Brilliant at the Basics., 01 Feb 2008
This book is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in first aid or who is considering ambulance work. It contains a comprehensive guide to immediate first aid. It is considered the bible among those who practice first aid. Of course a basic first aid course with a qualified instructor is a must for everyone, this book will provide you with a good reference guide. Simply the best available, 02 Nov 2007
Why this manual?
Because it is created by a collaboration of the UK's premier providers of first aid so you know your getting the best advice possible. Also teamed up with Dorling Kindersley having the reputation of being one of the worlds leading publishers of illustrated books make this manual the most accessible and easiest to use with the highest quality images and text and easy to follow step by step guides what more could you possibly want from a first aid manual.
Over the years I have seen many first aid manuals, however none of them have impressed me as consistently as this, quite simply this is the only manual I trust. Everything you need to know plus a little more make this a must have book that every home and business should not be without.
Online best alternative, 30 Jan 2006
many people are used to online books you can store them in your mobile and be almost sure always its within your reach and read it while your free... simply look search engine with keyword of first aid manual and see how much information are available most are updated to the moment no need publishing house... on other hand for those who wants printed material is nice book ilustrative but not animated like websites
An excellent must have!, 15 Mar 2004
This book is an excellent 1 stop manual for all the essential first aid techniques valuable to anyone. Essential for the home or work but don't just leave it on the shelf. encourage all the family to read and become familier with its contents. Well written with pictures and diagrams.
The Official Text for First Aiders, 10 Mar 2004
This is the official text for first aiders in the UK. It is quite well laid out, with plenty of graphic (but not gory!) illustrations of interventions and is easy-to-understand. As a Registered First Aid Instructor/Examiner I find the previous edition to have been better. For starters it was clearer on the management of the unconscious spinally injured casualty, whereas a bit of exegesis is required with this text to arrive at pretty much the same conclusion as the 7th edition (but just more subtly put - a purposefully grey area perhaps?). There are other flaws. Some of the graphics don't correlate with best practice, and the same can be said about the text in places. However, this is no fault of the book itself, which is a must-have for First Aiders as it reflects the official line on approaches and interventions. Flawed yet indispensable, with plenty of food for critical thought!

Chiropractors beware!!, 10 Nov 2003
Firstly I have never written or e-mailed any author before and I am taking time out to do this because of the remarkable effect this book had on my back pain. I have suffered from lower back pain for years and have visited numerous chiropractors, all of whom helped in some way in the short term. But if I did not visit regularly (at £25-30 per session) the pain came back, it was about a monthly occurrence. Last July I went with my family on holiday to Spain and the lower back pain kicked in on the second day, probably due to stress and the flight from Gatwick. It was so painful like a ripped muscle and virtually ruined two weeks holiday. Climbing into a canoe, for instance, with my seven year old daughter was excruciating. I felt like a pensioner just walking down the road, every step down a kerb had to be measured or it would send a shooting pain through the lower back. When I got back from Spain I decided to trawl the internet for a solution before booking more chiropractors. I came across this book. I began the excercises in August and I did not want to say anything until I had fully tested them out. I now feel (in November) confident to say I have rarely been troubled with my back since. What trouble I had was easily dealt with by the excercises and gradually even this pain receded. The back feels stronger than ever but you must follow what Jim says exactly and do the excercises initially every two days. Pity the poor chiropractors if everyone gets to read it!!!!
An excellent book on lower back pain, 04 Oct 2003
A well written book that takes great care to methodically explain the scientific basis for some lower back problems and their treatments, with many quotes from peer reviewed scientific papers. Jim Johnson also uses his fairly extensive experience of treating back pain to make the book a readable and practical one rather than just a dry tome. I read the book (all of it as instructed!) before trying the few simple exercises that are recommended. There has been a definite improvement in back strength in the 3-4 months since I bought it and, more importantly, a reduction in lower back pain. I still get some pain from time to time but it is considerably less. The key is to follow the exercise plan as laid out in the book and do it regularly. Once you have achieved the desired level of back strength you only need to do the exercises once a week for maintenance of the strength you have built up. However, as soon as you stop them you go back to square one. I would recommend this book for people who suffer from lower back pain - even if it doesn't help the pain it will probably help you understand what the problem is without being stuck in a particular treatment method like many other books.

Valuable lessons, 25 Jan 2006
After my own near-death experience with a kayak I wanted an easier way to learn than the hard way each time. This book takes the lessons from problems that people got into. Some stories of people who died. If you can learn lessons and be better prepared their deaths werent totally in vain. I'm a better kayaker now and this book has helped with that. At least my mistakes aren't so stupid now
A must-read for every kayaker., 28 Jun 1999
This book is a must-read for every kayaker, not just sea kayakers. These true, white-knuckle accounts drive home the point that the unexpected can and does happen, often with tragic results. It's too bad the kayakers who perished or were on death's doorstep in these stories did not have the benefit of reading this book first. It certainly would have sharpened their judgement and kept them out of harm's way.
Cautionary Tales Hit Home, 05 Feb 1999
I just can't let the first posted review stand alone. This is a book I read twice. Not because it wasn't well written. It was. It is so densely packed with stuff I needed to know that once through was not enough. The narratives are well crafted: concise, gripping - I felt like I was right there in the cockpit battling the waves, shaking off the salt spray, and bracing for dear life. The savvy sidebars are packed with right-on-the-mark stay/get out of deep trouble pointers...just the antidote for an anxious reader jarred out his complacency by these often harrowing cautionary tales. The book suceeded in a way I believe the authors intended. It's made me a safer paddler. I make many fewer assumptions that things out there will go well. I prepare for the worst and cut a lot fewer corners. I paddle alone a lot less often. I DRIVE away from a launch site, when conditions look borderline too challenging. The book has improved my judgment, doing the right things at the right time, without my getting wet. As an advanced beginner sea kayaker, I know I am at a high risk interval in my development as a paddler. The authors have recalibrated my margin of safety. It's a good thing. It's a great book.
one of the worst designed books i have ever tried to read, 26 Jan 1999
this book is produced by people who know nothing about books The format is so poorly designed that it is impossible to read. Very dissapointing. Hard to believe this book is distributed.

Not my cup of tea, but not a bad book., 06 Nov 2003
I found this book bitty and the lay-out messy. If you like mind-maps etc. this is probably the book for you, they're not my cup of tea. The book covers the basics of First Aid, and some general ailments such as blisters and cramp. I do not completely agree with some of the treatments, but they will do no harm. For example: as a sufferer of a severe migraine that runs in the family, and with plenty of friends with the same ailment (varying degrees), I do not believe that paracetamol will do a thing to help the sufferer - but it won't hurt. It also does not explicitly suggest providing a bowl next to the bed, a useful tip that can save the sufferer additional distress. Other gripes are along these very minor lines. The different ailments all have clearly marked boxes with the aims and needs, and any warnings or important comments. This makes treating an emergency straight from the book in a stressful situation much easier, as all you need is clearly marked and visible. For this reason I would recommend including this book in the First Aid kit. Even if *you* are trained, the person using the kit may not be. And at an A5 size, it may even fit. All in all it does the job but I much prefer a more technical book, one with columns rather than pictures with lines to corresponding floating text. "Your mileage may vary".:-)
Superb for beginners!!, 10 Jun 2001
I have just taken a First Aid course, and we used his book during the course. The guys that trained us were Fireman, and used this as a guide, it was so good, I have bought a copy!! All I need now is for someone to collaps so I can practice my new found knowledge!!
