For anyone wishing to use essential oils to treat minor ailments this book really is the one to buy. The writer gives recipes for making your own blends. There really is a wealth of information in this well-researched and well-written book.
a real must have!!!!, 18 Nov 2008
i brought this book years ago and refer to it often. It has a solution for almost any ailment, along with natural solutions for your home, your children, your mind,pets,garden,cooking....in fact this book is a real must have.If you love aromatherapy and all things natural, then you will love this book.Buy it and enjoy it,you will treasure it for years to come.
Great for beginners!, 03 Feb 2008
I'm new to the world of Aromatherapy and this is the first book I've ever bought. It's easy to follow and well-written. I can honestly say it was a brilliant buy and I've already mixed some face oil for myself, which works like a dream! It's packed with 'recipes' for everything from face oils to flea collars!
The One, The Only..., 28 May 2007
Aromatherapists I know (including myself) recommend this book highly above all others, not just for the beginner seeking some basic knowledge and starter blends, but for the seasoned pro who requires an almanac of tried and tested information.
Since getting into Aromatherapy, I've read many books on the subject, but this is the one volume I consistantly refer back to. Whenever I am going away for a while and find it necessary to pack a portable essential oil kit, this book is always packed along with it - there's everything in here anyone might need, for any occasion.
I even took this book away with me on my honeymoon!
Honestly, I cannot say enough good things about this book. If you are interested in Aromatherapy and do not own this, then shame on you! Buy yourself a copy immediately!
I recommend this book, 01 Dec 2006
The Fragrant Pharmacy is a book no home should be without. When I bought it years ago I had no idea that essential oils were so potent and could be used completely effectively for all kinds of ailments, and from starting out with a lot of scepticism, this book has converted me. I think if I had to keep only one book it would be this one. Who wants to be hanging about in doctors' waiting rooms picking up germs from the next ill person, when you can keep a stock of all the commonly used essential oils in your own home - with the added benefit of being so fragrant and pleasant to use as well. What I like even more is that my children have grown up with first hand knowledge that these natural remedies work and I'm sure they will pass them on to their children too when the time comes. When they've got a headache, cold or a sore throat, they say Mum can I have some steam please! Obviously its the oils added to the water and the vapours that do the healing. I've learned how to treat, and treated in myself minor burns, sinusitis, impetigo, herpes cold sores (these used to be the bane of my life, now I don't fear them at all) and Candida, to name but a few. In my children I've also treated chicken pox, urticaria and ringworm. My daughter stepped on her heated hair tongs with a bare foot one morning before school, burning the arch of her foot. With a foot soak in ice cold water followed by an application of lavender oil she was walking to school half an hour later. I will be buying this book as a Christmas present for my sister this year.

This is an extremely well put-together and comprehensive book for any therapist using essential oils. I refer to it constantly and really enjoy all the details about the history of the use of plants and oils. I would not be without it.
Well recomended!, 14 Mar 2006
Was recommended this book by a friend. It's the most complete one I've seen! Very good for reference too. It's so easy to understand what can be mixed with what and how to use the oils and even extract the oils! I'm a beginner at all this but this is a great alround book! The only down side I would say is that I use another book to make sure that the plant I want is correct for there is no colour in the pictures. Hope this helps. Take care all!
well structured, 05 Feb 2006
a well desingned and structured book also interesting for herbalism. all oils are listed in alphabetical order by their commen name but can also be found by the plants latin name. it includes herbs which should not be used in aroma therapie for information purpose only which can be usefull for general herb use and herbal remedies. very good book.

I love this book and I always refer back to it for quick reference. If you want to get started use this as it helps to understand what goes with what and how easy using aromatherapy can be.
It really is complete, 08 Sep 2008
This book really has everything you need in it. There's a whole host of ailments to soothe/cure and recipes/blends to try. Also gives you details of which oils to buy for a basic first aid kit which proves invaluable.
Great Stuff, 11 Jul 2008
This book is a great one. Having just started on the aromatherapy road, this book has tonnes of great advice from recipes to background information on subjects. It is very well organised with clear defined sections. I would recommend this book to aromatherapy personnages of all levels.
One book - two titles, 11 Apr 2008
An excellent book, but just to point out if you're buying several aromatherapy books from Amazon, that this is the same book as 'The Fragrant Pharmacy' by the author: under a different title, in a slightly larger format, and with a less pretty cover!
A diverse and enjoyable book, 06 Apr 2008
I find myself quite often dipping into this book as it covers the use of essential oils in so many different ways - from remedies, to cosmetics, to household cleaning and cooking. While it is a mine of information, my own experience of the recipes is that I haven't always found them to be effective - but then I'm not an aromatherapist. I still feel this is a valuable addition to my apothecary bookcase, and have learnt a great deal about the use of essential oils from it.

The Fragrant Pharmacy is about using essential oils for medicinal purposes. This book is very, very good. It covers a hell of a lot of common complaints and what you can do to treat them yourself. The book is easy to understand, with simple recipes that anyone could blend. The author has researched her subject well, and even though I know quite a bit about aromatherapy through courses and other books, this book is one of the best that I have come across and I enjoy using it on a regular basis. This author has also written The Fragrant Mind, which is another fantastic book, this time dealing with emotional problems. This pair of books should be found on the shelf of every parent because between the books, the oils, laughter and consideration every family should be able to deal with life's problems. The author has also written a Fragrant Sensuality. I haven't bought that one yet . . . but I soon will!
Brilliant book, 25 Jun 2004
I love this book! I bought it as I wanted to try and use aromatherapy to boost my eldest son's morale and make him feel better about himself (he's dyslexic and has a lot of down days at school). This book was much better than I expected. It's well written; the author really knows her subject and must have spent many years researching it. It's simple to understand and easy to follow the recipes given. The author has also written The Fragrant Pharmacy which is about using the oils for medicinal purposes. This is also a great book and I can't recommend the pair of books any higher! I'm looking forward to buying more essential oils so I can have fun mixing them with the aid of these two books!
Rather dour reference book., 24 Jul 2003
A thorough grounding in how essential oils can have a positive impact on our mental and emotional well being. The bulk of the book is a directory split into two sections. The first is an A-Z of emotions and the oils that can be used. The other is a list of oils and their personalities, categorised by human personality groups., e.g florals, fruities, seedies, woodies, etc. Mandarin, for example, is a fruitie and is gentle, kind and loving. It can be used to counteract depression and grief while being soothing, calming and refreshing. There then follows two pages describing the mandarin person. The first half of the book explains what we know about the workings of the brain and the mind-body connection. This is followed by the nitty-gritty of how to use and blend oils. This is a great reference work, but for some reason it left me a bit cold. It has an `American' feel, there are lots of cases from the authors' experience and she is very keen on recipes for blending and the detail put into the oil personality types gets a little tedious. My aromatherapy teacher has recommended I read Tisserand for his lyricism as well as his knowledge!
An excellent aid for both medical staff and patients, 24 Jul 1999
As an aromatherapist working in both in-patient and community psychiatry, this book gives an invaluable insight into how aromatherapy can aid the mood in conjunction with orthodox medication. My copy of The Fragrant Mind has done the rounds with many of the psychiatrics and nursing staff. So much so, that I haven't seen my copy for a while! After reading this book many of the staff have taken a keen interest in aromatherapy - much to the pleasure of the clients, who have found the service so stress reducing that they would like aromatherapy available 24/7!

Clear reference book, 14 Nov 2008
I have this book to check the properties of all the oils I use or want to use and it is an essential for quick and clear reference! It really is what it says on the cover without all the extra rubbish that takes you off track from what you really need to know! An essential book!, 29 Oct 2008
This book is invaluable to the student or qualified practitioner with in depth information on many essential oils, including some rarer ones and those not in use.It is truly the definitive encyclopaedia. It represents exellent value for money. I wouldnt be without it. A Massage Therapist's Bible, 22 Aug 2008
Take care all! well structured, 05 Feb 2006
a well desingned and structured book also interesting for herbalism. all oils are listed in alphabetical order by their commen name but can also be found by the plants latin name. it includes herbs which should not be used in aroma therapie for information purpose only which can be usefull for general herb use and herbal remedies. very good book. great choice, 14 Nov 2008
Another brilliant book by Ann Wormwood!, 25 Jun 2004
Not "most comprehensive" but useful, 14 Feb 2008
I have to challenge the title of "Most Comprehensive", there are other books that I consider more comprehensive. Having said that, I have found it a very useful addition to my aromatherapy books and I do reference it quite often. I find that I use it in conjunction with the dictionary of essential oils and The fragrant pharmacy (which I think is a bit more comprehensive).
The title promises too much, 16 Dec 2007
Although helpful and with good info, this book is far from complete and barely scratches the surface of the subjects it catalogues. I would catagorize this as a good starter book. It is sufficient as a cross reference to others, but more often than not, this book has no entries beyond the most basic (health) conditions and essential oils
Excellent, 19 Jul 2006
This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to practice aromatherapy within the comfort of their own home. The book explains the history of aromatherapy & then goes on to the A-Z. The A-Z includes the essential oils & all the conditions it's used to treat & other treatments that can be used in conjunction with aromatherapy e.g. Acne, Acupunture etc. The Appendix has a list of all the hazardous essential oils, oils that are not to be used during pregnancy, oils that must not be used on people suffering from Epilipsy and good combinations for bathing etc. I found the book informative & very useful!
An Amazing Book, 01 Feb 2006
Aromatherapy an A-Z is a first class book. I have used it as a health 'bible'/encyclopedia (along with a wonderful herb book ~ The New Holistic Herbal by David Hoffmann) for the last 13 years and refer to it constantly. Almost (!) all the information you could ever need on all aspects of aromatherapy from treatment and prevention of specific illnesses, history of plant use & methods of oil extaction, to cosmetic use (including recipes for cosmetic products), all in an easy to use A-Z 'dictionary' format. Includes information on related practices such as Yoga and Reflexology etc Everyone interested in their own health should own a copy of this insightful and indespensible book.
** N.B. I highly recommend buying this edition rather than the 2005 edition published by Vermillion ~ it contains exactly the same information word for word, but is of a much higher quality in terms of the materials used (paper printing etc).
Enjoy!

If you want to get hold of a copy (which I highly recommend!) ~ try to get hold of an older edition (the 2000 edition still has exactly the same content as this latest edition) you can still get this older edition from the Random House on-line bookshop (who have taken over CW Daniel ~ the original publishers' books), and now also from Amazon.

I'm new to the world of Aromatherapy and this is the first book I've ever bought. It's easy to follow and well-written.

Really good beginners guide, 14 Feb 2008
I got this as one of my first aromatherapy books, its a really useful beginners guide. There is a section that details each oil, its physical and "emotional" properties which also includes (very importantly) notes of caution where necessary.
The book is well presented, easy to read and use as a reference.
Aromatherapy make easy and fun!, 14 Jun 2007
I was looking for a book that gave a rough but imformative guide to aromatherapy and it certainly delivered. It's great for a beginer (like me) but it's also a great reference guide for the more experienced. The infomation is well writen, to the point but also very informative. it includes all the main branches of aromatherapy, to give the reader a well rouned view of the whole subject. This book is also fun to read as it's colouurful! i really didn't want to buy a book full of writing and no pictures, as i knew i was more likely to put it down. but i read this book in two days and have learnt so much. A bad point is that it assumes the reader is a bit dim in the explanations of things (although that's probably because i am a science sudent)
Overall i think it's a great book and well worth buying.

Another brilliant book by Ann Wormwood!, 25 Jun 2004
Enjoy!

I have a comment however, about the latest edition of this book published by Vermilion.. Don't buy this book! It is of VERY poor quality (the paper used for the pages of the book particularly).
"A great book for students", 25 Oct 2008
I found this book really informative during my aromatherapy course, it has all the information you need including the history of aromatherapy, health and safety issues, plus great diagrams of the plants, and also tasks throughout the book to help you along.
I found this book easy to understand and also 'interesting' in the way it is presented.
Essential study for Level 3 Beauty Therapy students!, 14 Sep 2008
Whilst teaching Level 3 VTCT Aromatherapy; this book was an essential reference guide; providing many opportunities for creating appealing and informative lessons. I recommended this book to my students; and many of them who purchased this book found it invaluable for their studies. It is a methodical and extensive book that covers all aspects of Aromatherapy theoretical knowledge; and the illustrations are exceptionally detailed and specific. I am a particular fan of providing students with mini tests at the end of their lessons. This helps consolidate learning and provides useful feedback to the teacher. This book helps both students and Lecturers tremendously in this respect.
Great study aid!, 23 Jun 2007
I'm currently studying aromatherapy and I'm finding this book really useful! It covers all the basic aspects you need to know including the history of essential oils, health and safety, business aspects aswell as covering many essential oils and how to mix them for different ailments.
The best thing about this book is the tasks. There are spaces for you to answer questions and fill in diagrams which I find helps learn things much quicker!
Must for aromatherapy students!
Excellent, 31 Dec 2005
This is a small book, but packed with information. Although not as technical as the Salvatore Battaglia book, it contains almost all the basic information needed for VTCT Aromatherapy assignments. That, & it contains fab diagrams of the plants which can be copied for said assignments!

Take care all! well structured, 05 Feb 2006
a well desingned and structured book also interesting for herbalism. all oils are listed in alphabetical order by their commen name but can also be found by the plants latin name. it includes herbs which should not be used in aroma therapie for information purpose only which can be usefull for general herb use and herbal remedies. very good book. great choice, 14 Nov 2008
I love this book and I always refer back to it for quick reference. If you want to get started use this as it helps to understand what goes with what and how easy using aromatherapy can be. It really is complete, 08 Sep 2008
