A Bit Sketchy , 01 Jul 2008
There's no doubt that the styles in the books are fabulous, really beautiful and elegant. It's a good source of ideas. But, in terms of D.I.Y hair styling, the step by step guides are quite vauge. Some styles start with instructions such as 'blow dry into curls', which is actually very difficult to do with most hair types, and no instruction is given in the introduction on how to achieve this. A basic explanation of commonly used techniques wouldn't have gone amiss. For example, saying 'disguise hairband with hair from ponytail' doesn't tell me how to do that, and the pictures don't help.
I was also hoping for a range of styles which dealt with different hair lengths (most off the models in the book have exceptionally long hair), which makes eighty percent of the styles irrelevant to girls with medium or short hair.
Fantastic!, 05 Jun 2008
I recieved this book this morning, and even though I had been waiting a while for it, it was definately worth the wait. For less than £7 theres 62 hair designs, each with photo step-by-steps.
With some hair books, I find that they have very few styles that brides/bridesmaids/prom girls will go for because the majority are catwalk styles. This book is very different. Most of the styles can be worn and the rest can be adapted slightly.
Definately well worth the money.
Excellent, 27 May 2008
By FAR the best value for an upstyle book I've seen in a long time. Patrick cameron is the most well known and I have all his books too. Davis Bitton ( this stylist ) is on par with him and this book is a great investment
Amazing!!, 24 Jan 2008
This book is well worth the money... I've been buying loads of hair books online and this one has been by far the best and cheapest, I cant believe it's less than £7. The step by step instructions makes doing fancy hairstyles easy!

I bought this book about 6 years ago when I lived in the states. I was looking for a website on how to care for curly hair. I thought I had wavy hair with lots of frizz and usually dealt with it by pulling it back into a pony tail. However, after finding this book recommended on a website, I bought it and followed the advice and found I had a headful of gorgeous, wonderful botticelli curls. I've never looked back.

i like this book. and tried the no poo method . i got to say my afro does feel sorf. my hair ranger from 4a to 4b hair .and my hair always dry after shampoo. i'm going to try the no poo method for a year and see if i retrain six inches. i think the book good in general. if you have 2a to 3c hair. but if you are 4a to 4b.she get black hairdresser to say get a mild relaxer. the author probably hasn't have a relaxer .and doesn't know the hell its bring .and the broken hair to and the burn scalp.but a part from that its a good book. you got to given her tips as no black hairdressing book .as even told me to for go shampoo. even thou my hair feel 100% better being conditioner washer.one cheer for the curl girl lorraine This book is brilliant!, 06 Feb 2005
This book is brillant, and has totally changed the way I look after my mind-of-it's-own curly hair. Since reading the book and following the advice given for looking after curly hair, I have actually started receiving compliments about my hair - a total first. I thoroughly recommend it!
A MUST for curlies, 04 May 2004
From reading this book, I now know that I was a wavy girl who, in failing to deal with the wave, cut my thick wavy hair very short for 20 years. Deciding to grow my hair at the age of 32, I didn't know what to do with the thick wiry mass that appeared. I bought endless expensive products to solve the 'problem'. However, this book has changed all that, and I now realise that the products, not my hair, were the problem! Demand that your hairdresser cuts your hair dry. Avoid sulphates and silicones in hair products, 'wash' with a tiny amount of very cheap conditioner (infrequently), comb with fingers only, turn your head upside down and apply a light, clear, silicone free gel, and watch your hair become manageable, soft and curly! It works! It may be obvious advice for some readers, but it wasn't obvious for me, and it has saved me pounds in my pocket and hours of my life! Four stars because the only thing I dislike about the book is that it is bulked up with 'tongue in cheek' confessions from 'curly girls'. I loathe this confessional sort of thing, would prefer to be a 'curly woman', but realise that I'm probably too old, grey and curly to appreciate curly humour...
Great advice for product-abusers!, 27 Mar 2004
I found this book to be informative and helpful. After trying a few of the home remedies, I am now a convert to the strategy that this book describes. The author has included some great interviews with curly-haired girls and even though some of them sound way-out, it's good to read how others have dealt with their unruly and frustrating hair! Well worth it.

very informative, 02 Apr 2008
This book covers all the basics of hair care and scalp problems. It gives home recipes to every hair type and discuss all forms of hair treatment such as hair straigthening, colour etc. The chapters of the book are well divided and it covers everything you need to know to take good care of your hair. The book discuss hair conditioner and what is meant by it and the diferent types of hair conditioner but does not recommend specific products available in the market. Overall the book is very informative and I do recommend it.
The author has also his own line of hair care products which can be purchased either at John Lewis or his website, though I have not tried the products yet.
What a great book, 17 Nov 2006

Its an utter waste of money. Very old fashioned, with drawings that appear to be written for a child. Even so the illustrations are not very clear - photos would have been better. The cover belies the quality of the information inside!
Good for beginners, but that's all, 03 Jul 1999
If you already know how to do basic braiding, don't bother with this book. It's great for complete beginners, but doesn't deal with anything more advanced than a french braid. "More Beautiful Braids" is a bit better, but is still extremely lacking.

The author has also his own line of hair care products which can be purchased either at John Lewis or his website, though I have not tried the products yet.
What a great book, 17 Nov 2006
I originally borrowed this book off a work colleague, having got half way though reading it i decided i wanted my own copy to be able to refer back to. Also a great xmas prezzie idea!!!
A fantastic informative book, 17 Nov 2003
This book has everything you need to know about hair, how to treat it,wash it,condition it.It also talks about the different types of hair, and addresses hair and scalp problems. A good all rounder
Dont't buy this book!!!, 28 Mar 2008
Its an utter waste of money. Very old fashioned, with drawings that appear to be written for a child. Even so the illustrations are not very clear - photos would have been better. The cover belies the quality of the information inside!
Good for beginners, but that's all, 03 Jul 1999
If you already know how to do basic braiding, don't bother with this book. It's great for complete beginners, but doesn't deal with anything more advanced than a french braid. "More Beautiful Braids" is a bit better, but is still extremely lacking.
Excellent practical and effective advice on hair loss, 15 Oct 2000
You may find that only half this book is relevant to you - but it is still well worth purchasing. The author explains in clear rational language the processes of male pattern hair loss and how this can be controlled - with or without drugs. The sections on herbal reatment and the importance of diet are excellent - my own experience testifies to the effectiveness of these recommendations.
A Lifesaver in the the sea of snake oil treatments., 28 Mar 1999
Mr Kobren - Kudos to you. I am tired of being ripped off by unscrupulous snake oil salesman. Your book has enlightened me and made me an aware consumer. I am now regrowing my hair thanks to your informative, educational and outstanding exposure of the hair loss industry. I recommend that every balding man and woman consult Kobren's hair loss bible before starting any costly and potentially damaging hair loss treatment.
A Truly Inspirational and Informative Book!, 28 Feb 1999
This extremely well written book is truly The First COMPLETE Guide to Preventing and Treating Hair Loss. Kobren's approach is quite refreshing. He provides the reader with every thing he/she needs to make an informed decision about combating hair loss. After reading his book I had a better understanding of what my options were and what to avoid. I was able to relate to his personal struggle which gave me a sense of kinship with the author. I think that his efforts have already had a profoundly positive impact on this insidious and parasitic industry. I was horrified to see what had happened to The Hair Restoration Casualties and was left with a feeling of empowerment after putting the book down. I refer to it almost on a daily basis. It's much easier to turn to this handy guide than to search the net for info which is usually conflicting. Kobren takes a strong stand and tells it like it is. He doesn't pull any punches and that's what makes this book so powerful. I recently began to listen to his radio program in LA. His sincerity is at times overwhelming and adds to his credibility. His delivery is both inspiring and compassionate. Even though he tries to bring new subject matter to each show he is still willing to go off topic to answer all the questions that come his way, no matter how silly some may be. He treats people with the utmost respect and ads a sense of dignity to talk radio that is seldom heard. I admire this man more than mere words can say. He has been able to bring attention to this devastating problem in a way that no one in history has ever been able accomplish. He has answered my countless e-mail questions with intelligent and enlightening answers. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kobren for what he has done. He has provided me with hope and I can't thank him enough. I know it's been said here before, but God bless you Spencer. If you believe in karma, your in for a wonderful life. If I could give it TEN stars I would!
A MUST READ FOR ANY BALDING PERSON, 19 Feb 1999
This well written book is easy to read and very informative. The reader can gain the knowledge and experience of the author without having to spend thousands of dollars for "scam" treatments. I, like many balding people, have had many questions regarding the different procedures that are available today, but never knew where to get good, objective information. Here it is. Outlined concisely, it provides you with all the information you would need to make an INFORMED decision about what is best for you. It is amazing that it took someone this long to meet the needs of thousands of men and women. An easy read. Highly recommended.

Davis Bitton ( this stylist ) is on par with him and this book is a great investment Amazing!!, 24 Jan 2008
This book is well worth the money... I've been buying loads of hair books online and this one has been by far the best and cheapest, I cant believe it's less than £7. The step by step instructions makes doing fancy hairstyles easy! Want Fab Curls? Buy this book!, 14 Nov 2008

This was not the book for me as I wanted to cut my 2 little girls hair and all it had in it were bobs with fringes, but for someone with a bit more experience, has useful tips.
very informative, 02 Apr 2008
This book covers all the basics of hair care and scalp problems. It gives home recipes to every hair type and discuss all forms of hair treatment such as hair straigthening, colour etc. The chapters of the book are well divided and it covers everything you need to know to take good care of your hair. The book discuss hair conditioner and what is meant by it and the diferent types of hair conditioner but does not recommend specific products available in the market. Overall the book is very informative and I do recommend it.

I think I said it all. Good Job!
A masterpiece - fascinating, illustrated and definitive, 12 Mar 2008
It's pricey but, oh my God, it is worth every penny.
This is a book which has to be seen to be believed. It is amazing that 5,000 years of hairstyles can be covered so thoroughly and so interestingly.
This is not your usual glossy "one step up from a fashion mag" collection of a handful of photographs with a more-or-less vapid accompanying text. This is the business - the authoritative work. Nothing else like it before it came out in 1965, and nothing to touch the latest edition (which is updated to the year 2000).
Here's the deal. For every period, there is an essay with contemporary quotes (many of them very funny) giving the clearest insight available into the hairstyles of men and women, rich and poor, fashionable and conservative - covering, also, beards and moustaches. After the essay, there are pages of line drawings illustrating a cross section of about 20 hairstyles for the appropriate period. That is, 20 for men. Then a separate page of 20 for women. This is in itself remarkable, since men's styles generally receive much less attention than women's. Each drawing is given a date and an explanation, e.g. whether it was fashionable or conventional, or which individual wore it (if a famous person). You are talking about literally thousands of images here.
For earlier periods, the fashion might not change for 100 years. But by the time the book reaches the modern period, the book is giving you the low-down, and the plates of 20 varied examples per sex, for every ten years. It's amazing.
The book was originally designed for the theatre, so that authentic styles could be adopted. But it quickly became a cult for fashion historians and it is compelling reading for the general reader - whether as a piece of social or art history, or as a source of brilliant ideas for interesting and original styles which could look good today.
A MUST!, 30 Jul 2002
This book displays an incredible achievement of many years of detailed research, covering 5000 years of 'Fashions in Hair', It's the definitive research book of 'Period Hairstyles', containing a wealth of historical facts both educational and inspiring. ...a MUST!

Nice, but not very instructive, 21 Apr 2006
The photos are good, the cover looks professional, but I must say I was somewhat disappointed when opening the book. There are cuts for all ages, and for both women and men, but basically they follow the same pattern: part hair in sections, cut lover line, cut remaining sections. Or for layered hairstyles: part hair, cut lover line, hold remaining sections in certain angle and cut to desired lenght. Not very specific. I had hoped for some more detailed guidelines, such as size of hair sections, length of different layers, or techniques for the finishing touch, in order to achieve the desired look, but did not find them. As for the resulting hairstyles, a few look ok, some look nice because the models have good hair, and the rest have hair endings sticking out, ugly bumps, or simply look like a box placed on top of the head. Not quite the effect one might want. The book has some nice recipes for home made hair products, and will probably be fine for cutting small childrens' hair, or for persons who are not that fussy about styles. But the rest of us might want something more professional and detailed.

I've never looked back.
curl girl review, 31 Jan 2008
i like this book. and tried the no poo method . i got to say my afro does feel sorf. my hair ranger from 4a to 4b hair .and my hair always dry after shampoo. i'm going to try the no poo method for a year and see if i retrain six inches. i think the book good in general. if you have 2a to 3c hair. but if you are 4a to 4b.she get black hairdresser to say get a mild relaxer. the author probably hasn't have a relaxer .and doesn't know the hell its bring .and the broken hair to and the burn scalp.but a part from that its a good book. you got to given her tips as no black hairdressing book .as even told me to for go shampoo. even thou my hair feel 100% better being conditioner washer.one cheer for the curl girl lorraine This book is brilliant!, 06 Feb 2005
Quite difficult for a beginner, 10 Jun 2008
The Best Hair Loss Book I Ever Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 14 Feb 1999
Wedding hair, 09 Nov 2002
I borrowed this book from my hair dresser for my wedding. I used it to do my own hair and some of my bridesmaids. The book gives step by step easy directions that anyone can follow. It was a huge help for my wedding day!
Excellent book, 06 Aug 2002
I bought this book to use for my wedding hair style and it didn't let me down (although lots of hair grips helped!). I am pretty creative anyway but the step-by-step pictures were great for following the styles to perfection and allowing me to achieve "the look". Books like this are difficult to find and I will be holding on to mine for several years, or at least until I go for a short hair-do !
Not for Beginners, 17 Jan 2002
I was looking for a book which would show me how to create simple but elegant styles for everyday wear. As other reviewers have said, the book is really good in that it shows how to do different styles in a step by step way, but most of the styles are very elaborate. I would classify most of them as wedding hairstyles rather than everyday ones.
Excellent, 27 Apr 2001
This is an excellent book. For a learner i don't think you can find a better book.I have learnt so much from it.it even gives you the type of accesories to use and also how to prepare the hair before styling and also the products to use. The instructions and the photographs accompanying them are so easy to follow ,the hairstyles are superb, and of the latest trend.I don't think i have ever come across such an informative hairstyle book.
Very effect simple methods of dressing out hair., 08 Dec 2000
This book has brilliant techniques for producing stuning hair styles. Which look more difficult than they are. It proves when you know the secrets of Patrick cameron you are able to enter his league of hairdressing (a great confidence acheivement a must for any hairdresser.) i found all the step by step instructions very easy to understand.my friend had this book but i thought as a hairdresser the book was essential for me to proceed my career and have fresh and unique hair styles. an excellent book just as good as his first edition.
