Real old school cooking, 27 Oct 2008
What a brilliant and talented man. His dishes are easy to make and the good thing about all of the dishes in the book is that you can get the ingredients even in your local supermarket, if you have no good markets near you. The recipies when cooked taste like your mum's, grandmother's and if you lucky to have tasted ypur great granny's cooking then its like a blast from the past on your taste buds.
For All those young and old fellow british caribbeans that have lost the way and art of cooking due to whatever reasons, will find their way inside levi Roots Reggae Reggae Cookbook.
This is probably one of the best caribbean cook books out, and is far from intimidating as many other books can be.
It's absolutely a great book; A must buy.

I love reggae reggae food!, 22 Aug 2008
My friend bought me this book because she knew I was a great fan of Dragons Den and she had seen me consume a fair few bottles of Reggae Reggae Sauce since it hit the shelves.
Firstly I took a flick through the book and read Levi's amazing life story which really helps to give you an idea of the Jamaican culture behind the food. And then I threw myself right in because I was inspired by the food on offer. I prepared a meal for my housemates which they loved. The next day I baked a Jamaican Ginger Cake because I really like the cake you can buy - Levi's recipe is a lot better!
Do yourself a favour and put some music in your food! I hope I can gather some friends together and prepare some Jamaican dishes and drinks for them all to enjoy. Even better, everyone help out in the cooking, put some music on, and enjoy the energy of the food.
If Reggae Reggae Sauce and this book are anything to go by, then I really hope that Levi Root's restaurants take off because there is certainly space for Jamaican food in this country. Please do another book with more recipe's!
My favourite cookery book EVER!, 08 Aug 2008
I bought this book as my late grandad was Jamaican-but I never asked him how to teach me to cook authentic jamaican food
:-( so thought I'd give this a try!
This book hasn't disappointed so far, the rice and peas were absolutely delicious-they took a fair amount of time to prepare first time round (but then again I'm not a great cook!) but it was well worth it-I was eating them for DAYS afterwards as i couldn't bear to throw away such delicious leftovers!
I made the rum punch and the coleslaw for my birthday and it went down very well! Everyone was asking where I got the receipes from. I'm also really looking forward to making the patties!
I have had to get my family to send some of the ingredients up from London though as many aren't available up north! (i.e salt fish!)The websites in the appendix were a useful touch but the ingredients are expensive on it...
It was also interesting to read about Levi's life througout the book-if buy one cookery book this year make it this one!
Irie!, 07 Aug 2008
We've been following Levi's progress since seeing him impress the dragons on Dragon's Den & we're SO pleased to see him come so far in such a short period of time. If ever there was a person who was deserving a 'leg up' in the business world, it's Levi! We've bought the sauces so we just HAD to buy the book!
Coming from a caribbean background myself, I was so pleased to see these traditional recipes that are usualy passed down from generation to generation, published for all to enjoy. I also love the personal touch of Levi adding a little bit about himself, his upbringing in Jamaica & his life here-a really nice touch & a superbly refreshing change from the usual mundane cookbook genre. We can't wait to get cooking & put some of our own music in our food!
Congratulations on your success, Levi! May you go from strength to strength!
Just to add, ordered on 2nd, received today(7th)-well within estimated delivery, excellent service!
A breath of fresh Caribbean air ..., 31 Jul 2008
If you're fed up with cook books stuffed with airy fairy recipes that you'll never use, then I think you'll love this one. Clear, simple, entertaining, and a right good read, I think it's one of the best cook books I've read in a long while.
I had no idea who Levi Roots was until I picked this up in the book shop the other day (I don't watch TV and was never into reggae) but if he's half as warm in person as he comes over in his book, then he must be a really nice guy!
Buy it - I think you'll like it.

What a wonderful book!!!!, 12 Aug 2008
Firstly, I would just like to say, what a wonderful service Amazon provides as I got the book the next day. When opened, it had me reminicsing to when I was in Trinidad and my saliva was overflowing in my mouth. All the food you could think of that Trinidad has to offer is there and a little bit of history thrown in. Hopefully my father will appreciate this (I am sure he will) and even cooking a few receipes, as it is a wonderful present to give anyone who loves the Island.
Sweet Hands, 07 Oct 2007
Sweet Hands: Island Cooking from Trinidad and Tobago includes a variety of traditional island dishes including both sweet and hot main meal meals using beef, chicken, pork, goat, and lots of fish. There are also a lot of spicy vegetable main meals and side dishes and some really nice desserts, many making use of the sweet taste of coconut.
The recipes in this book are simply delicious, extremely filling, and will be enjoyed by even the most finicky audience. The food is often quite colourful and beautiful looking, even when I cooked it, which strangely seems to add more enjoyment and taste to the meal. One should note, however, that many of the recipes in this book are so tasty because it takes a good deal of time to prepare these dishes. Some of the meat marinades need to be prepared two days in advance and many of the dishes include dry chickpeas and split peas that have to be soaked overnight and then cooked before the recipe can be prepared.

I love this book!, 04 Apr 2008
This is the first Carribean cookbook I have purchased and I have to say that it comes highly recommended! I was brought up with Carribean food and have a mother who is very critical when it comes to good Carribean food. I made the coconut sweet bread and I have to say, my mum loved it!! It tasted very authentic. The reciepe's are simple and the book is full of colour and pictures. Excellant cook book, 01 Dec 2007
This was one of the first caribbean cook books I purchased and I was amazed at how easy the recipes were to follow. I have made lots of meals for friends and family following the recipes and they love it!! The colourful pictures also makes this book at lot more interesting. Caribbean cuisine at it's finest, 04 Mar 2003
It has been great trying out these very very easy-to-follow recipes.I have enjoyed having the time to explore these recipes, which have remindered me of my childhood days and how great caribbean cooking is. Love it, 30 Nov 2006
After my disastrous attempt with Paul Prudhomme's book, this book was a breath of fresh air. Tasty, simple recipes which remind me of the Carribean. Not all are perfect, but a very good success rate with me, particularly with fish & prawn recipes. Easy-to-follow ideas that taste delicious., 12 Feb 2001
This book is for anyone who wants to excel as a cook without having to spend hours in the kitchen. The ingredients are not too difficult to find. The recipes are quick to make and easy to follow. Best of all, every recipe I've tried tastes delicious. The best recipe book I've found by a long way. Highly recommended. Real Jamaican Recipes, 03 Jun 2007
Authentic Recipes from Jamaica is a colourful eyecatching book with fabulous illustrations of what your food shoould look like when cooked.
I first stumbled on it by accident.
Now I have no regrets.
Very very disappointing, 21 Nov 2005
I was impressed with the index of this book - the recipes were varied with favourits such as curry goat, bakes and escovitch fish, but also some new things that I was very keen to try out. Upon reciept however, I was compelled to return the book to Amazon, because although the recipes seem reasonably authentic enough, there were no pictures or photographs - NOT A SINGLE ONE (excluding the picture on the front cover). I'm not sure how the author expects readers to re-create the dishes without knowing how they should at least look. I didn't expect every dish to be illustrated, but I did expect some of them to be, especially the popular ones. For this reason, and this reason alone, I give this book a poor rating, and do not recommend that anyone should buy it. My quest for another carribean cookbook therefore continues .....

There's sisterly love, and then there's a vegan taste of the carribean love! All the recipes I've tried so far have been very clear and uncomplicated but taste like you've had a professional chef over for dinner. I've just lost a load of weight, but won't mind getting fat using this book. Buy it and change your kitchen!!
Excellent!!!, 05 Aug 2002
I have been using this recipe book for the last three months and it is excellent. Linda gives lots of information on the history of this cuisine and how it is traditionally served. All the recipes are clearly laid out and very uncomplicated. All the dishes I have prepared have worked every time. Everyone I have prepared this food for, all of them meat eaters I must add, has thoroughly enjoyed it especially the corn cakes of which a mexican version appears in the Vegan Taste of Mexico (yet another excellent recipe book by Linda). I have tried many vegan cookbooks over the last two and a half years and I must say Linda's regional cook books have proved to be the best. Hopefully Linda will cover other regions soon such as, Japan, China, Thailand and Greece maybe?...

Try the lentil and sweet potato soup and change your life!, 17 Nov 2002
I recently bought this book for my sister and decided to taste test one of the recipes before I handed it on- sorry sis, you'll have to buy your own copy now.
EXCELLENT BOOK!!! ONE OF A KIND!, 15 Nov 2008
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in cooking. The recipes, photography and stories in this book are unbelievable!
It is a must have in any household!
This is the One You've Been Waiting for!, 22 Sep 2004
This cookbook perfectly captures the essence and spirit of Cuban cuisine and is, by far, the best I've found. It is truly a feast for those who are as passionate about food as those Three Guys from Miami are! I was delighted to see recipes for dishes that I grew up with, but never learned how to make. If you love Cuban food, this is the book to get!
Cuban Cuisine Miami Style, 17 Sep 2004
Finally, three fellows from Miami have captured the essence of Cuban food as cooked in Miami! The Three Guys from Miami have perfectly captured the flavours I have enjoyed over many trips to Miami. Moreover they have crafted a highly readable and clever book with easy-to-follow directions. They prove that you DO NOT need to be a professional chef to cook great Cuban grub. 100 great recipes, everything from jacket potatoes on the grill to delightful maize tamales and elaborate sweets. With beautiful photographs and a a smart design, this book is a good value.

[ASIN:000727596X Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae Cookbook]].
