Indispensable, 09 May 2008
Have had every edition and I still carry a copy in my bag. Anyone doing acute takes who thinks they don't need to reflect on some aspects of some cases will come to grief. I am reassured when I see junior docs carrying a well worn copy.
Brilliant , 05 Feb 2008
This new book is even better than the 6th edition as its tiny! Meaning it's even easier to put in your bag/pocket and delve into on ward rounds/acute takes when your unsure of diagnosis/what to do next!
possible, THE best medical book out there...of all time, 02 Jan 2008
Guys, and gals, this book doesn't even need an introduction. Being only a 2nd year medic, I thought I'd get this now for later usuage, but it really has helped me out so much already. From the handy revision of essential anatomy and physiology for key conditions, to the layout, including advice on OSCEs, emergencies and much more, this book truly is a life saver, and should be given to every 1st year medical student, as it will benefit them for the rest of their career. What are you waiting for, buy it now, and lap it up!! Invaluable!!
Must have for med students!!, 30 Dec 2007
This book covers all areas of internal medicine and surgery in a clear concise way and whats more is that its easy to carry around when your on the wards. This book covers everything from aetiology, epidemiology, clinical features through to the necessary investigations and management of varying conditions. I dont actually know a medical student who doesn't own it!
Perfect for medical students for several reasons:
- Easy to carry
- Includes medical pneumonics (they make its so much easier to remember)
- concise - makes a great revision tool to test your clinical partner
- covers such a broad spectrum of topics
- the radiographs, CT images, MRI section is definately worth a read!!
- it contains evidence-based medicine with easy links to websites
...could it be any better??
The best ever, a must have, 28 Jul 2007
This 7th edition of OHCM, while retaining the much loved concise and essence of the previous editions has been greatly revised, improved and updated. It contains a new chapter on radiology, new information on how to handle common calls and a wider coverage of medications and doses, clinical skills and surgery. The best feature has to be the integrated colour illustrations with pictures and cartoons; and tons of radiographs, CT images, MR1 images etc. The layout is very reader friendly. This is an invaluable study aid for plab and all medical exams. It also has a PDA version, and web links from the book for instant access to evidence based clinical information. This is a must have and if you have a previous edition it is worth the upgrade.

This has helped me so much during my pharmacology degree, and i recommend it highly to anybody studying a medical related degree. The layout is very easy to understand and read, and it explains everything in nice, clear terms. The book is exactly what is says it is, with no padding of the text but enough explanatory information so it's easy to understand! Grouping of conditions makes it very easy to revise for exams on specific subjects without having to root through huge amounts of textbook to find the certain drugs that are needed. Definitely a must have for pharmacology students, and students on related degrees. If the medical students like it so much, so should we! The only problem i have is how flimsy it is!

Excellent book for all health professionals involved in drug calculations, 09 Apr 2008
This book is the best book to sharpen your calculation skills. Very easy to understand calculations with given examples and formulas. Practicing the exercises in different sections that include a review of basic calculations, dosage of oral medications, drug dosage for injection, intravenous infusion, paediatric dosages and summary exercises with the answers. I recommend this book for all who are involved in drug calculations. It is execellent+++++.
Best book in its field, 02 Mar 2008
Love, love, LOVE this book! This is like the idiots guide to drug calculations. No time wasting! No pages and pages of reading! Just practice practice practice with explainations and answers. Why else would we all be raving about this book if its not excellent? Love it! I would not hesitate to recommend this book to everyone in healthcare responsible for administering drugs (I am a student midwife).
Recomendation for any nusing student., 24 Feb 2008
I would reccomend this book to any student nurse. I am now in my third year and I still use this book to refresh my memory before a drugs calculation test. It has lots of calculations for you to practice with and is a must if you struggle with things like IV calculations. Easy to use and understand. The best book I have found to help me with my drugs calculations.
Nursing Calculation *****, 07 Dec 2007
I found this book really helpful to get me started with drugs calculations in my first year. Now I am in my second year, I still dip into the book when I have a test coming up to refresh my memory about the basics. I would recommend this book to any nursing student. It is really easy to understand and if I can do it, anyone can!!! I had another nursing calculation book that I actually gave away because I could not get on with it but I love this book
nursing calculations for the terrified, 14 Apr 2006
This book is really great for mathematicians of the future and those of us whose only maths is trying to work out our credit card bill!
Having a maths test in the first module of the common foundation year, is no joke. Panicking, I set off to find a useful book and finding the uni recommended one out of stock, I picked up this one instead. I couldn't have made a better choice. The book covers everything you need to get you motivated for learning nursing calculations.
The author begins with a self-assessment test. You then move on to basic maths, from the usual add, subtract, multiply and divide, to working with fractions, decimals and converting one to the other. One of my problems, is working out where the decimal point should be, particularly on numbers <1. This book explains this point very easily.
The book then goes on to discuss the various nursing calculations required for drugs, which are too numerous to cover here, but include general information, calculations related to bodyweight and paediatric calculations. The latter really interested me, as I am in the child health branch.
At the time of writing, I am still working through the general maths section and actually finding it challenging and yes, enjoyable! It did help in my maths test and the only points I lost, were for rushing through the questions too much.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I recommend this book very highly, to anyone entering the nursing profession. It is equally suitable for students, as for those qualified nurses, who want to revise their maths. It should, in my opinion, be on the recommended reading list, of every UK university.

It's all in the mind, 14 Sep 2008
I read about Erickson as the pioneer of NLP, and his work in hypnosis and psychotherapy and was intrigued. This book is a great introduction to Erickson. His style of communication which involves the use of skilfully vague language patterns, rapport skills, and conversational hypnosis techniques, forms the basis of the Milton Model in NLP.
These stories are case studies, people with all sorts of problems, and very interesting solutions, and great stories.
This guy is a genius. From bedwetting to alcoholism, to repression, I was particularly inspired by a very short story about the Turmahara Indians, and how knowing and thinking about their special abilities can increase your energy levels. If it works for me, it might work for you.
There was one story about how he treated one woman who was sexually unresponsive, and through using his storytelling method caused her to have an orgasm in his office without touching her! Before reading this book I had not realised how easily influenced we can be by indirect suggestion, and how powerful his techniques are.
Essentially this is a book of anecdotes, with the author who is himself a psychiatrist giving an explanation of the methods and techniques being used by Erickson.
Apart from the therapeutic benefits, if you read this book you can really improve your communication and storytelling skills if you follow the principles used here, so I would recommend this book to aspiring story tellers.
Think of Erickson as someone who was a master of effecting life altering personal change by being able to communicate on a deeper level. Applied to yourself you can most likely imagine the effect you can have on yourself and others and how you can win friends and influence people by learning this skill.
For more case studies, check out Conversations with Milton H. Erickson Vol 1 by Jay Haley. You might find situations in there that relate to issues in your own life. In fact, use the look inside feature and check out the index. I found the chapter on public speaking and performance anxiety quite helpful. Also, check out the Patterns of... Erickson book by Richard Bandler, which gives a a complete analysis of Erickson's induction methods.
I hope you find this review helpful, and, if you do please click yes.
So much to discover, 14 Sep 2008
An easy read; well written; an excellent resource for training therapists and health professionals and those that have been in the business for sometime.
This book is full of gems. Every story can be viewed on so many levels. You can discover skills and techniques and ideas from the stories while absorbing and enhancing your natural ability to share the right story with the right person at the right time in the right way to make a difference to so many people's lives.
A thought provoking book on the power of language!, 07 Aug 2008
I discovered this book after reading a book on how the 'Milton Model' can be used in NLP. Although perhaps primarily aimed at therapists, I found the stories very readable and along with the commentaries, perfect examples of the power of language. It seems to me that Milton Erikson had a phenomenal insight into human behaviour and much can be learned from these, 'teaching tales.'
Perfect 10, 12 Jun 2008
Undoubtedly one of the best books I've read on Milton Erickson.
All the short stories are well written, vivid and always make a point. Aesop would have been proud.
It is not a technical manual, more like an analogy or an allegory.
I'd read it all over again easily.
His voice will stay with you., 01 Jun 2008
Don't often leave reviews but this book is well worth every penny. As a hypnotherapy student there are mountains of (great) theory and scripts, but to have actual condensed case studies from the master is both inspirational and essential for understanding everything else written about him. Brilliantly presented in a way that can be read as a recreational text, and as you would expect each case seems to instantly commit itself to memory.

Nursing research for the biginners and the experienced practitoners, 22 May 2006
I was in fact thrilled and energised when I read this 2nd edition of Prof. Parahoo's book!
Like the first one, this edition guides you through the basic ethics and progression in the nursing research process, except that, it keeps you up to date with nursing knowledge and research. It also includes extra appropriate chapters reflecting the evidence-based practice phenomenon.
Currently, I am in the final year of my degree and in the process of an extended literature review. By following the pertinent chapters in this book, I was able to draw together the majority of the theoretical starting point for my study. The relevant guidance and recommended link proved more than accommodating for my learning needs. Doing research without a good book is like `building castles in the air', (Parahoo, 2006)
I would robustly recommend this book for anybody embarking on research in nursing as well as in other health related subjects.

Nursing Research Principles Process and Issues, 19 Mar 2004
After trying to find a book which would help with a difficult year 2 nursing exam I found everything I needed to know and more. The text is easy to read but still remains in sufficient depth to gain a good grounding for research. I will be using it to work along side my degree in year 3. Invaluable to evidence based care with every aspect of research covered in a way to enjoy and learn more. Brilliant!!!

Go for it - if you deal with patients - you need it !!, 06 Nov 2003
Not a bedside book - but essential for anyone who deals with people and their medications. Cheap for the information it carries . Helpful..., 14 Aug 2003

Of course a basic first aid course with a qualified instructor is a must for everyone, this book will provide you with a good reference guide.
Simply the best available, 02 Nov 2007
Why this manual?
Because it is created by a collaboration of the UK's premier providers of first aid so you know your getting the best advice possible. Also teamed up with Dorling Kindersley having the reputation of being one of the worlds leading publishers of illustrated books make this manual the most accessible and easiest to use with the highest quality images and text and easy to follow step by step guides what more could you possibly want from a first aid manual.
Over the years I have seen many first aid manuals, however none of them have impressed me as consistently as this, quite simply this is the only manual I trust. Everything you need to know plus a little more make this a must have book that every home and business should not be without.
Online best alternative, 30 Jan 2006
many people are used to online books you can store them in your mobile and be almost sure always its within your reach and read it while your free... simply look search engine with keyword of first aid manual and see how much information are available most are updated to the moment no need publishing house... on other hand for those who wants printed material is nice book ilustrative but not animated like websites
An excellent must have!, 15 Mar 2004
This book is an excellent 1 stop manual for all the essential first aid techniques valuable to anyone. Essential for the home or work but don't just leave it on the shelf. encourage all the family to read and become familier with its contents. Well written with pictures and diagrams.
The Official Text for First Aiders, 10 Mar 2004
This is the official text for first aiders in the UK. It is quite well laid out, with plenty of graphic (but not gory!) illustrations of interventions and is easy-to-understand. As a Registered First Aid Instructor/Examiner I find the previous edition to have been better. For starters it was clearer on the management of the unconscious spinally injured casualty, whereas a bit of exegesis is required with this text to arrive at pretty much the same conclusion as the 7th edition (but just more subtly put - a purposefully grey area perhaps?). There are other flaws. Some of the graphics don't correlate with best practice, and the same can be said about the text in places. However, this is no fault of the book itself, which is a must-have for First Aiders as it reflects the official line on approaches and interventions. Flawed yet indispensable, with plenty of food for critical thought!

many people are used to online books you can store them in your mobile and be almost sure always its within your reach and read it while your free... simply look search engine with keyword of first aid manual and see how much information are available most are updated to the moment no need publishing house... on other hand for those who wants printed material is nice book ilustrative but not animated like websites

Go for it - if you deal with patients - you need it !!, 06 Nov 2003
Not a bedside book - but essential for anyone who deals with people and their medications. Cheap for the information it carries . Helpful..., 14 Aug 2003
Excellent Research textbook, 06 Jul 2008
This book is easy to read with a comprehensive range of methodologies etc. Really useful for Student Nurses undertaking annotated bibliography assignments. Recommend
Parahoo, 02 May 2007
This book was a godsend when writing my critique and proposal; and I'll be using it in my dissertation. Parahoo writes in a style that is easily quotable, and the glossary has probably saved my assignments! My tutor is also a huge fan of this book, I would definatly recommend it
Nursing research for the biginners and the experienced practitoners, 22 May 2006
I was in fact thrilled and energised when I read this 2nd edition of Prof.
