Excellent book for all health professionals involved in drug calculations, 09 Apr 2008
This book is the best book to sharpen your calculation skills. Very easy to understand calculations with given examples and formulas. Practicing the exercises in different sections that include a review of basic calculations, dosage of oral medications, drug dosage for injection, intravenous infusion, paediatric dosages and summary exercises with the answers. I recommend this book for all who are involved in drug calculations. It is execellent+++++.
Best book in its field, 02 Mar 2008
Love, love, LOVE this book! This is like the idiots guide to drug calculations. No time wasting! No pages and pages of reading! Just practice practice practice with explainations and answers. Why else would we all be raving about this book if its not excellent? Love it! I would not hesitate to recommend this book to everyone in healthcare responsible for administering drugs (I am a student midwife).
Recomendation for any nusing student., 24 Feb 2008
I would reccomend this book to any student nurse. I am now in my third year and I still use this book to refresh my memory before a drugs calculation test. It has lots of calculations for you to practice with and is a must if you struggle with things like IV calculations. Easy to use and understand. The best book I have found to help me with my drugs calculations.
Nursing Calculation *****, 07 Dec 2007
I found this book really helpful to get me started with drugs calculations in my first year. Now I am in my second year, I still dip into the book when I have a test coming up to refresh my memory about the basics. I would recommend this book to any nursing student. It is really easy to understand and if I can do it, anyone can!!! I had another nursing calculation book that I actually gave away because I could not get on with it but I love this book
nursing calculations for the terrified, 14 Apr 2006
This book is really great for mathematicians of the future and those of us whose only maths is trying to work out our credit card bill!
Having a maths test in the first module of the common foundation year, is no joke. Panicking, I set off to find a useful book and finding the uni recommended one out of stock, I picked up this one instead. I couldn't have made a better choice. The book covers everything you need to get you motivated for learning nursing calculations.
The author begins with a self-assessment test. You then move on to basic maths, from the usual add, subtract, multiply and divide, to working with fractions, decimals and converting one to the other. One of my problems, is working out where the decimal point should be, particularly on numbers <1. This book explains this point very easily.
The book then goes on to discuss the various nursing calculations required for drugs, which are too numerous to cover here, but include general information, calculations related to bodyweight and paediatric calculations. The latter really interested me, as I am in the child health branch.
At the time of writing, I am still working through the general maths section and actually finding it challenging and yes, enjoyable! It did help in my maths test and the only points I lost, were for rushing through the questions too much.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I recommend this book very highly, to anyone entering the nursing profession. It is equally suitable for students, as for those qualified nurses, who want to revise their maths. It should, in my opinion, be on the recommended reading list, of every UK university.

This book is easy to read with a comprehensive range of methodologies etc. Really useful for Student Nurses undertaking annotated bibliography assignments. Recommend
Parahoo, 02 May 2007
This book was a godsend when writing my critique and proposal; and I'll be using it in my dissertation. Parahoo writes in a style that is easily quotable, and the glossary has probably saved my assignments! My tutor is also a huge fan of this book, I would definatly recommend it
Nursing research for the biginners and the experienced practitoners, 22 May 2006
I was in fact thrilled and energised when I read this 2nd edition of Prof. Parahoo's book!
Like the first one, this edition guides you through the basic ethics and progression in the nursing research process, except that, it keeps you up to date with nursing knowledge and research. It also includes extra appropriate chapters reflecting the evidence-based practice phenomenon.
Currently, I am in the final year of my degree and in the process of an extended literature review. By following the pertinent chapters in this book, I was able to draw together the majority of the theoretical starting point for my study. The relevant guidance and recommended link proved more than accommodating for my learning needs. Doing research without a good book is like `building castles in the air', (Parahoo, 2006)
I would robustly recommend this book for anybody embarking on research in nursing as well as in other health related subjects.

What a fantastic book.........you must buy it !!!, 15 May 2006
This book is fantastic for all 2nd year nursing students about to embark on the critique module..........I was dreading mine, then I bought this book and it wiped all my fears away. Most of my large cohort (55 of us) have this book too, and swear by it. Well done Mr. Parahoo on another great book !!!
Nursing Research Principles Process and Issues, 19 Mar 2004
After trying to find a book which would help with a difficult year 2 nursing exam I found everything I needed to know and more. The text is easy to read but still remains in sufficient depth to gain a good grounding for research. I will be using it to work along side my degree in year 3. Invaluable to evidence based care with every aspect of research covered in a way to enjoy and learn more. Brilliant!!!

Excellent, 30 Nov 2006
I am a Paramedic & find this to be an invaluable reference that is small enough to be carried around. It explains things clearly & simply, so would also be useful for the layperson.
A good introduction but I'm sure there are better out there, 16 Aug 2006
I am presently studying a Pitmans Medical Secretarial and Audio Transcription course and was given this dictionary as part of my course.I already have a knowledge of (human) biology so know a lot of the terminology and their meanings but am obviously coming across a lot of terminology I am not familiar with and which are not in the book but their abbreviations are. This I am finding confusing because I am not sure if the abbreviation has the same meaning as the word I am meant to use and find myself a majority of the time 'googling' for the word and terminology or using an online medical dictionary which at times does not have the words I am looking for either. There are a lot of words missing that I feel should be there such as 'radius' and 'ulna' and other body parts and there are words in the dictionary I personally don't think should be there such as 'cyberstalking' and 'e-mail'.The advantage with this book is its size and the hardwearing plastic cover-a good size for both the pocket and bag but I am sure there are other and better medical dictionaries available which I myself will look for.I have given this book 3 out 5 because it is a good introduction if a person is starting out as either a medical secretary or in the medical profession but I would strongly recommend looking for and purchasing a better medical dictionary, even if it is larger than this particular book.Hopefully the 25th edition will be better revised.
Bailliere's Nurses Dictionary, 07 Dec 2005
As an Occupational Therapist of many years I still constantly come across terminology that leaves my head spinning! This dictionary is invaluable in helping me to understand what problems some of my clients might face thus helping me to help them. I find that my students also find it useful.
A god send!, 02 Jan 2005
I bought this because I am doing a reflexology course and found that some words in my anatomy and physiology books just dont make sense! This is an absolute god send, it explains words in laymans terms. I dont know what I would have done without it.
Even us scientists need help!, 12 Jul 2004
As a Biomedical scientist working in a medical laboratory, you will often find yourself coming across terms that are either new to you or which you know but do not fully understand. A copy of Baillierie's Nurses' Dictionary was purchased for me at Christmas and I can trully say that it has been the most useful present, which I have received. There are still some terms missing, which would come in useful but I'm sure will be added in future editions, but for the size of book has an amazing amount of content with the addition of some useful appendices. Recommended for nurses and anyone who needs to come to terms with medical terminology (including scientists).

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!, 27 Sep 2008
After reading the reviews on Amazon about this book, I decided to use a long overdue voucher to buy it. As new 2nd year nursing student, it helps to have some books that you can return to again and again. After only having this book for 2 weeks, it's already proving it's worth. This and the Marsden should be the recommended buys for any student!
As one of the previous reviewers stated, the only downside - the size and weight!! At least I'm building muscles whilst learning!!!
the imfamous doorstop, 19 Feb 2008
This book is big engough to squish spiders in their tracks, act as a makeshift door stop and provide a great stand for the televisions as well as many other uses that student nurses moving away from home might need as well as being one of the best resource text books you could buy!! Covers almost every disease as well as its management and pharmacology and general information on body systems..you wont be carry this to uni unless you do weights but no the less its essential!
Hospital and home, 07 Dec 2007
This book is great for finding out in great detail all about your chosen illness. It goes into fine detail about many illnesses and conditions. Very good book - I would recommend it
Nearly There......, 02 May 2007
I am now coming to the end of my pre-regestration course and it has been a tough but rewarding three years. I purchased this book at the beginning of my training and I am so glad I did so. This has been a bible for most of my nursing theory and practically based modules. It was brilliant during the first two years and very comprehensive. In third year this book has still been a good friend, i am on the degree programme and it is perhaps no longer as in-depth as i need, but what one book is at this level? I did however use it to provide the structure and direction of my work and research, the case studies in particular are very useful when analysing theories and frameworks in order to apply them to real situations.
A solid introduction to the academic aspects of nursing and a superb aid and guide as your knowledge increases.
A relevent Book Pre & Post Registration, 22 Mar 2007
Having used this book as a Student, and Now 4 years post Qualification, I found this publication to be excellent as a study guide, reference for assignments and now as a reference point to refresh my knowledge when need be. I have recommended this book to collegues and have even convinced my Ward manager to purchase this book for the ward refrence library.
I like this book so much, Im ordering the latest edition.
A must have to Students and Qualified nurses.

Succinct but detailed and pocket sized and handy to have!, 01 May 2008
5 straight forward chapters detailing key elements of ward working. Some chapters may seem like `common sense' i.e `know who your patients are' but a good reminder of the basics.
This book is very black and white, blunt at times yet informative with no room for misunderstandings.
Whilst some information you would expect the qualified Nurse to know, (integrated care pathways and interviewing the patient), but for newly qualifieds or those lacking experience / confidence there is lots of information on the `basics' - observations, monitoring etc with abbreviations explaining what they mean and why they are used.
Excellent sections detail all major anatomical and physiological systems in the body detailing features, common disorders, treatments and appropriate nursing care. A well documented section on pharmacology covers topics such as the misuse of drugs act, injection sites for S/C's and I/M's and for the totally inexperienced details of drug classification and warning signs of possible poisoning.
An ideal guide for all Nurses, and the size means it can be carried around with ease, a good handbag size to pull out and read on breaks.
Survival guide for any nurse!!!!!!!, 30 Apr 2008
This is a fantastic book for not only nurses but also student nurses. It covers everything that you need to know from, procedures such as ECG's and Urine Tests, to a section decidated to Pharmacology. As well as having in depth details on numerous procedures and drugs the book also contains a section on systems such as the renal and nervous systems for example. These are then broken into sections containing illnesses/problems and why they occur, and the nursing care required. The book also covers a large amount of A and P, and would be excellent for the Specfic Health Needs and Individual Health Needs module due to the amount of information it contains. The book it self is also small which I find great as you can pop it in your bag and use it to refer whist on placement. I know several other student nurses who have brought this book and also rave about it and would strongly reccomend it.
invaluable!!!, 26 Jul 2007
As a student nurse and in the first two years post qualifying i found this book was great to keep nearby as a quick reference guide to most things you might come accross. As a student it was rarely out of my pocket or bag...Highly recommended for any student nurse or newly qualified!!!

Found this book great. It's small so easy to take to placement and has tons of information from Asthma to Parenteral nutrition. It's like a more informative mini dictionary. I found it money well spent.

Parahoo, 02 May 2007

Nursing research for the biginners and the experienced practitoners, 22 May 2006
I was in fact thrilled and energised when I read this 2nd edition of Prof. Parahoo's book!
Like the first one, this edition guides you through the basic ethics and progression in the nursing research process, except that, it keeps you up to date with nursing knowledge and research. It also includes extra appropriate chapters reflecting the evidence-based practice phenomenon.
Currently, I am in the final year of my degree and in the process of an extended literature review. This book is a must have for all student nurses,it has all the basics to apply to everyday calculations. This will gain a student nurse or returning nurse to their profession who needs that bit of extra help with Maths. The Mock Tests are very useful to see how much you are gaining the knowledge within the book. This is a step by step book which i have found very helpful in my studies.
what a great book a must have!!, 19 Feb 2008
I only recieved my book two days ago and already i've improved. If your not good at maths or just haven't practiced in a while then this is the book for you it's brilliant. This book is a book that every student nurse or even nurse should have!!
How to master drug calculations, 19 Feb 2008
This book starts with the absolute basics and takes the reader through simple arithmetic problem solving and measurements. This is the basis for the calculation of drugs within a nursing environment and without this knowledge it would be impossible to calculate drugs. I found this particularily informative as simple omissions made at this stage could cause a major drug claculation error.
Chapters 4&5 introduced me to calculation of drugs and the different routes, followed by drug administration, particularily useful were the abbreviations that will be seen on the wards.
The mock tests at the end of the book are invaluable and will be used as a tool for renewing and updating knowledge through my training as a Paediatric Nurse.

Invaluable, 29 Sep 2006
Found this book great. It's small so easy to take to placement and has tons of information from Asthma to Parenteral nutrition. It's like a more informative mini dictionary. I found it money well spent.
Fantastic Book!, 27 May 2006
I am a student nurse and I found this book a brilliant guide to life on the wards. You will not regret buying this book its small enough for your bag but a wealth of information
Excellent Nursing Calculations Book, 12 Mar 2008
Ross & Wilson, 02 Aug 2007
This book has been used by ambulance staff for the past 20 years and is still a fine beginers book to anatomy and some physiology. Probably the Foundation Degree and BSc Paramedic would probably prefer a little more depth. Typical A&P books that are used by paramedics would be Totora, McHance, Matteli, and others.
great help with Anatomy and physiology..., 08 Apr 2007
This book is fantastic it really helps you get to grips with A & P. It does not have to be used with the Ross and Wilson text book, but that is how i used it. A great book for anyone on a nursing course or such like.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I re | | |
