Good Nutritional Information but..., 26 Jun 2008
be aware that some of recipes have a lot of added sugar. Not good if you're on any kind of diet!
handy helper, 28 Mar 2008
This book is a handy helper with lots of great ideas. The recepies are simple to follw and not too footery. I wish they would advise which dishes could be frozen and there are no top tips to alter the meals - as they do in the magazing - but this is still a gem of a book and a perfect size to have in the kitchen.
My Favourite Recipe Book, 16 Mar 2008
Great, easy to follow recipe's that are guaranteed to be both filling and tasty. I highly recommend the Pumpkin and Bean Spaghetti (pp 66-67)!
The only down side is that this book - like many recipe books - expects you to be feeding a family. I would have liked to have seen more recipe's aimed at serving 2 or fewer people.
Sterling Stuff, 21 Nov 2007
This little book was great. Had plenty of choice, book was well set out and the recipies were very easy to follow and the majority were relatively quick to make (vital for when you get home from work starving and could eat your body weight in food before turning on the kettle nevermind the oven). Having tried two of the recipies on the weekend (and not having killed anyone as a result) I declare this book a success!!
A great lil' cook book, 28 Feb 2007
There's a whole series of these '101...' recipe books from Good Food Magazine, and they're all bang on the money. The lay-out is concise (there's a recipe on one page, and a nice, clear photo of what the dish should look like on the adjacent page) and the recipes are simple and easy to follow; no single recipe is broken down into more than 4 steps. Of course, I haven't tried them all, but those I have were all successful ('Baked Buttery Squash' is my most recent favourite). What's more, you hardly notice the fact that they're all low fat.
I wouldn't say this is the only cook book you'll ever need, but it's definitely a worthy addition to anyone's collection regardless of whether you're looking to lose weight or not.

I very rarely write reviews about products, but I felt the need to for this book. In my opinion this book should be in EVERYONE'S kitchen.
It has not only saved me money but it has improved my cooking skills. I like make everything from scratch, and thanks to this book it has helped me in this challenge. I can be 100% sure I know exactly what I'm eating - and this book makes it easy - and fast!!!
The only cook book you really need, 02 Sep 2008
All the reveiws can't be wrong....and they aren't. This simple book is truly fab. So many different recipes packed in between its pages. Easy to follow and lots of tips in addition to the recipes. It will now be the cornerstone of my kitchen.
The BEST cookery book EVER, 13 Aug 2008
I just received my new book (above title) and am positively drooling at the mouth.
The recipes seem extremely easy and very tasty and I cant wait to try it, especially the meal planner bit.
Extremely useful book, 23 Jul 2008
This is a great book for people who need to feed a family and are running low on inspiration. There are lots of dinner recipes in here (including a veggie section) and a selection of "quick fix meals" for when you are in a hurry. The book would be useful to a beginning cook because the recipes are very simple and not at all intimidating, but would also be useful to an experienced cook because of the sheer number of ideas. A more experienced cook could easily adapt the basic recipes with herbs and spices to make them a bit more sophisticated and exciting. I think this is a book that I'll be using a lot.
AMAZING, 26 May 2008
this is an incredibly good book for everyone; I'm a vegetarian but there were plenty of recipes for me anyway.
A very good buy which I highly recommend.

A few flaws, 18 Sep 2008
I can see how this might work for some people, but it definitely wont work for me. I have IBS which is triggered by dairy amongst other things, and a lot of these recipes have things that I cant eat suxh as butter and cream, although they do sound tasty.
However, my main concern with this book is the misleading information. Reference to good fats in butter and double cream, in my opinion, is complete nonsense. The fats found here are saturated fats, the bad kind. The 'good fats', or fatty acids, that are an essential part of our diet are found in foods such as nuts, avocados, olive oil and oily fish, NOT butter and cream. I think Neris and India should have put a bit more research into this before misleading their readers.
That said, there are some good points in the book, their overall mission i agree with, exercise more, eat better, lose weight.
Last 'diet' book I ever buy!, 14 Sep 2008
Like most women on the diet merry-go-round, I rush to embrace any new ideas for weight loss that appear easy and fad-free. Having ploughed through the introductory chapters where the authors describe in graphic detail their own battles with flab, I eventually got to the part where they divulge their weight-loss secrets. Unfortunately, there was nothing new here; it is basically yet another 'starve yourself for a while then start eating again' regime, extended into a book which could quite easily have encompassed a leaflet. Needless to say,I didn't follow it, but joined an exercise class, starting eating sensibly and have lost almost 2 stones in weight.
Jumping on the bandwagon, 28 Aug 2008
I am another one of those people whose life has changed completely due to this book. I look at food and health very differently than I did before. Granted, it could have been any low-carb diet because it's the low-carb lifestyle in general that has won me over. But if it wasn't for the witty true-to-life writing style of this book, I would probably still be yoyo-ing on low calorie diets! Thank you India and Neris, I lost tons of weight, I am happier and healthier and I have learned so much about food and on top of all that, I've become a cook! Always thought I hated cooking but now I enjoy it!
If you have already unsuccessfully tried every other diet, please give this a chance. It may seem drastic at first but you get used to it really fast. And it is absolutely one hundred percent healthy, do your research and you will find this out for yourself.
It worked for me !, 27 Aug 2008
I am not a diet-book person or one for "faddy diets". I saw this quite by chance at the top of the bestsellers list on Amazon at the end of Jan 08. I bought it on impulse as the time was right for me to do something about being overweight.
Once I committed myself to it (with the company of a friend - which was invaluable), it took me 6 months to lose 5 stone. I have remained stable at the weight I want to be now for a month. It's early days but I feel confident that I can keep to it, and all I can say is that it worked for me !
The basis of the initial diet is very low-carb - i.e. no potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, fruit whilst the majority of the weight is lost. You can eat any meat or fish, eggs, green veg and supplement it with "good fats" on the side - olive oil, butter, cheese, double cream etc. Once you have shifted all but about a stone you then gradually re-introduce low-carb foods to adjust back. It is a sociable diet and easy to adapt to eating out and around friends' houses - think roast dinner without potatoes but butter on veg / caesar salad with dressing but no croutons / cheese (and pate !) for dessert instead of puds !
A few of my friends have done the Lighter Life diet. It was never one for me because i knew that being off food completely for a quick weight loss would then make me panic when I was supposed to re-introduce them. I believe this is sustainable and has made a fantastic difference for me.
I would recommend buying the cookbook for some simple but effective recipes that both my husband and children ate quite happily.
Good luck !
This book needs to come with a health warning!, 18 Aug 2008
While I have to admire this book for attempting to address the issues that underlay a person's overeating, there's not much else to like about it. The "diet" has been put together by two amatuers with no experience in diets or nutrition other than having been on lots of diets in the past. Not a great place to start from...
It's interesting to read that the author claims this book presents a mediterranean diet when that clearly isn't the case. What they actually advocate is cutting out an entire foodgroup (carbohydrates). For the rest of your life. Which frankly, is just plain stupid.
Carbohydrates have received a bad rap in recent years but there's many different types and the authors show their naiveity by excluding the entire group. Put very simply, highly processed, simple carbohydrates are something we should exclude from our diet as much as possible. Complex carbs (whole grains) provide much-needed energy.
The diet advocated by these two woman is quite dangerous. Losing weight safely is easy - you need to burn more calories than you consume. Eat healthily (and most of us know what that means by now) and do regular exercise. It's the only sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off long-term.
Add this book to the enormous pile of faddy, dangerous diet books.

SIMPLY MOUTH WATERING, 30 Sep 2008
I have just spent my lunchtime pouring over this book, and I cannot wait to try the recipes out. Rosemary starts out with her usual splurg about dieting, and then explains about the Slim to Win Diet. There is a fat attack to start your diet, or you can simply personalise your own diet, and after looking through the book, you cannot fail by personalising. There are starters, lunches, recipes for meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians, and whole section on roasts and also a fail free christmas menu, and for those of you who have a sweet tooth a whole section on puddings. I simply cannot recommend this enough -

I simply cannot recommend this enough -
Easy healthy meals on a budget!, 04 Aug 2008
I got a copy of this book in the old cover style and it has definitely been a lifesaver.
All the recipes are easy, you don't need any fancy equipment and the dishes range from incredibly cheap to something to splash out on (Like the vodka chili!!) although the majority of them will definitely not break the bank.
Although it is a student cookbook I'd recommend it to anyone as some meals are impressive enough to serve to guests, but it also has fun family meals as well. All quantities are for 2 people so easy to divide or multiply up as well. I also like the snacks and standbys section at the end which has great lunchtime recipes.
This book was written by combining the Student cookbook and the Vegetarian student cookbook, so there are a lot of vegetarian recipes and a fair amount of recipes which are adaptable for vegetarians and non vegetarians. I found a few old favourite recipes in here but the grand majority are new dishes I'd never tried before and that made it fun as well.
Another thing I like about the book is each recipe is rated on how long it takes to cook and prepare, which is useful if you are starving. And the instructions are simple and concise so you don't get put off, without being patronising.
Best Buy for Student, 07 Oct 2007
Just purchased this book for my daughter who has just started uni. Although still living at home she has taken a sudden interest in cooking making me loads of luvverly dishes. The book is well laid out with easy instructions and the recipes are full of healthy ingredients which are easily accessed. I love the twist at the end of the book on how to make a banana sandwich!! I now know that when my daughter does move into accommodation she will be able to be self sufficient without pigging out on takeaways. Excellent stocking filler for all students

be aware that some of recipes have a lot of added sugar.

Inspirational garden and recipes!, 31 Aug 2008
Utterly beautiful book, filled with stunning photos and mouth watering recipes. Gives recommendations for varieties of each fruit/vegetable, particularly interesting if you grow your own. Arranged by month, and then into each fruit/vegetable.
Recipes include
Treviso Lasagne
Penne with Preserved Lemon and Avocado
Rosemary and Anchocy Encrusted Lamb
Fillet of Beef with Rocket
Baby Spinach, Pancetta and Roasted Almond Salad
Asparagus Pasta with Lemon
Mint and Pea Tip Risotto
Elderflower Fritters
French Apricot Jam
Cherry Clafoutis
All the recipes I've tried have worked perfectly. I love using this book for cooking and I love browsing through it - would make a greatly appreciated book for someone you care about!
extra veg inspiration, 07 Aug 2008
As a compulsive cook book buyer/collector/hoarder this was too good to miss, based on previous reviews I went ahead and bought this book and was not at all disappointed.
Some recipes are familiar and therefore comforting and others provide new ideas and inspiration, so much so I resorted to pilfering handfuls of lemon verbena leaves from my mother's shrub in order to try out the Verveine Sorbet recipe to much success.
This is a 'must have' cook book, the recipes are beautifully laid out and very clear, it is not a book for the complete beginner or unadventurous cook. If you simply enjoy food, cooking and browsing through recipes then this book is for you. The photographs and colourful design enhance this pleasurable experience and is excellent value for money as well as making a gorgeous present for a foodie.
Fantastic - all-year-round use, 05 Aug 2008
I bought this book for my mum earlier in the year, and borrowed it so many times I decided I needed a copy for myself!
It's fantastically laid out (I'm in the book layout business myself, and know a good one when I see one!) Really easy to use, full of great ideas for both gluts from the garden or those buy-one-get-one-free offers from the supermarket.
It's now permanently to hand in the kitchen (not one of those look through it once and put it away kind of books), each section being for the different seasons means it's going to be used all year round.
The only problem is now that I'm inspired to grow all sorts of things next year, so might need a bigger garden!
Treat with care, 21 Jul 2008
This is a fantastic book, especially for anyone with an overabundant allotment, but not for the beginner cook. You will need to have an idea of what you are making before you start as I find some of the quantities are a bit out - for the delicious spinach tart, serves 6, she recommends making a pound of pastry (I made it fine with 8oz) and the blackcurrant cupcake icing would have iced 40 cakes, not the 11 the recipe made!
If you only buy one cookbook make it this one!, 05 Jun 2008
I was given this book as a gift and since then I have bought it for three friends. It really is the best cookbook on by shelf.
I have not made one recipe from it that did not turn out fantastically well - and there's a fantastic combination of modern and old fashioned recipes, quick and easy and more complicated meals.
I don't have a garden or an aga or a double oven or any fancy cooking equipment and it is quite usable for the urban cook! There are so many brilliant recipes that it would be quite possible to cook just from this book all year long.
Also the book is so pretty, brightly coloured with two bookmark ribbons that it makes an ideal gift.

BUY IT!!! , 15 Sep 2008
I simply cannot recommend this enough -
Easy healthy meals on a budget!, 04 Aug 2008

Fillet of Beef with Rocket
Baby Spinach, Pancetta and Roasted Almond Salad
Asparagus Pasta with Lemon
Mint and Pea Tip Risotto
Elderflower Fritters
French Apricot Jam

The Best Diet Book out - Totally Life-changing, 02 Oct 2008
No other book that I have ever read has had such an affect on my life. I have tried every single diet there is going to try to loose weight and have had absolutely no success. I was about to give up and accept that I would be over-weight forever, when I heard about Marisa's book. I read it in one-sitting and have never looked back. I have now lost four stone and have never felt so happy and energetic. Marisa's programme has transformed my relationship with food, this really works and I would recommend everybody to read it.
Honestly life changing, 23 Sep 2008
I bought this book in mid-March of this year, based on three things. Firstly, I saw the segment about Marisa on Supersize vs. Superskinny, secondly I read an article in Elle magazine where the reporter found it very successful and thirdly based on the strength of the reviews here on Amazon. Being a natural cynic, I wasn't very convinced that it would work and before i read it I actually didn't want to not want chocolate anymore (although now i've read it i know why that was!It was just the sugar high and comfort i sourced in sweet, sugary things especially that i craved, not actual chocolate itself). However when the book arrived I took a weekend to read and absorb it and do the exercises and begin listening to the cd. Within a month I was feeling SO MUCH better: i was no longer bingeing on stodge, wheat, dairy and sugar now didn't feature in my diet and i was actually in control of what i ate and how much of it. I have honestly not missed pastries, cereals, milk, cheese, sugary sweets, cake etc. as I no longer see them as a food option when i see them. I have attended birthday parties where it has just been so easy to (politely) refuse cake and biscuits in favour of a fruit salad and i don't feel akward doing so. I am now 2 1/2 stone lighter, with only 1/2 a stone left which i KNOW will go forever! :]
Starting out as someone with a relatively small amount of weight to drop in the first place, compared to others who start with BMIs that put them in the very overweight or obese catagory, i am so pleased that i found this as it has given me the self confidence and motivation to do something about my weight before it ever spiralled out of control
I would recommend this book to anybody with weight issues or food or eating problems without a second thought! I am so grateful i found it when i did, and i will update when i reach my body's ideal weight range!
Definately works!, 23 Sep 2008
Having battled with weight control for many years and tried every diet there is, I was very sceptical about reading yet another book on the subject of weight control. However, 3 weeks on I have completely changed the way I think about food and how I eat. I have lost half a stone already without even trying, although it took me a week to wean myself off wheat and diary, but all my friends are telling how well I look and I definitely have more energy. This book is well written and easy to read.
Lots of pschyo babble and no advice, 21 Sep 2008
I bought this book based on the positive reviews on Amazon, but was very disappointed. The book is patronising and treats the reader like a child. I'm not going to lose weight solely by thinking differently and giving up key nutrients found in things such as dairy, cereals, etc. If you're looking for advice on diets etc. then don't buy this book. In fact, unless you believe that writing lists and changing the names of foods so that your brain doesn't want them e.g. call bread 'glue' so you won't want to eat it - I think that the human brain is able to know the truth - then don't buy this book.
Life changing, 12 Sep 2008
I bought this book nearly 2 weeks ago, and I have to say it is life changing. If you have a problem with food, emotional, overeating, comfort eating, any of these, this book is for you. I cannot begin to tell you how my life has changed due to reading this book. I have had a problem with food for all of my adult life. Diet after diet after diet, food has ruled my life, consistantly. And guess what, I have basically shed and gained the same weight over and over again. I was told about this book and went to the bookshop and looked at it, didnt want to do the exercises, didnt want to change what I was doing basically (ha, and she wonders why she couldnt get rid of the weight!!). Then I turned 40, read a bit more about the book, and with book tokens I had been given went and bought the book. I havent looked back. Food does now not rule my life. I am indifferent to it, and I have never been able to say that!! I have been tested to the limit, especially in past few days, hurt my back, (usually feel sorry for myself and "treat" myself), no, not this time. Relationship problems, comfort eat, no again!! Kids go to the takeaway and get my "fave" chips, I look at them while hun | | |
