Interesting book but not the simpliest, 10 Aug 2008
Having just renewed my interest in slow cookers I bought this book based on amazon reviews. Some of the receipes are interesting but you will spend time having to research what some of the ingredients are. This is fine but I thought the whole point of owning a slow cooker was to save time! This book was written for the amercian market and probably makes a lot more sense there.
Eye opening, 27 May 2008
I bought the slow cooker for lamb and beef principally but this book totally opened my eyes to other options - chicken, vegetables, and even various puddings and deserts.
And all I have tried so far absolutely delicious.
Plus with some helpful tips in terms of what can be done the night before and what has to be done on the day.
A great book for anyone wnating to use a slow cooker, 16 Mar 2008
I've used this book for two years and every recipe has come out very well. I've not found any problems with it being American and it's delight to come across new ideas from over the pond. All the quantities in my copy are in USA (cups/lbs/ozs/spoons) and metric (ltrs/ mltrs and grams). Not come across any ingredients I couldn't find in the shops so far. You can make complete meals with this book - appitisers, starters, main courses, side dishes of vegetables, and deserts. (You could become slow cooker obsessed and surround yourself with them, a gurgle-fest in your kitchen.) It did make me think about all sorts of dishes I could prepare beforehand and slow cook them without that last moment panic. I'm going to get another slow cooker and make it a bigger one this time (3+ ltr) so I can cook, eat 1/2 and freeze 1/2, in one process. I can then use my current small slow cooker for deserts or side dishes. (Well I said you could get obsessed!)
If you like the idea of slow cooking - get this book - every meal's a winner.
Excellent results, 13 Nov 2007
I recently purchased Judith's book and a slow cooker (I must admit, being from Holland, I had not been aware of slow cookers...)and the few recipes which I already prepared, have been delicious and highly appreciated by the members of my household. The Mexican enchilladas have become one of our favourites. I can strongly recommend her book as her recipes are easy to follow. I prepare my dinners in the morning before going to work and when I get home, I don't need to worry anymore of preparing a nice meal.
Fantastic cook book - every recipe has been delicious, 14 Apr 2007
I recently bought this book when I rediscovered my slow cooker in a box in the loft. We have tried over a dozen of the recipes so far and they have all been absolutely delicious. Each recipe is packed full of scrummie flavours. The recipes require a certain amount of preparation before you can put them in the slow cooker - so you either need to plan some extra time in the morning or each recipe tells you how to prepare the dish the previous evening - then you just chill it overnight and switch it on in the morning. The house smells delicious when you get home! I would thoroughly recommend this book.

I wish I'd bought this book first because it's exactly what I was looking for. There are some "normal" recipes in there that you are likely to actually eat and not have to spend 5 hours first preparing everything which kinda defeats the whole point of having a slow cooker!
Obviously there is some preparation involved (which you have to do with the meat first anyway!) and some more pics would have been nice but I find sometimes no pics are better so I'm not comparing the mess I've just made to the pristine example in the book... OK - but some repetition, 14 Nov 2007
some nice recipes in this book but be warned some of them have been recycled from author's previous book entitled "Real Food from your Slo-Cooker" A whole new world!, 10 Nov 2005
After much badgering by my friend, I recently gave in and purchased my first slow cooker. I started using it for the usual beef stew, chicken casserole etc but wanted more variety. I trawled bookshops for a recipe book and stumbled on this one. Being a novice, the first section ‘General Hints & Tips’ was very useful. What further convinced me to buy it was that most of the ingredients are either what you would already have in the cupboard or are readily available in the supermarket. Also, the measurements are given in metric, imperial as well as American (cups etc) so no need to convert. The instructions are clear and simple – very easy to follow. There are some great traditional recipes such as French Onion Soup, Somerset Bacon Hotpot, Beef in Brown Ale, Cock au Vin etc, and some really tasty new ideas (for me anyway) - Chicken & Tarragon (delicious), Mexican Chicken, Malay Spiced Pork…. Also, it has been a real eye opener as to what you can use your slow cooker for – it would never have occurred to me to use it for: whole joints, fish, paella, curry, pate, crème caramel, sponges (can’t wait to try the Rhubarb and Almond Sponge and the Pineapple Upside-down Sponge). My friend (the slow cooker expert) has also fallen in love with this book, so it’s not just for us beginners. I have many cook books which I only use for two or three recipes but I this one has so many that I want to try, it’s not going to sit on the shelf and gather dust.
If you want to try/like using a slow cooker - buy this!, 13 Oct 2005
First let me say that I have lots of cookbooks and this is the only review I have been tempted to write. After owning a small slow cooker when I was single I recently decided to use one again and buy a larger one to use for me and hubby! This book has rekindled my love of them. It provides lots of inspiration. It has sections on Soups eg Butter Bean and Tomato, Starters eg Farmhouse Pate, Sauces eg Sweet and Sour, Vegetables eg Cheese Stuffed Onions and Pulses eg Persian Rice or Spiced Vegetables and Barley, Fish, Meat, Puddings and Desserts eg Gingerbread, Chocolate Sponge and last but not least Rice Pudding (delicious). It also has a few misc such as recipes for stock, chutney, jam, lemon curd and mulled wine. I have made countless things from this book and have found the recipes to be spot on and easy to increase/decrease. I could go on and on. But suffice to say for £7 its definately worth the money.
The English Crockpot - great book!, 10 Feb 2003
This book is for anyone who's fed up with only cooking stews in their slo-cookers, or has trolled the net looking for crockpot recipes with English ingredients they can understand and find. It covers a whole variety of different recipes, from roasting legs of lamb, steaming puddings and cooking whole chickens, to making lemon curd, soups, curry, half a dozen different chicken casseroles and a batch of different sauces. There's even instructions on how to use your slo-cooker/crockpot to make mulled wine. :) Annette Yates also gives serving suggestions for things that go well with her dishes. Easy-to-follow recipes, with some lovely colour photographs (but not too many - she doesn't try to fill empty space with pictures which is a novelty!) make this an excellent cookbook, one that will actually be used, instead of just read and left on the shelf like so many others.

excellent recipes, 30 Jul 2008
Have this book for 6 months and have tried many recipes from within very successfully - one of the best cook books I have bought.
A Really Impressive Slo Cooker Book, 29 Mar 2008
This brilliant recipe book is unique in that it actually delivers the goods. I've ploughed through quite a few recipes and can honestly say that all have been a great success.
Written with a knowledge of, and passion for the featured dishes , it produces superb results which are truly of restauraunt quality and above. The instructions are simple and easy to follow, the main time is taken blending the ingredients.
I would recommend a trip to any main Tesco's store beforehand, as they have a great speciality section which stocks all the various ingredients you will need to produce these fantastic dishes.
I've already ordered the mediterranean and the seasonal edition and can't wait to get cracking on some of the recipes they contain.
In short, this book is Ronseal........ Does exactly what it says on the tin ! !

Living in the 70s, 20 Apr 2008
I purchased a dual rice cooker/slow cooker, mainly for the rice bit, but on looking for recipes suitable for a slow cooker I plumped for this book for starters. Unfortunately this book is just an updated version of an old book first published around 30 years ago, so the recipes are a bit "living in the 70s" (beef bourguignon anyone?). Slow cooking seems to be undergoing a bit of a revival, but we really need some new recipe books with more sophisticated recipes and flavours for more modern tastes.
Slow cooking properly explained, 12 Mar 2007
I liked this book. It is defiantely for the slow cooker novice. The only thing i didnt like, is that it didnt have any pictures. This book explained everything in precise detail, and even gave suggestions on, for example, what kind of rice to use - not what brand, but the actual kind, rather than just saying "Rice". The recipes range from meats, to pates, and desserts. I would recommend this book for anyone who is just starting out with their first slow cooker, and needs ideas to keep them from cooking just the recipes that come with the cooker.
It does exactly what it says on the tin!!, 29 Dec 2005
I was given a slow cooker as a Christmas present this year. I got this book to give me a few ideas. It is well laid out with over a hundred easy recipes. There are plenty of helpful hints and tips to help you get started. Well worth the money.
Very Helpful, 11 Feb 2004
This book does exactly what it says on the front! Properly explains slow cooking, I was not apprehensive about using my new slow cooker after reading this little book. Perfect to get you started! Happy Cooking!
A great way to cook., 14 May 2003
An excellent introduction to slow cooking but just a trite outdated in view of recent research findings on high temperature cooking. A great way and healthier way of cooking.

At last! Interesting, delicious, easy slow cooker recipes for vegetarians, 01 Mar 2008
Almost every slow cooker recipe I've ever made has been tomato-based. Recipe books are full of slow-cook meat recipes and stews, but I was bored already, after just a few months of owning my slow cooker.
So I had high hopes for this recipe book and I have to say it has exceeded my expectations.
Firstly, the recipes actually are vegetarian (many of them are vegan). I say this because other slow cooker recipe books have "vegetarian" sections which are packed with meat stock, chicken soup, fish sauce and bacon in the ingredients!
Secondly, the recipes are easy and they work. Again, despite being pretty experienced in the kitchen, I've had the experience of embarrassing failures with other slow cooker recipe books.
Thirdly, just reading the recipes made me want to get cooking! They are inspiring, delicious and simple to follow. There are hints for how to prepare the night before, to save time, and also variations on the recipes, to keep them interesting.
I highly recommend this book for vegetarian slow cooker users and also non-veggies who are bored of meat casseroles and fancy a change.
So far my favourite recipes from this book are:
Peanut & Potato Loaf
Raspberry Custard Cake
Lentil Shepherd's Pie
Wild Rice With Mushrooms & Apricots
French Onion Soup
Caramelised Onions
Hot Roasted Nuts
I hope you enjoy this recipe book!
A great book for beginners with a slow cooker, 21 Jan 2008
This book is great it has a helpful guide at the start on how to use your cooker including some tips. Which are really needed as my cooker didn't come with very good instructions and tips.
The recipes are clear and have tips down the side which I have found very useful. I really like the make ahead tips as you can flick through and find recipes which you can prepare the night before, leave in the fridge and then put in the cooker the next morning.
Yes the book does not contain many pictures, but the descriptions/tips are so good you know what you are doing by following the instructions.
What an amazing cookbook!, 08 Nov 2007
I love this cookbook, it is fantastic. I've made loads of recipies from it which were all easy to follow and yummy. I use this cook book almost every day now. I have alot of other cook books and usually try two or three of the recipes but this one I've made about 12 things from and I'm still working my way through it. The ingredients are all easy to find and it is a great book if you are trying to eat seasonally. I make my family's dinner in the morning but I don't need to wait around for it to cook, I just switch the slow cooker on and then go about my day. Fantastic book!

Great first book, 15 Jan 2008
This was the first book I bought after purchasing my slow cooker. It has been a great help because it not only has a some wonderful recipes but has specific information about how a slow cooker works which has enabled me to translate some old favourites. Favourite recipes have been produced week after week, and everybody from the 14 year old to the 4 year old has enjoyed them. Good range of recipes, all the ones we have tried have been delicious. Highly recommended.

Great start, 09 Mar 2008
This was the first book I bought after purchasing my slow cooker. It has been a great help because it not only has a some wonderful recipes but has specific information about how a slow cooker works which has enabled me to translate some old favourites. Favourite recipes have been produced week after week, and everybody from the 14 year old to the 4 year old has enjoyed them. Good range of recipes, all the ones we have tried have been delicious. Highly recommended.

Great Cookbook, 25 Sep 2007
I'd like to completely agree with the comments below in saying this is a great cookery book. I've had my slow cooker a year now, and it took me 6 months to even get around to using it. I was mainly worried about leaving an electric cooker on while I went to work (I imagined I'd come home to a burnt out kitchen!). But it's really easy, just chuck in veg and some stock, maybe some pulses, stick it on the low setting and it's ready when you get home. There's no need to fry the veg first, and if have to work late, nothing drastic will happen. Tea takes about 5 mins to prepare in the morning and costs almost nothing. Slow cookers use about as much energy as a light bulb so they're extremely energy efficient, and it means you can use the cheapest meat and veg as you will get the fullest flavour from the slow cooking. One tip - you don't need as much liquid as you think
Right, that's my rave about the actual appliance over - now on to the book! Although the paragraph might seem irrelevant, what I mean is I find the slow cooker is so easy to use, I didn't really need a recipe book for stews. Literally just cover the veg with stock and leave it on 'low' for the day. It's very easy to experiment and end up with a tasty meal - it's just a case of choosing the veg.
This book shows how versatile the slow cooker can be. What I love about this book is the fact that it shows you what else you can do with the cooker. I'd never thought of lowering in a loaf tin and pouring water around it (like a bain-marie I guess) for pates, or doing steam puddings in there. It can also be used for chutneys and sauces which is handy.
There's a great introduction with a double page spread on each major food type poultry, meat, pulses etc saying the best ways to cook them. It also says to use the recipes as a guide, rather than a rulebook. Where one recipe says 4 hours on high, you could substitute that for 8 hours on low. Obviously some recipes need more careful consideration such as poultry to make sure it's cooked properly, but the book explains everything very clearly. The amounts are shown in imperial, metric and American, and fat and carbohydrate etc percentages are shown at the end of each dish. There are lovely bright photographs too. In fact, I would be really pleased to receive this as a present - it would make a great gift if someone you know has recently bought a slow cooker.
How to get the most out of your slow cooker, 03 Mar 2006
If you are pushed for time, and all you want is to be able to chop a few ingredients and toss them in the slow cooker then this is not the book for you. Admittedly the slow cooker is marketed as a time saving device, however the object of cooking (for me personally)is to actually enjoy the final product, and this book enables you to do just that; get the maximum use and enjoyment out of an appliance that is capable of so much more. The book itself is superbly laid out, with an introduction to slow cooker history, followed by informative sections on useful equipment, and cuts of meat/vegetables and how to prepare them - essential if you are a novice. There is a wide range of recipes here, with varying degree of difficulty and preparation time, all accompanied by photographs of the finished product. Another plus point is the inclusion of the fat/calorific content etc. of each dish, great for dieters and the more health conscious. Considering the content, this book is excellent value for money. All the recipes I have tried are clearly explained, and have been so far a complete success. The slow cooker cookbook contains some delicious meat/soup dishes, all of which require easily obtainable ingredients. But the real delight for me was the revelation that it also makes divine pâtés, desserts (steamed puddings to die for) and layered terrines which are simple to make, yet look extremely impressive. Overall I found this book a godsend, and I'm sure you will too if you are prepared to spend a little extra time - and I mean that literally, the recipes are still in the "no fuss" category. It is informative, the results are fantastic, and consequently my slow cooker is no longer gathering dust, as it inevitably would be if I were still tossing in the same old ingredients! If you want to get maximum use out of your appliance, experiment with a new range of mouth watering dishes, then look no further!
Defeats the object!, 14 Feb 2006
This is a beautifully presented book with some excellent recipes BUT most of them involve quite a bit of initial preparation and then need ingredients added an hour or so before the end of the cooking time. For me this defeats the purpose of a slow cooker. If you want to pop some basic ingredients in the slow cooker before you go to work, returning to a hot ready-to-eat meal, this book is not for you!

Customer Reviews
Great first book, 15 Jan 2008
