Fanatastic festival fun, 12 Jun 2008
What a great book for all potential festival-goers, specially those who want to see all sides of festival-going, not just a list of what to see and where to go. I recommend this to all music lovers, and not just those with children in tow ...
Great book - everyone music fan should have a copy, 16 May 2008
I stumbled on this book quite by chance via a series of obscure links. Why isn't it being advertised or promoted anywhere??????
Its great - loads of handy info and detail, not just on festie listings, but also on stuff like the history of the UK festie scene, what's best to cook, what to avoid etc etc - all in a tongue-in-cheek style and not all pompous and serious like the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet books.
The author clearly knows her stuff and obviously spent a lot of time going round dozens of festivals to produce this. The end result is well worth it - everyone who has seen my copy has thumbed through it for ages and tried to borrow it, lol.
festival lover, 08 May 2008
A lovely, portable companion written with verve, experience and the true passion of a devoted festival-packer. I would happily recommend this book to anyone interested in music and the festival experience, even to the point of sneakily putting a copy in the backpocket of a passerby. It's affordable, high-quality and totally worth it when you're in your tent waiting for the next stage performance.

Funny, thought-provoking and unique!, 24 Nov 2007
This third book by the Raven brothers is absolutely brilliant. Unlike any other travel book you are likely to read, the Linger Loco is tear-wateringly funny, candid and insightful. This book is reminiscent of the travels of Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman, yet so much more genuine; these guys have no support crew of employees sorting their visas, arranging accomodation, providing medical care or streamlining the trip. And their enthusiasm for their unsscripted, itinerary-free adventure is really refreshing, compared with the bratty outbursts of McGregor and Boorman. I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Long Way Down' genre, but wants a more down to earth, humour-filled read.

There are four books in this series, the first focusing on folklore and belief, the second two on scottish festivals, and the last on smaller local festivals. McNeil has created an amazing rescource for those interested in distinctly scottish folk culture. I first found these books in my local college library, and needless to say they had only been taken out twice in the 40 years that they had them there! But having found them, I realised their great value, especially as the angle is so specific - giving them such a personal feel - and I've taken them out ceaselessly ever since, till buying my own set There is great detail in the research behind each book, and each subject area. The first book tackles witchcraft, faeries, druidism and pagan culture's comfortable merging with new faith. Songs and poems of remote and sometimes vanished communities breathe life into each chapter. The following two books tie together the new and old faith and how they sit together in festivity. Marian explains the symbolism behind the practices, and ties each to roots in ancient pagan culture. She also counterbalances what can be a dry subject with her stories of locals - and their peculiarities! The fourth book is equally delightful - and my friends and I have spent hours reading about the celebrations of the villages and towns we come from. 'The Silver Bough' is a far less intense counterpart to Frazers 'The Golden Bough', both easier and more interesting to read. This whole series has to be recomended to anyone who enjoys scottish folk tales and culture, as well as people searching for some explanations behind beliefs and practices local to them. It is also great for those who are researching or following the seasonal festivals of the year - wiccans, witches, pagans, druids and the like and who live in scotland - as you can find out the uniquely scottish way in which the seasons were marked, and perhaps ressurect a few practises yourself!
