"Could do better...", 16 Dec 2007
A book that tells you that "rabbits and guinea pigs can live together" and that rabbits "don't need toys" does not figure very high as both of these are out & out lies.
It has it's good points; but to a new rabbit owner who only has this book they wont know better. Best to buy in conjunction with another rabbit book; or do on-line research also.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
fabulous, 01 Oct 2007
this series of books are ab fab. I cant put them down. They cover much more than the usual rabbit books, although they are great. This series really go into the ins and outs. it has been invaluable for my small pet hotel for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters bedsforbucks.com. You have to just keep picking up these books there is so much to learn
great book, 22 Aug 2007
A very well priced book which contains excellent advice and interesing information on rabbits and rabbit care. Despite having several other books on rabbits, including the specialist Harcourt-Brown vets book, I find myself turning to Rabbitlopedia whenever i want to assure myself that I know what my (10!) rabbits (or my vet) is up to. Obviously there will always be a few glitches in any work - and our understading of rabbit lifespan, and some elements of rabbit diet have changed even since this book was first printed, but it remains the most accessible, most readable, and informative book that i have come across. It also doesnt go for the 'cutesy' bunny cover that so many other books suffer from!!
worth it's weight in gold, 21 Aug 2006
I have borrowed this book from my local library time and time again. Now they wont let me renew it anymore, so guess what? I am going to have to purchase it for myself.
We are first time rabbit owners and I have found this book to be extremely helpful and invaluable.
I highly recommend it.

fantastic all rounder book, 01 Oct 2007
Ive not been able to put this book down, its fab. everything you have ever wanted to know, explained and illustrated in detail, but in a clear manner. I run a small pet boarding hotel www.bedsforbucks.com for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters and this book has been invaluable
A must have for ANY piggy owner, 07 Dec 2005
I got this book 2 years ago. Since then I have found myself referring back to it time and time again. It contains very detailed, but straighforward help on choosing a guinea pig, and caring for it, the anatomy of the guinea pig, A-Z of hamster diseases, breeding, and showing them. I have 17 years of guinea pig experience, and still found this book to contain things I didn't know about them. I would recommend this book to any guinea pig owner, no matter what experience you have. A truly brilliant book.
Absolutly imperative for every guinea pig owner, 19 May 2005
I have a lot of guinea pigs and believe I have read almost every book on the lovely little subjects. This is by far the most useful, comprehensive and beautifully laid-out book I have seen. I have read and re-read it, it's my bible which I am constantly refering back to. Alot of the guinea pig books tell you all the same sort of information which gets boring. This is a fantastic book and I very highly reccomend it to new and experienced, young and old guina pig keepers. It's a good as having a guinea pig vet at your finger tips, I would not be without mine!!! GET IT, KEEP IT AND LOVE IT. Don't even bother with the rest unless you come accross one by Mr Keeling who writes the most enchanting tales of putting his guinea pigs on trains with gummed labels on their ears for shows in the 50's, really funny book.

Fantastic book, I really recommend it, It contains everything you need toknow as a new Guinea Pig owner plus a lot of information for the moreexperienced keeper. It is a must for any guinea pig keeper! Neither for new or experienced owners, 09 Aug 2008
For anyone who has not condidered using treats to condition a rat to perform "tricks", this book will contain at least one useful idea - but seeing that I've just told you about that, it is now left with no useful suggestions...
What a new rat owner needs to know is how to teach their rats to trust them, to enjoy being handled and picked up, to WANT to be handled and picked up. This books touches so briefly on the subject that a new owner would be no more knowledgable after reading it. Which implies that the book might be aimed at a more experienced owner - but the remainder of the book is full of suggestions and "ideas" which would patronise any but the most inexperienced owner.
So in summary, not enough help for the new owner, not enough ideas for the experienced owner. Training your pet rat: a very good read, 29 Mar 2008
This book informs you on how it's best to train your rat. It uses easy to read descriptions and would reccomend it to first time rat owners. My only critisism is that a few of the pictures are a bit dull but apart from that it is a wonderful read. It's ok, 18 Mar 2008
I've had rats as family pets before and i know how great they are so i went out and purchased a couple. I figured i might need some help as they were female and i've only had males before so thought this book may come in handy.
It's ok to an extent but i feel alot of the information is pointless. Reading through the book i couldn't help but feel like i was reading a kids book. All together the book is quite good as it does offer some useful tips, particularly the tips on how to make the cage great for pretty cheap. However if your just referring to the book now and again i think it is a bit pointless as individually the tips offered don't really work that well and I found that alot of the processes it suggested were more of a hinderence such as how to handle the rats so that they won't be scared of you anymore. Rats, like people, are unique so what works for some rats may not work well for others suggesting that the writer hasn't done a great amount of research.
Overall it is a good book, but if you do buy this book you should probably get another book that is more detailed so you can gain a wider knowledge. If you've had rats or have had some for a while it's probably not a great deal of help but if you don't want a heavy read then it's probably the book for you.
hope this helps A great guide to rat training, 23 Jun 2005
When I got this book I didn't think it would be very good as it is quite thin but I was wrong. This book is good for mainly begginers but is good for experieced owners as well. It uses an easy to understand style of writing and in every chapter they use the names of two rats to help explaining. As well as a training guide this also helps with many other issues such as travelling with rats and how to introduce new rats. Overall this book is very helpful and I would definatly reccomend it for new rat owners.
Excellent book for new rat owners!, 26 Apr 2002
This book came highly recommended to me by several rat owners so I thought I'd give it a go!...I certainly wasn't disappointed! As someone who is planning to get rats this book is full of useful information regarding their training and care. It goes far beyond what the title suggests with chapters on preparing for your new pets, choosing rats, building trust, play time and so much more. It contains interesting sections that you wouldn't find in most rat books as many authors wouldn't bother to mention things like harness walking, playing outside and roll around balls etc. - as someone who has never owned rats before I found these small tips very useful and helpful when buying supplies and knowing what to expect. There are some lovely photos in the book which are not only incredibly cute but also really demonstrate the points being made. Unlike some pet books there is plenty of information to accompany them too! The section on introducing new rats would be helpful to any owner and I found the chapter on play time gave me some good ideas. I particularly liked the way the author also suggested homemade substitutes as well as shop bought items. If you are an experienced owner and really looking for a serious training book then perhaps this isn't the book for you. The training sections in this book are more for the first time owner, focusing on general trust building and calling by name which you can then build on rather than more intensive tricks etc. Overall I think this is a brilliant book covering all the essentials and full of good advice. It's a very complete all round care book and I would certainly recommend it to any rat owner. You certainly get your money's worth!

The must have hamster book, 20 Sep 2008
I have 5 hamsters, 3 Syrians and 2 Campbell's. This book is widely acknowledged by hamster owners as the book for hamster owners. In fact if you are about to get a first hamster then your shopping list should include this book, infact it should be the first thing you buy. With this book givving you all the essential information you need for hamster care and more you will be able to get the most enjoyment from your pet.
This book is so good!, 10 Apr 2006
I have 6 hamsters. 2 of them are Syrians and the other 4 are Campbells Russian dwarf hamsters. I wish I owned this book in May 2005 when 2 of my hamsters had unexpected litters. This book is really useful. I only got it today and I can tell that is going to be really handy if I ever have any problems with my hamsters. It helps you find out what breed your hamsters is. It even has information about how to catch you hamster if it escapes! Even if you only have 1 hamster I would advise you to get this book. I love it! It has lots of good information and quite a lot of cute pictures too!

Brilliant, 18 Jan 2005
I got this book 2 years ago when my hamster had an unexpected litter. Since then I have found myself referring back to it time and time again. It contains very detailed, but straighforward help on choosing a hamster, and caring for it, the anatomy of the hamster, A-Z of hamster diseases, breeding, and showing them. There are also beautiful photos of hamsters. I have 17 years of hamster experience, and still found this book to contain things I didn't know about hamsters. I would recommend this book to any hamster owner, no matter what experience you have. A truly brilliant book.
Bunny love, 26 Mar 2008
This is an adorable little book, filled with lovely ideas of how to bond with your pet. It's very cute, and simple enough for most kids to understand, but it's equally enjoyable for adults. Rabbits require more attention and care than you might realise, and this book gives you suggestions for easy ways to make your bunny feel at home. It can take a lot of work to get your rabbit to be trusting and affectionate, but these easy steps help you towards a rewarding goal. Share the bunny love!

Rabbits have a lousy time in our society. They live in small hutches, ignored, fed the wrong stuff, and left in solitary confinement. This book tells you what a rabbit needs not just to be healthy but to be happy. Read it and buy it for anybody who is thinking of getting one.

You have to just keep picking up these books there is so much to learn great book, 22 Aug 2007

Guinea Pig lopaedia, 21 Apr 2004
Rats, like people, are unique so what works for some rats may not work well for others suggesting that the writer hasn't done a great amount of research.

the book is lacking insome areas!, 05 Oct 2008
I was expecting a really good book after reading the other reviews on this sight, they were the reason i chose the book. Yes the book provides alot of info on rabbits and their care but it is also lacking abit. For example in the outdoor hutch section there is hardly any mention of bedding let alone the fact that rabbits must have plenty of hay(or other suitable bedding) to snuggle in in winter. some people may even think that rabbits don't need anything in their hutch!
The book is american and they obviously house their rabbits differently to us as they say oudoor hutches need wire mesh floors that allow the poop to fall through!(very unpleasant for the bunny!)although they do say that 1 third of the bottom should be solid as buns who stand exclusively on wire day in day out do get sore hocks and infections!!!???
Another gripe is the section on housing sizes they say the minimum hutch size for an average 6 pound rabbit is 2ft x 3ft. that is too small. The animal welfare law says
"It's not acceptable to keep a rabbit alone in a small hutch, without the ability to exercise.
Hutches should be a minimum of 6 x 2 x 2 feet - ideally with an attached run to allow the rabbits to exercise.
Runs should be a minimum of 6 x 4 x 4"
Not enough is said about how important it is for rabbits to have company although quite alot is said about 2 buns being double the work. It is ok to have a single rabbit indoors if you are around alot of the time but to put a rabbit down the bottom of the garden on his own makes for a very lonely life.
The info on myxomatosis is relevent to the us where it is not so much of a problem but not clear enough for the uk.Rabbits in the uk must have vaccinations twice a year to help prevent this hideous disease.
All in all it is quite a good reference book but could lead to some housing problems.
Excellent all round rabbit refernce guide, 07 Jan 2008
This is a great book for beginners and experienced rabbit owners. It provides a good format for quick access to the information you are looking for.
Originally I bought this before a got my first rabbit and read it from cover to cover (something I highly recommend). Now I use it as a quick reference guide as it has a good index at the rear.
It is aimed more at American rabbit keepers and there are lots of contacts for rabbit supplies etc in the USA, however they have not left out vital information for the rest of us. There is good information on vaccinations for diseases such as Myxomotosis and VHD, something which I believe is not as crucial in the States.
There is information from diet to accommodation, behavior to illness. And although it is not a medical book, I believe there is a good amount of info on illness and how to spot is your bunny is sick for the average rabbit keeper to put their mind at rest.
I would recommend this book to all rabbit keepers and rabbit keepers to be.
Bunny perfect, 29 Dec 2005
This is a fantasic book for every bunny owner. I especially recommend it to people who are considering getting one, as they can really prepare their homes and attitudes for the little newcomer. Lots of useful information on our little friends. Highly recommended.

What can i say? Except buy it!! I am extreamly knowledgable on rabbits, some might say an expert, but even i learnt a few new things!!
rabbits, rabbits, and more rabbits, 13 Apr 2004
I wanted a rabbit a couple of months ago, but knew nothing about them. So when i came across 'Rabbits for Dummies' i bought it. It helped me chose the rabbit i wanted and also helped me to care for it. It tells you what a good cage is to how much to feed them. I now know alot about rabbits and i am very happy that i bought it. The best rabbit book around.

Great, 11 Aug 2005

rabbits, rabbits, and more rabbits, 13 Apr 2004
I wanted a rabbit a couple of months ago, but knew nothing about them. So when i came across 'Rabbits for Dummies' i bought it. It helped me chose the rabbit i wanted and also helped me to care for it. It tells you what a good cage is to how much to feed them. I now know alot about rabbits and i am very happy that i bought it. The best rabbit book around.
A great read to help make your bunny happier and healthier, 03 Jan 2007
I just loved this book. it may not be glossy and full of pictures but the quality of the read is what is most important. I have learn't so much from the book and have enjoyed trying massage on my bunnies which they certainly have appreciated. It is perfect for bonding with your bunny and is great for any bunny whether they are poorly, elderly or just in need of some pampering.
I rescued an elderly bunny who had been very mistreated. he responded very well to massage and learnt to trust me very quickly. the book is easy to follow and well worth adding to your book collection!!!
I throughly recommend this book for any bunny owner.
Relaxed Rabbit Review, 19 Dec 2006
I received the book as a gift from a friend and it has turned out to transform my relationship with my Rabbit. I've always liked to stroke my bun but this book has helped me communicate at a totally new level with him. The book is in black and white (not surprising for a short run self published book), so don't expected National Geographic level photos. However the diagrams and photos are more than good enough quality to see what needs to be done and once you try it your bunny will simply melt under the touch. This isn't a coffee table book (unless you want to start a discussion with someone on the benefits of pet massage) but it's a thorough and pratical guide on how to massage your rabbit and produce a really close bond with your pet. Strongly recommended, it honestly changed my whole relationship with Colin (my 2 year old Dutch)
Good idea shame about poor print, 09 Mar 2006
This is a super book for those of us who aim to do the very best for our bunnies. Touching, stroking and so forth are basic massage techniques and this book enables you to build upon those already known abilities and do true massage safely. However, I must say that I was astonished at the poor print quality and most of the diagrams are so poorly printed so as to be illegible. the photographs too are poor quality black and white photocopies in essence. Without the photos and diagrams the techniques are harder to understand, you never know if you are doing it in a bad area as can't see from the diagrams. Also books without pictures however earnest are dull and sadly this is pretty dull especially as medical terminolgy is used but without being able to read the reference diagrams it is nigh on impossible to follow the intructions. A super idea but I remain agog that the printers sent out books of such poor quality as the reputation of the book has suffered hugely as a result. Books are no good if you can't read them! Poor bunnies have missed out here.

You have to just keep picking up these books there is so much to learn great book, 22 Aug 2007
I highly recommend it. the best all round rabbit book ever!, 21 Apr 2006
gives you everything you need to know about your rabbit with information you never thought about. it helped me loads and i strongly recommend this book to everyone i have several rabbit books and nothing came close to this. with everything about feeding medical problems tips on care full history about rabbits everything about rabbits is in this book a must have! 100% recommended. thankyou. fantastic all rounder book, 01 Oct 2007
Ive not been able to put this book down, its fab. everything you have ever wanted to know, explained and illustrated in detail, but in a clear manner. I run a small pet boarding hotel www.bedsforbucks.com for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters and this book has been invaluable A must have for ANY piggy owner, 07 Dec 2005
Guinea Pig lopaedia, 21 Apr 2004

Small in size, big in welfare., 25 Jan 2007
Rabbits have a lousy time in our society. They live in small hutches, ignored, fed the wrong stuff, and left in solitary confinement. This book tells you what a rabbit needs not just to be healthy but to be happy. Read it and buy it for anybody who is thinking of getting one.
the book is lacking insome areas!, 05 Oct 2008
It is ok to have a single rabbit indoors if you are around alot of the time but to put a rabbit down the bottom of the g | | |
