Fantastic easy to understand read, 09 Jun 2008
I bought this book as I'm a novice to greenhouse gardening. This book is a must for others like me. It is written in an easy to understand manner and is structured so that you can pick out the sections you want or need without having to wade through endless pages of the stuff you don't want - not that there are any pages in the book that are surplus to requirements! The illustrations and photographs are very helpful too. The author doesn't use jargon or techno speak beyond the understanding of beginners and manages to instill the belief that greenhouse gardening is quite achievable for anyone who wants to have a go. Full of tips on what you need and don't need to buy also. An excellent book overall.

good reference to a beginner, 01 Mar 2004
Having bought my first greenhouse and full of enthusiasm and eager to grow everything, I found this book to be a great companion. Divides the seasons, indicates suitable seeds and plants to grow, and give the absolute beginner like myself, a direction without too much information and technical plant info too soon! thank you, my greenhouse is currently full of seedlings in February!
A very good basic guide, 11 May 2003
I particularly liked this book because it is not devoted to the choices of greenhouses - like most people, mine came with the house. I wanted a book that would get straight into the basics and this book does that. The photographs are very clear and the 'tips' sections on most pages are like having your own garden expert on hand. Each season's tasks are covered with lots of relevant facts and tips. All in all a wothwhile book for learning the basics that ensures that your greenhouse is used for more than just tomatoes!

Now I will get the chance to sit back and enjoy the abundant crops that I am sure this book will help him achieve!

It is a must for gardeners new to Polytunnel culture.

A seaweed drench for seasoned growers!, 25 Oct 2008
I agree with 3britsabroad that this is an inspiring read for even an experienced food grower (except I went out a bought 4 vines!). In fact I think its a great book for any seasoned grower that needs to refocus or tighten up on quality. I will try very hard to plant up my new strawberry bed "a stride apart" and my new blueberry bushes have had a bog environment created for them. Yet again Bob is showing us we can do better with out costing the Earth.
This would also be as excellent gift for any aspiring food grower as Bob's experience will save them many years of frustration and poor croppping at the same time as inspiring them to have a go!
Useful guide for growers and gourmets!, 18 Jan 2008
A Really Useful Book. I grow a lot of fruit and veg (and have done for many years), yet still found this an inspiring read - so much so that, as soon as I'd finished the chapter on grapes, I ordered three vines for growing in pots!
It provides easy to understand advice on growing quality organic crops that can't be beaten for flavour and freshness. I'd recommend this book for any grower or gourmet, especially if your heart and mind tells you that you could easily reduce your food miles and your taste buds tell you that you can eat better whilst your at it!

An exellent and informative book. It deals not only with the structural aspects of building a conservatory and maintainance, but more importantly with all the wonderful plants you can now grow. I found this the area of the book most useful and prior to finding it, the hardest to obtain info on. There are several sections dealing with different plant groups and within each many plants are described, often with a clear photo. The care of the plants is explained along with growing conditions etc. It has become my most used reference book.

Well, rather splendid, I should say!, 14 Jul 2008
Having been sent one of these by the publisher as a thank you for writing some of it, I was initially furious. The state of some of these constructions lead me to realise that the term 'Luxury' was at best misleading and at worse, tantamount to a declaration by all things that squirm and cough weakly beneath the foetid earth that the horned one had tapped out his pipe on his cloven tootsies and wandered out onto old hades' patio once more, scratching himself and yawning something about a 'bruising.'
There and then, I promised myself and all you good people that I would definitely attend the next editorial meeting, tree house, tea house or sea horse's stable yard - yes!
However, a closer inspection soon showed me how wrong I was and what a jolly good read The Luxury Greenhouse Calendar really is! It certainly opened my eyes to the myriad forms and intricacies of allotment architecture and the fascinating characters, all true no doubt, that inhabit these shimmering beauties.
I know what I'll be doing with that postal order from Aunty this Christmas - buying this and all the other Luxury Calendars. I'll be emersed in boats, hidden away in sheds, go careering in caravans and dump daily drudgery in skips!
I just hope I don't wish my life away, overly eager at the turning of a new month, a new year. I wonder if TGE would send me several years in advance...?

I am a "home-user" with a 8x10ft cedar greenhouse, and am looking for easy to follow advice together with exciting new ideas - this book does not provide either! The book covers the subject of greenhouses in HUGE depth, but this seems to be aimed mainly at the commercial and professional user. An example of the type of content is under the descriptions of compost, it actually goes in to the chemical content! No criticism of the actual book, just be warned that if you are a home user, this is probably not the volume for you!

Excellent Reference for Old Hands & New Gardeners Alike, 31 Aug 2005
I purchased this book for my husband who has had his nose buried in it ever since! He is an experienced gardener but his recently acquired polytunnel has brought new challenges and this book has helped him out tremendously. Now I will get the chance to sit back and enjoy the abundant crops that I am sure this book will help him achieve! want to know about gardening under cover? here's the book, 05 Jan 2002
The book is a comprehensive guide to growing under plastic, including fleece, black plastic, cloches of all different materials, cold frames and finally showing you how to erect a Polytunnel. It's easy to follow instructions make it simple for a beginner like me to follow. It includes a comprehensive guide to the growing of flowers and vegetables, taking cuttings and overwintering tender perennials. It is a must for gardeners new to Polytunnel culture. Practical and useful, 16 Jun 2007
Excellent book with many interesting projects, good photographs and easy step-by-step instructions. I particularly liked the decking & pergola projects. This is a must for any DIY enthusiast who needs ideas for garden construction projects.
I'd recommend this book for any grower or gourmet, especially if your heart and mind tells you that you could easily reduce your food miles and your taste buds tell you that you can eat better whilst your at it! exellent, 07 Mar 2003
Not aimed at the amateur/home user, 02 May 2002
I am a "home-user" with a 8x10ft cedar greenhouse, and am looking for easy to follow advice together with exciting new ideas - this book does not provide either!
This book will hold your hand every step of the way., 20 Apr 1999
I built a greenhouse last summer. Without this book I would still be struggling to get things right. Whenever I was confused or frustrated, this book was there to help out. If you are considering a greenhouse, GET THIS BOOK. If you already own a greenhouse, GET THIS BOOK. Everything you could want to know is covered. It is amusing and written in plain old garden speak. You will recognise in the author, a fellow gardener with dirty fingernails, just like yours!!!
Too much repeating info, no natural insect control, and OLD, 09 Apr 1999
Why do authors repeat info page after page? half the book is not worth reading if you aren't growing all the hundreds of plants it list, each page has a seperate page with mostly the same info as the page before over and over and over. Its find if you read one and skip the rest that you could care less about, but then there is only 200 pages of not very exciting info. But the big deal is that I found these processes out of date and could not get Any of the phone numbers it list. Does the author think that the greenhouse industry has been sleeping for 10 years? I think he forgot that thousands of new products and designs that take the worry out of this fun hobby. But after all this I would buy this and all books on greenhouse because one idea is worth the money!
Same stuf in most gardening books!, 13 Dec 1998
My problem with this well written book is that it is OLD, the proccesses decribe about greenhouses and pictures has to be 20 years old The greenhouse industry has made so many big new changes lately that old ways are not the best. It is not a good source for serious growers and that the greenhouse info is good only if you plan to use it on a old greenhouse.Half the book has info on growing plants that you can find simular info in hundreds of good gardening books. This book has too many old addresses and phone numbers and I could not find any most of these. Try a new edition of what ever greenhouse book you buy to really be successful and have more fun with this great hobby!
Excellent, 21 Nov 1998
This is the first book you should buy if you're starting to garden in a greenhouse. It may be all you need. Does not cover building a greenhouse, but covers every thing else.
Most practical, concise, easy-to-use book on greenhouses., 01 Oct 1998
This book is so well-organized that even though its absolutely packed with information on so many aspects of greenhouse growing, its easy to find what you need at any given time. Initially it was so helpful to me in getting started and now it is my best reference book. I particularly loved the design, pollinating and propagating sections, and the advice for individual flowers, vegetables and herbs. The information about plants that like it cool/warm or shady/sunny helps me decide on seeding dates and locations. There are plenty of practical tips, lists, appendices, charts and inserts.

great for beginner and those with gardening knowledge., 09 May 2002
A great book at a good price.Ideal for the first time greenhouse owner aswell as experanced owners. It has advice on what to grow, pests and how to treat them.great advice all-round.
Unfortunately I bought it as a present for my husband an extremely keen gardener and it was mostly not applicable as it was geared for USA
Good basic info but..., 13 Dec 1998
Too old info, there is too much New greenhouse information left out here. It seems the author has a desire to help but does'nt know of any of the new break-threws in this industry. Greenhouses have changed 100% from the wooden A framed house. Now they have many different designs thst can save heating cost 50%. Get some new info on greenhouse and you'll have more FUN.
