sequel to a financial classic that should be read by everyone interested in making the most out of their money. Easy to read (I read this book o a trip from Orlando to the west coast) It's not, however, "The only financial book you'll ever need", although a very good one. I also highly recommend "Personal Finance For Dummies", 'More Wealth Without Risk" and "Financial Self-Defense" by Charles Givens.
Easy to read and understand, two thumbs up!, 13 Jan 1998
KISS - Keep it simple and stupid. This is one of the best personal finance books that I've ever read. I managed to finish it over the last weekend. Excellent for beginners like me!
