I was worried, 27 Nov 2008
I was worried that this wouldnt work for me. I have smoked for 5 years, and have tried to stop maybe 4 times for differing lengths of time. I would be proud of days that I went a day without a fag; it showed strength of willpower i suppose.
I read the 1 star reviews about this book, and they confirmed what I felt must be true all along - this must be too good to be true. What I now believe having read the book, and extinguished the final cigarette, is that these people do not want to give up. No book, no program, no person in this world is going to make you stop smoking - except yourself.
So the way in which this book works. Well, as a smoker, you are aware of why you shouldn't smoke; i.e. the disadvantages. Smokers don't stop for these reasons though, otherwise we would all be non-smokers.
What is more interesting, is asking you to think (while smoking a cigarette) why you continue to smoke - i.e. the advantages. I can't list them here, that's what the book does, but as you read, you have a massive sense of realisation sweep over you. it is almost as though the truth about cigarettes becomes obvious.
I write this review, 18 hours after my last cigarette, feeling that I should be tearing my hair out dying for a fag. But instead I am feeling very positive about the next few days and beyond. I would recommend this book not just to people who wish to quit, but to people who smoke. The way in which it is different is that it makes you realise all the positive reasons that a smoker uses to smoke are illusions.
As I say ignore the people who say this book isn't that good, it is certainly worth a try. A book is a book, and as an inanimate object it is not going to prevent you putting a cigarette in your mouth and lighting it. Open your mind to what cigarettes are doing for (not to) you.
Provides a positive push... but is ultimately devoid of 'real' insight, 22 Nov 2008
First thing to point out, I didnt read the book until a long time after I had successfully managed to quit by reading 'The Nicotine Trick'. Curiosity got the better of me to see just why Carr was the de facto smoking guru. From my perspective this book has succeeded mainly from the positive message it instils in the reader and from persistant hammering home of the message. This can and has worked for many, but many aspects of the Easyway method have now been shown as bunk by Chris Holmes' marvelous book. It is definately worth a read, but in my opinion your money would be better spent on 'The Nicotine Trick' or 'Nicotine The Drug That Never Was'. These go further to the root of the problem rather than being mainly motivational (as Easyway is), and help you come out the other side understanding smoking better, and, providing the tools to quit successfully.
Ignore the 1 star givers!!!!, 20 Nov 2008
Read this book in 3 days and quit just like it said on the tin, been 3 weeks now and I already know i'll never smoke another cigarette in my life, and that feels amazing to say. Just like to also say that you MUST have an open positive mind to read this book, believe all that you are going to be told because 99% is true! If you start to disagree (you ARE kidding yourself) or have the opinion or feeling of "this won't work for me", "i'm too CLEVER for this to work on me", or "i knew all this already" (which I promise you don't, you may know some of it but not ALL of it, esp the STRESS/RELAXATION/BOREDOM part, because if you did you wouldn't smoke :0) like reading the 1 star givers posts seemed to have, then this won't work. However, if like me, you desparately want to stop then just give in to the book. Its not hypnotic like some 1 star givers have suggested, its just cold hard facts (a lot of which you will NOT know), and the reason for the repetition is that it is EASY WAY for the brain to store information (reasons for not smoking information in this case). Call it brainwashing if you want, but if it stops you from smoking then surely it HAS to be Positive Brainwashing if ever such thing exists. Allen Carr has made a lot of money from this, but hell he deserves it, he may have prolonged more lives than any top surgeon could ever wish for. READ IT, GIVE IN TO IT, DON'T GIVE UP, STOP.
It works, 04 Nov 2008
I have been a 20-40 a day smoker for just over 20 years I have never realy tried with any great conviction to quit, I have tried to cut down but never give up even tho for the last 9 years I've hated smoking and what its done to my family. I started reading the book and half way through I new I was going to give up, Its hard to explain but it was almost like a revelation; the blinkers have been removed I can now see all the benefits of NOT smoking. Highly recommend this book even if you only have a 50% chance of succeeding it has to be worth it for the cost of the book.
Tried, Tested and Failed - But I Loved It!, 27 Aug 2008
Having read this book I should say from the outset that this method did not work for me, however, I have lent the book to over 5 friends of mine (Sorry!) and all have managed to as soon as finishing the book!!
I can honestly say that this is a very honest and well thought out method for quitting and am very happy I read it, because, ever since finishing it, whilst I haven't managed to break the habit... I have hated every cigarette since!!!
Well Done!! If your a smoker... Please try this!!!

Well Done!! If your a smoker... Please try this!!! A slow burner, 25 Aug 2008
I picked this book up with anticipation, having read an extract of it that I thoroughly enjoyed. I expect more of the same laughs and bitter resentments, but was somewhat confounded by the full diaries. The books is more centred around Gray's plumbing of the depths of his past, heaping mockery upon himself, expressing disgust at the man he has become, and thinking about what his fifteen year-old self would have thought of his sixty five year-old self. The last forty pages are a particularly ponderous and heartfelt affair, and for my money the best part of the book.
Gray's musings on growing old, on the changes he has seen in society and youth during his time on earth, are all written down in thoroughly digestable text, rolling on in a way that is practically unputdownable. His death marks a tragic loss. A book that slowly wins you over, 01 Aug 2005
The blurb on the cover of this book says something along the lines of "the funniest book I've ever read". I certainly wouldn't go that far, but after a slow start, this book gets the better of you. Dry wit in generous helpings, accompanied with some more personal, intimate truths. By the time you finish it, you'll be surprised to find you were enjoying it it more than you thought you were. Gray is still at the top of his form !, 05 Mar 2005
If you have read Simon Gray's other volumes of diaries you will find this is a fitting addition to your collection. Gray's self-lacerating wit is still very much in evidence and despite his documented physical decay he avoids self-pity as he invites the reader into his world of cigarettes, writing and dining. I first read Gray's volume 'An Unatural Pursuit' and was immediately hooked by his penetrating observations of his fading professional fortunes. Whether or not you like the world of theatre is irrelavent for the enjoyment of this volume. The candid observations of this brilliant and witty man in physical and carreer decline are wonmderful.
Hysterically Funny, 10 Aug 2004
I found myself laughing out loud on public transport but was oblivious to the stares. The funniest thing I've read in ages - Simon Gray is a comic genius.
An amusing and moving personal journal, 15 Jul 2004
I enjoyed this book immensely and am rather bemused by the earlier reviews it has received here. The playright Simon Gray begins his diaries in his mid-sixties looking at the world around him and also back to his childhood. This is a hugely funny book, but also full of insight and honesty. Simon Gray has no illusions about himself and does not try to present a sanitised version of himself. He is frank about his faults and weaknesses and it is this that makes the book so special - it is refreshing to read a diary to which the air-brush has not been applied. Although Simon Gray is deeply involved in the theatre of course, this is not the main theme of the book, as it concentrates more on his daily life and key events from his youth. Despite this, there are some moving accounts of his meetings with his close friend Harold Pinter during the latter's experience of suffering from cancer. Once I started this book I finished it within 24 hours - a rare event these days when few books seem to inspire me.

Product Description
When he entered a residential treatment centre at the age of twenty-three, James Frey had destroyed his body and his mind almost beyond repair. He faced a stark choice: accept that he wasn't going to see twenty-four or step into the fallout of his smoking wreck of a life and take drastic action. Surrounded by patients as troubled as he, Frey had to fight to find his own way to confront the consequences of the life he had lived so far, and to determine what future, if any, he has. A Million Little Pieces is an uncommon account of a life destroyed and a life reconstructed.

Amazing, 02 Dec 2008
This book is amazing, heart wrenching and brutal. I could not put it down. It seems so honest and gives a real insight into what people go t hrough with alcohol and drug issues. It also shows how love can touch us and what a determined human being can achieve...
Read it, 29 Nov 2008
I read this a few years ago, loved the book and couldn't put it down, it's stayed with me since.
After reading I looked up the book to find similar ones, or other fans and came across the sequal (Which was available at my library too [:) and all the pages about if it's an autobiography or work of fiction. I don't mind either way, I enjoyed the book, and its sequal, and now want a copy for myself to re-read.
Buy this book, 16 Nov 2008
Ignore all negative reviews, media hype, preoccupations with how 'true' this account is...It is an excellent book, an excellent piece of writing, unique style, an addictive read, it pulls you in, engages - a purchase you shall not regret.
Great Read., 14 Nov 2008
I can understand people feeling dissapointed when they found out that parts of this book had been fabricated, it's because when we feel something is really and imagine it actually HAPPENING it has more appeal.
But in terms of the book, it is a brilliant read. Cannot put it down.
The writing is strange, but it is fitting for the story that is being told.
a work of inspiration, shock and total honesty, 15 Oct 2008
this is a book that shocks, disturbs but in the end inspires. i bought it for a wide range of friends with varied attitudes and backgrounds. they all without exception couldn't put it down and were moved by it. its about one man's inner strength, about total and utter commitment and a level of determination that should motivate anyone to confront anything. its written in a unique style which embodies the author's approach to dealing with his demons. even IF it is fiction or just embelished (as some people have alleged), if you don't come away inspired to fight your vices, fears and the dark periods of your life, you must be missing something. his sequel, my friend leonard, is different, but a must read too.

Very helpful, sound advice., 15 Feb 2008
Very helpful, sound advice. Includes anecdotes from recovering codependents, to highlight that we are not alone in our struggles with relationship issues.
A MUST READ!!, 03 Feb 2008
I found this book when i was in the most difficult experience of my life.
I could not understand why bad things always happened to me? what was wrong with me? Why did people treat me badly?
I took this book at face value thinking that if i took just one thing from it, it would be worth the purchase.
I began reading and got through the first two chapters and i cried for every page because i had finally found that it was not only me that felt the way i felt.
At that moment i realised i had to follow the book and do the things it suggested i did, some of the things were difficult but i did them with a little time and patience.
I am now feeling much better and would recommend this read to anyone experiencing difficulties which they are finding hard to overcome.
It was the biggest thing in my life to realise i am co-dependent and this book heled me regain my self worth and move forward with my life.
A Must Read, 07 Jan 2008
I am still only about a quarter of the way into this book, but it has already made me evaluate my life and how I view myself, my students and other people.
It made me realise that I was trying to care for and sort out everyone else's problems, which ultimately left me tired and depressed, when in fact by taking care of myself was ultimately going to be a much more positive way to help others. Taking care of myself was not in fact a selfish act, but by understanding that people need to face up to their own problems, then this was really the best way to help them.
I would strongly recommend that everyone reads this book. It's amazing how much of yourself or others that you start to recognise.
The most important book I have ever read, 12 Dec 2001
For years and years I struggled with the problem I was having not knowing what the problem was. Whilst reading this book the light began to slowly be switched on and I was horrified, - this was me! The author leads you slowly and carefully through the issues involved in being a 'co-dependant' and of course not all of them fit, but rather too many for comfort. The one down side I would say is the book didn't really leave me with a positive direction to take and I felt a little desperate. But I intend to read more and get healed!! Well worth the read.
A Must Buy, 01 Apr 2001
This book is written by an American because American's pioneered the Twelve Step Programme and the AA, Al-Anon and NA programmes that this book deals with along with most other issue based programmes that deal with co-dependency. It talks about "God" and a "Higher Power" because that is what the 12 Steps are based on. It takes pains to iterate that the "God" is of your understanding and just means a power greater than yourself and if you choose to make that a coffee table, a plant, or anything else it is up to you. It is about empowering your own life and looking after yourself to the best of your abilities and it is a helpful and practical guide that allows you to be gentle and loving to yourself. I recommend it without reservation for anyone suffering from any kind of codependency problems.

I can honestly say that this is a very honest and well thought out method for quitting and am very happy I read it, because, ever since finishing it, whilst I haven't managed to break the habit... I have hated every cigarette since!!!
Well Done!! If your a smoker... Please try this!!!
Unbelievable!, 02 Nov 2008
I have already recommended this to several friends, I just can't believe I've actually managed to stop smoking (since January 2008 - it's now November 2008) after at least a dozen failed attempts in the past using everything from hypnotism to group therapy, patches, sprays, sheer will power, even pregnancy and my kids begging me to stop couldn't prevent me from falling back into it after three months at best. This time, I couldn't believe how easy it all was! I read the book straight through without doing any of the exercises first, then started reading it again but this time doing the exercises. At the same time, I started listening to the cd and did this religiously every day for two weeks. After the third day I no longer had any desire to smoke - this had been planned as my quit day anyway - and in spite of parties, alcohol, friends tempting me to smoke, I haven't had one and haven't really wanted to. I have put on a few pounds but that's due to me being a greedy piggy! Needless to say I have recently bought Mr McKenna's book on how to lose weight...
Quit Smoking Today Without Gaining Weight, 14 Oct 2008
This is a great book. Only read the first 3 chapters and listened to the cd a few times before I quit. I'd pop the headphone on and fall asleep each night. I didn't even realise I'd stopped until somebody asked why I wasn't smoking.
I fully recommend this to everybody. Simply excellent!
Didn't Do Me Any Favours, 31 May 2008
I had high hopes for this book, The book itself isn't that long, a couple or 3 hours will finish it, Its full of visualisation exercises and a bit of psychology. The CD is about 30 mins long, I listened to it for 2 weeks and it was painful. I found myself getting bored each time about 10 mins in. He tells you to count down from 300, but when you reach 0 thats is, now what do I do??
Didn't work for me at all but may work for you
works for me too, 18 May 2008
it's funny how similar we all are. Like most of the previous reviewers I just gave the book a fast look and went straight to the cd. It's been a godsend, i have still gained weight, but who cares, have not had a smoke since I started listening to Paul.. about 6 weeks. Must admit I HAVE wanted to smoke, usually because I've forgotten to listen that day...At such times I force myself to stop gnashing and listen again to the CD to get my head straight. It provides complete relief, and a real sense that I can indeed accomplish this. Spend the money and take the time to listen at least once a day. You'll be glad you did. L>
I've done it, 10 May 2008
I was sceptical when I bought this book and was only half-hearted in my desire to give up. I listened to the CD for three days in a row before I finally quit. I had been smoking for over 35 years and have not had a cigarette for almost ten weeks. It wasn't a miracle cure but listening to the CD gave the the motivation to want to give up. You have to quit smoking for yourself, by yourself but this certainly helped me.

This book is amazing, heart wrenching and brutal. I could not put it down. It seems so honest and gives a real insight into what people go t hrough with alcohol and drug issues. It also shows how love can touch us and what a determined human being can achieve...

This book changed my life, 24 Nov 2008
I want to start by saying to the people who are looking for this book to magically solve their drinking problems....it won't. You have to do the work! If you read the book and don't follow the instructions, and end the book hoping it will cure you..... it won't. Alan VERY CLEARLY gives instructions and VERY CLEARLY tells you that you MUST follow them. If you don't agree with what he says, this book is simply not for you.
My story.....I am a 38 year old female who has been drinking heavily for 15 years. As my drinking got worse I was drinking a bottle of red wine or more every night. At the weekends 2 a night, sometimes 3. My life was just devastated. I was an emotional wreck. Totally crippled with guilt about my drinking, I felt disgusting. My confidence was shattered. I didn't visit people because it meant I couldn't drink so I became isolated from friends and family. I used to wake every morning feeling so very bad. My eyes red and sore. My head foggy and my concentration gone. My stomach sick and my energy gone. My balance was going and I often stumbled and bumped into things. I often had a drink to try and make me feel better. It was a vicious circle I could not see a way out of. I knew I had to stop, for my children and for me. I couldn't tell anyone how bad it was because they would try to make me stop and the thought of life without drink terrified me. How empty it would be. What would be the point. I would hate life. Wouldn't be able to enjoy it without a drink. Looking back I think 'What the hell is that all about?' I started off around 3 months before I bought the book saying the affirmation ' I am alcohol free' Over and over, day and night, even when I was gulping down the poison. I bought the book. I read it, following the instructions, feeling so nervous and so frightened of what was to come. I got to the important part and thought 'no, I don't feel that I fully understand'. I went back, as instructed and read again until I did and then I took my final drink, still a little unsure but I was going to just do it. I was terrified I would fail. This was my last chance. I stopped. I still didn't tell ANYONE in case I started drinking again. Week after week the fear gripped me. I had nightmares for about 3 months where I had an empty glass in my hand and I had finished a glass of wine. How could I go back now, I had failed. Then waking up and thinking. Wow, that's not going to happen. I will never drink again. I worried that if I was offered a drink I would forget that I had stopped and screw it all up. It didn't happen. Every time the thought of a drink came into my head I acknowledged it, I didn't run from it, I thought to myself 'is that what I want to go back to?' NO WAY! I said with a big smile on my face and such a fantastic feeling inside. I'M FREE. I'M FREE. MY LIFE STARTS HERE. I haven't had a drink in over a year and I am so grateful for this book. I will never look back. I WILL NEVER DRINK AGAIN! Isn't that so good? The fear will be there.....it will be overwhelming.....just go with it.......you will soon see that the fear is nothing....you are so much more than that stupid little monster. You will see that the fear comes to NOTHING. And life......life still has it's ups and downs but your confidence and pride and sense of achievement will do more for you than any glass of poison ever could. I really hope this helps someone else.
It worked for me., 23 Nov 2008
There are quite a few reviews here that express dissapointment when they discover this book is not really about cutting down it is about quitting. However if you read the book carefully you will soon realise there is no other option. If you are considering buying this book then you are probably concerned about your drinking. All I can say is it worked for me. I was a heavy (and getting heavier) drinker for 20 years. I was unhappy with the situation. This book gave me the tools and confidence to knock it on the head. Every night I go to bed thrilled that I won't wake up with a hangover and regret the night before. My husband still drinks. To be honest I just look at what it does to him and think god - why did I ever do that to myself. I go to parties where everyone is drinking and I have a great time. I really don't sit there envying the drinkers. Oh, and I have saved plenty of money to spend on other things - like DVDs that I can stay awake all the way through cos I'm not watching them in a semi-stupor etc etc. I can clearly remember sitting here reading the reviews of this book myself wondering if reading one book could make a difference. Yes it can. But it is about stopping not cutting down. And what is so wrong with that? You get your life back.
It works., 21 Sep 2008
I bought the book after too many times waking up thinking "I must cut down" with vague memories of the night before which often included passing out on the sofa. I bought the book on amazon after reading reviews. I read it all and followed the instructions and it works. I am a non-drinker with no desire to drink at all. I am happier and more energetic and I get on with things without the thought of when my first drink will be at the back of my mind. Its a strange feeling at the moment, I stay up a lot later and have more interest and enthusiasm but don't seem to know where to direct it. I couldn' drink alcohol now even if I wanted to so only read this book if you are prepared to accept the life changing consequences. It does work!
it works, 31 Aug 2008
after drinking for 35 years (AGE 16 TO AGE 51) I did not consider myself an alcoholic. hangovers, arguments, violence , crazy decisions were never enough to make me quit. one sunday morning i woke up to find i had done something mad. i knew something had to change. i started to read this book as a reluctant sceptic. i finished it with a sense of joy and purpose. this book does not lecture , judge or send you on a guilt trip.it opens your eyes. my only regret is that i did not read it when i was about 20. alan carr probably saved my life. i salute him
It Somewhat Works, 10 Aug 2008
I have read this book and managed to stop for four months, which was great. The things you run away from don't stop once you stop drinking. Thats the reality of life I guess. I started drinking again more than before after it wore off. Am re-reading the book again in the hope that it will work. Did the clinic in London too and stopped for one week. Actually, feel like need to do this regularly and you do need to say that you will NOT drink again and never doubt that decision. Alcohol is such a wicked thing and so hard to escape from once you are deep in the trap.
