Comprehensive summary of the Nazi extermination program, its beginnings, development, and full-scale execution. Friedländer links the usual Nazi bureaucratic-organizational perspective with the major events of the war, the actions of the collaborationist regimes, of the Catholic church and of the Allies, of all major actors affecting the progression of events, together with letters from perpetrators and diaries of the victims into one terrifying and gripping tale about the plight of European Jewry during WWII. It is at times hard to go on reading, especially when you reach one of the many final diary entries in the book before the victim's deportation and death. You may be put off by the length of this book, however there are over 200 pages of notes and sources. The most comprehensive book I have read on the expulsion of Jews from German occupied territories and their allies. I say German rather than Nazi because this dispels the myth that the ordinary German did not participate or know about the actions leading up to and during the Final Solution. In many countries during this period the Germans provided the atmosphere for these countries to indulge their age old anti-Semitism with a vengeance. Few countries come out with any credit and many saw as it as a way to remove the so called 'influence' and 'corruption' of the Jew within their societies. Much of the book is made up of diaries, logs and records of the Jewish experience during these dreadful times, from day to day life in the ghettos, living in an increasingly marginalised world and of course the labour and death camps. The most heartbreaking entries are from young children and teenagers who attempted to cling onto to hope and their dreams of the future peaceful world. This major work is written in a style that informs and draws you in without burying you in technically dense detail. i have read this book 3 times and am now on my 4th outing with it. it holds a wealth of information for those wanting an insight into this definitive part of history, without some of the more polarised views that particular literature on the subject of slavery possess. it's good. peter fryer names his sources and all of these are easily checked and cross checked. i recommend this book to black and white, asian and indian alike, who may want an objective tool in summarising over 400 years of 'justified' murder, rape, theft and genocidal madness against a great people in their own right. well worth the money.

This book is fascinating and well written. It traces the history of Black people in Britain, who have made significant contributions to culture and history for several centuries. It also recounts movements against slavery and later against racism. Many things which are left out of the history books are here in this very serious and readable work.

i have read this book 3 times and am now on my 4th outing with it. it holds a wealth of information for those wanting an insight into this definitive part of history, without some of the more polarised views that particular literature on the subject of slavery possess. it's good. peter fryer names his sources and all of these are easily checked and cross checked. i recommend this book to black and white, asian and indian alike, who may want an objective tool in summarising over 400 years of 'justified' murder, rape, theft and genocidal madness against a great people in their own right. well worth the money.

It also recounts movements against slavery and later against racism. Many things which are left out of the history books are here in this very serious and readable work.

This book is helpful to the beginning bowyer, but it gets technical quickly, but it is well written, and helps you understand the reason bows do what they do. The section on bow performance and design is very good at getting the fundamental principles into your head, but it helped me, i felt to have read a basic bow building book previously, which was a book called Indian Bows and arrows, the old way. its on amazon, it helps feed the information in slowly, rather than overloading you with it too quickly

This volume covers making bows from boards, with particular emphasis on selecting suitable wood, eastern woodland bows, ancient european bows, composite (horn and sinew etc) bows, bending wood by steaming and heat, recurves, string making, steel broadhead hunting points, and a short section on quivers, is a good read but gets technical in places so helps if you are familiar with archery terminology. It would have been nice to have colour photos but it makes up for this with the sheer number of black and white ones.

this book contained the main basis for my a2 history coursework it was really helpful in answering some of the puzzling questions i came across while studying this subject. The cntent is great for someone doing a level and i would recommend it to all a level students doing this topic.

The book is incredibly usefull as a background text to the new AS modern history syllabus topic as the chapters in the novel are mirrored by the headings under which the exam board set out their specification. It provides the points of view of all groups concerned with the period and so gives students an overview of the period. The book also helps to limit the extra amount of background reading needed as many quotes from Historians and participants in the period of history which are incredibly useful for quoting in an essay or exam question. However, although the book follows the syllabus carefully it often moves away from provideing a chronological list of events, which although is poor essay writing style it is very useful for the understanding of students. Overall an impressive and coherent novel.

As some readers may be aware, a hoax e-mail has been circulating widely on the internet that falsely claims Amazon has favorably reviewed this book. This allegation is, of course, absolutely untrue. Nevertheless, this rumor has become so widespread on the Internet that it's already a recognized "urban legend," just like alligators living in the sewers. Although it's a pernicious fraud, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion has unfortunately had a widespread influence--all of it evil--on the history of the 20th century. It was exposed as a hoax in 1921, yet it has been used as a justification for the Holocaust and for innumerable pogroms in Russia and the Soviet Union.

The Protocols was supposedly written in 1897 from the minutes of 24 secret meetings between Jews and Freemasons in which they conspired to bring down Western civilization and jointly rule the world. In reality, it is nothing of the sort. In 1921, Philip Graves of the London Times revealed The Protocols to be a fraud, showing it to be based on a French satire aimed at Napoleon III. In a series of side-by-side extracts printed in the Times, Graves demonstrated that the forgers took long portions of the original text, titled Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, and simply replaced "France" with "Zion" and "The Emperor" with "We the Jews." Further investigations by the Russian historian Vladimir Burtsev revealed other sources for The Protocols, including a fantasy novel by Hermann Goedsche and, more darkly, the hand of the Russian secret police.

What any independent researcher has to ask is to what extent must the Global Elite go to rule us all in a New World Order that is so clearly emerging. Personally I think not, but rather they are an allegory based on the facts as seen by the author.

It is at times hard to go on reading, especially when you reach one of the many final diary entries in the book before the victim's deportation and death. Friedländer's explanation as to the ultimate source of the Holocaust, the superstitious view of Hitler and his associates that they Jew was the world historical enemy of civilization and culture, an idea which they quite successfully disseminated among the German population through relentless propaganda, is ultimately more convincing than for instance the ones given in Browning's study of Police Battalion 101, or Goldhagen's thesis in Hitler's Willing Executioners. You may be put off by the length of this book, however there are over 200 pages of notes and sources. The most comprehensive book I have read on the expulsion of Jews from German occupied territories and their allies. I say German rather than Nazi because this dispels the myth that the ordinary German did not participate or know about the actions leading up to and during the Final Solution. In many countries during this period the Germans provided the atmosphere for these countries to indulge their age old anti-Semitism with a vengeance. Few countries come out with any credit and many saw as it as a way to remove the so called 'influence' and 'corruption' of the Jew within their societies. Much of the book is made up of diaries, logs and records of the Jewish experience during these dreadful times, from day to day life in the ghettos, living in an increasingly marginalised world and of course the labour and death camps. The most heartbreaking entries are from young children and teenagers who attempted to cling onto to hope and their dreams of the future peaceful world. This major work is written in a style that informs and draws you in without burying you in technically dense detail. I highly recommend this book to both those who have a standing interest in the subject matter and the casual reader who wants to get a European wide understanding of this time rather than location specific information.

i have read this book 3 times and am now on my 4th outing with it. it holds a wealth of information for those wanting an insight into this definitive part of history, without some of the more polarised views that particular literature on the subject of slavery possess. it's good. peter fryer names his sources and all of these are easily checked and cross checked. i recommend this book to black and white, asian and indian alike, who may want an objective tool in summarising over 400 years of 'justified' murder, rape, theft and genocidal madness against a great people in their own right. well worth the money.

This book is fascinating and well written. It traces the history of Black people in Britain, who have made significant contributions to culture and history for several centuries. It also recounts movements against slavery and later against racism. Many things which are left out of the history books are here in this very serious and readable work.

This book is helpful to the beginning bowyer, but it gets technical quickly, but it is well written, and helps you understand the reason bows do what they do. The section on bow performance and design is very good at getting the fundamental principles into your head, but it helped me, i felt to have read a basic bow building book previously, which was a book called Indian Bows and arrows, the old way. its on amazon, it helps feed the information in slowly, rather than overloading you with it too quickly

This volume covers making bows from boards, with particular emphasis on selecting suitable wood, eastern woodland bows, ancient european bows, composite (horn and sinew etc) bows, bending wood by steaming and heat, recurves, string making, steel broadhead hunting points, and a short section on quivers, is a good read but gets technical in places so helps if you are familiar with archery terminology. It would have been nice to have colour photos but it makes up for this with the sheer number of black and white ones.

this book contained the main basis for my a2 history coursework it was really helpful in answering some of the puzzling questions i came across while studying this subject. The cntent is great for someone doing a level and i would recommend it to all a level students doing this topic.

The book is incredibly usefull as a background text to the new AS modern history syllabus topic as the chapters in the novel are mirrored by the headings under which the exam board set out their specification. It provides the points of view of all groups concerned with the period and so gives students an overview of the period. The book also helps to limit the extra amount of background reading needed as many quotes from Historians and participants in the period of history which are incredibly useful for quoting in an essay or exam question. However, although the book follows the syllabus carefully it often moves away from provideing a chronological list of events, which although is poor essay writing style it is very useful for the understanding of students. Overall an impressive and coherent novel.

The entire set of Bowyers Bibles are wonderfull.I must have read them all cover to cover a dozen times over the years, The information is invaluable to the novice and the serious bow builder.I especially love Tim Baker (the wildman)of bowyers he's always challenging the rules,and rewriting them.As a woman bowyer I understand challenging the rules.

There has been much great literature written by holocaust survivors, and this one is just about as good as any.

Primo Levi describes in "Survival in Auschwitz" the scheme by which those who could were able to maintain some sort of existance. Those unable to work are gassed, shot or beaten to death. Those who manage to survive are those who find ways to make themselves useful, without actual serioius exertion on the meagre rations. The lifeblood of the camp is "organising" - a black market where a stolen bar of soap is traded for a slice of bread; a potato for a scarf.

One difference between Levi and other Holocaust memoirs, is that he does not rely on an emotional appeal. He produces a trully excellent and insightful disposition of the the psychology of genocide. The emotional effects stems from Levis astute analysis, rather than being explicity given, an as such and as such are probably actually more effective.

It is a strange aspect of holocaust literatre, that in describing such terrible events they can engender such positive feelings in the reader. The way that those such as Levi can survive the horrors and somehow come out the other end as full human beings is inspiring to us all.

this book was a below average read,iv read much better books than this onthe concentration camps.i found this book very hard to stay interested in and found alot of times my mind would wander off and get bored of this book so i didnt bother finishing it.so i wouldnt recommend this book

Following the Auschwitz anniversary, I decided to read a lot more about the holocaust than I knew. Survival in Auschwitz by primo Levi was one of the books I read and loved. I consider it to be one of the most well-written, touching and compelling memoirs about the holocaust. Promo Levi is an excellent writer, with deep, lucid and compelling prose and insightful writing style. This book is one of the most influential books of my life.

After reading this book, I can't imagine any person not honestly feeling for humanity, and becoming compassionate no matter what the circumstance is. This well-depicted book is a recommendation for those interested in the plight of mankind in wars and other man-made and natural disasters. Read it and you will rave and pass it on to your friends.

please read this book. I have long studied WWII, no other work as so affected me to the extent of this book. Levi explains the ultimate horror. Imagine being stripped of everying, honor, clothing, self esteem. Self and worthiness. It is maddening. Levi produces a realistic, traumatic and horrifying portrait of what people went through not more than 54 years ago. Lest we repeat this lesson, it is important to listen to those like Levi. We all are capable of the ativistic characteristics of those we wish to distance ourselves from.

Comprehensive summary of the Nazi extermination program, its beginnings, development, and full-scale execution. Friedländer links the usual Nazi bureaucratic-organizational perspective with the major events of the war, the actions of the collaborationist regimes, of the Catholic church and of the Allies, of all major actors affecting the progression of events, together with letters from perpetrators and diaries of the victims into one terrifying and gripping tale about the plight of European Jewry during WWII. It is at times hard to go on reading, especially when you reach one of the many final diary entries in the book before the victim's deportation and death. Friedländer's explanation as to the ultimate source of the Holocaust, the superstitious view of Hitler and his associates that they Jew was the world historical enemy of civilization and culture, an idea which they quite successfully disseminated among the German population through relentless propaganda, is ultimately more convincing than for instance the ones given in Browning's study of Police Battalion 101, or Goldhagen's thesis in Hitler's Willing Executioners. It explains why the extermination program (up to the point where the Reich collapsed) continued unabated. The book is a remarkable piece of historiography.

Noteworthy points: Don't dismiss conspiracy theorists as merely harmless cranks--the animating idea behind the Holocaust was a conspiracy theory. The exterminations were widely known among the Germans relatively early and in the East where they took place. It wasn't just the Germans--the age-old hatred was all over Europe.

You may be put off by the length of this book, however there are over 200 pages of notes and sources. The most comprehensive book I have read on the expulsion of Jews from German occupied territories and their allies. I say German rather than Nazi because this dispels the myth that the ordinary German did not participate or know about the actions leading up to and during the Final Solution. In many countries during this period the Germans provided the atmosphere for these countries to indulge their age old anti-Semitism with a vengeance. Few countries come out with any credit and many saw as it as a way to remove the so called 'influence' and 'corruption' of the Jew within their societies. Much of the book is made up of diaries, logs and records of the Jewish experience during these dreadful times, from day to day life in the ghettos, living in an increasingly marginalised world and of course the labour and death camps. The most heartbreaking entries are from young children and teenagers who attempted to cling onto to hope and their dreams of the future peaceful world. This major work is written in a style that informs and draws you in without burying you in technically dense detail. I highly recommend this book to both those who have a standing interest in the subject matter and the casual reader who wants to get a European wide understanding of this time rather than location specific information.

i have read this book 3 times and am now on my 4th outing with it. it holds a wealth of information for those wanting an insight into this definitive part of history, without some of the more polarised views that particular literature on the subject of slavery possess. it's good. peter fryer names his sources and all of these are easily checked and cross checked. i recommend this book to black and white, asian and indian alike, who may want an objective tool in summarising over 400 years of 'justified' murder, rape, theft and genocidal madness against a great people in their own right. well worth the money.

This book is fascinating and well written. It traces the history of Black people in Britain, who have made significant contributions to culture and history for several centuries. It also recounts movements against slavery and later against racism. Many things which are left out of the history books are here in this very serious and readable work.

This book is helpful to the beginning bowyer, but it gets technical quickly, but it is well written, and helps you understand the reason bows do what they do. The section on bow performance and design is very good at getting the fundamental principles into your head, but it helped me, i felt to have read a basic bow building book previously, which was a book called Indian Bows and arrows, the old way. its on amazon, it helps feed the information in slowly, rather than overloading you with it too quickly

This volume covers making bows from boards, with particular emphasis on selecting suitable wood, eastern woodland bows, ancient european bows, composite (horn and sinew etc) bows, bending wood by steaming and heat, recurves, string making, steel broadhead hunting points, and a short section on quivers, is a good read but gets technical in places so helps if you are familiar with archery terminology. It would have been nice to have colour photos but it makes up for this with the sheer number of black and white ones.

this book contained the main basis for my a2 history coursework it was really helpful in answering some of the puzzling questions i came across while studying this subject. The cntent is great for someone doing a level and i would recommend it to all a level students doing this topic.

The book is incredibly usefull as a background text to the new AS modern history syllabus topic as the chapters in the novel are mirrored by the headings under which the exam board set out their specification. It provides the points of view of all groups concerned with the period and so gives students an overview of the period. The book also helps to limit the extra amount of background reading needed as many quotes from Historians and participants in the period of history which are incredibly useful for quoting in an essay or exam question. However, although the book follows the syllabus carefully it often moves away from provideing a chronological list of events, which although is poor essay writing style it is very useful for the understanding of students. Overall an impressive and coherent novel.
