Another good reference guide from the HSE, 14 Feb 2008
This book is mandatory reference material for people involved with electrical safety in the workplace. We use it here at PPL Training for the Part P courses both defined and full scope. For those that are invloved in Part P electrics we would highly recommend this book as reference material for Part P approval vists from Part P competent persons schemes. Teh book is clearly laid out and is not a sparkie read only as other non electrical readers will find it useful.

Introduction to Health and Safety at Work, 11 Apr 2006
This book was supplied at my recent NEBOSH general certificate course and was invaluable in passing said course. However its use beyond that has also been invaluable, it gives good clear information on most Health and Safety issues to be found in a manufacturing unit. It is not over complicated by legalise, is written in plan English and has a user-friendly index. If I had a criticism it would be that sometimes a subject is spread through out the book but not sure if you can avoid that.
Great for NEBOSH Certificate Students, 04 Feb 2005
This is a great introduction for anyone to health and safety and is an ideal text for anyone studying the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health. www.SafetyServicesDirect.com

A must-have for M&E designers taking the CSCS card test, 30 Dec 2007
The CSCS card test for the Professionally Qualified Person - Design, includes questions on highway works, scaffold erection, and demolition. So if you're a building services design engineer, you are unlikely to answer those questions without having read this book beforehand.

This is the bible of health and safety in construction. An absolute must for all industry professionals and NEBOSH students. If you only buy one health and safety book about construction make it this one.
A text book for student and practitioner, 06 Mar 2006
Technical books fulfil two main purposes. They are either a basis of study for the student preparing for exams or they are where busy practitioners go to find quick answers to unfamiliar problems. Many text books do not do both. This one does. I have a shelf full of turgid books essential to the student but which remain largely unread and rarely consulted. Whilst modestly describing itself as an introduction to the subject, I am sure many practitioners would agree that this work covers as much of it as they are likely to need. I have possessed mine for only two months yet already it is a constant companion. It is most attractively presented with many colour illustrations, charts and schedules. The chapter topics are well chosen and apposite. Each chapter is split into short digestible sections and best of all, the index has not let me down yet. Towards the end of the book is an invaluable 85 page, easily navigated, chapter on the main legal requirements governing the subject. Aimed at covering the NEBOSH syllabus, the content is necessarily comprehensive. At the same time it is accessible and guides the busy practitioner quickly to assistance on the subject matter before him. I can well recommend this book to all in the Construction Industry who seek an attractively presented, clear, concisely written but nonetheless full guide to a subject now so dominant in the design and exection of its products.

I'm responsible for the OS&H programme at my workplace and it was a good guide for implementing the programme. Its instructions are clear and it is very easy reading and the price is a giveaway! I recommend this book to any middle manager, HR manager, safety committee member, or anyone who is interested in gaining knowledge in the area without entering the classroom.

a useful book to aid preperation, 25 Aug 2008
Have no problems with the book apart from a couple of mistakes in the test questions and on the stopping distances (pge. 12 + 13)
Other than that this book has helped a great deal with the preperation of the test and i would recommend it to anyone thinking of buying it.
Useful for all road riders,, 23 Apr 2001
This is an informative and well laid out little book containing useful information for every road rider. (Which, in this day and age is almost all of us). This book is designed for people taking their BHS riding and road test, but is useful for everyone who needs to brush up on their highway code. I would particularly recommend it to people with little or no road experience. This small book covers many useful road related topics including carriage driving tips and basic first aid. All in all, a good reference book with multiple choice questions at the end , (again for BHS test takers, but useful never the less).

This is an ideal book for the chainsaw novice. If you buy a chainsaw to use in the garden get this book, it could save your life. Chainsaws can be lethal in the hands of the inexperienced/uninformed. Devastating but a must read, 08 Feb 2006
There is not much else I can say apart from this whole sorry saga is absolutely devastating and is something that should never have happened. This is the theme running throughout this excellent read - and a read that will leave you saddened and disgusted. Scraton does not mince his words and is happy to get involved in all the legal mumbo jumbo that can get quiet tedious at times. But this still ranks as a five starrer just because it is such an emotional piece of writing which made me angry that nobody has ever been prosecuted for the disaster.
Shocking and upsetting, but a must read, 07 Oct 2005
I read this book to get an understanding of Hillsborough as I was young when it happened, my husband was there as a 14 year old Liverpool fan. I am disgusted at how Liverpool fans were percieved and persecuted as a result of a chain reaction of poor decisions, ignorance and passing the buck took 96 lives. Everyone should read this book who wants to know how we all put our lives in the hands of people we should be able to trust, only to be let down time and time again. Its given me a very cynical view of the police in particular. I only hope The familes of those who died get their deserved justice one day.
A well written book that shouldnt have been written., 02 Mar 2005
I am glad i read this book but at the same time wish i didn't have to read it. It makes you upset and angry knowing that something so simple and easy, could and should have been done but wasn't. A real tear jurker. JFT96 YNWA
Well written and hard-hitting. A MUST read, 22 Jun 2004
I think that this has to be one of the most moving and thought-provoking books that I have ever read. It is well balanced, sympathetically written and extremely informative - a lasting tribute to the poor souls who lost their lives. And I wish to God that it never had to be written. The description of what happened on the actual day is shocking and hard hitting but is done in the most sensitive and non-gratuitous way. He shows the utmost respect for those unfortunate enough to be involved, whilst at the same time conveying the awful truth as vividly as any photograph. I finished the book feeling angry and disturbed and wanting to do something, but not knowing what My only criticism is that a plan of the ground would have been really helpful. Being unfamiliar with football stadia, I had difficulty understanding the layout of the ground. That aside, it is a faultless account that anyone interested in truth and justice should read.
Very Impressive, excellently written and thought provoking!, 27 Jan 2001
First class! I have never had so many different emotions reading just one book before, this is definately a must read for everyone. From someone closely associated with Hillsborough and the aftermath this is an extremely well balanced piece of work. I have lent my copy to a few of my friends who have been equally disturbed by the years of aftermath suffered by all the famillies and survivors. The only thing missing, I think, must be a plan of the ground at Hillsborough which would have made the desciptions of Gate C and the control box etc easier to follow especially to those unfamilier with the ground.

I would particularly recommend it to people with little or no road experience. This small book covers many useful road related topics including carriage driving tips and basic first aid. All in all, a good reference book with multiple choice questions at the end , (again for BHS test takers, but useful never the less). Save your skin and read this book., 22 Mar 2008
Excellent book for both the NEBOSH Student and Employer., 17 Feb 2002
This book is an updated version of the Third edition and takes account of legislative changes in the interim period. The text is clear and concise and provides sufficient information to put you on the right track. The content is not confusing and is easy to understand and interpret. Even those with little Health & Safety knowledge will find this book to be both informative and excellent value for money.

This is a great introduction for anyone to health and safety and is an ideal text for anyone studying the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health. www.SafetyServicesDirect.com It did the job..., 20 Sep 2008
I bought this prior to doing the test - and passed first time! Essential reading.
Highly Recommended, 31 May 2008
This is the bible of health and safety in construction.
One-stop Guide indeed!, 07 Apr 2008

Mostly good but some obvious deficiencies, 20 Oct 2007
Although a largely useful reference, the chapters are of variable quality and don't always address issues that are of most value to practicing OPs. The most notable lack is a chapter dedicated to CFS or other similarly difficult diseases that are commonly encountered in practice. What information there is on CFS is contradictory and hence somewhat unhelpful to the reader. However a useful resource nevertheless, and a book that all involved in Occupational Medicine should have available to them.
fitness for work, 08 Dec 2004
good and informative, without being exhausting. makes good study book and relevant to occupation. focused and clearly written. the only flaw may be not including pictures.
How To Be Healthy Though Working, 31 Jan 2002
This substantial book contains a wealth of useful information on matters of concern to employees and employers. It would be an excellent acquisition for any workplace fortunate enough to possess a library, and ideally should be widely available for consultation as the need may arise. Certainly Personnel, Health and Safety, and Welfare specialists as well as rank-and-file workers might have occasion to refer to it from time to time. Its coverage is extensive and authoritative - there are nearly 30 chapters by different expert authors. A few highlights may give a flavour of the work. In Chapter 2 'Legal Aspects', readers are reminded of provisions under common law (in England, but Employment protection law applies in Scotland in the same way), statute law, and European directives. Employers have a common law duty of reasonable care, and are required to guard against reasonably foreseeable risks, while employees need to take reasonable care and cooperate with safety measures. Chapter 3 expounds the specific provisions and consequences for employers and OPs of the Disability Discrimination Act, while Chapter 5 makes the point that the Occupational Physician's (OP) role differs from that of other specialists and GPs, emphasising that whatever conflicts of interest or loyalty may arise, the interests of the individual patient must, ethically, come first. There should be no conflict between the 'business ethics' of the company and the OP's own as a doctor, and he/she should strive to influence the company in this regard. The important topic of stress is dealt with in Chapter 7, 'Psychiatric Disorders', the working definition of a stressful situation being one of disparity between the demands made on a worker and his/her ability to respond, where the worker has little or no control, and may be actual or perceived. Work-related stressors may be intrinsic to the job, role-related or interpersonal. More generally, the line taken is that the psychological environment should be assessed in the way accepted as appropriate for physical, chemical and biological hazards; a participative approach is advocated in preference to an autocratic style of management. Chapters 11, on Spinal Disorders, and 25 on Alcohol and Drug Misuse, are like the rest of the book very competently presented, and would be good to have on hand to refer to in case of need. In a final Chapter, 27, the topic is an increasingly high-profile one, 'Work and the Older Employee'. Information and advice is given on healthy ageing and production, with the aim of correcting some of the limitations often imposed on members of this group, stemming from stereotypes that should be challenged, such as the belief that ability/motivation to learn new skills deteriorates with age. The book's overall message might be paraphrased to the effect that the contribution of workers of all kinds and at all levels should be appreciated and encouraged in a way that does them no harm. Half a dozen appendices, references, address list and index add further use-value to this hefty and worthwhile tome.
