It's like having an experienced business person holding your hand., 17 Feb 2007
When I began the long and winding road that was setting up my own business, this book was the first one I bought.
Step by step it lays out what you need to do, why you need to do it, in some cases what will happen if you don't do it and does this over 15 clearly laid out and concise chapters.
The language is straight forward and positive and this is particularily helpful in sections such as 'Doing the Books.' It actually made subjects such as VAT and Tax Returns understandible, (no mean feat).
The book is loaded with examples, helpful contacts and websites all that help make the process of starting your own business a lot less painful.
Additional to this the cover of this book is hillarious and in times of dispair can help put a smile on your face.
If you are thinking quitting the day job then this book is a must buy before you write your notice letter. For everyone else this is a good read to understand how business works and who knows you just might quit the day job too.
Recommended to anyone starting their own business, 12 Oct 2003
Even though I am a long way off from starting my own business, this book is definetely something which I would feel would lead me in the right direction. The book is split up into chapters outling the main points of any business (money, premises, doing the books, etc....) and is a must for anyone thinking of starting their own business as, unlike the other books out there on business, it is split up and presented clearly making it very easy to understand and take in. Definetely recommended.

A 'must have' that's great value for money!, 30 Jan 2005
This book is a 'must have'. It is helping me through my level 2 beauty qualification and I know it also contains all the information I will need for level 3. That's good value for money. The step-by-step diagrams are really easy to follow, as is the writing. Everything is explained really clearly and it's written in a way that's so easy to understand. Thank-you Susan Cressy, your book has helped me so much.
The best beauty therapy text book, 24 Jan 2005
This book is fantastic, I love the easy to read content and that it covers the whole of the beauty therapy syllabus. Information is very easy to find and I have used this book for writing my college assignments. The different coloured sections are a good idea so you can find the subject you are looking for quickly. I would recommend it to anyone taking a course in beauty therapy. Having returned to college to retrain I was worried about revision and exams but this book makes it easy!
A disappointing lack of depth, 02 Mar 2002
Although this book was satisfyingly weighty, this was not reflected in the depth of coverage of the topics covered. The artificial nails content was so brief it could have been gleaned from the instructions from a supermarket kit! However,if you already have some core textbooks this could prove useful for revision-if only to remind you how much extra you actually know yourself.
Essential!!!!!, 16 Nov 2001
This book is my bible. It contains everything you need to know about Beauty Therapy, explaining each part bit by bit. It was extremely usefull when doing all of my essays! I don't know what i would have done without it. This is the book to by when studying Beauty therapy!!
An excellent reference book for beauty therapy, 12 Nov 2001
This book is so easy to read, it has all the essential material I needed to complete my beauty therapy level 2 and 3. It has been a great help to me in my new role as a supervisor in a very busy salon. I would recommend anyone embarking on a beauty therapy course to buy this book!

Why not fill your "pasture" with multi-colored "cows"?, 30 Dec 2005
Q: What's this book all about? Godin: This is a book about how and why to grow. It's not a book of facts or logical reasoning. Instead of lecturing you about how important and wonderful it is to do scary, brave, and remarkable things, [this book] paints a very different picture for you. My colleagues and I are intent on slipping some subversive ideas into your subconscious...ideas that will help you dream bigger dreams (though they might cost you some sleep as well). We believe one way to get past [what we call] the growth paradox is to avoid addressing it head-on. Instead of warning you about the dangers of stagnation, or promising you benefits of growth, we've decided to tell you some exemplary stories instead. Stories that are easy to read, memorable, and, most important, useful parables for putting growth to work in your own organization. Q: What's the "growth paradox"? Godin: Most organizations are paralyzed, stuck in a rut, staring at the growth paradox. On one hand, they understand all the good things that will come with growth. On the other, they're afraid, petrified that growth means change, change means risk, and risk could mean death. Nobody wants to screw up and ruin a good thing, so the organization just sits there, motionless. Q: Individual contributions by your 33 colleagues aren't credited. Pretty unusual, perhaps even remarkable. You identify them. Why not credit them? Godin: We did it because it makes it easier to read the book as a whole, to avoid being interrupted by the noise your brain makes as it shifts gears from one voice to another. That and it lets you guess who wrote what. Those who have read any of Godin's earlier works already know that his thinking is highly unconventional as he relentlessly asks conventional questions such as Why? Why not? Are you sure? How do you know? What if? Have you thought about...? He delights to churning up waves atop gray matter. Heaven knows, he has opinions of his own. Also opinions about those opinions. However, to me, his greatest value as a thinker is his role as what I call a "provocateur of the intellect." That is to say, most of his best ideas focus on how to help others to formulate their own best ideas. What we have in this volume is a synthesis but NOT a homogenization of what 33 business thinkers have to say in response to two questions: 1. If being remarkable is the only way to grow, how to become remarkable? 2. If the only barrier to being remarkable is one's ability to persuade associates to make it happen, how to do that? It would be inaccurate to say that the responses are "all over the map" because, in fact, there is no "map." Within the responses, however, are what can correctly be viewed as time capsules of intellectual stimulation. Their impact will vary from one reader to the next. For me, some had significant impact; others none whatsoever. When we first see a purple cow, it is remarkable. But after seeing hundreds.... What is remarkable this morning is merely familiar tomorrow (or this afternoon) and ho-hum thereafter. According to Godin, "A big moo is an extreme purple cow, the remarkable innovation that completely changes the game....Yes, a purple cow is what you need, but the big moo goes a step further. In order to grow [whatever] at the pace the markets demand, you and your colleagues must find the big moo, the insight that is so astounding that people can't help but remark on it." I agree, while presuming to suggest that the process of "remarkability" proceeds at a high rate of speed. To repeat, what is remarkable this morning is merely familiar tomorrow (or this afternoon) and ho-hum thereafter. Ultimately and inevitably, the value of what Godin and his colleagues offer in this book will be determined entirely by the value of the ideas which they generate in the conscious and, more importantly, the unconscious mind of each reader.
Donna L. Cohen Author "GO BIG or Stay Home!" is BIG MOO FAN!, 05 Nov 2005
Stories to inspire, motivate, and call you to action to do something - like "remarkabilize" your business! Seth Godin hits home with a collection of 33 contributions to creativity! All the contributors and Seth Godin have elected to donate the proceeds of this book to charity! We all struggle to relate to one another by "fitting in", but when we can catch someone's attention first - by appealing to their creative individuality and their respect and interest when seeing it in others - then we can sell them! Another great job, Seth!

A 'must have' resource for NVQ Aministraton Level 3 students, 13 Jul 2002
This is a definitive resource, not only for NVQ students but also for their advisers and assessors. I recommend it to my students as their 'best friend' when an adviser or assessor is not immediately available to answer queries. It is written around the standards and is invaluable in de-mystifying NVQ language, providing excellent examples which make the subject matter understandable and real. As an adviser and assessor I have found it useful in giving me some extra ideas and alternative approaches.
I found this is very useful and easy to understand, 29 Mar 2001
It is full of useful information that will help you with any tasks given at college . It explains each unit in detail and covers all criteria that needs to be covered, gives useful tips that will help you at work and hints of types of evidence you could use. It includes self tests that test your knowledge and what you have learned. If you are studying for your NVQ in administration Level 2 buy this book! I must add that I was very impressed with amazon for delivering this book quickly and in perfect condition.
Poor, 26 Feb 2001
I needed a book to help me through my secretarial course work. I didn't find this book helped me at all. I did pass - and gave the book to my local Christian Aid shop. I think it should be more practical. I don't think the writer ever worked in an Administration office. It just is not true to life.
Used at school, now used at work, 02 Feb 2001
When I did my NVQ at school, I used this book and found it really useful. I know co-ordinate Admin and tell my students to use it. Its clear, concise and easy to read. Which is helpful, as all students understand it, no matter what intelligence level they are.
Does not include ALL the optional units, 27 Jun 2000
This book presented me with a lot of additional help, although when I choose my optional unit I was dismayed to find that this book didn't include it.

For me, some had significant impact; others none whatsoever. When we first see a purple cow, it is remarkable. But after seeing hundreds.... I agree, while presuming to suggest that the process of "remarkability" proceeds at a high rate of speed.

I approached the book with curiousity about how such a complex issue as H.R recruitment could be approached from such an apparently strange aspect? I soon became hooked into the story, overcame an initial 'prejudice' about using 'fairy stories' to explain serious issues related to senior management and literally could not stop reading until the end was reached. This book will suit any manager who is prepared to embrace an 'off the wall' writing style, in order to discover or confirm ways of selecting the 'right' people for the 'right' jobs and the outcome sequiturs.
A must for all H R managers, 28 Jun 2008
A modern fable obviously written by an iconoclastic style of manager. Don't be put off by the title, this is a really valuable 1 1/2 hour read. His ideas will transform the way we select managers in my organisation from now on. Now I've read 'Pixie Dust' I hope he writes again.
The formula for success, 27 Jun 2008
Recruitment has long been overcomplicated. Pixe Dust does exactly what it purports to, it really does make you think and change the way you recruit and manage your people.
An easy to read, thought provoking book with an extremely powerful message, written on two levels it provokes you to you change your methods whilst enjoying the tale.
This will undoubtedly be a best seller and provide support for one of the most crucial aspects within leadership and management.

Office Skills - AAT Foundation, 24 Feb 2006
Although this is useless part of the AAT qulification, the book has tried to make it interesting, not the authors fault that AAT try sqeezing more money out of students for unnessesary units.
Excellent!, 20 May 2004
I was given this book and it has proven a godsend. Sensible pragmatic and realistic throughout, it can be readily anglicised and used. Actually used!! This book brings together so many of the management theories and concepts you read of elsewhere and through the use of simple one page documents makes them easy to implement. For the first time ever, I actually stopped reading a management book to implement several of the tools, I could see how easily they could immediately make a big difference and did not want to wait. If you like the One Minute Manager series and would like to know how to make them real - try this. I will be using this book as a reference manual for years. Thank you Kraig and congratulations on an excellent excellent resource.
Really Usefull Tips for New and Experienced Bosses, 09 Feb 2004
Kraig Kramer's book is full of good ideas for getting the best out of your people and your company. It is easy to read and generic enough for at least 50% of his ideas to be relevant to the readers's own business. Some of his examples of how to praise & reward people are a little "American" in their "over the top" sincerity for the European manager but that detracts little from the book. I would recommend any General Manager to read it, not just CEO's as the title suggests.

Good book!, 03 Mar 2006
The influence of ambition and power in the strategy and management of organizations is something that exists but is rarely talked about. All of us have thought that what happens at our companies does not happen -or at least not in the same degree- at other firms. This book proves that what each one of us believed to be "exclusive" of his or her company is in fact an endemic disease that sooner or later affects all organizations. The whys and hows of these situations are what this book explains in a clear, graphical and pleasant way. Well documented, with real examples and a fine ironic touch, it is an interesting book with conclusions applicable not only to the business world but to all types of organization. A book really worth taking the trouble to read!
An amusing and Clarifier book, 01 Mar 2006
The fable of the sharks explains to us the relationship among the the macroeconomic changes and the micro-economic ones (specially organizational) in the world of the companies, using for it real and amusing examples. It is a book that one reads like a novel and that makes you think, helping to form a simple and clear image of how the political interests and matters impact in the march of the enterprise and how at the same time they can help or to hinder their growth and their success. I recommend to all those that are in a company in phase of organizational change that you read it and try to find a parallelism with their reality.
