Its Helpful but too basic, 29 Nov 2008
An interesting book with humour and a few helpful hints but I have been cooking for a family for 30 years - probably of more use to the younger reader with limited kitchen skills - I will give this to my daughter in the hope that I might come home to a cooked meal that doesnt cost £5 a head and leave every pan and surface in the kitchen covered in goo! I am an optimist at heart.
Disappointingly several pages fell out as I read it so make sure you have sellotape to hand.
very very disappointed, 26 Nov 2008
The name of this book is exactly the opposite of what is inside. Anyone want to buy this book from me?
All you need for weekday meals, 24 Nov 2008
I normally don't like recipe books without pictures, but this isn't your average 'pretty to look at' recipe book. The format is as straightforward as the concept and the recipes. I'm not very confident about cooking meals (although I love baking), but the recipes and explanations are great. I love that there is a section on how to prepare vegetables too! Our first week of meals cost just under £30! This book has been just the thing to kickstart my way into making hearty healthy meals everyday after work without the stress or the long list of pricey ingredients. I love it!
I was disappointed, 23 Nov 2008
I bought this book as a present for my mum but i was very disappointed upon reading
The first quarter of the book is just jibber jabber rubbish talking about people and eating habits then you get your normal recipes which i expected from the book and lots of soup recipes. But for the Last HALF of the book it is desserts i thought this book was ment to be healthy diet Not all dessert if i wanted lots of dessert recipes i would have bought a dessert book. The main meal recipes that were in the book were good but nothing special, but as for the rest of the book i was dissappointed.
Finally! A book for real families., 18 Nov 2008
I can't praise this book enough.
I have accumulated plenty of cook books over the years that have been slowly gathering dust, as the receipes in them just don't fit my busy family life.
This book is different. Here, you will find a no nonsense practical approach to cooking affordable nutritious meals for the family, as well as hits and tips on tempting fussy children without giving them junk food.
You will not find gourmet recipes to feed a dinner party.
You will not find long lists of ingredients and even longer lists of preparation details.
What you will find are recipes for tasty meals with a minimum of fuss, and simple ingredients that are readily available.
I could go on and on about this book. Just take my advice. If you are the cook in a family or feeling the pinch or just generally too pushed for time to bother cooking decent food, buy this book!

be aware that some of recipes have a lot of added sugar. Not good if you're on any kind of diet!
handy helper, 28 Mar 2008
This book is a handy helper with lots of great ideas. The recepies are simple to follw and not too footery. I wish they would advise which dishes could be frozen and there are no top tips to alter the meals - as they do in the magazing - but this is still a gem of a book and a perfect size to have in the kitchen.
My Favourite Recipe Book, 16 Mar 2008
Great, easy to follow recipe's that are guaranteed to be both filling and tasty. I highly recommend the Pumpkin and Bean Spaghetti (pp 66-67)!
The only down side is that this book - like many recipe books - expects you to be feeding a family. I would have liked to have seen more recipe's aimed at serving 2 or fewer people.
Sterling Stuff, 21 Nov 2007
This little book was great. Had plenty of choice, book was well set out and the recipies were very easy to follow and the majority were relatively quick to make (vital for when you get home from work starving and could eat your body weight in food before turning on the kettle nevermind the oven). Having tried two of the recipies on the weekend (and not having killed anyone as a result) I declare this book a success!!
A great lil' cook book, 28 Feb 2007
There's a whole series of these '101...' recipe books from Good Food Magazine, and they're all bang on the money. The lay-out is concise (there's a recipe on one page, and a nice, clear photo of what the dish should look like on the adjacent page) and the recipes are simple and easy to follow; no single recipe is broken down into more than 4 steps. Of course, I haven't tried them all, but those I have were all successful ('Baked Buttery Squash' is my most recent favourite). What's more, you hardly notice the fact that they're all low fat.
I wouldn't say this is the only cook book you'll ever need, but it's definitely a worthy addition to anyone's collection regardless of whether you're looking to lose weight or not.

I was really impressed with the Recipe book.
I love Innocent Smoothies, though thought they were very expensive, and like many others, bought this book as a cheaper option. To make smoothies that taste good and are cheap.
I was thouroughly satisfied. I have made a few of these smoothies (without a juicer I might add) and they have blessedly tasted the same as the ones I love.
I would recommend it to anyone.
The posh ones are particularly good :)
The book was funny and a joy to read, with jokes and fun facts and even exercises to do while you make your smoothie.
Very high quality. Very impressed.

I have never really liked smoothies, milkshakes etc but as part of a healthy eating plan, thought I would be better snacking on these than crisps! This book is great, it has a good selection of both smoothies and juices and also a good insight on which fruit to use and what they are good for etc. It is very well written and has some delicious recipes- yes delicious! One thing to mention is that you will need both a smoothie maker and a juicer if you want to make all the recipes.
Lovely little book!!, 24 Feb 2008
Really good book, fantastic for the real smoothie enthusiast, bit over the top for me, but has given me lts of ideas for more child friendly smoothies. Really is a fantastic book just a bit fancy if all you want is basic smoothie recipes for everday use. BARGAIN
Fantastic Book... a real investment!, 20 Jan 2008
A great book!! Just the right size and jam packed full of not just recipes but also great advice on the produce needed and equiptment etc.
I'm also going to directly disagree with the previous reviewer and say that I cannot believe that from the very first recipe I attempted it tasted as great (if not better!?) than the shop bought innocent faves!! Plus living in the country has not hindered me one bit in finding the ingredients, a mixture of supporting a local fruit 'n' veg traders shop and anything unavailable from there (i.e. out of season) can be found in all large-ish supermarkets all year round.
So so sooooo pleased with the book I want to pass it around to my friends, but at the same time don't want to be without it, so will be buying them for birthdays and christmas!!
Nice recipes, 21 Dec 2007
Theres lots of nice smoothies in this book, although im finding it hard to match the same niceness as what you can buy. Also some of the ingrediants tend to be hard to come by living in the country!

Rosemary does it again, 25 Nov 2008
I have taken a bit of stick in the past for my reviews about Rosemary Conley products simply because I spout off about how gorgeous I think she is.Quite a few people have objected to my ravings about her and told me off for not commenting enough about her products.Well, she is still an absolute stunner,a dream of a woman but this time I will concentrate solely about this simply excellent cookbook.
This is one of her best books to date.It takes a short while to get to her recipes as Rosemary spends the first few pages talking specificly about diet. But when we do get around to the actual recipes they are absolutely mouth watering. What I particularly like about this book is that Rosemary caters for every taste bud with a section on puddings which is a very welcome addition. The recipes are beautifully presented and they do look relatively easy to follow even to a beginner like myself. The whole package smacks of quality.
This fabulous book would make a great present and I have no hesitation in recommending it.It really is presented in a very professional way and it will definitely impress anyone that uses it.Then there is the woman herself. If this book and it's recipes can make you look as good as Rosemary then you are onto a winner.Oops, here I go again, best quit while I'm ahead.Seriously though, this is a great and helpful cookbook and fully deserving of five stars for the extremely delicious recipes.
SIMPLY MOUTH WATERING, 30 Sep 2008
I have just spent my lunchtime pouring over this book, and I cannot wait to try the recipes out. Rosemary starts out with her usual splurg about dieting, and then explains about the Slim to Win Diet. There is a fat attack to start your diet, or you can simply personalise your own diet, and after looking through the book, you cannot fail by personalising. There are starters, lunches, recipes for meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians, and whole section on roasts and also a fail free christmas menu, and for those of you who have a sweet tooth a whole section on puddings. I simply cannot recommend this enough -

I simply cannot recommend this enough -
Easy healthy meals on a budget!, 04 Aug 2008
I got a copy of this book in the old cover style and it has definitely been a lifesaver.
All the recipes are easy, you don't need any fancy equipment and the dishes range from incredibly cheap to something to splash out on (Like the vodka chili!!) although the majority of them will definitely not break the bank.
Although it is a student cookbook I'd recommend it to anyone as some meals are impressive enough to serve to guests, but it also has fun family meals as well. All quantities are for 2 people so easy to divide or multiply up as well. I also like the snacks and standbys section at the end which has great lunchtime recipes.
This book was written by combining the Student cookbook and the Vegetarian student cookbook, so there are a lot of vegetarian recipes and a fair amount of recipes which are adaptable for vegetarians and non vegetarians. I found a few old favourite recipes in here but the grand majority are new dishes I'd never tried before and that made it fun as well.
Another thing I like about the book is each recipe is rated on how long it takes to cook and prepare, which is useful if you are starving. And the instructions are simple and concise so you don't get put off, without being patronising.
Best Buy for Student, 07 Oct 2007
Just purchased this book for my daughter who has just started uni. Although still living at home she has taken a sudden interest in cooking making me loads of luvverly dishes. The book is well laid out with easy instructions and the recipes are full of healthy ingredients which are easily accessed. I love the twist at the end of the book on how to make a banana sandwich!! I now know that when my daughter does move into accommodation she will be able to be self sufficient without pigging out on takeaways. Excellent stocking filler for all students

Good Nutritional Information but..., 26 Jun 2008
be aware that some of recipes have a lot of added sugar.

The book was funny and a joy to read, with jokes and fun facts and even exercises to do while you make your smoothie.

This book is great, it has a good selection of both smoothies and juices and also a good insight on which fruit to use and what they are good for etc. It is very well written and has some delicious recipes- yes delicious!

Excellent!, 02 Nov 2008
This is a really good cookbook for those with dietary issues. I avoid gluten and dairy, and although this book was just gluten free, it is easy to substitute soy milk or other non-dairy ingredients for the recipes in the book.
I made the Christmas cake last Christmas, and will be baking it again for this Christmas. It had a lovely baked almond 'crust' and was really moist inside. I've made quite a few of their recipes and they've all turned out really well - banana bread, yorkshire puds and the like.
The recipes are really easy to follow and well laid out. Most of the ingredients are easy to get hold of too - which is always a bonus!
Building recipes triumphantly out of fresh ingredients, 17 Oct 2008
Once you or someone you cook for are diagnosed as coeliac, you have a choice: either you try to keep your diet much as it was using gluten-free alternative versions of products, or you construct a new dietary regimen based on the things that you can still eat without risk. Pasta embodies this choice: it is off limits to the coeliac in its normal form, so you can either buy the gluten-free version (harder to obtain, more expensive, and frankly a bit peculiar in its texture and taste) or you can switch to a different source of carbohydrate that does not contain gluten, such as rice or potatoes, and use that when previously you would have used pasta. If you are already used to cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients, the second option will not be daunting and will ultimately prove more satisfactory.
This volume works on that premise: building a strong and varied selection of recipes for all times of the day, for the most part out of basic ingredients that require no modification for the coeliac. Those recipes are at the book's core. Some of them display considerable ingenuity: cakes, as you would expect, are a particular challenge to the gluten-free chef, and this book rises well to that challenge. Rice flour, almonds and polenta often take the place of wheat flour, with all sorts of ingenious ways of keeping these moist and flavoursome: who could resist, for instance, Lady Dundee's Orange Cake, which begins by simmering oranges for an hour or two until tender, then putting them in their entirety into a blender - peel, flesh, pips and all - and liquidising them? In other areas of the book the need for ingenuity in avoiding gluten is less, and there will be occasions when you are surprised glancing over a recipe for risotto, for example that the recipe is gluten-free because it seems so "normal" and lacking in any special difficulty. Which is, of course, the point I made at the start: it is possible to construct a perfectly acceptable, "normal" diet out of the numerous ingredients that are safe for the coeliac. The book is not, then, simply a guide to the things that are difficult to cook for a coeliac, but a balanced and rounded selection of all sorts of recipes, united by the fact one can be confident that anything in these pages is safe for a coeliac.
Recipes based on the ingredients requiring no modification are at the heart of the book. There is other material as well: a section of recipes to cook with gluten-free pasta, a whole section relating to basic carbohydrates such as breads or pizza bases, and an overview of the condition discussing which basic foodstuffs are safe and which off limits, buying gluten-free foods, eating out as a coeliac and so on. This would be suitable for a newly-diagnosed coeliac, their partner or, perhaps, someone about to get a visit from a coeliac relative or friend.
All in all, a balanced and wide-ranging book, with recipes of a high quality. You will find yourself passing recipes on to people who can eat gluten, and will hear them give that ultimate (and rather irritating) accolade, "you'd never know it was gluten-free". If you or your partner or child are coeliac, you will probably acquire a variety of recipe books as you explore the options open to you, but this will probably be the one you use most. If a friend or relative for whom you cook from time to time is coeliac, this is probably all you need, giving you a range of recipes that are appetising as well as safe, and a basic overview of the condition. Ultimately a recipe book stands or falls on the quality of the food described in it, and this, by building on those core ingredients that are safe, building on strengths rather trying to compensate for difficulties, passes that test with flying colours. Thoroughly recommended.
Lovely although a little complex..., 09 Jul 2008
A well balanced array of recipes in all. The recipes call for a myriad of ingredients, I make a fab Vicky sponge just substituting normal SR flour for Gluten Free SR flour and I also substitute butter as my hubby and I are also allergic to dairy. I need a recipe book that I can whip up something from when I get home from work. This is a good book for impressing a gluten free sceptic with though! As with most recipe books you need to use this in conjunction with your own recipes.
great recipe book, 25 Nov 2007
brilliant easy to follow recipes which always work and are also a hit with non suffers of coeliac disease chocolate brownies are amazing
Some super tips, 06 Jan 2007
This is a good book, as it encourages the reader to use normal ingredients rather than prepacked mixes, and offers recipes for basics which I never imagined I could substitute. Some of the highlights include the great tip of using rice paper wrappers as a crunchy coating for fish (you won't miss batter), the soda bread recipe, and the breakfast health bar which went down a treat - no-one guessed there was anything odd about it, and it's the first time I have cooked with rice flakes. In fact, this book allows you to cook for yourself and others, without things tasting odd or artificial. Although many of the recipes are too high in fat for me (this applies to Irish cookery in general), I have successfully reduced the fat in all cases.

Essential for Training!, 09 Jul 2008
A "must-have" reference book on nutrition for all athletes,body-builders,fitness buffs,runners,cyclists....anyone who trains.
Well laid out, simple to understand, and allows you to pick-up important little nuggets of information and adapt them into your training regime.
Will be well-thumbed in ANY gym by trainers and athletes looking for that LEGAL extra edge.
As important as your training plan, 16 Mar 2008
Anita Bean is to training and nutrition as Jamie Oliver is to cooking. Easy to understand and the methodology can be easily applied. However well you train, you won't achieve the optimum performance unless you have taken the right food and drink before and after a session, and taken it at the time that it will have the best effect on your body. Anita Bean not only provides that advice, but also covers weight gain and loss, young athletes, women, and 'veggies'. If you're half serious about your sport and fitness, you need this book. Whilst all the reviewers so far have given this book 5 stars, the best endorsement for me was when I recently attended an outpatients department and the young clinician who saw me reading the book said; "that's great, I read it at Uni".
Its a good book, 04 Jun 2007
I have been training for about 4 months now, and last ,month I bought a book from Amazon called Muscle Mechanics which was great.
But there was a piece of the jigsaw missing - nutrition.
I ordered this book based on reviews etc. And I am extremely happy to say it is all I will ever need. I know little about nitriotion, but this book has given me a much better understanding. I have already made adjustments to my diet and based on the advice in the book will start taking additional supplements. If your Vegan, young, old - this book is for you.
An actual COMPLETE GUIDE! Fascinating Reading, 15 Dec 2004
Admittedly I have only had the initial flick through and a read of the parts I found most interesting at first but I will read through the entire book when I get it back from my fitness enthuisiast work colleague who has borrowed it and is finding it as fascinating as I did. He does cite it as more of an academic book than a leisurely read but is still enjoying it anyway. I bought this with a hope of finding out more about how the body works during excercise and the part that food plays in that function and it hasnt disappointed me. Ive learnt exactly what I wanted to and more. Theres parts for working out your daily calorie intake and all those sorts of things. This isnt a basic 'basic' book but I wouldnt say you need a science degree to understand it at all - I think it does all the explaining it needs to. Depending on your reading style and intake, and given the content you may want to read this a couple of times. I found I picked up the parts that interested me most first time round but to get a complete clear understanding of some parts that I might need another read through - but thats just me - we're all different hey! Overall very good if your a fitness enthusiast and want to get into it further and have an actual understanding of how we work when excercising and the role food plays in it.
Essential Reading, 19 Oct 2004
This is one of those few perspective-changing books that you come across. I have been interested in weight-training, cardio activities and sports nutrition for a number of years, in the hope that I will improve my fitness levels and get leaner/more muscular. Up until reading this book I depended solely on magazines such as Muscle and Fitness for information and guidelines, but finding progress to be quite slow. This book changed everything. From the outset it is easily accessible but very informative, providing effective and revealing advice. As a result I am eating more healthily and effectively as regards to my training needs, and have found my progress to have quickened considerably. Extremely useful is the section on how much of carbs, protein and fat you need to eat for different goals (weight gain, fat loss, or sports-specific needs). It is ESSENTIAL reading to anyone who cares about their health, but especially for those who take their training and/or body composition seriously. Trust me, you'll be glad you bought this book!

Good Nutritional Information but..., 26 Jun 2008
be aware that some of recipes have a lot of added sugar.

Funny, Innovative and Fun, 17 Sep 2008
I was really impressed with the Recipe book.
I love Innocent Smoothies, though thought they were very expensive, and like many others, bought this book as a cheaper option. To make smoothies that taste good and are cheap.
I was thouroughly satisfied. I have made a few of these smoothies (without a juicer I might add) and they have blessedly tasted the same as the ones I love.
I would recommend it to anyone.
The posh ones are particularly good :)
The book was funny and a joy to read, with jokes and fun facts and even exercises to do while you make your smoothie.
Very high quality. Very impressed.
I am a Smoothie convert!, 05 Apr 2008
I simply cannot recommend this enough -
Easy healthy meals on a budget!, 04 Aug 2008
