It's all in the prep!, 18 Feb 2008
This book changed my life!! OK, slight exaggeration but it did wonders for my cooking confidence, which means i cook a lot more now, and that can't be a bad thing. First of all the recipes are very varied & delicious. Also importantly (for me at least..!), all the 'work' is in the prep, which of course you can take all the time you like over (though it needn't take long). The actual cooking tends to be pretty quick and easy stir frying, so no panicking during cooking. The ingredients needed are pretty easy to come by (fresh vegetables; chillies, lemongrass; soy & fish sauce; soba noodles; dashi etc.). The final reason i love these recipes is that you feel really good for having had such a healthy meal, without it tasting 'too healthy'..!
Good, but a couple of printing errors...., 16 Jan 2008
I love Wagamamas food so I bought this to try my hand at cooking it.....
At my first attempt I discovered that there is no explanation of what Mikku powder is. Nor was it mentioned in the ingredients in my dish. So when I was asked to add Mikku powder I was a little cheesed off that I didn't have any. My work collegue also got this book and has just mentioned a similar problem with one of the chilli sauce recipes....Hmmmmm
Be warned, you need Mikku powder!!

When i lived in Johannesburg, Wagamama was one of my favorite restaurants for delisious and not expensive meal. Having the fondest memories of the place, purchased this book in London a couple of month ago. Wasn't disappointed at all, despite that some of recipes do not work exactly the way you want them too.
First few pages of the book devoted to souses, including a famous Wagamama one. It's gorgeous, tastes like haven and easy to make. Other souses as good.
The rest of the book holds a great deal of good recipes, worth trying.
Definite buy.
Better than the real thing., 06 Feb 2007
I used this book before going to Wagamama: my food tasted great, whereas I was disappointed with Wagamama. I followed the recipes and found that they didn't need altering at all, which is great for those who want to cook something new for friends without doing a trial run.
If only I had enough time, I'd use it every day. Now I'm feeling hungry!
Good But Not Simple, 20 Dec 2006
If you like Wagamama's and like cooking then you'll like this.
It is difficult though to find recipes with only a few ingredients. If you want simple cooking then this isn't it.
I like my oriental food and cook now and again, and there's a few recipes here that I try. The recipes seem to be relatively authentic (I do have some experience) but seem over complicated at times. If you do follow the recipe though, then it does seem to turn out something like what you get in the restaurant...
You might not find all your favourites here as I think their menu varies from city to city. I would though be willing to get another of their cookbooks to find my favourites based on my experiences of this version.

Product Description
It's surprising to realise just how thoroughly sushi -- the Japanese art of fish-based cuisine -- has colonised the more sophisticated areas of Great Britain (and some not so sophisticated). What was once considered exotic fare is now something that many of us are addicted to. And the reasons aren't difficult to understand -- apart from the absolutely delicious nature of the food itself, it's the undisputed healthy aspects of sushi that allows us to enjoy the food without feeling in the slightest guilty. A great part of the revolution in food bought about by sushi in this country is undoubtedly due to the remarkable success of the YO! Sushi chain of restaurants, and YO! Sushi: The Japanese Cookbook by Kimiko Barber is both the bible of this new/old cuisine, as well as an inspirational primer for those wishing to try their hand at preparing sushi themselves. Sushi is, of course, not the most straightforward of food to prepare at home (in contrast to the speedy nature with which we are served it in YO! Sushi restaurants), but Barber, in straightforward, well-illustrated instructions gives us the most comprehensible of directions. From slicing fish for sashimi and sushi to making hand rolls (the latter, of course, being one of the key ingredients in sushi cuisine), up to preparing such exotic dishes as Okononiyaki (a savoury Japanese pancake) and the delicious fried dumplings filled with minced vegetables called Gyoza: it's all here, laid out in the most straightforward fashion. There are, of course, those tempting deserts which slide by us on the conveyor belts that are so intrinsic a part of the YO! Sushi restaurants, and there will be quite a few people -- inspired by visits to the restaurants -- who will be checking to see if this still exotic cuisine is within their own culinary range. --Barry Forshaw

Yo! Sushi rocks, 22 Jul 2008
I love going to Yo! Sushi when on site with work, trouble is at home the nearest restaurant is over an hour away. This book allows me to recreate the delicious food. It has to be said my efforts are not up to the standard of the chef's but if you get fresh ingredients they taste, if not look, great.
As for the book - not only is it informative and easy to read, it is also a work of art in itself, the photography and general layout and appearance make it an ideal coffee table book for the occasional read. Trouble is every time I do that I end up hungry!
Great book, great food, now where is my rice cooker I'm hungry
YAY, 27 Feb 2008
Fantastic and clear recipes with mostly easy to find ingredients! I am from San Francisco where ingredients like dark miso paste and tofu varieties are readily available, but it will take some digging in the UK. The recipes are very clear and absolutely delicious. Many of the recipes are based off of similar ingredients so you won't have to buy too much unusual stuff. I have made Japanese before, but the instructions in this book make things so much easier to follow.
More than just sushi!, 20 Sep 2007
What a great book! I've been looking for a basic Japanese cookbook and this really delivers. It teaches not only the fundamentals of sushi making (and no, it's not all raw fish), but also gives great recipes for cooked dishes, rice and noodle dishes. It really is food you could serve to anyone. If you want to challenge yourself to proper sushi making, the step by step instructions are a godsend. The book itself is beautiful and colourful and I found it really encouraging and fun. I love the restaurants, and this book doesn't disappoint.

Best Noodle Recipe Book, 20 Nov 2008
This is by far the best noodle recipe book on the market. Bought one for myself last yet, now bought another as a gift. Nicely illustrated, gorgeous receipes, great price. I almost bought this book at full price in a leading book shop, but thought I'd check it on Amazon first, glad I did. You won't be disappointed. Would make a great gift.
Oodles of Noodles for Everyone!, 17 May 2006
Wow! What an amazing book! I had my first Wagamana experience on Saturday when I was in Birmigham as we don't have any in Cornwall. The restaurant has been on my "places I must eat in" list and after such wonderful food and service, I just had to buy the cookbook!
Well, it arrived yesterday and I made the Spicy Beef Noodles for Dinner and then made a noodle salad for my packed lunch for work! Roll on lunch time!
It is an amazing book with lots of information and pictures. The recipes are easy to follow and the food that you create is authentic! Some ingredients you do have to look for, but it is worth it! Especaially if you are a foodie and appreciate cooking!
This book would be good for newbies to noodles (like me)!
Buy it, learn to slurp and enjoy oodles of noodles!
:-)
Simple, tasty food that's easy to prepare., 14 May 2006
This book is even better than the first Wagamama book, as it provides a far greater variety of things to try.
There are plenty of exciting recipies, ranging from easy five minute fare to more elaborate meals. Even the more complicated dishes are easy make however, and the results are always tasty and nutritious.
Whether avid carnivore or veggie, adept stir-fryer or yet to be chopsticked, you will be sure to find something of interest within the pages of this book. There are flavours to suite every palette, and plenty that will take your taste buds in new directions.
Some of the dishes do require a few special ingredients; though none that can't be found with out a little effort, and such experimentation only makes for intriguing culinary adventures.
If you are in need of a solid, speedy cook book that does for both the everyday and added indulgance, look no further. This is an excellent contemporary cookbook, and a great base from which to start composing your own noodle cuisine.
Noodle fans, get this book!

A deal, deal, deal!, 30 Jun 2008
You can't beat the price for this set. Unlike the other reviewer I had no pen marks in my book, and there was no dust. Perhaps that was a one-off thing? Anyway, the set is gorgeous, the book is very informative. It would make a great gift for someone interested in sushi, or for yourself if you are learning how to make sushi for the first time, like me. I highly recommend it!
A bargain! , 17 Feb 2008
This set is a real bargain! The picture does not do it justice. The presentation box is very nice and has three pull out draws making it look much more expensive than it really is. All of the contents seem to be high quality and the recipes in the book included are easy to follow. I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he is extremely pleased with it.
not 100%, 31 Dec 2007
I had read reviews on the product prior to my purchase, all were positive, however when I recieved my product I wasnt too keen. Firstly the book isnt hardcover, and secondly someone had left a pen mark in it although I bought it brand new. The set does come in a cute little kit, however once I managed to actually open and retrieve the dishes and mat I found them to be covered in dust! it is a very basic starter kit, and I would only recommend it to novices.

Authentic and Comprehensive.... perhaps a little too much so, 12 Nov 2008
This is a beautiful and well written cookbook. it aims at being comprehensive and authentic and definitely succeeds. However, the author has the most exacting and uncompromising approach to ingredients and recipes i have ever encountered in a cookbook and this really undermines it in the long run. This book is all about producing the food that Thais eat in Thailand and as such, demands a whole bunch of really specialised ingredients. I live in Manchester and we have a bunch of Chinese/Asian supermarkets and at least 3 Thai food stores and even then I've had real trouble finding some of the things. And even if you could find everything, David tells you that you should really be making everything from scratch. From coconut cream to fermented pork this book teaches you how to make everything in Thai cookery and how the shop-bought versions really aren't quite the same. Personally, i find his level of exactitude off-putting. I want to make tasty things and be told they will be tasty, not pale imitations of what i could make if i lived in Thailand and had plenty of time and ingredients to hand. You simply cannot buy coconuts at three different stages of growth in Manchester. I also want to be told where and when i can make shortcuts, the author just tells you that you shouldn't which is unhelpful really.
The recipes are well described and, if you flick about to different sections, give loads of details about about EXACTLY how to prepare ingredients, cook things and what it is you're looking for at each stage of cooking. what i have made has been good (or great) but it's been the most laborious shopping trips ever. I had hoped that this would help me eat delicious Thai food regularly which it hasn't, it's just too daunting for that. However, it has made me confident in cooking asian food and comes out when i want to make something a bit more special when i have time and money on my hands. Buy this book if you want a (very pretty) definitive guide to authentic Thai cuisine written by a passionate author, don't buy this if you're looking for Thai food you can knock up on a regular basis or live far from specialist Thai food stores.
Excellent even for a Thai, 30 Aug 2008
I'm a Thai living the UK. Hoping to find great recipes for traditional Thai dishes out of the country, I bought this book about two years ago. I have been truly satisfied with what David Thompson provided here. Several dishes are even hard to come across in restaurants in Thailand. He seems to have studied a great deal about the Thai cuisine [although some Thai names are not well transliterated into English]. Congratulations, Mr. Thompson! For the readers, this book is a must-have if you are into cooking Thai.

Yummy, but impossible, 07 Jun 2006
I bought this book with great expectations, all set up and ready for a new and better life full of thai food. I was first overwhelmed buy the book, and it took me an entire day just to read the introductionary chapters. It's very interesting, and there is a lot of background knowledge to be got about Thailand, it's history, cooking style and so on. However the recipes are SO complicated! Not the preparations (which tend to be on the hard side to) but the ingredients. I've only actually cooked a handful of things, and only by making great compromises. It's simply impossible getting the ingredients here, in spite of the fact that I have gone to Thai stores. If you live in Thailand this book is great for cooking. In Europe (and maybe America) it borders on impossible. To give an example of this is easy. By completely randomly opening the book I find a recipe that calls for: Langsart (peeled and stoned).. two types of chillies, ground caramelised peanuts, ..coconut vinegar (p. 357). The book is visually inviting, very extensive, and very well researched. A pity it's impossible as a cookbook
Good enough to eat!, 18 Feb 2006
This has to be the most beautiful, well-researched and comprehensive book on any cuisine, bar none! And very importantly, David Thompson has included a wealth of history and background info on Thai gastronomy, culture and lifestyles, to help put everything into context. In that sense, I'm actually glad this is written by a non-Thai (although first that slightly put me off), as many things which to a Thai might have been obvious are explained by Thompson as only he can who has had to make a conscious effort to learn them from scratch.
One word of warning, though: the recipes are complex, and many of the ingredients can only be found in specialist (Thai / SE Asian) stores, and even then it's a challenge. So in a way the book is a bit frustrating - you're eager to get on and try the recipes, only to discover that you cannot find some crucial spice, herb or fermented-what-not.
Still, the sheer pleasure of just reading this...!

Worth to have ot, 25 Jun 2007

Fantastic Thai food!, 09 Feb 2007
What a great book! If you love Thai food but want dishes that are simple to prep & cook yet look/taste great then this book is for you. All recipes are very easy to follow including pictures of how your dish should look & lots of helpful hints on technique. The end results of all the dishes I have tried have been excellent & the book offers a blend of traditional favourites & some new and very interesting ideas. Money well spent!
small and practicle, 19 Oct 2008
I didn't expect the book to be so small and was first suspicious because it felt like one of those that don't really have "true" recipes. Note that some ingredients are missing their instruction in the description of the recipe, which I find annoying.
However I have made possibly 10 recipes so far and they are just perfect!
I just love this tiny little book and find the instructions simple to follow, except for the rolled omelette which I haven't managed to make properly yet.
Japanese cooking in a nutshell, 13 Jul 2008
If you only want to own one book about Japanese cooking, I strongly recommend you buy this one. It doesn't look like much, but it's extremely good value for money.
The recipes are very clear, and although it seems a very slim volume, it covers many different styles of Japanese dishes, including a variety of rice and noodle dishes, sushi and onigiri, tempura, soups, desserts and also just homestyle meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Each recipe is accompanied by clear colour photographs not only of the finished dish but also of any unusual steps in the cooking process.
The majority of the dishes can be made entirely from ingredients you can buy from the supermarket and the ones that are harder to find can be obtained from your local Oriental supermarket. The introduction features a guide to Japanese cooking ingredients you may be unfamiliar with, including photographs of all of them.
And the best reason I can give why you should buy this book is that everything I've made from it is yummy!
Now a staple on my kitchen shelf, 29 Nov 2007
This book is stuffed full of simple, authentic and delicious recipes. I love how you can make almost all the dishes with just mirin, sake and soy sauce. Almost all ingredients are easily available at your local Waitrose or Sainsbury's, or pop into an Asian/Chinese supermarket or online store. A surprisingly slim volume for 70 recipes, thanks to the simple but very clear instructions along with great photos. A refreshing change from the huge hardback tomes that one usually get from Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsay or Rick Stein. I tried a number of the recipes and the results were thoroughly delicious and fantastic for someone missing Japanese food. Happy cooking days ahead!
Authentic Japanese Cooking Made Easy, 02 Dec 2006
I recieved this book as a birthday gift, and after a few weeks tried out a couple of the recipies for the first time.
The recipies were easy to follow, with pictures of some of the steps AND pictures of the finished dish for every dish (a major bonus). Almost all of the ingredients are easy to find in western supermarkets, and the ones which aren't can be found readily in your nearest asian supermarket or online.
The taste of the food from this book is very good quality; I've found out how to make one of my favourite dishes from a local japanese restaurant using this book (and it tasted exactly the same).
The only drawback is that it only has 70 recipies, and that isn't even really a drawback!

Worth to have ot, 25 Jun 2007
Thompson! For the readers, this book is a must-have if you are into cooking Thai.

i was recommended this book by a chef who specialises in thia cookery. it is a fabulous book and very well written.
the only problem is localing the ingredients in the south west

About 3 years ago I bought "Sushi for Dummies" and used it as a guide to many successful sushi dinners. It is a great book and goes into much detail.
Recently I wanted to start making sushi again and have bought a few more books. I bought the Sushi Cookbook and upon reading it, I see how much detail it leaves out. The book has lots of nice photos, but glosses o | | |
