sets the standard, 31 May 2008
This book sets the standard for owners/prospective owners of Tortoises. Unlike many other books which offer contradictory advice, this is a straight forward and accurate guide on the subject. Well worth buying.
good buy, 18 May 2008
Gives you everything you need to know. I found that I knew more than the 'breeder' when it came to buying a tortoise.
Excellent, 28 Jan 2008
This was the first book I read on tortoises and nothing else comes close. Easy to understand. Manages to answer all those niggling questions with a down to earth approach leaving you wondering why you did not think of that! Brilliant!
Fantasic!, 16 May 2001
This book was so helpfull, I have not owned a tortiose before and this book got me off to a great start. I would recomend this to anyone who is interested in buying or breeding turtles or tortiose. Also if you are serious about buying a tortoise or turtle it is well worth joining the tortoise trust.
Simply the Best, 19 Feb 2001
Having read many books on the care of tortoises, I have to say that this is the very, very best ever. Guidlines and facts are concise without being too complicated for the lay person to understand. Many books and guides on this subject are either ill/under-informed, simple pet guides or incredibly technical and complicated beyond comprehension. This is neither, being spell binding from start to finish. Whatever you might need to know about the general welfare of the tortoise, it is here. Well worth double the price, but, having said that I've already got my copy! Well done Andy Highfield.

very useful book, 31 May 2008
Having remembered tortoises being very popular in the 70's as a child,I wanted another Tortoise and to be able to look after it properly. I have read a couple of books on the subject, which seem to contain an awful lot of contradictory advice. This book is definately one of the better ones and provides a good level of information for the tortoise owner. I would definately recommend it and would advise anyone interested to look on the web site for The Tortoise Trust(UK) as they provide excellent books/advice on the subject. Phil
Good Guide, 11 Jun 2007
I purchased this book as it contains information on how to choose a healthy pet, choosing the right housing and guidance on feeding and regular excercise. I recommend this book for all pet onwers. Good work.

Excellent introductory book on the subject, 16 Oct 2006
Having inherited a Leopard Gecko from an unwilling owner, before it arrived I thought it best to find out how to look after it ! This book covers everything you need to know, as a first time owner, about these interesting little creatures. They are just about the easiest reptile to keep, and they have character, are attractive and can become very tame. This book definitely whets the appetite for further expansion and covers all the necessaries.
I have a few books on Leopard Geckos now (I believe in trying alterantive views to get all sides of the story), and this is the best (and cheap too).
Very discriptive, 16 Mar 2002
very good bok, applied a bit more science than the other books i have checked out, (im still a prospective gecko owner), had a great deal on breeding and rearing, and a good section on diseases, which ive been told is not always included (in as much depth), it included a section on the similar species the african fat tailed gecko, has a summerised scientific paper at the end, good book and interestin read, i now feel that i have as much info on geckos as i need
Superb reference from one of the leading herpetologists., 15 Dec 2001
Philippe De Vosjoli is widely regarded as one of the world's leading herpetologists. The Leopard Gecko Manual should be every prospective leo keepers first stop before the pet store. It serves to give a great insight into this fascinating creature and inform newcomers to reptiles of some of the most important factors in creating a healthy environment for a Leopard Gecko. This book is great as a reference for the more experienced keepers also, including chapters on breeding, rearing youngsters, gecko illnesses and more. I recommend this publication wholeheartedly, it's had pride of place on my bookshelf for years.

this is a must have!, 05 Aug 1999
i've seen books on leopard geckos but this one takes the cake! this not only has up to date information and is from one of the top and most well known reptile authors, but also has parts that the other books just don't have. it has many colour photos of some of the most popular colour mutations of not only leopard geckos, but of one of its cousins, also a popular pet, the african fat-tailed gecko. this book also includes some studies done on the leopard gecko and some short introductions to some of its other close relatives fron around the world. if you have leopard geckos, have had them for years, or are planning on getting some, this is a must have! it is worth every penny!

idiots guide but only covers the basics, 03 Mar 2002
This I will admit is a good basic book for the first-time snail keeper. However it fails to go into enough depth to be truly informative and will not provide you with the info you need to give your snail the long life it is capable of. What it omits to cover is the fact that though snails are easier to keep than many exotics, they are still exotics and there are many many situations that it does not cover. As an experienced keeper who has at present 7 species of african snail, and who has been keeping snails for over 10 years, I can assure you that this book does not tell you everything you need to know. It is simply a very basic beginners guide.
An excellent book for teachers who have a "snail in school", 06 Oct 2001
A useful resource for answering all the questions that young enquiring minds will ask you about this facinating creature. The illustrations are colourful, clear and provide an added learning bonus when using the information for teaching. The book itself is a handy size, easy to display and use, but also containing a wealth of in-depth information written in an easy to understand way. This book is all you need!
Excellent book for first-time snail keepers., 05 Dec 2000
This book is a very comprehensive guide to keeping giant snails. It tells you everything you need to know and has very good illustrations.

Brill book!, 04 Jan 2009
This is a really helpful book if you're a proud dragon owner :)
It's helped me a huge amount, especially when breeding our dragons. I'd advise any beadie owners to buy this, especially good for new owners but great for anyone no matter how experienced. TRES BIEN, 27 Nov 2005
What a book! I honestly think its the best bearded dragon book ever. It tells you everything you need to know(housing, feeding, handling) to stuff you don't need(species names, types of "morph", and other stuff.....)I highly recommend this book it manage to change my mind from a big ig to a brilliant beardie! sets the standard, 31 May 2008
This book sets the standard for owners/prospective owners of Tortoises.
Phil Good Guide, 11 Jun 2007
I purchased this book as it contains information on how to choose a healthy pet, choosing the right housing and guidance on feeding and regular excercise. I recommend this book for all pet onwers. Good work. An Essential Guide In Nutrition For All Tortoises & Turtles, 14 Apr 2002
This small paperback book is an essential guide in nutrition for all tortoise and turtle species. There are chapters on: Nutritional disorders Toxic plants Vitamins, minerals and the use of supplements and Wild and natural foods. All chapters are very informative and it is an essential guide for any tortoise or turtle keeper. Not only have I found this guide invaluable as a tortoise owner, but also as a veterinary nurse with a special interest in tortoises and turtles. I recommend this book to all my clients that need guidance.

Easy to read, 12 Nov 2001
very clear and easy to understand. Lots of relevant information. As a novice turtle keeper it has been a very useful guide
Manual for beginners, 08 Nov 2003
I expecteded more. It treats all the essential points of how to create and mantain a reef aquarium, but only has a few but important information about the corals. It's not expensive, and for a beginner I recomend.
I recommend this publication wholeheartedly, it's had pride of place on my bookshelf for years.

i've seen books on leopard geckos but this one takes the cake! this not only has up to date information and is from one of the top and most well known reptile authors, but also has parts that the other books just don't have. it has many colour photos of some of the most popular colour mutations of not only leopard geckos, but of one of its cousins, also a popular pet, the african fat-tailed gecko. this book also includes some studies done on the leopard gecko and some short introductions to some of its other close relatives fron around the world. if you have leopard geckos, have had them for years, or are planning on getting some, this is a must have! it is worth every penny!

A very helpful book, but based in America, 19 Apr 2008
This is a great book for giving an overview and introduction to anyone who is thinking of getting a corn snake. It covers everythign from basic requirements and recomendations for chossing your first snake to diseases and disorders. There is a long section at the end covering the various morphs (colours and patterns) that have been selectivly breed, including many colour pictures.
The book does have negative points, the primary one been that it is American. This means that the ligal points mentioned are not applicable and some things that are legal in America, such as feeding live prey which is mentioned repeatedly, are illigal in the UK so these sections are of less use.
This in mind it is still a highly recomended book for beginners simply because there is nothing comparable published by a UK author, however it is also advisable to seek advice from a specailist regarding some of the issues that the book does not cover
Worth a read for anyone considering a corn snake!, 19 Nov 2007
Well written and very comprehensive guide to owning a corn snake. Great for first time buyers as this book tells you information more advanced books sometimes miss out, such as how to hold a snake...not always obvious to first time owners. Well worth a read!
corn snakes, 13 Jun 2007
Corn snakes was the best selling corn snakes book in the uk you could not take your eyes of it.
Beginners view, 16 Aug 2006
Corn Snakes the Comprehensive Owners Guide is exactly what it said. It was full of usefull information for me as a beginner. Covering all subjects from, where to get your snake, how to choose a healthy specimen, Basic housing requirements, Feeding, breeding, diseases, and handling techniques. which was fine for me. Then it covered subjects like the history of Morphing the basic snake colours and patterns. the law and owning snakes.I think this is predominantly the American Law, as it mentions feeding live pinkies to troublesome feeders. I understood that we could not feed live animals to our pets. For anyone who is thinking about buying a corn snake this is the book for you.

This book gives a good introduction to owning a terrapin. If you intend to buy a terrapin or have recently bought one....or even if you have had one for a while but are not certain if you are looking after it correctly then this book will suit you. Short but to the point it gives basic information on terrapins, looking after them including heating, lighting, etc, through to a small section on diseases. This is a good start at giving your terrapin a ling and healthy life.

Good for the basics, 11 Nov 2003
This book gives a good introduction to owning a terrapin. If you intend to buy a terrapin or have recently bought one....or even if you have had one for a while but are not certain if you are looking after it correctly then this book will suit you. Short but to the point it gives basic information on terrapins, looking after them including heating, lighting, etc, through to a small section on diseases. This is a good start at giving your terrapin a ling and healthy life.
What you need to know., 15 Mar 2007
This book gives you the basics of what you need to know about caring for your corn snakes. It is better set out than most and I found it incredibly easy to find the information that I was looking for without having to trawl through pages of irrelevant and some times useless pages.
Basic but useful..., 07 Oct 2004
I found this book useful for caring for my corn snake (which i now finally have). It ofers a varied but basic account on Housing and Feeding, as well as lots of pictures. Its not very long however, and i finished reading it after about 45 miniutes. You should buy it for a genral outline on corn snake keeping, but don't expect to become an expert...

Manual for beginners, 08 Nov 2003
I expecteded more. It treats all the essential points of how to create and mantain a reef aquarium, but only has a few but important information about the corals. It's not expensive, and for a beginner I recomend.
