First-class naval history, 02 Jul 2007
A really comprehensive work, combining 'top-down' strategy with 'bottom-up' derring do, and not omitting to pay due care to discussing the ships, aircraft and prevailing military doctrines on both sides. The guadalcanal was the most finely balanced campaign in the Pacific after midway, and in a sense it's a page-turner, as the more even match makes it more engaging and less of a requiem, as works on later-war battles such as Leyte Gulf tend to be. This is the second of a two-parter, so it left me wishing I'd read the first part first, but no matter, I shall place it on my wish list.
Only a couple of minor quibbles; the vernacular American can grate a little, and it could use a few more photos, but frankly for the very limited outlay, I doubt very much there's any better better work on Guadalcanal out there. Strongly recommended.

Fascinating account of a fascinating campaign, 31 Jan 1999
Martin Clemens provides a unique viewpoint on the Guadalcanal campaign. The book is compelling and indeed is a page turner for me. You feel as if you're there with him. If you're at all interested in this subject, and especially if you've ever been to the Solomons, buy the book.
Provides details not readily found elsewhere, 30 Dec 1998
Martin Clemens is deserving of our gratitude and respect. His book provides a view of the Solomons prior to the 8/7/42 landings by the 1st Marine Division and illuminates the activities of the islanders in support of the allied forces. The book is not really a "page turner." However, students of the campaign will find it interesting and informative.
