Not suitable for UK residents, 17 Mar 2006
Whilst this book is full of handy advice, I do not recommend it for UK residents as the recipes contain products only available in the USA.

Really great book if you are diabetic or not., 06 Jan 2007
I bought this book for my mother in law as a present as she had been newly diagonaised with diabeties. Unlikely a lot of books I had looked at this was simple to understand, had good general information and also easy recipes. A lot of books seemed to have fancy recipes for food I knew she would never eat but this has great, easy recipes for everyones tastes. I was so impressed by the recipes I bought it for myself and im not diabetic. The recipes dont have photos but are really easy to cook, usually with some recipe books you only use about three or four recipes but this has countless recipes I am trying.
The information at the beginning explains about diabeties , how foods can affect diabeties and what foods can be eaten or avoid. Very clear infortmation that does not bog you down and is easy to understand. It is also great advice for those with family/friends who are diabetic.
Highily recommend , no nonsense book which I would recommend to everyone - diabetic. health conscious or just who likes good recipes !
helpful advice for the newly diagnosed and recipes that work, 13 Dec 1998
I have enjoyed this book, and have already prepared several of the recipes. It is well organised and contains a lot of information which I, newly diagnosed, found very helpful indeed.

I have enjoyed this book, and have already prepared several of the recipes. It is well organised and contains a lot of information which I, newly diagnosed, found very helpful indeed. No good for cooks outside the USA, 14 Aug 2003
This book is of no use to people in Britain, nor I suspect anywhere else outside the USA. It calls for very unusual ingredients, which you would be unlikely to have in the house, and would certainly have great difficulty finding in the shops. I go to a lot of different health food stores for my shopping, and none of them sell reduced acid orange juice concentrate, for example, or date sugar. The author also specifies particular brands (of fruit juice, potato mix - whatever that is - etc.) which are of course not available over here. On top of that all the meaurements are in CUPS. A US cup is not the same volume as a UK cup. The oven temperatures are also in degrees Fahrenheit only, with no Celsius of Gas Mark alternatives. Don't bother with this book - try something by Sarah Brown instead.
pecan pie recipe, 31 Dec 1998
I made this pie for my diabetic husband for Christmas. He could not tell the difference, thank you for such a gift.
Good sweet tooth satisfying recipes for restricted diets, 23 Mar 1998
The recipes in this book are very tasty. They are excellent for people who need to eliminate refined sugar from their diets. As most of the recipes call for fruit juice concentrates or other sugar sources one must pay careful attention to the diabetic exchange guidelines. My favorite recipes are the muffins and breads. I purchased the book to reduce the amount of sugar in my childrens diet as I felt it triggered hyperactivity. Most ingredients are available at the super market. A few require a trip to a well stocked health food store. The blueberry muffins are - quick and easy.

Misleading title, 20 Mar 2005
This book was a great disappointment. It should really be called Diabetic sweets, because more than half its content is given to what we English would call sweets ( candies for the Americans ).There are very few actual dessert recipes and most of those are classic recipes slightly adapted for diabetics in a way which any intelligent reader could have worked out for themselves. If you are looking for interesting desserts and puddings this is not the book for you.
A restricted diet doesn't have to taste like cardboard., 02 Jun 1998
I acquired my first copy of this book when my dad was in the hospital and was placed on dialysis and we had to make sudden and radical changes to his diet. Critical to us was that his diet required we monitor all dietary content. We were impressed with this book because listed for each recipe is a detailed breakdown of nutritional values including such things salt, iron, potassium, vitamins, calories, fat, sugar, fiber and a lot of stuff I never knew existed, but is critically important for someone on a controlled diet. Impressed with the variety and simplicity of the recipes and the extensive use of fruit, I later got a copy so I could try some of these delights for myself. Ms. Howard must have been psychic - I like apples, nuts, berries, chocolate (carob), and bananas and I need to keep an eye on my own diet. The recipes rarely take much time but are so tasty I need to exercise control. Included are over 100 recipes for sweet goodies, cakes, cookies and pies. This book may be the best thing to happen to someone on a restricted diet. Especially if that someone has to monitor their diet. But that's not all, it's really good for everyone, including someone like myself with a sweet tooth who simply needs to watch calories. Ms. Howard shows us that a restricted diet doesn't mean everything you eat has to taste like boiled cardboard! Her recipes are easy to prepare and taste great!

Not just for diabetics!, 19 May 2008
I've recently been trying to cut down on my sugar intake and have fallen in love with agave nectar, but there aren't very many recipes or food blogs online that cook with it at all. I bought this book as soon as it was published and I absolutely love it! The book covers breakfast foods, cakes, cookies, pies, sweets, drinks, and a huge variety of sauces, which is exactly what those of us on sugar-free diets crave! I've made the Raspberry Linzer Torte cookies and granola already and both came out so well they disappeared in days. They definitely didn't taste like "health food"! The recipes which are vegan or gluten-free are also really well labelled and the photography is worthy of an M&S food ad! I really haven't been this excited about a cookbook in years and I can't wait to work my way through more of it.

Very disappointing and not typical diabetic, 02 Sep 2008
I do read a lot of healthy cookery books and particularly those written for diabetics and I have to say that the recipes in this book are not at all like the ones I use. I understand there will be a difference in ingredients, language and measurements as it is an american book but how can you offer a choice of "low fat milk or whole fat milk" in a recipe. You never use whole fat milk in diabetic cooking. Also the author seems to be rather fond of using heavy cream in a lot of the recipes too. And using fructose in place of sugar is not the answer to healthy sweetening in diabetic puddings. I have learned to use natural sweetening such as fruits or small amounts of sugar and most recipes can be adapted to a healthier version. Jean Wades recipes were quite time consuming not simple, not quick desserts either which is expected for a family book to cater for everyones taste including the diabetic. The photo of the author on the back page was no advert for a healthy diabetic. Very disappointing so I returned it to Amazon. If you want some good diabetic cookery books look for anything written by Azmina Govindji.
This cookbook is the best yet., 03 Dec 2001
We have found so many great desserts in this cookbook..I am always copying recipes for friends..Thanks to Jean Wade.
