A good read, but probably only 8 woofs out of 10... ;o), 05 Jan 2009
I thought this book would be good based on word of mouth. I have seen some of Cesar's shows and some of the things he said and did, seemed to make good doggy sense! Having said that the book wasn't necessarily quite as all embracing as I'd hoped. Though it was very good. It's also clearly a book for the US market, which is great but being a Brit I do enjoy books that don't feel quite so US focussed. Good book all the same but personally I felt I got the best out of my doggy reading by combining reading this with reading another doggy book (How to Handle Living with Your Dog) written by a Brit ( Winkie Spiers ) and which covered the whole of my experience with my adorable dog in a fun no nonsense (as it promised) fashion. If you're interested in my humble opinion then I'd say Cesar's book in combo with this book covers alot (if not all) your bases! (How to Handle Living With Your Dog: No Nonsense Advice on Puppies, Dogs, Pedigrees, Rescue Dogs, Heinz 57s and Their Puppy Classes, Dog Training, Canine ... and Diet & Exercise! (How to Handles) by Winkie Spiers).
Cesar's Way, 03 Jan 2009
This is an excellent instruction book because it lets you learn how to tap in to a dog mind, be prapered to change the way you interact with the dog, my dog was not bad, but because he was a rescued had some big problem,he had pofecional training but I realised his training was incomplet because I was not getting to the dogs natural mind,I have put the method in practise and it WORKS, he gets only half hour walk in the morning(Cesars Way)and 20 minutes in the evening on long leash. My dog is a Staff, and a strong one at that.
Hope this will benefite your dog and you.

Cesar's Way is the Magic Way!, 18 Nov 2008
"Cesar's Way" is truly a bible for us who love and have dogs. Growing up, my family always had two dogs. We always gave affection first, then discipline, and then exercise. No wonder we always had unbalanced pets who ran the household - it was opposite of what Cesar Milan teaches. Cesar suggests a simple formula in order to have a balanced dog. Exercise, discipline, and affection... in that order! Who knew?!
Cesar writes that dogs live in the moment and that they communicate using energy, constantly. We can learn a lot from our dogs. If we are lost in thought and neurotic in our behavior, our dogs will mirror our energy. When we are in the moment with our animals, our dogs have new possibilities with their behaviors, living a balanced life.
To live in harmony with my family's pet and other animals, I have to find harmony within myself. As Cesar Milan is the "Dog Whisperer", I see author's Ariel & Shya Kane as "The People Whisperers". I highly suggest reading their award winning books, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life, How to Create a Magical Relationship: The 3 Simple Ideas that Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. The less I work on myself, the more presently I live my life. It's great for my relationships with people and dogs!
interesting but nothing new, 06 Sep 2008
As said before if you watch his show most of what is in the book will be nothing new, if you are looking for advice on specific problems and how to cure them this is not for you.
It really just goes over Cesar's attitude towards dealing with your dog rather than any specifics.
It is nicely written and I did enjoy reading it and it did give me a push to be more confident around my dogs to help influence them which I do feel helps, although I'm not into alpha rolls or choke chains.
If you are looking for the miracle cures you see him do on TV, look somewhere else, like a trainer/behaviourist, but if you already have a dog and don't feel totally incontrol this may give you a bit of a lift to be more confident in their handling.
Not what I thought, 29 Aug 2008
This book is well written for the most part and almost appears to be an autobiography in places which is a plus for Milan fans.
However...
Having tried the techniques on my own dog I realised that they are not for everyone and should not be touted as such.
I also found the book to be more than enlightening on what these techniques ACTUALLY involve, which you dont get to see on the TV.
Unfortunately (and as an ex-fan I mean this whole-heartedly) it did not meet my expectations as a book for training advice, although it is still a good buy if you are looking for life advice or to know more about Cesar himself.

The story of mans best friend! , 05 Jan 2009
Marley and Me was a beautiful read, one that caused me to shed many tears during the last pages or so, paticulary when Marley was having trouble climbing the staris. Whether you like dogs or not the book is a good read that I think anyone can enjoy. Some of Marley's antics are hilarious, yet belivable. I defintely reccomend it as it focuses on John and Jenny's (Marley's owners) personal life and not just on Marley - their loopy lab! I can sum this book up in a few easy words - heartwarming, funny, realistic and a tear jerker. I guess what makes this book even more of a tear jerker is that it is based on a true story and I think, the way John Grogan writes it, is truly something! I think that the book also gives out a very good message, which I am sure, is in the film - Quote: 'A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his' .
I defintely recconmend this book but if young children want to read it, I advise them to read the children's version, as the adult's version deals with adult subjects e.g. miscarriages and murder etc but not in too great-a-detail! If you want to read a book that can make you laugh and cry (it starts off a bit slow but once it gets going, you won't be able to put it down!) I highly suggest that you read Marley and Me. I just hope the film will be as good as the book - 5/5.
Really did make me laugh and cry, 09 Dec 2008
This is a lovely book to read. I am an owner of 2 badly behaved dogs who I really love, so lots of the trouble that Marley gets into seemed very familiar and I found myself laughing out loud many times - not a book to read in public.
As the book progresses and you realise that the enevitable ending is approaching, I found myself getting more upset and ending up sobbing towards the end of the book - not usually a reaction I have to any book, although my elder dog is now 12 and getting blind/deaf so it made me think more about him.
Beautifully written and lovely description of Marley. Any dog lover should read this book.
A great read!!, 27 Nov 2008
What a great book to read.
I have never read a book that had made me laugh out loud so much but also cry as well. I loved this book and would esp recommend it for dog lovers.
BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!, 14 Nov 2008
This is the best book i've ever read. When reading this it makes you laugh at all the bad things marley did but then the end is so so so so so sad. A great memoir for a great dog I say. Can't wait to see the film version, out here February 2009 and out in America on Christmas day 2008. It's got Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston in it so it's got to be as good as the book.
The best book I've read in years!, 29 Oct 2008
Having owned a labrador myself, I fully expected to enjoy this book, but it exceeded my expectations by some considerable margin. I laughed and cried out loud. The style of writing is hilarious, and I truly believe that even a non dog lover would be entertained.

I was very disappointed with this book as it is merely a greatly reduced precis of each tv episode. Not much help if you have a problem dog looking for the solution or training
Excellent resource for learning 'pack leadership', 17 May 2008
For those who want to expand their knowledge and abilities with dog leadership skills this book provides valuable tools for achieving that goal. Every episode from Cesar Millan's first 3 series of 'The Dog Whisperer' is reviewed and analysed. This in depth analysis helps to make very real the method which Cesar uses.
Unlike 'dog training' Cesar and others who follow the 'pack system' focus on creating harmony and balance in our dogs. We use our dog's natural and hard wired instincts to create change which allow them to 'be themselves'. This method helps to meet our dogs needs rather than us just getting our needs met when we get love and affection from our dogs.
This book allows us to get a much deeper understanding of the way Cesar uses the 'power of pack leadership' to help create happy balanced dogs. The book also gives follow ups which help to see that even with Cesar's help some dogs and their owners are unable to make the desired changes.
This book provides a valuable guide that is well written and very concise. Whatever breed of dog you have, whatever age and whatever your dogs problems you will find help in the pages of this book.

Doggone fantastic!, 08 Oct 2008
Love Martin Clunes, love dogs, loved his recent documentary about dogs - so all good. This book does tally with the tv programme about history of dogs but the bits I actually enjoyed best are his own personal history with dogs and his present day trials, tribulations and joys with them. Just one thing - I'd love to know how Mary is these days.

Product Description
The behavioural problems covered in The Dog Listener will sound all too familiar to anyone who shares their life with a canine companion. During the 25 years that Jan Fennell has been working with dogs, she's been increasingly aware of the ways in which communication between man's best friend and ourselves has broken down. Inspired by Monty Roberts, Fennell embraces similar ideas to those found in The Man Who Listens to Horses. Rather than trying to fit human psychology to animals, the starting point is observing how animals communicate, how they structure their groups in the wild and what they think their role is. Initially Fennell looks at the role that dogs have played historically--primarily a working role, in which human and animal worked side by side to the same goal. Many owners flinch as the idea of a dog "working", with associations of oppression and hierarchy. But dogs naturally form a hierarchical society with the strongest, most intelligent dog leading the pack. Humans might thrive on the concept of democracy but dogs don't automatically feel the same way. When we understand and respect a dog's mindset, effective training can be done with intelligence and compassion. Each chapter deals with a different case study and owners of problem or "challenging" dogs will be kicking themselves as they realise just how wrong they've been getting it all this time. Some myths dispelled: "Tugging games are fun and it makes my little dog happy to think he's the winner." Wrong--if you let the dog win it reinforces the idea that he is the top dog in the group. "My dog can't bear to be left in the house ... because he loves me so much." Wrong--your dog thinks that he is responsible for you, the acute anxiety that results from separation can be likened to that of a mother who's has a toddler wander off by itself into untold danger. Much of what we do to show affection to our dogs actually has the result of creating insecurities and confusion. In this respect many ideas are similar to those in John Fisher's Think Dog, particularly on remedies for anxious and aggressive dogs. Here though, the use of real life case studies offers encouragement that following this advice can initiate a rapid transformation in your dog's behaviour. Jan Fennell writes with affection and a real conviction that sharing her work with others can make a real difference. Her wide and admiring audience of happy dog owners would indicate that the title of "dog listener" is a highly appropriate one.--Tony Martin

Disappointed, 21 Nov 2008
Excellent, 10 Oct 2008
This is excellent and I would very highly recommended it. Having three Border Collies (two of them rescues with various problems), life could be difficult at times, to say the least. Jan Fennell's approach has been virtually foolproof for us, and in the end we were the ones needing training! If you follow her instructions consistently (and forever), pretty much any unwanted behaviour can be sorted out. I also highly recommend Turid Rugaas' 'On talking terms with dogs - calming signals'; it's an invaluable aid and accompaniment to The Dog Listener.
Dreadful, 28 Aug 2008
This book is evidence that you can fool quite a lot of people quite a lot of the time. There is not a single original idea in it, and Fennel's beliefs arise out of an interpretation of wolf behaviour that is entirely false. If you want the relationship with your dog to be based on oppression and frustration then this is the book for you, otherwise read something else.
Thoroughly inspirational, 11 Apr 2008
I found this book thoroughly inspirational. Jan Fennel has hit on something which simply works. It is purely logical and rational and just from putting things into the dogs perspective allows us to understand how they think and therefore why they sometimes behave the way that they do. I bought the book at the same time as getting a puppy and my 3 month old puppy now walks at heel with no need for a lead (though I still use one) and is a beautifully behaved member of our family.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
nothing new, 21 Mar 2008
Jan Fennell has been clever and repackaged old knowledge, she seems to have set her self up as some sort of guru.If a dog pulls on the lead it does not make it an "ALPHA" it just wants to get to the park quickly, if the dog walks by your side does it make it your equal? When you get to the park and you let the dog off the lead and runs around arond in front of you does this make the dog an alpha, no.
So many things wrong with this book i would urge dog owners to do more research.
Fantastic, 04 Feb 2008

OK but not great, 10 Dec 2008
After having watched Victoria Stilwell's TV series and being impressed by her no-nonsense approach to dog training I bought the book as part of our preparation before we adopted two dogs. It certainly offers some helpful tips but some areas are treated quite superficially. While not bad it might better be complimented by one or two other books, not to mention professional advice and training classes.
Really helpful!, 01 Dec 2008
I found this book to be really helpful. It is split into very accessible sections but I have to admit that I read it cover to cover in one sitting! The pictures are lovely and the advice is really sound and I have put a lot of it into practice with our 10 week old puppy and it has had very positive results. Highly recommended.
Good tips, 30 Sep 2008
Enjoyable read and informative, very good training tips but my dogs still a bit naughty, must be me!
Easy to dip into, 28 Jul 2008
I bought this book after one of the two puppies I adopted was showing signs of agression when being lifted up. In a panic I ordered several dog training book and I have found this one the quickest to get into and easiest to find exactly what is needed. I found that it was most useful regarding the lead training section. The puppy with the agression didn't budge when hooked onto their lead but as the book recommends I waited her out and eventually she walked and we haven't looked back since.
A disappointment, 27 Jun 2008
I was given this book for a birthday present, but was very disappointed with the content. There is a great deal of posturing, fluff and glamour but very little practical advice. Lots of 'I cured this dog' but very little of 'How'.
Great pictures, but very little else to commend it. Sorry.

Disappointed, 21 Nov 2008
I have watched the dog listner on the t.v and found her theories very interesting so purchased her Book. The book is so easy to read with jan sharing her memories of how she started out and her ups and downs not hiding her mistakes. I was in tears during part of the book and fully empathise with her during her experiences. An excellent easy reading book that you can't put down
OK but not great, 10 Dec 2008
Sorry.
This book is awful!, 26 Dec 2008
I'm a dog lover, a rescue lurcher owner and have a saluki cross, which is why I hate this book!
The story unfolds as the owner progresses on a steep learning curve as to how to adapt to owning both a rescue dog which is also a saluki lurcher. Sadly, the owner shows nothing but ineptitude throughout the book and puts his dog at risk through misguided obsession as to its beauty whilst running free. I won't argue that a dog should be able to run but not at the risk of its life!
I was also disappointed to find he isn't just an ordinary dog owner but a professional writer also, something which I find hard to believe as most of my (not very bright) secondary pupils can write with more accuracy and charm than this individual.
He then concludes the book with his intent to own a pure Saluki having never even suceeded with dealing with the issues of his current hound...cue a second book!
And sure as dammit he releases one. I rather generously alluded to the writer's learning curve at the start of this review, unfortunately he didn't learn a darned thing as he progressed on his 'adventures' with Ollie.
Needless to say I won't be buying the sequel and if I was a breeder having read his book, I wouldn't sell him a dog either.
(P.S. I tried to give this book away free on several dog internet sites that I use that know the breeds involved - NOBODY was interested...says it all really)
Incredible read!, 11 Dec 2008
This is the best animal book I have read, funny and moving. Any animal owner or lover will enjoy this tremendously, you'll definitely relate to all the hilarious and emotional tales of Ollie's eventful time!! A fantastic read - I would recommend Walking Ollie to anybody.
Disappointing, 08 Dec 2008
I got about half way through this book. In that time I think I learned more about the author's love of sport than Ollie. Although I hope Ollie had a good life, I wasn't prepared to waste my time reading the rest of the book to find out, because there really wasn't that much in it about the dog.
Excellent , 01 Dec 2008
Walking Ollie is very touching and tender and a great read too. a must buy for all dog lovers and very funny as well.
disapointing, 01 Dec 2008
I also had read marley and me and this was nowhere near as good it just wasnt as funny or written as well.

Regards
Ellen Robbins
