Top Gear for "children", 02 Dec 2008
I bought the Big Book of Top Gear 2009 but returned it immediately as it is far too childish. It is a bit like buying a comic book for kids. Very disappointing. I'm giving it one star just because it's nearly Christmas.
Good book to accompany the series, 29 Nov 2008
My brother (who's in his late 20's) saw this book and said he wanted it, so i first went out to check it out. I forgot to check this book out but looked at the annual, but found that to be aimed at children (incidently, i found the annual is very good and has lots to do in it). I then ordered it and after reading some bad reviews, i started to worry. Today, i went into a shop and saw one, and to settle my nerves, i had a look at it. I enjoyed what i read of it. For those who complain that there are things from the series in it, it is a companion to the series, so it will have things already seen, which is expected of any book which comes from any series (cookery, comedy to name a few). Secondly, for those who say it's daft, top gear is a daft series anyway, and found a lot of stuff that would be said by the guys. If it had been about cars, then it would have been boring. The magazine focuses on the actual cars so if that's what you're after, then this is not the book for you. If you want a laugh and are a fan of the series, then this is for. After all, if it hadn't been good enough, it wouldn't have carried the top gear label with it. I'm looking forward to receiving the book and know my brother will love it.
FUNNY, 19 Nov 2008
I don't even watch Top Gear that religiously but I bought the book for my brother for Christmas. I opened it to write a message in the cover and ended up reading most of it! I laughed out loud on so many occasions, it is SO funny!! As funny if not funnier than the show.
A 'Marmite' book, if ever there was one..., 17 Nov 2008
You have to be a fan of the show to even have a chance of liking it (too many in-jokes for anyone who doesn't watch it regularly) but even then it's still gonna divide readers into two groups, lovers and haters.
To love it you'll most likely have to be either a teenager or one of those spikey-haired Evo-with-big-exhaust owners (or wanabee owners) who really think all the lads' messing about on-screen is GENUINELY funny, rather than just very mildly amusing and worth putting up with in order to see the good bits of the show.
I am a die-hard fan of the show - have been for years - but honestly...
Another reviewer compared it to one of those kiddie 'Annuals' - I agree, I think what they've done here is create a niche product, an Annual for teenagers rather than kids. This is NOT the TV show in book form - the show is SO MUCH better.
Excellent value and fun!!!, 17 Nov 2008
This easy read is this years ultimate stocking filler. It will make you want to re-watch all of the Top Gear episodes, so would be the perfect accompaniment to a box set.
It is appropriate for any age, and you don't even have to be a fan of the show. Be prepared to experience `lol' moments, and don't take it too seriously. excellent value for money!!!

A Book for whom, exactly?, 26 Nov 2008
The book is, as other reviewers have said, misnamed, since virtually no actual making is involved; instead it offers ideas on how to decorate ready made items. It offers no challanges in terms of craftsmanship;indeed, from the sewing skills involved, it would seem to be aimed at primary children, but I can not imagine any child wanting to make these projects. A pointless book, all in all.
More adorn than make, 21 Nov 2008
I have to say I was really disappointed with this book and it would be better entitled 'Embellish' or 'Adorn.' No single project is made from scratch as each project starts with the main item already bought or already owned.
Good coffee table book for CK fans but not really crafty, 09 Nov 2008
It looks like opinion is divided on this book so I've opted for an average rating. I actually really like the book for what it's worth. I paid £4.99 for my copy but did not get the free extras which was a bit disappointing. It's a good quality, colour coffee table book that's bright and cheery and nice to flick through the pages. However as already pointed out in several reviews, there is nothing to actually 'make' here, it's all embellish. I don't know how many of the projects I will undertake because given the choice I would rather BUY Cath Kidston products than customise them myself but you never know, they might make a nice rainy day craft project. What I do like about the book is the copyright free templates in the back and the patterns that you can use on any projects so I'm sure it will come in useful some day. Otherwise I just like to look at the colourful pictures.
Great book for the credit crunch!, 29 Oct 2008
I am a huge Cath Kidston enthusiast, so I jumped at the opportunity to get this book and make my own projects using Cath's own motifs, and with 16 motifs and 30 projects to choose, and a free tote bag to get started, I thought this was a pretty good deal.
The book is suitable for both beginner and the semi-pro crafters and includes a section at the back of basic sewing tips and techniques. With the current mood for make-do-and-mend, I think some personalised projects with the aid of this book would make good christmas presents on a budget.
brilliant, 17 Oct 2008
I think it's a smashing book. With different levels of skills it means it can be used for both adults and children and makes a great present for those cold wintery days when you want to stay in and be creative.
i love it

A definite recommendation, 09 Oct 2008
I would most definitely recommend this book to the new and excited knitter.
I had only been knitting for a week or two when I bought this book, and within days I had moved on from the plain and simple garter stitch to purling, ribbing, creating cables, forming shapes, increasing, decreasing and designing my own shapes.
The step-by-step instructions accompanied by pictures make the book a valuable addition to any knitting bag. Each new stage feels like a gradual step forward and takes away the fear of new stitches. What seems like an impossibility at first glance rapidly becomes a simple manoeuvre, and confidence grows with every accomplishment.
I often take this book to bed with me, just to find inspiration and rejoice in my new passion!
Easily the best book for beginners, 05 Oct 2008
I couldn't knit at all, so got hold of a few books. Of all the ones I tried, this was by far the easiest to follow, with the clearest instructions. It's also funny and down-to earth. I'd recommend getting a DVD as well, so that you can see what you're supposed to be doing. I got 'The Art of Knitting' which again, is clear. With the help of those two, I'm happily knitting now!
Tired old feminist politics, 09 Aug 2008
I thought we had left Ms Stoller's particular brand of political feminism behind back in the 1970s but sadly it would appear that she is stuck in the past and regurgitating the old, tired, strident politics and trying to tie them to a great craft. There are much better books on knitting around which do not find it necessary to bludgeon the reader with outdated politics on every page.
Great Re-Introduction for the Lapsed Knitter, 02 Jul 2008
I havent knit a stitch since I was ten years old, so I had completely forgotten everything about knitting. This book is a great re-introduction to the knitting basics and I found the diagrams and descriptions really easy to follow. The authors writing style includes lots of personal knitting experience stories which are inspirational and it also makes the book a good bedtime read too! I read the book on a Sunday night, its now Wednesday and i'm halfway through my first scarf, and thoroughly enjoying it!
Perfect for branching out, 26 Mar 2008
I knew the basics of knitting before I purchased this book but hadn't progressed beyond making stripey garter stitch scarves. This book was well suited to my needs, and I still go back to it for reference and to re-create my favourite designs. The introduction is interesting and provides an insight into the world of knitting as well as giving detailed technical instructions, with plenty of diagrams and photographs included along the way.
The patterns are perfect for a beginner - intermediate level knitter and the range of skills required are varied. There's everything from simple scarves and hats, to using circular needles, cabling, colourwork and socks. An experienced knitter might find this useful for the classic sweater patterns, but it is definitely intended for someone who is learning and getting to know the ropes. The book is clearly written and easy to understand. You'll be itching to get started on some of the beautiful projects and this is a great book to have in your collection.

How to draw. .. somethings, 16 Feb 2006
Although a very good book for your money (a cuple of quid (£) isn't a whole lot is it) I found this book lacking somewhat. Although easy to read it isn't easy to learn from and can stub out your excitement at drawing when you come across the word "assignments" at the end of every chapter (if your in college, you know what I mean!). These tasks include things like going out and drawing random people and things you see or from magazines. We all know that practise makes perfect but the tasks at time just seem very strange and not something I'd want to do. The images in these books are for the most part uninteresting and yes i know that the book is "How to draw" but it would have been nice to see some colour as the whole book is in black and white, really not for children (especially as part of the book is on drawing naked people, mostly females). Saying all this though the book is arranged into nice chapters and has certainly started to teach me how to look better. It wasn't a complete disapointment, but for serouis artists and those already with a solid skill this isn't the book for you.

If you are a complete beginner and do not aspire to fine art, or just want to draw as a bit of fun then get this book. If however you want to draw 'properly' do not get this! I would recommend 'The Complete Book of Drawing' by Barrington Barber
Well worth it, 25 Jan 2005
My mother found this book and was amazed at the price. She is learning to draw portraits, and wanted a book that showed her how to do things step by step, especially with facial features. Not only does this book provide valuable tips and examples on portraiture, but it also shows you in detail how to draw landscapes, people in general, animals, buildings, and practically everything else. My mum has since created some wonderful pictures just by using this book (different mouth shapes, noses, eyes) and is entirely happy. After seeing her copy I went and bought my own (I want to improve my drawing of people) and I have to say, it is brilliant. Understandably, the key IS to keep on practising, but at this price you cannot get a better book.
Excellent Value, 18 Oct 2004
For a complete beginner like myself, I couldn't draw for toffee! This book has inspired me to draw landscapes in a simple to follow manner. My family have been amazed at the ease to which I have taken to this new hobby. Very easy, concise and enthusing narrative really is motivational. I thoroughly recommend this book for people such as me who like things simple!
Not even worth it, 05 Jul 2004
I bought this book because I am currently learning to draw. This book is aimed at the kind of level you would expect of a toddler, and totally useless for anyone who's at all serious about drawing. The advice is so basic as to be simple common sense, and the illustrations within the book are far from inspiring. Save your money, buy yourself 3 pencils (2h, 3b, and 3b), an eraser, and a pencil sharpener. It will be a more useful use of your money.

With different levels of skills it means it can be used for both adults and children and makes a great present for those cold wintery days when you want to stay in and be creative.
i love it damn good, 15 Jan 2006
i dont normally read books but i got this for christmas and i couldnt put it down, now i plan to get a shed for my birthday and live in it get it get it now A definite recommendation, 09 Oct 2008
I ordered this book after already having the christmas addition but this one is certainly the best from the collection.
The ideas are inspiring and the photogrophy is gorgeous. I love it. Ive made a few items and the instructions are clear and straightforward.
Highly Recommended.
A real feast...but beware beginners!, 17 Oct 2008
Definitively a truly inspiring book, I have had the book for 3 weeks already made 2 projects out of it...but not quite for beginners as there are not many details provided for each project. Also, for the second project I had to make adjustments as the pattern provided (jumper for the teddy was just never going to fit!)was just not quite right.
Nevetheless, it made me sew again after a 5 year gap...
..., 21 Sep 2008
Best book bought for a long time...., 14 Sep 2008
The moment i received this book i could barely put it down for days, beautiful pictures and easy to follow, all the projects are items you would want to make! Have already tried two projects from the book and have not been disappointed with the result.
An inspirational delight, 31 Aug 2008
I was fortunate to be able to flick through this book before I ordered it from Amazon. This book is the favourite of both my son (12!) and my daughter, for it's dreamy, shabby-chic inspired theme. It is an ode to the home, and the room-by-room treatment of offerings is a perfect way to inspire the crafter to visualise a complete makeover! I love this book so much, that I ordered the Christmas version, which is just as lovely. However, since I can't see us adding the flying pigs to our Yule-time trimmings, this book remains our favourite to curl up to, with a cup of tea. I made the fabulous living room quilt as my first ever quilting project, and am delighted with the result, even if it is deliberately different to the original. There is not a single project in this book that I don't adore, including the daft little strawberry pin-cushion things. Even projects that I will never make, delight me at every turn of the page.
This book is a must for the armchair decorator, stitcher and crafter. Directions are better suited to those with some experience of following shop-bought, sewing pattern directions, or those who can grasp how to create three-dimentional items from two-dimentional fabric, but there are enough projects to suit complete beginners, too.
Everyone should own this book for the warm-fuzzy-feeling it imparts!

Nina Garcia sure knows what she's talking about. She gives the best definition of style in this little book beautifully illustrated by Ruben Toledo. She provides a solid foundation that will help you to develop your very own style though the hard work is left to you (and there's a lot that has been left aside eg colours and bodyshapes).
It may take some time but once you've figured it out, it's one of the most exciting journeys of life. What I particularly liked in this book is the link to art and all the unexpected places where you can find inspiration. The secret lays in a few words: Make it your own.
The things I liked least about the book is chapter 4 called 'what to wear when' that I found somehow useless because most of us already have a sound idea of what to wear when going to a wedding or a job interview, this is just common sense that didn't need a full chapter in my opinion. I would have expected more development on what to wear according to the seasons or the weather as I often find switching from one to the other a bit challenging.
The chapter containing the basics are fairly known already and despite I agree the little black dress is a must, black is not a colour that suits everybody as well as for ballet flats. So I'd say don't follow everything in the book to the letter but give yourself a good look in the mirror and decide whether some of these basics are for you or not. You may find other basics that totally work for you (as for myself it's tights, boots and berets). Some contradictions too: She mentions that it's not about money (which is true) though she makes many references to top designers throughout the book. As much as I appreciate luxury, we all know that the majority of us will never be able to afford these unless they save for months if not years.

I found this book amazing, and plan on reading it a second time, this time carrying out research on the way. The underlying message is wear what you want as the most stylish item is your self-confidence. When reading the book's 'setting the scene', it makes you wish you were a witness to Nina's life as it sounds so exotic and indulgent, and makes you just keep on reading.
The clothing items you are advised to invest in are classic items that you always promise yourself you will buy, but in the end you let your head run away with the latest trends and go for the pair of rainbow platform shoes instead of the black cashmere cardy. This book gives reasons as to why you should believe in the basics, the crisp white shirt, the black cashmere. The only downfall is that it has the most beautiful drawings of chic ladies, but when the book describes items of clothing such as Jackie O's jeans, it doesn't show a picture of what is being referred to. But in all, love it, and it is taking pride of place on my bookcase.

I found this book really helpful, My wardrobe was full of clothes that didnt do anything for me, I never knew what to put on in the morning, I got confused between style and fashion and just put on my safe clothes instead.
With different levels of skills it means it can be used for both adults and children and makes a great present for those cold wintery days when you want to stay in and be creative.
i love it damn good, 15 Jan 2006
i dont normally read books but i got this for christmas and i couldnt put it down, now i plan to get a shed for my birthday and live in it get it get it now A definite recommendation, 09 Oct 2008
Very Cartoony, 29 Apr 2005
Beautiful!, 26 Oct 2008

Very old fashioned styles of clothes and not enough home accessories, 14 Apr 2008
I was looking for a good all round sewing reference book with ideas of things to make for the home. This book has only a handful of home accessories - none of which i would want to make. The majority of the book is clothing which i found to be very dated styles. It does cover all the different sewing techniques though which is the only good thing.
Only if you need outdated outerwear, 25 Dec 2007
I would not recommend this book to anyone who wanted to sew modern up to date clothing. It seems to think that nobody wears underwear so simply excludes it entirely.
Dry in tone and presentation and completely lacking in inspiration and flair.
If you want to know the nuts and bolts of sewing outerwear, this is great, anything else, look elsewhere.
An excellent reference book, 18 May 2007
Contrary to what other reviewers have said, I wouldn't recommend this book for total beginners - it assumes that you already know the basics of setting up and using a sewing machine, cutting out a pattern, pinning things together, etc. These things may sound obvious, but they certainly weren't to me at first! If you really are starting from scratch and would like a book that'll hold your hand with that sort of thing, this isn't the one for you yet. However, if you're already OK with the absolute basics (or aren't afraid to ask the internet!) and are looking to make the move from practising with cushion covers to making clothes, then this book is a must-have.
Although I can't imagine ever sitting down and reading the whole thing, I've found it absolutely invaluable for looking up particular techniques or bits of jargon when I'm dealing with less-than-clear patterns. The instructions and diagrams are clear and useful, and I particularly appreciate the alternative techniques that i | | |
